Lace for Sale: Maria Niforos in the Showplace Antique and Design Center, NYC

Maria Niforos has yet a new venture, one that will keep her in New York close to the grandchildren. She is opening a costume, lace and textile shop in the Showplace Antique and Design Center in New York City:

The formal opening of the shop is November 4th, and it has already been filmed as part of a piece on the Showplace Center for the program “A Taste of New York”. You can see the video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mBZSbLl8f34. The Showplace Center is open seven days a week, and Maria will usually be there on weekends or by appointment. Showplace hours are 8:30-5:30 weekends, and 10:00-6:00 Monday through Friday.

Maria sent a few photos – note the wonderful cabinet full of lace. She is currently in London gathering up her stock for the new shop.

Administrative: Hurricane Sandy

Hurricane Sandy is about to make landfall along the New Jersey coastline in the United States. New York will be strongly affected, in fact most Northeastern coastal areas have been evacuated. Wind gusts over 100 miles per hour are expected tonight and tomorrow. This will be a long-lived storm, probably lasting through Wednesday, with unknown effects from flooding. If you are shipping items to or from the United States which might go through the New York customs office, it is probably better to wait a week until all the backlog clears up.
And for those in the affected areas, please stay safe!  My own flight to Washington DC, which was supposed to arrive at 6PM today, was cancelled yesterday.

Ebay Alerts! Seventeen items – October 28, 2012

http://tinyurl.com/8kqrkfp HONITON LACE/LACEMAKING PILLOW AND COLLECITON ONF ANTIQUE WOODEN BOBBINS VGC
Size: includes 16 Honiton bobbins
Starting Price: 9.99 GBP
Auction ends: Oct 29, 2012 11:03:13 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller belfords, cheadle hulme Cheadle, Cheshire, United Kingdom
Comments: A good almost complete Honiton setup (lacking a needlepin and sundry accessories). The pillow and pattern look modern, but can’t tell from the photos. Bobbins range in age with some aqua fortis decoration. Unusual to find a set this complete, and it all looks in very good condition, very usable.

Sold for 31.05 GBP, 3 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/92tuylh Length Antique Handmade Lace-100″ by 8″
Size: 8″ by 100″
Starting Price: 9.99 GBP
Auction ends: Oct 29, 2012 12:00:02 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller baraud, Newton Abbot, United Kingdom
Comments: Laces with this kind of vermicular looped tape are found in several places – a poorly documented early Flemish, Russian Yelts, and various Eastern European sites. Very difficult to attribute a specific place. What distinguishes this piece are the large abstract flowers and leaves which use the looped tape as a ground. There also seems to be a central symmetry to the repeat (assuming the design repeats regularly).  I’m guessing Russian, but it’s a fairly wild guess. The Eastern European examples usually don’t attempt this kind of complexity, and the early Flemish are on a smaller scale and play more with the tape. Condition is a little short of good, frayed upper and lower edges, with some small holes, and with 3 seams. It’s an unusual piece.

Sold for 74.00 GBP, 6 bidders.

Size: 10″ square
Starting Price: $12.00
Auction ends: Oct 29, 2012 21:46:02 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller mspatter, St. Paul, MN United States
Comments: A Carrickmacross applique handkerchief. I think it’s pretty recent; I’ve seen things like this for sale in stores that sell Irish linens, although not so much recently. Very true to the tradition, but simplified, and the motifs are well done and quite crisp. Very good condition, aside from 2 small brown spots you can see in the second photo.

   Sold for $12.00, 1 bidder.

Starting Price: $0.99
Auction ends: Oct 30, 2012 18:07:58 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller adtjmd, RED VELVET BENCH, United States
Comments: A little triangle of Rosaline Perle, nicely worked and in very good condition. It has all the elements, the fine motifs with raised work and looped edges, a little interior filling stitches, and the perls which look needle made. Along with the original outside edge, which helps us understand how the makers of this lace thought about finishing.

   Sold for $10.50, 4 bidders.

Size: 11″ x 40″
Starting Price: $25.00
Auction ends: Oct 30, 2012 19:00:01 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller textiles2012, Hydes, MD, United States
Comments: Smaller shaped pieces of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net don’t come up too often. The technique lent itself more toward large borders and shawls. The design is not too sophisticated, but makes good use of the space. A few small holes in the headpiece where it was attached to a veil. Overall good condition. Seller indicates it has been washed, when I don’t know, but it looks like a good job.

   Sold for $36.00, 2 bidders.

Auction ends: Oct 30, 2012 20:22:11 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller twist-in-time, Philadelphia / DFW, United States
Comments: Another hard-to-identify item, and a Russian origin is not unreasonable. Note the plaited mesh, and the well done woven leaves, which are a little unusual. This item has been listed several times with no sale, but I think people should take a closer look.  It appears to be in very good condition.

   No bids.

