http://tinyurl.com/9ptaayy DENTELLE ” Alençon XIX ème ” FAITE A LA MAIN. REALISATION A L’AIGUILLE
Size: 10.5 cm x 80 cm
Starting Price: 1.00 EUR
Auction ends: Oct 12, 2012 06:43:04 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller vellapremium, languedoc roussillon , France
Comments: An ~4″ wide border of Alençon with a design typical of the later 19th century.  Probably the brides tortillée above, réseau fin below. There are a few modes of various patterns, some picoted rings. The twisted rempli is typical of this period. One end looks like the original start or end point, can’t see the other end. The condition looks very good from what I can see in the photos.

Sold for 81.00 EUR, 7 bidders.

Starting Price: 4.80 EUR
Auction ends: Oct 13, 2012 08:53:07 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller 123-acer69, vaulx en velin, Rhône-Alpes, France
Comments: See my piece on collecting French Santon lacemakers at http://tinyurl.com/8jjuscy. This one is from the workshop of Maryse Di Landro in Aubagne. It is one of the more realistic pieces, and the Le Puy type pillow is nicely done.  The threads and bobbins seem a bit tangled, but overall good condition.

Sold for 5.30 EUR, 2 bidders.

Starting Price: 5.00 GBP
Auction ends: Oct 13, 2012 11:08:54 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller poppy1109, Rochester, Kent, United Kingdom
Comments: Matching cuffs of geometric Irish Crochet with several different motifs in a regular grid pattern. I like the bold design.. Overall good condition, I see a minor spot or two, but no obvious damage to the lace.

Sold for 7.50 GBP, 3 bidders.

Starting Price: 1.00 EUR
Auction ends: Oct 13, 2012 11:22:07 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller claude580_0, Pazy Nièvre Bourgongne, France
Comments: I’ll give this one the benefit of the doubt and call it handmade. Photos aren’t really close enough to tell, but it has a good feel.  Pretty standard later 19th c border, very regular and close work. Seller doesn’t comment on condition, but looks very good from the given photos.

Sold for 7.57 EUR, 4 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/8lsokxg Honiton Lace Wedding Veil Vinage Circ 1880 #9
Size: 71″ x 72″
Starting Price: $1,920.00 Buy-it-Now
Auction ends: 1 day 21 hours from 10/11/12 4:03 PM MST
Offered by: Ebay seller petticoatlanes2011, Amherst, NH, United States
Comments: I’d say it’s more a square shawl, Honiton applique on machine net. It gets lots of points for excellent condition, and the tulle net looks wonderful with a great drape. The motifs are a bit larger and the tulle a little whiter and heavier than contemporary Brussels work, also note the tally fillings in the motifs.  It is a little more advanced than snails/slugs era, but not too much.

   Unsold.

http://tinyurl.com/969s62p Antique Duchess and point de gaze lace FAN LEAF
Size: not given
Starting Price: 45.00 GBP
Auction ends: Oct 14, 2012 06:35:48 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller oooptafagv, lincolnshire, United Kingdom
Comments: A Brussels Duchesse fan leaf with a nice off-center Point de Gaze insert (no raised rose petals). The Duchesse has a rather wild spray of motifs which I find charming.  A little wrinkled, but it doesn’t look like it’s ever been mounted.  I see a few minor broken spots here and there, nothing major. Overall good condition.

Sold for 70.02 GBP, 3 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/94rdpat STUNNING ANTIQUE LINEN HAND WORKED MALTESE BOBBIN LACE RUNNER TOPPER
Size: says 14″ x 9″ which really doesn’t seem right.
Starting Price: 28.00 GBP
Auction ends: Oct 14, 2012 08:07:23 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller atelier1900, Selkirk, United Kingdom
Comments: A Maltese rectangular piece, might be a shawl.  Three roundels with the Maltese cross in the center, guipure and woven leaf ground, and a simple geometric pattern on the outside.  Nicely made, in good condition, but I don’t find the design all that inspiring. It’s just a little off-normal for Maltese.

Sold for 41.30 GBP, 3 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/8otxpbk antique victorian bobbin lace collar
Size: 21.6″ inside edge, 24.5″ outside edge, 6.7″ largest width
Starting Price: $35.00
Auction ends: Oct 14, 2012 08:07:23 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller atelier1900, Rhône-Alpes, France
Comments: Probably a Bruges bloemwerk collar, although the filling detail is a bit unusual. It could almost go over into the Italian tape lace tradition, but not quite. Double picoted brides form the ground, and overall it has a nice bold look.  Condition seems very good, I don’t see any problems from the photos.

   No bids.

Starting Price: 14.00 GBP
Auction ends: Oct 14, 2012 10:08:57 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: An Irish crochet collar of simple form and very nice workmanship. The motifs have raised elements and are tightly worked. Could be Clones knots on the brides, but the photos aren’t close enough to tell for sure. Beautiful symmetry to the design and overall very good condition. Nice piece.

