Comments: A Milanese border with double-headed eagle pattern. In the 18th century this iconography was most commonly associated with the Holy Roman Empire and Russia, and after 1806 with Austria and the German Confederation established in 1815. Such figural patterns in Milanese were not uncommon, and using the tape lace methodologies creates lots of possibilities. There are offshoots of this kind of lace in Eastern Europe, but I think that the plaited ground here points to and 18thc Italian origin. The tape is very plain, and the symmetry of the design almost points to Abruzzi techniques. I’d like to see closeups of the lower border, the design looks a bit cut off, but it’s probably OK. Seller says one end is slightly worn, but overall very good condition for the age.

Comments: A very ‘Venetian’ looking Irish Crochet dress insert. Irish Crochet does take inspiration from the Italian raised needlelaces, and you can see echos of that here. I do think t his has been cut from a larger piece and fitted into material as an insert – the pattern is just too random for an original piece. The picots might be Clones knots (a bit hard to tell), and the raised and flat worked crochet is finely done. Seller cites one or two broken brides, otherwise in good condition.

A kind of 2-d rendering of a highly 3-d piece. It has a Duchesse feel, but with the sophistication of Ghent. I can’t see any condition problems from the photos – overall very good.

Comments: A Point de Gaze handkerchief with a small monogram. I’m intregued by the roses – there is some decoration of the raised petals, and an interesting kind of shaded effect. Hard to explain. Not much in the way of decorative fillings. It does have a lot of small holes in the mesh, very difficult to repair, even if you could find the thread. I’d rate the condition slightly short of good, but it is a little unusual Presentation for Point de Gaze.

Comments: From a stately home sale in Scotland. Gros Point re-worked into a collar, although you can follow the flow of some of the pattern The question is, how early is the lace? It is very sculptural with large areas of clothwork, either plain or ornamented with lines. I am a bit bothered by the needlelace filling stitches – they seem a little coarse for an early piece. But the ornamentation of the brides and cordonnet looks good. There’s a lively debate, even a recent conference discussing the age of such pieces. Similar items have been argued as 19th c pieces, but there is very little documentation existent. I join the call of those who are calling for reliable dating tests to try and shed light on the dates of early pieces.
Arguing for a 17th c date would be the fact why would anyone rework a more modern piece into this shape? Why not just make it that way in the first place?  I think it might be an earlier piece.
Condition looks clean and sound.

Comments: An impressive Carrickmacross guipure triangular shawl. Large pieces of this lace are unusual, but not entirely unknown, write to me for some web sites.  Note the spiky picots, which you see in Carrickmacross sometimes rather than the looped ones. I’m thinking that some of the motifs are thistles with their spiked leaves.  I don’t see any muslin embroidery or raised work which you sometimes see in Carrickmacross.  But this exuberant design really doesn’t need anything more.  Very good condition, really exceptional.

Comments: Except for fans, smaller shaped pieces of Chantilly are relatively rare – normally you find flounces, veils, scarves and shawls. When fallcaps do come up they tend to vary a lot in form. This one has exaggerated ovals for the cap and lappet ends, with a well organized design. One lappet has two holes, and there seems to be a broken mesh in the main cap ground upper left. Basically good condition overall. Hard to say if it is French or Belgian; both did this kind of shaped work.

Comments: A handkerchief with bobbinlace motifs appliqued on. I’m thinking this might be Honiton due to the larger size of the motifs and the large areas of fillings. But Brussels is a possibility.  The design is also less coherent that you normally find in Brussels; although the ’10-stick’ loops are more Belgian. Bit of a puzzle. And the ‘Bessie’ monogram stamp is an English name. Overall very good condition, especially the net, although there is some discoloration in the center cloth.

Comments: A lappet set of probably Flemish bobbinlace with droschel ground. English is sometimes a possibility in pieces like this, and you have to look carefully at the design and how the ground is put in. The droschel here is very straight, and although the design is a bit plain, the fillings are great. Mid 18th century, although the picot edge might be a 19th century addition – it looks a bit too crisp.  The set does have a lot of rust spotting, but more to the point, two sections appear to have been replaced. The work on these modifications is so good that it seems to be a very early operation in the history of the set.

Nice Maltese cross all around the border. The piece looks in very good condition, with good, crisp motifs.

Comments: A triangular dress insert and two cuffs of Brussels Duchesse. It’s hard to say if the cuffs and insert go together – both have a lot of Duchesse motifs that are common to many such pieces, and the Point de Gaze inserts do share the circular pattern of fillings. But I think the insert is a bit more sophisticated in design, with the multi-layered rose petals, and the hanging vine tendril motif. These aren’t present in the cuffs.And the insert has much more raised bobbin work than the cuffs.  Plus, the condition of the cuffs is less good than the insert, with some discoloration and holes in the Point de Gaze mesh. The insert looks very good as far as condition goes.