Starting Price: $185.00 Buy-it-Now
Auction ends: Oct 30, 2012 21:27:49 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller gala7, NW, United States
Comments: A Brussels Duchess frontpiece with very well done bobbin and needlelace. I think there are raised petals on the roses in the Point de Gaze inserts – a little hard to tell. The right upper end looks intact, but there may be some cutting to the left upper side. It doesn’t look quite finished.  Other than that it looks in very good condition, maybe a few tiny holes.

   No bids.

Starting Price: 4.95 GBP
Auction ends: Oct 31, 2012 11:04:12 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: Two pieces of Honiton guipure, which look like they have been cut from a narrow scarf or some other kind of headpiece. The work is snails/slugs period, but quite nicely done with tight weaving. And the bridework is unusual, not enough closeups to tell exactly what it is.  Overall good condition, a few loose brides here and there – and there are those cut ends.

Sold for 14.02 GBP, 4 bidders.

Starting Price: 9.99 GBP
Auction ends: Oct 31, 2012 12:00:23 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller baraud, Newton Abbot, United Kingdom
Comments: I find this an exciting piece. It is Flemish, and bears a lot of resemblance to figure 254 in Santina Levey’s “Lace, A History”. That is dated early 18th century, and I think this is a likely date. It has a light, feathery appearance with an overall symmetry typical of late 17th early 18th c works. Even though there is a picoted bride ground, there is extensive use of small flower heads as filling elements. You can also see the beginnings of raised borders around the edges of some elements. I wish there were a closeup photo of the backside to see if threads carry over behind the motifs – that is a sure sign of Flemish work. The condition appears very good – I see the occasional repair in the closeup photos, and seller cites a few loose brides. Nothing major.  One thing you need to be careful about with a piece like this – has it been cut down from something larger along the top edge. Hard to tell here, I suggest writing to the seller for some closeup photos of the top border.

Sold for 191.82 GBP, 10 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/95rknxp Maltese bobbin lace table set antique vintage silk

6 smaller doilies 4.5″ diameter.
Starting Price: 9.99 GBP
Auction ends: Oct 31, 2012 12:00:23 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller baraud, Newton Abbot, United Kingdom
Comments: It’s unclear if the doilies, which are of a simpler pattern, actually go with the large Maltese square piece.  37″ square is a good size for a table cover, not something meant to be folded as a shawl. The large piece has a beautiful bold pattern, with the central star well scaled for the rest of the piece. There is some guipure in the center, but it mostly relies on patterns of woven leaves. I don’t see any serious condition issues in the photos, overall they look very good.

Sold for 67.05 GBP, 4 bidders.

Size: not given
Starting Price: 4.95 GBP
Auction ends: Oct 31, 2012 12:24:17 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A Honiton collar with a matching cuff, which might be “Point” Honiton, with a needle-made mesh. No closeups to definitely tell.  These are higher end market pieces, well beyond the snails/slugs stage.  A few unfortunate holes so it’s a bit hard to rate the condition as good.

Sold for 22.99 GBP, 5 bidders.

Starting Price: $2.99
Auction ends: Oct 31, 2012 15:18:49 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller echo.obrien, Rye, United States
Comments: A large ñanduti doily of complex design. It has 3 concentric layers of roundels surrounding a large grid area, with gridwork between all the roundels. There seem to be two different ‘sol’ patterns in each of the three layers. The palm leaf outer edge is unfortunately a bit ragged in places, but the rest is in very good condition. Seller indicates that it has been washed.  This is ñanduti at its finest.

   Sold for $30.00, 3 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/9qgpe6d Vintage Elegant Brussels Duchesse Bobbin Lace Lappet VERY NICE!
Size: 41.5″ long, 1-5/8″ at neck, 3.5″ ends
Starting Price: $9.99
Auction ends: Nov 01, 2012 17:30:02 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller kouleegirl, Chagrin Falls, OH, United States
Comments: This is a continuous bobbinlace, therefore can’t be Duchesse. It is something much rarer. The clothwork is all halfstitch, so I’m suggesting white Chantilly, likely a French product. There’s even some honeycomb stitch in the centers of the roses. Hard to tell from the photos if the thread is silk. Some people might suggest  Bucks, but I think there’s just too much halfstitch – although the thread might be just a little heavy. There is unfortunate damage to one spot near the center back, but this kind of lace is so rare that I think it could be overlooked. The rest seems in very good condition.

   Sold for $97.00, 4 bidders.

Offered by: Ebay seller adtjmd, RED VELVET BENCH, United States
Comments: In my last Alerts post I said I was going to pay more attention to embroidered nets, so here goes. This is a tambour piece where the chain stitch is used to applique another piece of tulle onto the machine net. The extra in the second layer is cut away, and a few needlerun filling stitches added to the base net. The pattern is complex and naturalistic. The base net suffers from a few medium sized holes, but that’s something you see in most all tulle-based pieces – and it is very hard to fix.  Several bidders have already taken note of this piece.

   Sold for $81.00, 6 bidders.