Sold for 42.99 GBP, 5 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/8d5xrvy Antique Youghal Irish Needle Point Lace Hankie Leaves Wedding BridalHandkerchief

Starting Price: $149.99
Auction ends: Oct 14, 2012 14:16:37 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller abridav216, Beachwood, Ohio, United States
Comments: A Youghal handkerchief, with an effective but uncomplicated design of leaves. Good decorative work on the solid parts, nicely offset by an open mesh shading effect in the leaves. Very few decorative fillings.  Overall condition is good, I see a few minor holes in the leaves up toward the upper right, nothing serious.

   No bids.

Starting Price: 7.99 GBP
Auction ends: Oct 15, 2012 10:25:31 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller harpette54, Wells, Somerset, United Kingdom
Comments: One of those indeterminate guipures, could be Spanish or French or German or elsewhere. It does appear to be linen and has a good flower and leaf design with some raised elements in the leaves.  In very good condition.

Sold for 9.03 GBP, 2 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/8b8abv6 Vtg Antique Rose Point de Gaze Handmade Needle Lace Hand Fan Wedding Bridal
Size: 10″ long, 18″ open
Starting Price: $24.99 with reserve
Auction ends: Oct 15, 2012 10:55:39 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller heartnsoul1, Hollis, New Hampshire, United States
Comments: A Chantilly fan with pierced ebony sticks retailed from Tiffany’s. The condition is excellent – not the lace has been backed by some white material, probably silk which is a good protection. Good figural Chantilly doesn’t come up that often. Note the interesting little circles above the putti, not sure how those were made. Might be an embroidery – unusual.

   Sold for $786.00, 7 bidders.

Size: 9″ square
Starting Price: 10.99 GBP
Auction ends: Oct 08, 2012 08:33:18 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller kimsucadi, Wokingham, Berkshire, United Kingdom
Comments: A Maltese handkerchief,a little small, rather typical pattern. Roundels on the outside, a Maltese cross/woven leave border inside.  Condition looks very good, but there’s only one photo so hard to make a complete assessment. This seller has listed some very nice Maltese in the past.

Sold for 4.99 GBP, 1 bidder.

Starting Price: $29.99
Auction ends: Oct 08, 2012 11:27:14 PDT
Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: Either a very large handkerchief, or a small table linen of some kind. The lace seems to be a better quality Bruges, maybe even a Ghent pieced lace – although the thread looks a bit heavy. the design is a bit crowded and I can’t spot much symmetry, but overall it has a bold appearance. Some tears to the central cloth, but the lace looks good. Seller indicates that it needs a good wash.

   Sold for $29.99, 1 bidder.

Starting Price: 9.99 GBP
Auction ends: Oct 08, 2012 12:16:12 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller harpette54, Wells, Somerset, United Kingdom
Comments:A Bruges Bloemwerk collar with two different workings of picoted brides. Typical rose and leaf design with ‘islands’ where some brides meet – all typical Bloemwerk characteristics. The pieces is rather wrinkled, but I don’t see any obvious damage to the lace.

Sold for 12.50 GBP, 2 bidders.

Starting Price: $9.99
Auction ends: Oct 08, 2012 12:34:32 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller kate_michaels_collections, La Jolla, California, United Staets
Comments: It certainly is possible this is a Kenmare needlelace piece, but unfortunately we don’t have a definitive technical description for identification. I do like the edge, it resembles Irish crochet finishings. It is well made, the lace is in very good condition. I jut wish there were better closeups for the raised edges – a wider spacing on the buttonhole stitch would tend more toward Belgium.

   Sold for $159.50, 6 bidders.

Auction ends: Oct 08, 2012 18:25:37 PDT
Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments:  A monogrammed table linen with a Brussels Duchesse border. The point de gaze roses appear to have raised petals, and the Duchesse bobbinlace has some nice raised work on halfstitch background.  A good design but rather conventional – I think it’s a later peices. A few minor problems in the central cloth, but the lace appears in very good condition.

Comments:  A bonnet veil of Brussels bobbinlace application on machine net. Very light design on a supple tulle. A few pinholes in the net, minor issues.  Seller has posted another bobbin applique bonnet veil, see http://tinyurl.com/8tg7ebw.

Offered by: Ebay seller yoncollection, Toulouse, France
Comments:  A a demi-aune, a measuring stick used by French lacemakers in the Auvergne area to measure their product. An aune or ell was a cloth measure of 120 cm. This was one of the measurement systems introduced by Napoleon I in 1812 to serve as a bridge to between traditional measurements and the metric system.  There were several measures introduced, called the ‘mesures usuelles’, and could be used by small retail businesses. The custom was revoked effectively in 1840. That brings to question whether measures like this date before 1840, I don’t know the answer to that question. Some come up for sale that are actually 50 cm long, which would probably date them to the later use of the metric system, and you see women using them in early 20th century postcards. So this one at ~60 cm, and elaborately carved, could be an earlier example. Or a later copy.

Starting Price: 9.99 GBP
Auction ends: Oct 09, 2012 12:00:47 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller baraud, Newton Abbot, United Kingdom
Comments:  A fragment of a Brabant mid 18th century border. Wish there were more. These could come in quite large sizes, but the designs were a little less refined than those of the major Brussels and Ghent centers. This one is in very good condition, a nice sample.