Comments: A child’s bobbinlace set from the ‘la Boule de Neige’ people. Similar, but not exactly the same as the Cottier sets that sometimes come up on Ebay. Note the bobbins – the heads come off and you can replace the cone of thread.  I have one of these, beware, if you live in a dry climate the bobbin will warp substantially.  The set contains the second edition of La Boule de Neige – undated. Mostly Torchon patterns. The first edition came out in 1905 and the third in 1918. There is a photo of the set in the booklet and it says it has 26 bobbins, unsure if all of them are in the set here. The cover of the box also says something about embroidery, so I’m not entirely sure how the bobbinlace and embroidery fit together.

The racroc strips in this triangular shawl seem to run parallel to the long edge which is unusual. Seller says there is one small repair, and I don’t see any obvious problems in the photos. Overall very good condition.  3rd quarter of the 19th c, this form was meant to drape over the back of a large crinoline skirt.

Comments: The lace on these pieces look early Milanese (17c-18th c), and they make a nice contrast to each other. The first is more elaborate, with motifs almost breaking off into seperate elements, with good fillings and 6 pointed star ground. The second has plainer tapes, no fillings and a tighter ground. Not sure if the lace goes all the way around the cloth on either. Both have a few holes and general wear, but overall good condition for the age.

Comments: Mid 18th c lappets with a droschel ground. I’ve got a feeling the description in the post is wrong, so I’ve written the seller about it. These are quite high quality. What you look for in something like this are a good variety of bobbin-made fillings, and small well-defined motifs in an undulating, naturalistic pattern. I especially like the quatrefoil and snowflake variation fillings here. Most pieces surviving from this time have a few pulls in the ground, same here, nothing serious. I’ve got a feeling that the outside picot edge is a later addition – this was often done in the 19th century to ‘liven up’ an earlier lace.  An impressive set.

Comments: Alençon lappets around 1780.  The ground is probably brides tortillée. These lappets are joined with another band which as the seller points out, was probably part of a headdress. Often when you see this type of thing the joining band is a little smaller than the main piece so that a cap back can fit in rather naturally, with the joining band ruffled around the edge. Here the joining band is just slightly small, but it does seem to have the same pattern as the lappets. Which means this is a very unusual matched set.  There are scattered small holes in the mesh, but nothing else I can spot from the photos. Overall good condition.

Maybe 3rd quarter 19th c, where such ‘Crinoline’ flounces were used to decorate large hoop skirts.  Good, naturalistic design, note the esprits in the upper ground, and the elaborate needlelace medallion on each repeat.  It does have a rather elaborate engrelure. Seller notes some small holes and tears primarily in the first yard of the longer piece. Overall very good condition – the state of the machine net is extremely important in a lace like this.

Comments: An Alençon border in two pieces. Réseau fin along the edge, and brides tortillée in the upper part – a typical late 18th c Herren Alençon. (so called because it was often used for gentlemen’s ruffled cuffs). One curious thing, note the little sprigs used as esprits in the upper ground, but along the very top there are only simple circles. I guess it’s part of the design, because the lace looks intact.  The lace looks in very good condition – I had trouble spotting even tiny holes, which is great for a piece like this. Seller cites on estain – a very minor consideration. Just wish it hadn’t been cut in half.

Comments: Like most Gros Point that survives today, this one is a reassemblage of motifs from several original pieces. Not only is the design flow basically nonexistent, but there are no brides. I’m firmly convinced that there’s nothing you can’t learn about needlelace by studying Gros Point – they invented so much. This is a great piece for that kind of study, and it is a good, long length. I especially like the parts of t his where the raised edges undulate around a center motif. The condition looks good – at least I don’t see any obvious fraying. Maybe a few stains.

Comments: Two Mechlin lappets with very heavy gimp. Heather Toomer shows a piece with a similar gimp treatment in plate 216 of “Antique Lace: Identifying Types and Techniques”. She says it was introduced into Mechlin in the 1760’s and 1770’s in imitation of the cordonnet of French needlelaces like Alençon. You see it occasionally, not often. I think that dating agrees with the design of these pieces.
There seem to be a seam 7″ down on both pieces, but it doesn’t much affect the design. It’s a bit of a mystery. A little damage to some fillings, and also some staining, but basically good condition.

Comments: A Chantilly flounce, fairly wide, of good romantic high-end market design.  No esprits in the upper ground. Some photos show holes in the upper ground, I spoke to the seller about this piece regarding condition – there are 3 areas with several holes, some pinholes, others about 1-2cm. Always in the upper 8 cm, probably from having been sewn to a garment. I leaned something new, the strips sewn together by Racroc are called ‘melle’ in French. So the holes are confined to the top melle.
In assigning Chantilly to France or Belgium, collectors sometimes refer to the color of the thread. Finer thread thread associated with France seems to have a dark grey appearance, and seller thinks this is the case here. Belgian is a much darker black reflecting the use of heavier threads.