Starting Price: 69.99 GBP
Auction ends: Nov 02, 2012 08:42:39 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller discover4, London, United Kingdom
Comments: I’m not skilled enough to identify all the needlerun embroideries on machine net – yet.  Here the pattern is reminiscent of the Blonde de Caen veils, with one heavy border of separate flower sprays.  The net drapes beautifully, and seems well intact. Seller sites trivial tiny pulls and a few faint age marks, so overall very good condition.

Sold for 69.99 GBP, 1 bidder.

Size: 22″ x 17.5″
Starting Price: 19.99 GBP
Auction ends: Nov 02, 2012 08:42:39 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller spikelawless, sapcote, United Kingdom
Comments: This is a very typical Belgian square pillow with wedge shaped base, meant for making long lengths.  The overhang at the top would be supported by a separate adjustable stand. They were occasionally used in France, especially along border towns with Belgium, like Bailleul. The three drawers are typical, but this one does not have the extension piece that could fit either at the top or the bottom.  Never mind the ragged blue cloth – the pillow is intact with the original canvas cover. The lacemaker would have chosen a colored cloth to back her work.  The wood looks a bit dry, but overall it seems in very good condition, and quite usable. They are usually stuffed with wool, and making them was quite a cottage industry in Belgium.

Sold for 41.00 GBP, 3 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/9t8ojg4 MAGNIFICENT POINT DE GAZE LACE COLLAR

Starting Price: $99.00
Auction ends: Nov 02, 2012 15:56:52 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller madhouserags, Concord, NH 03301, United States
Comments: Definitely one of the better Point de Gaze berthas to come along in quite a while. Note the multiple layered rose petals and good ornamental fillings. The shaped neckline border is also unusual, a little extra touch. The condition is very good – I don’t see any problems from the photos. Which in itself might indicate an origin more in the late 19th century, early 20th. The overall design seems just a little mechanical, but I’m nitpicking.

Comments: A Brussels Duchesse fan with Mother-of-Pearl sticks and guards. Well done bobbinlace with some raised work. The Point de Gaze inserts have some raised rose petals. The design is rather asymmetric, a bit rococo.  Seller does not make any condition comments and there are few photos. Overall it looks good, perhaps a little staining?

Comments: This medallion was issued on December 17, 2011 to celebrate the addition of Point d’Alençon to the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. 5,000 were issued by the Monnaie de Paris, which produces French coinage, medals and similar items. It was created in 864. (that’s 864, not 1864.) Originally available from the Alençon Chamber of Commerce for 2 euros, they can now occasionally be found on various auction sites. This is a commemorative medallion, not currency.

Offered by: Ebay seller purplesybil28, basingstoke, Hampshire, United Kingdom
Comments: A silk Maltese mantilla with lappet ends. Only one photo, but the condition looks good. It seems to have been made from several parallel strips of round motifs laid parallel to one another, with a Maltese cross in the center. Not much variation in the design; in fact this arrangement is a bit unusual.

Sold for 40.99 GBP, 4 bidders.

Offered by: Ebay seller soniasantiqueandvintagetextiles, Seabrook, NH, United StatesUnited
Comments: A Maltese dress insert. I’ll assume it is intact – there is some kind of backing and the ends have hooks and eyes attached. Those could be removed. Note the six-pointed star ground, this is often used as a background for extensive guipure work. There is some in the middle of this piece, and it also looks like it was joined down the center. A separate sun alternating with a Maltese cross is added as an outer border. Condition looks good, although it’s a bit hard to tell with the backing.

   No bids.

Offered by: Ebay seller sugarbaby2011, The North Pole, Canada
Comments: A Point de Gaze border, unfortunate that there is so little. It is a higher end flat piece, with some notable filling work formed of diagonal bands. Seller indicates that there might be a religious significance, but I’m not picking up on it. This kind of technique doesn’t show up too much in Point de Gaze, but it is definitely Belgian in the handling of the fillings and the spaced buttonholing over the raised outlines.  I see a few repairs, well done, to the mesh in the closeup photos (which are a little out of focus). Overall good condition.

   Sold for $82.99, 2 bidders.

Auction ends: Oct 27, 2012 12:42:25 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller sugarbaby2011, The North Pole, Canada
Comments: A Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net, very finely done, later 19th c. The motifs are small, naturalistic and delicately worked. A few simple needlelace fillings occupy some small spaces, but these are secondary to the nice bobbin work. Not sure what the corner motifs represent – might be wheat. Cattails are an interesting notion, but I don’t think these would be well known to Belgian designers. A few pinholes in the net, not bad, and some small stain areas. It has a bit of a wrinkled appearance that comes from perhaps having been washed in the past. Basically good condition. An impressive piece viewed all at once.

Size: 6″ x 37″
Starting Price: 14.95 GBP
Auction ends: Oct 28, 2012 10:18:37 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: An Irish crochet border with densely worked motifs, lots of raised work. The brides have some very elaborate picots – I can’t see just how they were made. Maybe little trefoils? But they remind me of some of the more fantastic bride ornamentation in Gros Point. Wish there were more of this. Seller gives no condition notes, but it looks very good to me.

Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A Point de Gaze border, no raised work. A few heavily padded ring fillings and some chains of knots, nothing fancy. Overall this relies on the design of the well done clothwork for impact. There are a few ‘snowflake’ motifs in the upper ground, and ring esprits. It’s a good piece that does a lot with simple techniques.  Seller cites numerous repairs and small holes, although some parts look quite good.

Offered by: Ebay seller nantes-antiques, Nantes, France
Comments: I think it’s a tambour embroidery on machine tulle, with lots of needlerun filling, nicely done. I think those are carnations. There are lots of not very well done repairs in the upper mesh which doesn’t add much to the original design. But at least someone thought highly enough of this piece to put in the repair work.

Comments: An interestingly shaped Irish Crochet collar. Note the trefoils of Clones knots at the bride intersections.  Well done motifs with attached raised work. Seller cites collar discoloration, and I wonder if it doesn’t look a little dry – might just be the photography. But overall very good condition.

Auction ends: Oct 28, 2012 11:52:29 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller linen-cupboard, Crawcrook, Tyne and Wear, United Kingdom
Comments: A Maltese border for some kind of table linen. It looks composed of 4 concentric strips, not of which match each other all that well. I do like the ‘snowflake’ ground used in the inner two layers – that doesn’t come around too often. A few separations, and some fraying on the inner and outer borders.

Sold for 46.51 GBP, 10 bidders.

Offered by: Ebay seller adtjmd, RED VELVET BENCH, United States
Comments: A shawl collar of bobbinlace application on machine net. It might be Honiton. But the fillings are needlelace stitches, which is not typical, and there’s a bit too much refinement in the motifs (size and the raised edges). And the net isn’t that supple white tulle that Honiton workers normally use. I think it’s a Belgian piece. A bit aged in color and a few tiny holes in the net, but overall good condition.

   Sold for $54.35, 4 bidders.

Comments: A Point d’Angleterre handkerchief, with a few inserts of pure unraised Point de Gaze, no fancy fillings. I almost wish they had left those out, since the rest of the handkerchief stands very well with the fine bobbinlace and point de gaze mesh.  Beautiful joining work to the center cloth.  A few tiny holes in the mesh, not major, overall good condition.

   No bids.

Offered by: Maris Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: A large ~square veil of Brussels application on machine net with a New York provenance. Bobbinlace motifs with fillings which are basically grids of needle-made knots and the occasional ring. Seller discusses a wedding ring motif, and I agree with that. Wish there were a photo of the whole thing laid out flat.  The design seems deep around the border, then just esprits of probably needle-made rings in the rest of the ground. Overall very good condition, I don’t see any problems from the photos. Not even pinholes, although there must be some in a piece this large.

Comments: A Dresden-type pulled thread embroidery, looks like a sleeve ruffle but it has some funny patterns making it hard to tell. Works like these were made starting around the mid 18th century as a cheaper alternative to bobbin and needlelace. This is a beautiful example – note the herringbone stitch which gives the solid motifs some relief.  Hard to hazard a guess on the date of this, but it looks like an earlier work. Heather Toomer has some excellent recent books on the subject. I see a few loose stitches on the back that don’t show on the front, overall very good condition.

Comments: A combination Honiton Guipure and Honiton Point handkerchief. Which makes it pretty confused. There’s a needlelace ground in the section next to the cloth, which also includes some butterflies. But the overall design and technique seems a bit haphazard and very snails/slugs. Condition, however, looks good – I think I see a little staining, but no particular damage. Seller doesn’t comment on condition.

Offered by: Ebay seller vickysilk, somerset, United Kingdom
Comments: I’ve seen this form before, but this one has some technical shortcuts. Normally you would call it a Brussels Duchesse, which is a pieced bobbinlace with Point de Gaze inserts.  The bobbinlace here is a little on the simpler Bruges side, and the ‘Point de Gaze’ has needlemade motifs with raised rose petals, but appliqued onto a machine tulle ground. Whether this is original or the result of a repair, I don’t know. It’s an interesting form, and the design is well adapted, but it’s a little middle market for my taste.

Sold for 177.00 GBP, 8 bidders.

Comments: I think it was originally a large shawl collar, and I’m wondering if the pieces couldn’t be put back together. They almost look like the cut parts match – maybe. You could call it Duchesse de Bruges, basically meaning no raised work and no needlelace, but quite high quality. The lace itself is in very good shape, aside from the dismemberment.

Comments: I think it was a large bonnet veil – note the ribbon strung through the top to gather around the back of a hat.  I don’t do nearly enough reviews of embroidered net, and am going to try and correct that in the future.  And I’ll study my Earnshaw “Embroidered Machine Nets” to try and get better at identification. This particular piece is a needlerun net recalling similar work in Brussels Application, or even some of the larger Arras pieces.  I don’t see any holes, but there are a few dark brown spots, and the seller says it is a dark cream color. Would probably wash up (properly done) very nicely.