Sold for 27.00 GBP, 4 bidders.

Offered by: Ebay seller heshlynn, Ravena, NY, United States
Comments:  A Maltese headcover of a mantilla variation form. The center form is constructed of several parallel strips, one of which extends into the lappets. An alternating design of roundels goes around the entire edge. A bold looking piece.  I see a few loose seams, one hole at a top point. Basically good condition.

Auction ends: Oct 10, 2012 08:51:19 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller cruzando_el_puente, Jaen, Andalucia Ceuta y Melilla, Spain
Comments:  A long Brussels bobbinlace application on machine net. 8″ width is a good medium sized width. The design is not very complex, swags with some filling flower sprays, no esprit pattern in the upper net. A good middle market product. The tulle net looks in good condition from the photos, maybe a little rough along the top edge. But overall it looks in good condition, hard to tell completely without more closeups.  See also this sellers listing for #180971232313, another Brussels Application.

Offered by: Ebay seller cruzando_el_puente, Jaen, Andalucia Ceuta y Melilla, Spain
Comments:  An elaborate crinoline flounce, Brussels bobbinlace application on machine net. A beautiful naturalistic design with small, well-made motifs. A definite higher end market piece. The condition looks good, although the one single image has some rough spots in the net. Hard to tell on the rest – it’s quite long and the photos and description are not too detailed.

Offered by: Ebay seller fairietree, Hampshire Village Life, United Kingdom
Comments:  A later 19th century lappet ended scarf of Brussels bobbinlace application on machine net. It has a few needlelace rings used as fillings and esprit in the tulle ground. The design is a bit unusual, fairly naturalistic, but the motifs aren’t quite as crisp as they could be. Note that the net behind the motifs hasn’t been cut away as it would be in a higher quality piece. Condition of the tulle net is everything in a piece like this, and I see a few tiny holes, not very serious.

Comments:  Interesting form to this Irish Crochet dress front. High relief motifs all nicely designed to fit the form. The ground is interesting, with some clusters of double stitch relief. Seller cites a few missing stamens to some flowers, and some minor breaks. The peice has been laundered. Overall good condition.

Comments: At one time this would have been part of a major crinoline flounce, but it is sadly cut down now. With a few small holes here and there and some repairs. Still, what’s left of the design of this Bobbinlace applique on machine net is wonderful.  Only a few needlelace rings used as fillings, but the naturalistic flower design really doesn’t need more.

Comments: This looks like a reticella three-part drawnwork insertion; a main part bordered by two smaller drawnwork patterns. All matching, excellent technique, but I don’t think it’s very old. The border of points looks like plaited bobbinlace.  It is a very nice long length in excellent condition. I’m thinking it’s a 19th c Northern Italian copy. A very nice piece. It’s not quite as elaborate as the early Reticella rosettes, and the drawnwork subsidiary borders are atypical.  But it’s a lovely piece.

Comments: This is strange. It looks like a wide flounce or some other large piece reassembled into a triangular shawl. Not the darts around the neckline.  The design to me wasn’t very successful, lots of symmetry lost.  It does seem to be a Brussels application on machine net, although the motifs are fairly coarse. There seem to be some minor defects, not too well explained.

Comments: A bonnet veil of Brussels bobbinlace application on machine net.  A border of single roses and leaves with a small scallop on three sides, sprigs regularly scattered in the ground. The 4th side appears plain as you would expect from a bonnet veil, however there’s not enough information to determine if it was just cut down from a square veil. I don’t think so, feels original. Comments: Another bonnet veil of Brussels application on machine net, but the motifs on this one are all needlelace. It’s a nice compliment to the first piece reviewed above. These don’t come up for sale that often. The motifs are a bit larger and more elaborate than the first piece.  The technique is quite open and airy, not raised work or fancy fillings. Comments: Interesting bobbinlace patterns – I like the bird. Not sure what kind of lace it is form maybe Lille, or Point de Paris?  No markings for a gimp, but you do see some blue marks probably where the original design was drawn. Bobbinlace patterns come up on Ebay all the time, but these are unusual.

Comments: This is the week for applique! Honiton appliqued on machine net, a wide flounce. Nicely worked motifs, good tally fillings, and a fairly dense design over the tulle, with small dots at the upper part and between motifs. Lots of tally fillings in different patterns over large areas. Wish it had been laid out flat for photos, hard to get a good look at the design and see how it repeats. You can see some obvious holes in the net, other areas look good. Seller says some motifs are coming loose, not unusual for a piece like this.

Offered by: Ebay seller adtjmd, RED VELVET BENCH, United States
Comments: The Point de Gaze in this Brussels Duchesse fan is really nice. Note the pointed raised rose petals with little diamond windows – sign of a better manufacturer. And athe bobbinlace is above average in design.  It’s a big piece, and the MOP isn’t showing so much as to detract from the lace.  Condition appears very good from the photos. Some damage and repairs to the sticks, lace has expected age discoloration.

   Sold for $349.99, 1 bidder.