Comments: An important piece, even if it is cut. If it’s a copy it’s a very good one – I am tending to think it is an original late 17th c piece. It’s not quite as fully developed as some Point de Neige, and the lower edge isn’t as elaborate as it should be. I’m comparing it in detail to a known example in my collection, and much of the structure looks very similar. The jury is a little bit out on this one, and it definitely needs some further investigation under a microscope, with thread tests, including thread diameters. Surprisingly much of the early Point de Neige seems to have been made of cotton. Dating would be essential if possible.  It is in very good condition, although I spot what looks like a few repairs here and there.

It has a Burano feel to some of the stitches.  I don’t know what the PC means on the attached metal tag, but it is probably the manufacturer. The design is a rather curious combination of a Gros Point copy on the outer edge, and a flat point section inside.  The condition looks very good, I don’t see any problems from the photos.
12/12/12 Something just occurred to me. I wonder if the PC might mean Point Colbert, and that this would be a French piece. Just speculation.

Comments: A set of Alençon lappets which are a bit, well, strange.  The designs don’t match in the mirror image sense that you expect. I can’t tell how the mesh was made (réseau fin?), there aren’t any closeup views, but it does seem to change a bit in character in different sections, especially in the righthand one. And there’s signs of repair. I’m wondering if this isn’t a set made up from something else, or altered from an original. The work is quite beautiful, but all-in-all it’s rather a puzzle.

Although some might argue an English origin, we don’t have good guidelines to tell the difference at this period.  Some of the motifs in the ground might be insects. The picots around the edge are very sharp, I’m wondering if this was added later, not an uncommon 19th c adaptation, and not particularly important for a piece of this quality. Condition is very good with the mesh basically intact except for some minor pulls. One small hole at the end of the right hand lappet.  This isn’t the greatest design for lappets of this period, but the condition and quality of work are very good.

Comments: A Duchesse de Bruges shawl collar and two cuffs – they look in original condition. The term ‘Duchesse de Bruges’ is a general term for a Duchesse without any Point de Gaze inserts. Something going more toward Bruges Bloemwork has a different design aesthetic and technique. It’s actually a range, and this has some Bloemwerk characteristics, such as in how the brides are handled.  This example is well done with tightly woven motifs. There is some staining especially around the neck area, and a few spots, but no damage that I can see. Basically good condition.

Comments: A Brussels Duchesse bertha collar (“Brussels Duchesse” means a Duchesse bobbinlace with Point de Gaze inserts). Raised rose petals in the Point de Gaze, while the bobbinlace has a bit of a flatter more Bruges style work. But it all comes together very well. Condition is very good, seller notes only 3 tiny orange dots, and I can’t see any sign of damage. Nice piece.

Comments: These five lengths of Brussels application on Machine net appear to match in the design – so I’m not sure why the different widths. Might be a condition thing. They are middle market pieces, lots of points for the long lengths on two of them. A bit worn, especially the shorter ones, with a few small holes and marks – need evaluation on condition piece by piece. The longer ones look quite good.

Comments: A large rectangular veil of embroidered net, perhaps Limerick. I don’t know enough about the different styles to assign it to a specific country. The work is nicely crisp and well filled in. It has a simple border of flowers with sprigs throughout the ground. Looks in very good condition, seller cites a few tiny repairs which indicates that this was a valued piece. Machine net is not easy to repair.

Comments: A large triangular Chantilly shawl. The form is meant to drape over a large crinoline skirt. We see so many machine-made ones on Ebay that it’s a real pleasure to see a handmade one in original condition. I do wish there were some detailed closeups so one could see the stitches, and also where the Racroc lines are. A shawl like this could take a year to make and involve the work of 10-12 women. There is a line down the center back that’s bothering me a little, I wonder if it isn’t a seam on the manikin? It does look in very good condition, seller cites one racroc slit, and I can’t find anything obvious wrong.

Comments: A tablecloth that has incorporated a large number of ñanduti round and oval pieces, as well as a border all around the piece. I’ve never seen anything quite like it. The lace appears very well done with well thought out roundels and filling grids. Seller says it was purchased in Paraguay in 1965, and looks like it has never been used. Exceptional condition.

Comments: A single lappet of Brussels bobbinlace with brides, and for me it doesn’t get any better. All I want to know is where the other one is.  The lappet is complete and in outstanding condition, don’t worry about any little marks, they are trivial. This piece is so dense and so beautifully worked that it almost redefines the definition of lace. 1720 to 1730.