Comments: A Brussels bobbinlace application on machine tulle. Good condition, seller cites some well done repairs and several orange dots – minor. It’s quite a delicate piece with a good design, and survivors in this kind of condition are rare. I like how the edge is so nicely sculpted. A few well placed needle-made fillings in the end flowers.

Comments: A delicate bobbinlace application on machine net similar to the previous one. Technically I think it’s the better piece, but the size is more a small hat veil. The design elements are quite small and nicely worked, especially the small buds used as esprits. Seller notes a few pinholes and orange rings, overall good condition.

Comments: I’m really glad that this seller is using a white background to help point out where the stains are – that demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of white lace. This is a simple Point de Gaze handkerchief; no raised work, but a few nice fillings, and the lace itself is virtually undamaged. Just those few minor stains.

Comments: A long, reasonably wide collectible length of Brussels Bobbinlace application on machine net. The motifs are well worked with a few tiny needle-made fillings. No esprits in the ground, and the curvilinear design makes me think this is a later 19th c piece.  It is beautiful, but not quite as elaborate as some of the earlier pieces. Seller says it was reclaimed from a garment and has occasional small holes and repairs, some fraying on top edge. Overall good condition.

Comments: A wide collar of Brussels Duchesse with 3 Point de Gaze inserts. No raised work in the Point de Gaze, but a nice filling in the flowers. The Duchesse is a little on the Bruges side, no raised work and fairly standard motifs. Very good condition all around, I see a pinhole or two in the needlemade mesh, and a bobbin bride or two that needs re-attaching, but that’s minor.

Comments: A double layer Honiton applique collar with a very nice presence. If the measurements are correct, it’s more of a bertha collar, although I think the open edge goes to the front. The motifs are well beyond snails/slugs, nicely done, with extensive tally fillings. Seller cites a few minor pulls, I don’t see anything obvious from the photos – very good condition.

Comments: An impressive looking shaped shawl. Muslin applique on machine net with areas of needlerun fillings. The central shaped piece is edge with a deep ruffled flounce. Cloth applique work like this was done in many areas and can be difficult to attribute. Carrickmacross has a very distinctive edge (usually), but I don’t think that applies here. Cut cambric applique from Belgium usually has a chain stitch edge – I can’t tell if that applies here. Seller cites a dark cream color – I don’t see any defects from the photos. Very good condition.

Comments: A wide, long flounce of Honiton application on machine net. There are condition issues – lots of holes in the net, with some repairs (obviously not enough). This was a reasonable major piece when new.

Comments: A square tambour (chain stitch) embroidery on machine net. I tried to learn how to do this years ago, it’s not easy.  This has a beautiful dense design of small motifs. Tambour was done in many center; Coggeshall, Luneville, Lierre, Hamilton and in Switzerland – not enough research has been done to tell which in this case. Comments: Possibly Carrickmacross guipure – this kind of work wasn’t done much outside Ireland. But it lacks the typical looped edge. Note the very interesting raised embroidery and needlelace fillings in some flowers at the lower edge and scattered in the main work. A very interesting, impressive piece.  Doesn’t come up that often.  Seller cites some minor pulls and one bad repair, a few age marks. Overall good condition.

Comments: A Honiton guipure collar, typical snails/slugs era patterns. It is a pieced lace, but note how many of the motifs carry over to the next one with a bundle of threads. Seller notes a few imperfections, I see occasional loose bride, nothing serious. Basically very good condition.

Comments: This is pretty amazing.  A huge length of bobbinlace applique – although I would favor a Brussels rather than a Honiton origin. The motifs are smaller with some simple needlemade fillings – in Honiton you would expect a larger design with extensive bobbin fillings. It comes with a shipping container dated 1907 from a London company (company name not given in the listing).  One end of the lace is unfinished, wonder if it is the same at the other end. There are a few minor holes in the net, but I can’t speak for the entire length. Overall it looks in very good condition from the photos.

Comments: A long triangular shawl of what Belgian manufacturers seem to have called “Point de Milan”. Bobbinlace pieced motifs somewhat resembling Bruges Bloemwerk or a coarse Duchesse, united by various needle made meshes. It’s never very high on anyone’s collecting list because there are a lot of really awful pieces out there. But this one is nice. From what I can see the piece is intact with an appropriate pattern well executed. Wish there was a photo showing the whole thing laid out flat so you can see the design better. Seller cites a few minor holes and one rust spot, otherwise it looks in very good condition.

Comments: A flat Point de Gaze border with good filling work. Narrow, but definitely a higher end piece – note the well-done fillings.  The little spiky picots along the border are a sign of a particular manufacturer, we just don’t know who. Seller doesn’t comment on condition – looking closely at the photos I see one small spot, but overall very good condition.