Comments: This certainly could be a Bucks border with kat stitch above, point ground along the edge. But this combination was made elsewhere, so you have to be a little careful.  It’s a light floral pattern, meant to be ruffled.  Wish there were more, and it does have rather a lot of holes.

   Sold for $17.00, 4 bidders.

Comments: The form is a bit unusual, but the work is good.; Brussels Duchesse border for a round table linen of some kind. It is actually all bobbinlace, but some of the inserts have a point de gaze ground. Good raised work in the scrolls against a halfstitch ground, and I like the way the little flowers around the edge are done. Looks in very good condition, just a little fraying here and there. Seller notes mild age discoloration, other very minor defects.

Comments: This Brussels Duchesse handkerchief is in good condition, one hole which could be mended, and a little staining. It’s a nice simple design, and the point de gaze inserts have no raised work. A good middle market product.

Comments: This has kind of a Brabant look to it, but it doesn’t really add up. Something about the grounds aren’t quite right, and the motifs are a little too tape-like. I’m puzzled here.  It does seem like a later Flemish piece. Opinions are most welcome here.  Condition is a bit rough, some breaks in the ground, but not bad.

Comments: An interesting Irish Crochet collar with very heavy border motifs, and a lighter Rose of Sharon inner design. Trefoil picots on the brides for the large motifs, but I don’t think they are Clones knots. It looks as though it was made all in one piece, not reassembled from two designs.  A good bold pattern, quite effective, and in very good condition.

Comments: The ‘Bobbin Lace’ doll by Wendy Lawton – this one is complete with the proper chair. Seller says there is something wrong with the eyes, so price is reduced. It comes up occasionally, there was one a few weeks ago not in this good condition. I have one, it’s a beautifully made doll, and one of the very few American bobbinlace figures.

Starting Price: 80.00 GBP
Auction ends: Sep 28, 2012 06:20:23 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller discover4, London, United Kingdom
Comments: This needlelace bertha has a kind of Zele look. Definitely Belgian, you can tell by the loosely spaced buttonholing on the raised edges, and the extensive use of rings terminating thin stems. Part of the ground is brides, some is the point de gaze mesh and there’s something else that I can’t quite tell what it is. Looks almost like an Alençon twisted type ground. The piece doesn’t rely on fancy fillings, but on solid clothwork with a few decorative windows, and a simple grouping of the ground stitches into a square pattern for filings.  Some condition problems along the neckline and some holes in the mesh. An interesting piece.

Comments: A Bruge bloemwerk collar – a middle market piece, but very nicely done. Good symmetric design with a double bar hexagonal bride ground.  It has a nice visual presence. Condition is very good, I don’t see any problems from the photos.

Comments: A Brussels Duchesse collar. No raised work in the point de gaze inserts, a few small holes in the ground. Typical Duchesse bobbinlace scrolls and simple flowers. The bobbinlace looks in good condition. It does seem quite white, I wonder if there’s been some washing in the past.

Comments: A Brussels Duchesse handkerchief, nice design. The point de gaze roses have no raised petals, but are well drawn. Note the small rings in the point de gaze mesh, a little extra touch. The bobbinlace compliments the piece nicely, not overpowering it like one often sees. Note the elaborate inner border.  Seller cites  a cream collar and some holes in the needlelace mesh, but I think this is minor. Overall good condition.

Comments: A very good combination Honiton guipure (edges) and applique on machine net (center) triangular shawl.  Quite an unusual and innovative design. The lace is basically snails/slugs, but well done with extensive tally fillings. It has that slightly heavier machine net that you often see in Honiton, which looks in excellent condition.  In fact I don’t see any condition problems from the photos.

Comments: I’m confused by the description of this shawl as silk – Shetland knitted shawls were made of the very fine Shetland sheep wool. Silk is a possibility, but it would be unusual, and the closeups aren’t fine enough to tell. It’s a beautiful, delicate piece weighing 2.7 ounces. Seller has no condition notes, and I can’t see anything obviously wrong in the photos.

Comments: A mid 18th c sleeve ruffle of Dresden pulled thread embroidery, beautifully worked with a wide variety of filling designs. Examples like this are quite rare. The piece appears to be intact, and aside from some minor fraying on the top edge, is in very good condition.

   Sold for $160.00, 5 bidders.

Comments: We’ve seen several items from teh Jane Page collection over the years, and here’s another, probably  documented in the book “450 Years of Lace” which was an exhibition at the Allhallows Museum in Devon.   I confess, I’m at a loss here. It has a Punto in Aria look, but much denser, and then there’s those unique borders all over the sold part of the lace. I think it’s better to go on design; symmetric, incorporating large flower heads. Almost like contemporary Dutch ‘Van Dyke’ bobbinlace, but much denser. It is a unique piece. One border is cut, and some general wear, but don’t expect perfect condition from something which may be this old.

