Comments: Seller says this dates back to the 1920’s, but doesn’t give any reason for the statement. 20 bobbins, Cantu-type pillow with a partially completed Cantu lace on the pillow. These bolster pillows are hollow, and one can see this has been used for storage. The wood on the small stand and the inner tube facing seem to match.  A nice example, and condition looks very good. Probably faded except under the pattern if the date is really correct.

Comments: A deep, well done Irish Crochet collar. Tightly worked small motifs are a bit beyond the conventional designs, and note the looped corded technique used around some of the flowers. Also the interesting ornamentation inside the edge motifs. There seem to be some ‘darts taken around the shoulder area starting at the neckline – wonder if this is an adaptation of another piece or if it is deliberate. The neckline is a different pattern and may have been added later. There’s also some funny folding going on at the necklinecorners. Overall good condition, just a little fraying along the neckline, and seller cites some breaks in the brides that I can’t find in the photos. I think it’s a later piece – nicely done.

Comments: I find this set quite interesting, even beyond the fact that it has survived intact. The naturalistic oak leaves, and perhaps acorns? is an unusual motif even for a Brussels lace.   I’ve seen a few collars like this before with very naturalistic leaves, and they all are a puzzle. I wonder if it’s maybe a Ghent piece, note the ‘line-drawing effect in the acorns which is almost taken from Valenciennes. Overall condition very good, just a few loos threads along the border of the cuffs, probably clipped off from a sewing thread. Maybe a little problem along the inner edge of the collar just to center right? Nothing major.

Comments: You need to stare a lot at this piece.  Look at photo #12, and note the change in the net ground along the large border, and without really close photos it’s hard to interpret what is going on. But I think it’s a massive repair to the heavy border, and you can see how the rest of the ground is rather fragile, lots of holes. It’s almost a wholesale replacement of the ground, and I can’t tell if it is a machine tulle repair, or an actual reworking of the ground. I think this is a Lille or Arras piece, with shades of Beveran-like design. I’m thinking it might be an original design. From the uneven quality of the surviving point ground  (again a sign of Arras), I think the thread might be linen.

Comments: We must distinguish between the old Duchy of Brabant which contained the great lacemaking centers of Brussels, Mechlin, and Antwerp, with the ‘Brabant’ designation today given to certain coarser Belgian pieced bobbin laces. The latter is more a dealer’s term rather tan a true indication that a lace originated in the Brabant area. It is generally held to be a lace with large motifs with extensive bride and a coarse mesh. This one has no brides, and the mesh is an early plaited variation – not strictly the Brabant ‘definition’, but probably close enough. It is unusually long (but not so much for Brabant), and a bit narrow compared to other examples.  I think the design is largely intact, however I’m not too sure about the upper edge. Condition looks good, but there aren’t enough photos to say definitively about the entire length.

Comments: A high-end wide and very long Mechlin border, later 19th c. It has a curious combination of Mechlin and point grounds, although the point is more of a filling. And note the extensive use of woven tallies in the fillings.  The design is dense and complex, yet it appears very light.  Condition is very good, seller cites a few small ‘tanning’ marks and one tiny break at the top, all very minor.

Comments: Looks like a crinoline flounce of Belgian bobbinlace application on machine net. I can’t tell what they’ve done to the ends, photos not close enough, but it seems motified for a narrow shawl. Note the larger circular esprits in the ground. Needlelace is confined to a few simple rings at the center of flowers. Condition looks a bit wrinkled but the net looks intact from what I can see from the photos.

Comments: I’m a little bothered by this piece. It does have the look of Punto in Aria – the flatter kind that sometimes people think comes from  Spain, but is perfectly good Italian.  But look at the relief – it seems to be just one long wound cord sewn on the pattern with a tacking stitch every once in a while (sort of like what they sometimes did with Miracourt bobbinlace guipure). And look at the backside photo – there’s a lot of woven tape formed into the motifs. I think this is a later 19th c piece, using woven tape with a few needlelace fillings, then the cord was attached as relief later. The brides don’t look particularly old, and normally one expects loops on the lower border, not single picots.  I wouldn’t call it old Mezzo Punto, it just doesn’t look up to the quality of the older stuff. Plus, it is very, very long, which would be a remarkable survival.  Condition appears very good, which is another unusual thing for a very old piece.

Comments: A good example of the 18th century ‘flat grounded’ needlelace, the best ones were made in Belgium (where even today they are erroneously called ‘point de Venise à Reseau – a term that never in fact existed at the time these were made), or Italian  Burano. This has the less sophisticated look of Burano, but these laces were probably also made elsewhere. The pattern looks consistent with a sleeve ruffle – it might have been cut down at the ends, but hard to tell from the photos. It has two joins and some damage at the top, although I’m having a hard time spotting these.  I think it looks quite nice.