Comments: An Alençon border with the romantic design typical of the Second Empire period. Note the use of the more open rempli clothwork, typical of the period. The decorative modes are varied and beautifully done. A smaller piece has been cut from the main, other than that I can’t find anything wrong from the photos. Very good condition.

Comments: A dense 17th or 18th c Milanese pattern – hard to date something like this. Little decoration of the tape itself, and note the woven leaf fillings resembling Genoese techniques. And there is no ground, which would also argue for an earlier date. I find the design quite sophisticated from a distance, and the technique is fairly involved in the tape turnings. I’d go a little earlier on this piece.  The condition appears very good from the photos I can’t spot any problems. Which in itself might argue for a slightly later date.

Comments: I’ve seen circular mats in Rosaline like this before – note the lack of a center hole so I don’t think it’s a parasol cover. There are 8 division forming a kind of overlapping oval pattern, quite impressive. The perls are needle-made. The work is finely done, and aside from 2 minor stains, it looks in very good condition. Rosaline at its best.

Offered by: Ebay seller eastayton, London, England, United Kingdom
Comments: An exceptionally long mid 18th c Mechlin border – and for a collector it’s one of the better pieces I’ve seen in a long time (design, size, condition all positive). A few tiny pulls or maybe a repair at the top edge in some photos, but that’s trivial. The design is quite light despite the large areas of clothwork. The clothwork itself doesn’t have much relief, and it isn’t quite as crisp as some examples. Might have been a little rushed because of the length.  But that’s nitpicking on my part.

Comments: A souvenir of the 1851 Great Exhibition in London, note the Honiton lace around the pillow. Documents from this event are some of the earliest descriptions of lace that we have in English. And a rare piece like this, with a dead-on provenance in excellent condition is pretty amazing.

Comments: A pieced bobbinlace lappet with droschel ground. It is quite long, and the left end in the photo looks a bit funny, not the usual termination for a lappet. But I can’t spot any addition that would have lengthened a single lappet – I’d also put it ~3rd quarter 18th c. The design is rather plain, no fancy fillings. So I’m wondering if this just might be an English piece, which could explain the nonstandard elements. Condition looks very good, it’s unusual to see something like this so intact without serious pulls in the mesh.

Size: 4.0 cm diameter
Starting Price: $9.00
Auction ends: Oct 21, 2012 06:39:30 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller meerschaert, menen, w vl, Belgium
Comments: The French and Belgians produced some wonderful medallions commemorating various aspects of lacemaking, and this silver piece is one of the hardest to find (which makes it amazing that 3 of them have shown up on various sites in the past month). The design is by Louis Bottée (1852-1941). So you can see that even though the medallion has a date of June 1, 1828, it is actually a much later piece. It was issued by the Calais Chamber of Commerce to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the establishment of machine lace in Calais – and you can see both a piece of lace and a leavers pattern on the reverse.  Actually, the first lace machines showed up in Calais in 1821, so I’m not entirely sure why they chose 1828. I also don’t know the significance of the rooster, but it might be related to cock fighting. The silver is a bit tarnished, but I’d advise against cleaning. Otherwise the impression is quite clean.

Comments: This piece only has two motifs, which could put it in the amateur Teneriffe category. But the central cloth is so nicely shaped, one is tempted to think more Nanduti – although there aren’t any characteristic palm leaves or grids. A little spotting on the cloth, and the edge motifs are a bit wrinkled, but overall good condition.

Comments: I’m very fond of the Mexican drawnworks, and this is a good example. Rather than the flat square usually seen, this does seem to be a case for something.  The drawnwork extends over a large range – difficult to do, and nicely done. Comments: Bruges bloemwerk bertha collar.  Good trefoil and flower pattern, fairly typical elements in bloemwerk. There’s some fraying at the neck tape where it ends, almost like it was cut. The ends themselves don’t match like they normally do in berthas, but that’s due to the asymmetry of the overall pattern. It just sticks to a regular repeat. Overall condition looks very good, just that puzzling thing at the ends. Minor issue.

Large raised leaf roses center and sides, and some good decorative fillings. The lace mesh has some small holes, sticks are in good condition, no breaks.

   Unsold.

Comments: A Maltese white silk mantilla, with a pointed oval center and lappet ends. The major focus is on the central roundel of guipure with wide elements of guipure flowers and leaves. Extensive woven leaf grid ground.  Condition is a bit problematic, not just the usual separation of seams, but some real holes especially in the center portion. Difficult to repair, but not extremely serious.

Comments: A Point de Gaze lappet scarf. This is one of those Point de Gaze pieces with no raised work, but very good technique and design. I love the juxtaposition between of the flowers and leaves on the gauzy ground at the ends with the more solid work around the borders – almost like a Duchesse design. It also doesn’t go overboard on fillings, just a simple ring pattern well used to accent the design. Condition looks very good – seller notes a few (5?) pinholes in the mesh. It also looks quite wrinkled, and some photos show an aged beige color. Altogether quite a successful piece – not the very highest quality, but not bad at all.