Offered by: Ebay seller eastayton, London. England, United Kingdom
Comments: Another fine Dresden-like pulled thread embroidery piece on muslin, mid 18th c. Maybe a little later from the more open design. It reminds me a lot of the bobbinlace pieced laces with droschel ground, even to the bird and insect iconography.  The fillings are not needlelace, but very clever arrangements of the pulled threads into circular grids. This one has a few holes in the mesh, nothing serious. Overall good condition. If you are interested in this kind of work, be sure to get Heather Toomer’s “Embroidered with White: The 18th Century Fashion for Dresden Lace and other Whiteworked Accessories” – the best book out there on the subject.

Comments: A rather architectural looking Point de Gaze narrow border.  Note the spiky picots on the lower border, this is a specific manufacturer, but we don’t know who. Good ring fillings, all nicely worked. No raised work.  A few minor pinholes in the net, overall very good condition, and a good long length.

Breaking News! TSA Branford/Elliott Award given to contemporary lace artist Olivia Valentine

The Textile Society of America has given the 2012 Branford/Elliott Award for Excellence in Fiber Art to contemporary lace artist Olivia Valentine. The award, named for Joanne Segal Brandford and Lillian Elliott, recognizes emerging fiber artists. The 2012 winner was announced at the September 22nd banquet of the TSA Biennial Symposium in Washington D.C.  Nominees for the award are chosen by three anonymous nominators who each invite three artists to apply. The award board reviews applications and selects an artist with an eye toward their willingness to take creative risks.

Olivia Valentine, the 2012 winner, was one of the Powerhouse Love Lace finalists. She is a Chicago based artist whose work has a strong architectural component, looking at threshold spaces in both buildings and textiles. See how she uses architectural drawing materials as bobbinlace patterns. Olivia could not attend the awards banquet since she is now in Turkey studying Oya lace. But LaceNews reached her for a short interview.

LaceNews:  Congratulations on the award! What will this mean for your future career?

Valentine: Receiving the Brandford/Elliott award will provide me with essential additional funding to complete my project in Turkey, currently titled “Nakıs and the Edge”.  I believe that this project will be a cornerstone for me in my work as an artist and my ongoing investigations into the correlations between textiles and architecture.  I am thrilled to have this funding for the project, which will make it possible to complete to the full extent of my vision for the project.

LaceNews: What attracts you to contemporary lace as art?

Valentine: I have spent the last 6 years engaged with different lacemaking techniques as a way to understand connections between architectural and textile constructions and motifs.  I first came to knitting and crochet during my brief interlude as an architecture school student, and started using it actively in my art practice after completing my BFA.  After completing several large scale doilies, where I was using architectural drawing techniques to create support structures for my textile constructions, I came to more traditional lace techniques through my research as a graduate student at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.    The history of the emergence of needle lace from embroidery has inspired a lot of my work.  And the discovery of the relationships between drawing and construction in bobbin lace has been an ongoing interest for me.

LaceNews Your piece ‘Punto in Aria’ at the Powerhouse competition was wonderful, and very architectural. Will you continue with this theme in the future?

Valentine: Creating relationships between different modes of construction is fundamental in my practice as an artist.  My project in Turkey, supported by the Brandford/Elliott Award, will be based in research into the relationship of Anatolian architecture and textiles, particularly in the province of Nevşehir, also know as Cappadocia.  I am drawn to this landscape because of the blurred boundaries between landscape and architecture, and also its nomadic history, where many of these relationships get their beginning.

LaceNews: You are now in Turkey studying Oya lace under a Fulbright scholarship. What attracts you to this particular lace with its very fine, sculptural motifs? Also, recent publications on Oya include not only the knotted needlelace technique, but also variations in crochet and tatting. Will you be studying them all?

Valentine: I will be looking at all three methods of Oya (needle, hook and shuttle), but will likely focus on the techniques that the women around me practice.  I have ample experience with a crochet hook, and will be able to pick this oya technique quickly on my own.  I have not tatted in the past, and my needle skills are less developed.  I am primarily interested in the Oya that village women use to adorn their headscarves, which seem to be primarily “igne oyası”, or needle oya. I am drawn to this edging Oya because of its coloration and adornment with beads and sequins and also its existence as a “flower language” between women in Anatolia.  The edge of a scarf is an important mode of communication, and also a place of transition from interior to exterior.  Through my investigations of Oya, I will be making a series of large scale installations in the landscape, specifically addressing this edging as a space of transition between interior and exterior spaces, and also the blurred boundaries between landscape and architecture that occur in Cappadocia.

Comments: This fallcap is smaller than the Honiton one above, and a good example of a Beds plaited lace in a very salable form. But I am wondering if there’s been some modification – the top of the lappets where they join the cap back park seem to have some damage – almost as if they’ve been cut and joined to something else. And the trails next to the scalloped edges don’t match up.

Comments: Looks like a Milanese piece, late 17th early 18th c? Decoration of the tape is done sparingly, a few single holes, but some of the scrolls are more elaborate and also make use of cloth stitch with twists. The tape is nicely shaped as it goes around curves. The piece is a bit worn, but I’d call it overall good condition for something of this age.

Note the good quality of the net, a little sturdier than what you often find in Brussels application, and with a beautiful drape. There is a large shell-like flower/leaf decoration running on what looks like all 4 sides, with some motifs in the corners, and scattered sprigs in the ground. Snails/slugs era, nicely done. Comments: This is certainly the week for Honiton. Comments: Embroidery on a leno-woven ground note the double strand warp which I don’t think was typical of earlier pieces. Even the points along the edge are done on this cloth   It is a lovely antique-looking design full of symbolism, although the general form is maore an early 20th century table linen. Comments: A square Maltese cover for something – I don’t think it’s a table cover since it doesn’t have a cloth center.  It’s a little small to be a shawl. But it has a great 8-pointed star design, good guipure in the corners, and a very dense leave ground.  An impressive looking piece. Not many photos, but the condition looks very good.

Comments: The post says this is a headcovering that women wore to church. I’m not sure where it’s from – it has an interesting ground typical of Le Puy, but the relief work is unusual. The half stitch is also done quite loosely.  I think it’s pretty big if you scale it in relation to the table it is spread on. Looks like black silk, it’s an interesting piece, and seems in generally good condition. But it’s hard to tell – I do see some loose brides and what looks like wear to the motifs.

Comments: A Duchesse headcovering, one of the various mantilla forms. It has a general Bruges appearance, no raised work, no needlelace anywhere that I can see. A good, dense pattern well executed. Maybe a loose bride here or there, but overall very good condition.

Starting Price: $225.00
Auction ends: Sep 17, 2012 08:41:17 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller sewpatches0, Watsonville, CA, United States
Comments: A very long, wide Valenciennes border, probably Belgian.  The design isn’t quite as sophisticated as one might expect in a piece this size, but still nicely made.  There are only a photos of selected spots, and it’s hard to tell condition for a piece this long., although what is shown looks very good. The seller doesn’t give details that I can understand. In particular, I wonder if there are any joins.

   No bids.

Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: You see mother of pearl sticks like this a lot on fans, but seldom with a lace of t his quality. It is the highest quality of Belgian ‘Point de Gaze’ type, almost over into the more Zele fine Venise types. The clothwork is almost a little too solid for standard Point de Gaze. Very naturalistic flowers, no raised petals, some raised rings for relief, and interesting mode fillings. I see a few pinholes in the mesh of the lace, seller cites a few spots and one brake in a slip of one of the ribs (trying to use proper fan terminology here, see http://tinyurl.com/7ergzp3).

   Sold for $351.00, 5 bidders.

Comments: These metallic laces are typically simple designs as you often see in this kind of lace – it’s a clumsy thread to work with and you don’t need a lot of fancy technique to compete with the glitter. France or Spain, who knows, probably more toward France.  I like the last one the best. Doesn’t come up for sale very often.  All look in good condition, a little frayed along edges in a few areas.

Comments: About 3-3/4″ wide, the design isn’t too dissimilar from the first piece listed about.  Very long with a tulip motif, nicely done. Seller gives no notes on condition, but what I can see looks very good.  Maybe a little brown staining? Hard to tell from the photos.

Offered by: Ebay seller greatlace, Paris – Palm Beach, United States
Comments: This isn’t the first piece of this lace to come up for sale recently; I bought a slightly, but not much shorter piece from a different seller about 2 years ago.  It appears to be made all in one piece – I can’t find any racroc stitches.  For your information, I also show a photo I took at about 25x magnification of my piece showing the ground, some of the ombre shading, and the cordonnet, which appears to be a bundle of about 4 threads. A design this good with such fine work is probably French.  Condition is very good, seller notes a small hole and a few rough spots at the top.

Offered by: Ebay seller discover4, London, United Kingdom
Comments: A Brussels Duchesse fan, unmounted with some old glue spots and minor pulls, basically good condition. A good crisply worked bold design, rather large motifs. Only two Point de Gaze inserts, one with raised roses. The needlelace seems in very good condition.

Comments: Quite an interesting Duchesse lappet scarf, note the rather extensive bride confusion in the center. The lace itself is well worked, note the raised elements  on halfstitch ground throughout. Naturalistic design, a little better than one usually sees.

Comments: A narrow Honiton scarf, looks in very good condition. Basically a snails/slugs design, except for the roses and associated leaves, which are beautifully done.  A nice looking piece.

Offered by: Ebay seller denicheur51, Bassu, France
Comments: This piece is so much fun that I wanted to put it up despite the rather major hole top center left. Irish Crochet technique, but I’m thinking it’s French from the extensive raised work and the balls and fringe, grapes and hanging fruit. The design is a bit thrown together, but I don’t care.

Offered by: Ebay seller mianna, Bassu, France
Comments: Seller gives a c1910 date, but I don’t know how that was obtained. Three bones in the structure.  Duchesse collar, typical flowers and leaves, some raised work on halfstitch ground.  No needlelace. Condition looks very good from the photos.

   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/9nnbaj6 ANTIQUE HEIRLOOM MALTESE SILK HAND LACE SHAWL BRIDAL ART NOUVEAU FLORAL c1900
Size: 79″ x 41″
Starting Price: 89.99 GBP
Auction ends: Sep 18, 2012 11:57:21 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller abfabs05, East Anglia, United Kingdom
Comments: A blonde silk Maltese shawl with a large central roundel (a bit overpowering) and two smaller ones in the upper ends of the triangle. This is a typical arrangement. This shawl is interesting because of the large spaces devoted to the plaited leaf ground; usually these areas are more filled with decoration.   It is a little less ‘layered’ with  narrow strips of lace than other examples. Good, extensive guipure work against the plaited ground, nicely done. Condition looks very good from the photos.