Comments: An embroidered net square – the size of a hanky, but I doubt it was intended as such. The design is quite interesting, and feels like it might be a war lace. I’ve tried to identify the coat of arms with no luck – can anyone help here? The embroidery is dense and well done, edges nicely finished. I don’t see any obvious holes in the net although there are some dark spots that are obviously weak. Basically good condition.

Comments: A very cleanly designed Maltese narrow scarf. Note the sunflower alternating with star motifs around the edges and down the center. A simple, effective concept. Seller cites a few pulls, but overall it looks in very good condition from the photos.

Comments: A tightly worked small motif Irish Crochet collar. Lots of narrow loops in the design giving it a rather open look. Hard to see the bride decoration, I don’t think they are Clones knots, but probably tightly crocheted loops.  The motifs are a rather scattered about. Actually the sub-unit of three small motifs arranged in a trefoil is nicely done and rather varied in design.  Overall condition looks very good from the photos – seller cites some minor pulls.

Comments: A Brussels application on machine net using both bobbin and needle motifs. Quite a complex piece for such a narrow width. And note the extensive needlelace rings used as esprits in the ground.  A naturalistic design of bows and flowers, although the needlelace looks much more delicate than the bobbinlace. From a distance is works very well, closeup the contrast is a bit much for me. Seller cites a few minor pulls in the tulle, and I do spot a few holes in the net too. Overall good condition looks good.

Comments: A Brussels Duchesse frontpiece with an elaborate Point de Gaze insert. Can’t tell if the rose petals are raised. I do like the rather elaborate needlelace fillings, unfortunate about the scattered pinholes in the Point de Gaze mesh.  Overall the needlelace and bobbinlace designs are nicely balanced, and all technique is very good. Overall condition appears good from the photos – I’d rate it higher if it weren’t for the pinholes in the net.

Comments: A veil of Brussels needlelace application on machine net. I think it’s a bit large for a hat veil, and there is a deep border on one side, the other three are finished with smaller motifs. Most hat veils would have one edge plain that could be gathered. The needlelace is quite flat and light; a very good compliment to contemporary fine bobbinlace applications. Note, no esprits in the main part of the net. The motifs don’t seem all that crisp – might be a sign of a past washing. A few pinholes in the net, and some loose areas around a few motifs. Overall good condition. This is an unusual piece, needlelace appliques of this quality don’t come up that often.

Comments: Wow. Here’s something you are unlikely to ever see again – a piece of Alençon needlelace in progress. It’s quite a modern piece and looks very accurate (having studied in Alençon, take my word for it). It does look like a green parchment backing, which would be correct. I’m writing to the seller to see if there’s a provenance here.
Fair warning, I’m after this one.

Comments: This involves a lot of looking through books without a lot of success. I know of one other piece, not so symmetric, where the seller labels it early Flemish. But I’m thinking it has more in common with the l’Aquila tape laces of the 18th-19th c, and the decorative border seems more Italian than Flemish. Yet the fine thread and straight border are more Flemish. It’s a mystery.  I see a few spots in the photos, but no obvious damage. Overall very good condition.

Comments: Silk Irish Crochet is relatively rare, and this is as complete a parure as you might want to find. The small, beautifully done motifs with raised work reflect the Italian Gros Point and Rosepoint origins of the lace. Note the little looped picots used on the brides and as edges to the motifs. Overall condition looks very good – I might spot a small stain here and there, but nothing important.

Comments: This seller listed a very similar piece in September (http://tinyurl.com/bnwfdqd). Seller states that both were examined and dated by Pat Perryman at the Honiton museum. Both were also cleaned but not repaired in 2009. This one is Honiton appliqued on machine net. A bit beyond the snails/slugs era, although the border and sprigs are a bit more traditional (which might account for the slightly later date). The condition is very good, I love the fluid draping of the net. Occasional small hole in the net and seller states there are some small repairs, nothing major.

Comments: A later 19th c Point de Angleterre collar, which is basically fine bobbinlace motifs and a Point de Gaze ground. This one is nicely done, some of the raised rings in the smaller flowers almost recall Rosaline. It isn’t quite as over-the-top as you sometimes see (I think this was one of the finest Belgian laces), and it doesn’t have any needlelace decorative fillings. I do like the light areas with the needlemade mesh contrasted with the feathery outer bobbin border.  Condition looks very good, although there are a few tiny holes in the mesh.

Comments: Another Point d’Angleterre piece, although this one departs from the formula a bit by including flat needlelace motifs in the inner corners. Normally the needlelace is confined to the ground and decorative fillings. No fillings here. Overall the design is quite effective, with small, well-done motifs.  A few breaks in the mesh, not serious, and generally very good condition.