Sold for 161.00 GBP, 4 bidders.

Offered by: Ebay seller beyondthetower, SOMERSET, United Kingdom
Comments: I’m not entirely convinced this is Honiton, although it certainly is possible. Has more of a Bruges look to me. Honiton, even in its strongest snail/slugs incarnation has a lot of tally fillings, that’s not the case here. And note the ‘islands’ at the intersection of the brides, that’s a Bruge characteristic. And the overall motif design isn’t really Honiton. But not really Bruges either – I’m puzzled on this one. Condition looks very good from the photos.

Sold for 12.50 GBP, 5 bidders.

Offered by: Ebay seller gb-best, New Ringgold, Pennsylvania, United States
Comments: Belgian, Venise needlelace, with an some techniques taken from Point de Gaze. I don’t remember ever seeing anything quite like it. I like the design, and the work, for all it’s heaviness, is quite good.  Note the different fillings in the petals of the roses. And all the raised borders, almost a Gros Point effect.  A few broken brides, but overall good condition.

Comments: A Maltese mantilla headcover with lappet ends, which is nicely design but seams a bit the worse for wear. It could probably be blocked back into reasonable shape. Good guipure, lots of well done tally grounds. The lace itself doesn’t seem damaged, it’s mainly the edges that bother me.

Comments: A good example of a fairly common pattern, heart & tears is how I think of it.  A good long length – seller cites a few loose threads and broken brides, nothing serious. Overall very good condition.

Comments: A Honiton collar, note the feathery leaves, sign of a specific manufacturer, but I don’t k now who.  Definitely beyond the snails/slugs phase, although you can still see some of the winding tape-like quality in the 6 petaled flowers. Good tally fillings.  Seller cites minor pulls, but overall very good condition.

Comments: I was thinking Bruges, but after looking at the construction of the Rose, I’m guessing a Ghent piece. And the mesh looks needlemade (hard to tell) which could push this toward Point d’Angleterre. Nicely done, wish there were more of it. Good condition, I don’t see any problems in the photos.

Comments: A Brussels Duchesse handkerchief with oval medallions of Point de Gaze in the corners. The bobbinlace is worked quite finely.  No raised work in the needlelace. Condition appears very good from the photos, I don’t see any problems in the lace. Seller cites areas of storage discoloration.

Comments: What a curious piece.  The fan sticks are amazingly carved, and seller is probably accurate in saying that the base is 18th c.  The Honiton lace was added later and seems complete. I wonder if it was made specially for t his fan since it is a little odd in shape.  Well worked motifs of a more sophisticated design. There is some damage to the sticks, but the lace looks intact although perhaps a bit discolored.

Comments: Forget the strange little engrelure which was added later. This is a Flemish bobbinlace with brides, 2nd quarter 18th century. It has that kind of overdone Brabant look, but the work itself is quite fine, and it has some interesting snowflake variation fillings.  Condition looks good, a little fraying here and there and some holes in the clothwork, more like general wear, probably not made any better by an old washing. You can also see some yellow spots in the photos. A nice piece, good length, and the design looks intact.

Comments: This is a later 19th century Belgian piece which was commercially often known as ‘Point de Milan’. It can be good quality (like this piece), or pretty bad, and there’s a lot of the bad stuff around.  Here the bobbinlace motifs are crisp and well made, note the good raised work. Note the needlelace mesh which is basically used as a fillings. Nice picoted brides. Overall condition looks very good – I can spot a few small holes in the photos, but nothing serious.

Comments: It does look like a Honiton applique on machine net. The motifs are a larger than one finds in Brussels lace, and note the tally fillings along the edge. A few tiny holes in the net, particularly at the ends, but generally in good condition.

Comments: 19th c lappet scarf of Point de Gaze, probably 3rd quarter. Excellent condition and design. All you can see are a few yellow spots here and there. This is a flat piece, no raised petals, and points to a superior manufacturer. Note the extensive fine ‘mode’ fillings. Also note the ‘sitck-like’ picots along the edge, also a specific manufacturer mark, although we don’t know who it was.  This is a really beautiful piece.

Comments: It’s been a while since we’ve seen a really good, wide Point de Gaze flounce. Raised petal roses, good mode fillings and naturalistic design, rather densely packed.  The condition looks very good, I don’t see any problems from the photos. Seller cites some minor openings ‘near edge’, not quite sure what that means.

Comments: A Brussels bobbinlace application on machine net. Only a few needlelace rings used as fillings in some flowers.  It’s a long piece, with an extraneous tulle piece attached at the top which probably could be easily removed. The design is rather middle-market. Seller says it has three joins and some staining, I also see at least one minor hole in the net in the photos. Basically good condition.

Comments: A later 19th c Alençon border with réseau fin. Some, but not many decorative modes, and a little rempli variation used as fillings on the lower edge. The clothwork rempli is sold and well worked with the open twisted stitch, but little shading. Good naturalistic design and well done brode, plain and picoted. Seller cites a few tiny openings which I can’t spot from the photos, overall very good condition.

Comments: Looks like a Burano piece to me, imitation of Point d’Alençon. It’s much too tightly worked for a Brussels piece, and although I can’t see the fine detail, the brode looks overcast in place, not buttonholed.  It also has a good strong needlelace mesh (not bobbinmade droschel), and a very solid pattern. Condition looks very good, I can’t spot any problems from the photos.

Comments: A Brussels Duchesse handkerchief. No raised petals or elaborate modes in the Point de Gaze, but I like the pansy design.  Altogether quite a nice effect. Seller cites a little spotting, nothing major, overall very good condition.

Comments: An interesting Brussels bobbinlace application on machine net, with elaborate needlelace medallions.  The bobbinlace motifs are small and neatly done, while the ne3edlelace concentrates on a design of ring fillings.  Seller cites some holes near the ends, with some pinholes in the main part of the lace.  An unusual piece.

Comments: A wide Maltese collar with some excellent guipure work. It seems to be an exercise in matching patterns in the inner section, since the part with the end flowers is made of two lengths all around the collar. Nicely done. Condition looks very good from what I can see in the photos –  I don’t see any obvious defects.

Comments: A small Maltese scalloped edge collar that relies on some simple design elements – woven leaf lattice ground, one Maltese cross, and a simple plaited edge. I put this one up because of a conversation I was having with Jeri Ames the other day – can we actually find Maltese pieces that are not composed of matched strips sewn together? I think this is a candidate.  Condition looks good, maybe a little wrinkled in places.  Nice contrast to the previous piece.

Comments: Yet another Maltese collar, different from the last two examples.  This one has good guipure, combined with a more open, almost spidery ground.  Note the use woven leaves as veins in the leaves of the flower at the back inside edge.  This technique gives it a light appearance. Seller notes some fraying, odd broken bride and age discoloration, but generally good condition.

Offered by: Ebay seller greatlace, Paris – Palm Beach, United States
Comments: A Mechlin edging with a straight lower edge – you see this kind of design in certain Lille patterns also. The design has a simple border and large buds arranged in the upper ground – it is meant to be ruffled.  Very good condition, the lace is nicely intact, no pulls that I can see. Seller cites a few light age stains. The picots on the lower edge are quite prominent, and at first I thought it might be a machine edge sewn onto an earlier piece (common practice in the 19th c), but on closer examination you can see that it is part of the original lace.

Comments: This looks like it was originally one collar, but got cut at the back at some point, probably to accommodate a dress opening in back. Duchesse de Bruxelles, with the needlelace confined to a row of roses along the neck edge. Quite nicely done too, with a double layer of raised petals. Good raised work on the bobbinlace – definitely an upper market piece.  A few spots, and other than the separation, looks in very good condition.

Comments: A Brussels Duchesse fan leaf with rather large bobbin motifs and a big Point de Gaze insert in the center.  A bit hard to tell, but it looks in very good condition, probably because of the protection of the frame.

Offered by: Ebay seller abridav216, Beachwood, Ohio, United States
Comments: A banquet tablecloth. I think it’s a bobbin-made tape lace, although the tape is a bit rushed. Extensive bobbinlace fillings, and also some needlelace grounds. At first I thought it was Italian because the ends of some of the tapes are almost curling like Cantu, but then if they would put the time into a piece like this, why not do the Cantu hook formally? Now I think it’s probably a Belgian piece, because of the combination of tape lace and needle ground, also the bobbinlace coarse droschel-like ground in places. Like what they used to call Point de Milan. Condition looks good – seller notes a few spots and some broken brides, not serious. I think there might be some figural work, horses heads? in the corners.

Offered by: Ebay seller adtjmd, RED VELVET BENCH, United States
Comments: An Irish Crochet neckpiece and dress front, matching designs. Fairly large motifs tightly worked. The symmetry is a little off, but I like the massing of the large flowers and leaves along the bottom, with a more geometrical mesh and smaller motifs on top. Note the multilayered flowers.  Overall very good condition, seller cites age discoloration and rare broken bride, some soiling where hooks once were.

Comments: An Irish Crochet insertion. Motifs have some raised rings, and a rectangular picoted mesh.  Seller says it matches a recently listed collar, but I can’t find a really obvious resemblance.  See the next review.  Overall condition looks very good from the photos, no obvious damage.

Comments: An Irish Crochet collar with what look like Clones Knots decorating the loops along the edges.   The motifs are formed of narrow ‘tapes’ with the crochet done mainly in two layers on a base thread; these are twisted around into various patterns.  A little raised work, and roughly hexagonal picoted brides. Looks in very good condition.

Comments: A Duchesse collar, all bobbinlace.  Note the little frill added separately along the neck edge.  A collection of fairly standard motifs, but nicely arranged, and with some good raised work.  Condition appears very good, seller cites only one ‘slipped’ thread.

   No bids.