Comments: A Bruges Bloemwerk collar with pointed ends, demonstrating just how nice this lace can be. Well thought design and good technique. The  condition looks very good from the photos – I can’t spot any problems. Seller does say it is a cream color while the photos look white, which is probably an effect of the background color.,

Comments: This is a small triangular shawl. It appears to have a machine tulle base with needlelace motifs appliqued on. I wish there were closer photos of the needlelace – they are in many ways consistent with Alençon. Fairly solid clothwork, raised edges, and I think I see horsehair around the edges. No decorative modes, which is unusual. But the whole concept of applique would be atypical for Alençon. Use of machine net in Alençon is not unknown, but it was used as a base for the brides bouclé or tortillée, not for simple application work. But this could be an attempt to compete with contemporary Brussels applique work (see the 10th example down in today’s Alerts for a Belgian needlelace example). Which would date it to the 1830-1840 time period.  There are some holes in the net, but overall good condition.
It could also be a Belgian needlelace application – closer photos would help decide.

Comments: A Brussels Duchesse bertha with five Point de Gaze inserts. Raised petals on the needlelace roses, and a few tiny holes in the mesh in places. The Duchesse bobbinlace is well executed and the condition crisp and basically undamaged. One small gap center front and the seller cites a few minor pulls – overall good condition. A good middle market product.

Comments: Probable Milanese border – I won’t speculate on the date which might not be too early (see comments on the next piece). Note the typical plaited ground. It’s not the most inspiring Milanese piece ever made, but is intact and exceptionally long. Nice design of scrolling leaf tapework. There is unfortunate damage to the ground and top edge, so I’d say the condition is a bit less than good.

Comments: Same seller, a similar ‘Milanese’ piece. This one is narrower and shorter, but in better condition. The pattern in both is very similar, with the narrower one scaled down a bit. This one has an interesting edge which looks like it was made at the same time as the rest of the lace. I almost wonder if something similar wasn’t cut off the other piece. The edge has a more modern look, so I’m guessing these are later products. Condition on this one is good.

Comments: An English windmill bobbin winder. Seller says it might be made of Yew, which is interesting since most examples I’ve seen are oak. The vanes to the windmill are unfortunately missing. It seems to have been nailed together with square headed nails, a good early sign. Comes with three inscribed bone bobbins.  Overall condition looks very good. Warping on these things is sometimes a problem which makes the drawer difficult to pull out. I don’t know what the state on that is here.

Comments: A Point de Gaze handkerchief with the lace in excellent condition although seller notes one small repair which I can’t even find in the photos. Some staining in the center cloth.  This is one of those exceptional flat needlelaces with an interesting architectural design and well placed ring fillings that compliment, not overwhelm the pattern. An impressive looking piece.

Comments: A well-done figural bobbinlace, the challenge is to figure out from where. Most of this type of lace comes from Italy, the Genoa area. But the lace border seems more Bruges to me. Opinions are always welcome.  Beautiful detail work on the central figure.  There is a little staining, but the lace itself is nicely intact.  Very good condition in general.

I’ll need to fire up Google Language to see if I can find the name of the pattern since the book is in Danish. The piece is in excellent condition, I don’t see any problems from the photos. Comments: I’d call this a Bruges piece, particularly from the little ‘islands’ where a lot of the brides meet. And the absence of any needlelace. It is a good, open design, and a nice collectible size. Condition looks very good from the photos, seller cites occasional broken bride.

Comments: A semi-circular Maltese cape, which is a bit unusual form. Typical construction of several different lengths sewn together – wish it had been opened up for the photograph so the pattern would be more evident. Lots of good guipure, a dense woven leaf ground, and note the typical undulating border on the outside. Condition appears very good, seller notes only minor defects. Nice looking piece, and whiter than it appears from some of the photos.

This is a hard post to write. Pat Earnshaw was a great friend, and my records are full of handwritten and typed correspondence between us starting in 1979. She visited my house in Minneapolis in 1981.  I heard from her as late as last year.
I spoke to Kerry Taylor about the auction. The October 16th auction was already full of other items, so only a small amount of Pat’s pieces will be offered this time – just a taste of things to come. There will be much more fine lace in the December 4th auction. Since there is such a large volume of material, more will be offered in 5 to 6 auctions next year, yet to be scheduled. People can write to Kerry at info@kerrytaylorauctions.com to get on a database for future alerts. You can also sign up  at http://www.kerrytaylorauctions.com/register.php.
The current auction has two large Chantilly and one Maltese piece (lots 408-410) and lappet/cap back sets, lots 413-418. Two good Venise pieces, 411 and 412. There are a few other laces, 389-392, not part of Pat’s collection.
The series of auctions of Pat’s collection, which is being sold by her son, promise to be among the most important lace offerings seen in years.

Notes: My apologies, this sale is over (I missed the announcement due to some personal travel), but it’s worth following because eventually the sales prices will be posted. And no doubt many of these pieces will float on over to places like Ebay. Photos 180 to about 201 show many lace pieces all wrapped in plastic bags. I think the lots start at around 116 and go into the 140s.  There are many Alençon pieces that appear to be quite fine. Also some Valenciennes, Venetian Gross or Rose point and Point de Gaze. With others.  It seems to be an excellent collection.
