http://tinyurl.com/6po9mm2 Large antique/vintage black lace shawl /stole
Size: 24″ x 96″
Starting Price: 30.00 GBP
Auction ends:Jun 11, 2012 11:26:18 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A rectangular Chantilly black silk shawl. Interesting design elements, no ombre shading that I can find. Unusual filling stitches, almost guipure-like. I’d put it later 19th c.  Seller cites 2 small repairs (can’t find these in the photos) and some tiny holes, otherwise it looks like very good condition.

Sold for 321.55 GBP, 6 bidders.

Auction ends: Jun 12, 2012 04:30:53 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller linen-cupboard, Crawcrook, Tyne and Wear, United Kingdom
Comments: A Maltese collar – I like the shape.  The design is pretty standard, and it does look like silk to me. A few small brown spots, otherwise good condition.

   Sold for 19.99 GBP, Buy-it-Now.

http://tinyurl.com/7hl6khm 18THC FLEMISH BOBBIN LACE WIDE 4 YARDS FROM ESTATE LACE COLLECTION
Size: 5.5″ x 142″
Starting Price: $24.99 with reserve
Auction ends: Jun 12, 2012 12:23:11 PDT
Offered by:  Ebay seller heartnsoul1, Hollis, New Hampshire, United States
Comments: Hmmm.  The piece is very long and condition a bit too good for a very early piece. I’m also bothered a bit by the technique of the foot edges – rather simple and the same on both sides for an insertion rather than a border. Earlier pieces were usually designed as borders. The 5-hole ground is certainly found in Milanese pieces, and the regular eyelets in the tape are also a Milanese characteristic. But the design is a bit abstract, and the work a tiny bit loose. I’m guessing, but I think it is a good 19th c copy of Milanese, maybe even Eastern European. Condition appears very good, I don’t see any problems from the photos.

$38.00, 2 bidders, reserve not met.

http://tinyurl.com/74dehym XVIIe – LOUPE DE DENTELLIERE Verre soufflé – NORMANDIE – Art populaire – 18eme
Size: 30.5 cm high, 10 cm foot diameter, 14 cm body diameter
Starting Price: 1.00 EUR
Auction ends: Jun 12, 2012 13:09:49 PDT
Offered by:  Ebay seller 2891pierre, Paris, France
Comments: A lacemaker’s lamp of the form illustrated in Jacqueline Bellanger’s “Verre d’usage et de prestige – 1500-1800” (published in 1988). I haven’t see this type before, and perhaps this author has more information on the actual date of the piece. There is some unfortunate calcification on the inner glass surface, but the glass is in very good condition.

Sold for 530.00 EUR, 17 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/6nrmyn8 Antique Honiton bobbin lace lovely handkerchief
Size: 15″ x 14.5″
Starting Price: 19.99 GBP
Auction ends: Jun 13, 2012 08:09:40 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller discover4, London, United Kingdom
Comments: A Honiton handkerchief, snails/slugs design, but tightly worked with good tally grid fillings.  I think it detect a few light stains, seller cites minor pulls and one breaks. Overall good condition.

Sold for 19.99 GBP, 1 bidder.

http://tinyurl.com/79h7bp2 Antique Honiton handmade lace on h/made Droschel ground small hat veil
Size: 9.5″ x 30″
Starting Price: 29.99 GBP
Auction ends: Jun 13, 2012 08:32:54 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller discover4, London, United Kingdom
Comments: Definitely a hat veil, although a little smaller and narrower than usual. Note the thread through the top loops which gathers the veil around the back of a bonnet. I think it’s Belgian applique on beautiful droschel ground – the very best net ever made. Note the sprigs in the ground, the wide border of repeating flower sprays, and the regular border around 3 sides.  It does have some pulls in the ground, but pieces like this (pre 1830) don’t come up very often (I’ve only seen 3 others on Ebay in the past year), and this is in overall good condition.

Sold for 49.50 GBP, 4 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/7t2jf5y Antique unusual Honiton handmade bobbin lace hat veil or flounce
Size: 21″ x 53″
Starting Price: 29.99 GBP
Auction ends: Jun 13, 2012 08:32:54 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller discover4, London, United Kingdom
Comments: This is a nice contrast to the previous piece. Bobbinlace applique on machine net, and the larger motifs and extensive fillings point to Honiton.  It is a bit long for a hat veil and the plain top edge is puzzling. I wonder if it might be meant as an apron. But it certainly could be used as a veil. The technique is nicely done with very even clothwork. As is normal with old machine tulle net, this one has some holes, but fairly minor.

Sold for 67.00 GBP, 6 bidders.

Auction ends: Jun 14, 2012 02:30:44 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller euterpe44, Romainville, Île-de-France, France
Comments: An interesting length of Irish crochet. Looped raised work forming flowers, and note the Clones knots in the bride structure.  A long, collectible piece, in very good condition.

Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: A Duchesse fan that has a Bruges look to it.  No needlelace, and some fairly straightforward motifs.  The lace is in very good condition, one guard stick is damaged.

Jun 14, 2012 18:39:23 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller greatlace, Paris – Palm Beach, United States
Comments: Two similar Irish Crochet collars from the same seller, so I’ll put them together. Highly likely they are from the same manufacturer. Both are quite nicely done, the first with heavy motifs around the edge, the second more a Rose of Sharon/horseshoe pattern.  Both are in excellent condition. They could be child size, or maybe just small collars.

      No bids on either.

http://tinyurl.com/8yat6uq ANTIQUE LACE VERY NICE WIDE FLOUNCE OF HANDMADE POINT DE GAZE LACE

Starting Price: $45.99 with reserve
Auction ends: Jun 14, 2012 19:05:15 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller greatlace, Paris – Palm Beach, United States
Comments: A wide Point de Gaze flounce, no raised work, with good fillings. It’s quite a nice design, not just the conventional roses. Condition is very good, despite a few small holes. For a piece this size and quality these are minor considerations.

$202.50, 2 bidders, reserve not met.

Offered by: Ebay seller pursediva, Beautiful California!, United States
Comments: A tatted handkerchief. Note the motifs tied together, indicating an earlier origin.  The rather crowded design gives a very frilly look, do the closeups to appreciate the detail. Condition looks very good, I don’t see any problems from the photos. Seller does state that it has been ‘freshly laundered’.

http://tinyurl.com/7ppkxs5 ANTIQUE BLACK MALTESE BEDFORDSHIRE LACE SHAWL
Size: 6′ 6″ x 6′ 6″
Starting Price: 50.00 GBP
Auction ends: Jun 09, 2012 06:47:17 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller amberfarleigh, Willington, Co Durham, United Kingdom
Comments: Probably black silk, a Maltese shawl. I’m also not sure if it is square or triangular. Despite the similarity to Beds plaited laces, there is no evidence that pieces of this size incorporating the Maltese cross were made in England. They also aren’t very rare, I have 4 large triangular shawls of similar work in my collection. This one is quite nice with well-done guipure motifs and a regular square ground of leaves. There is some damage in the leaf ground that might not be trivial to fix (as are most seam separations  you normally see in this lace). Otherwise good condition, and this is quite a nice example.

Sold for 123.01 GBP, 4 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/7vnn6h3 ANTIQUE LACE FABULOUS WIDE HANDMADE FLOUNCE UNUSED POINT DE GAZE POINT DE ROSE
Size: 8.5″ x 94.5″ not counting engrelure.
Starting Price: $49.99
Auction ends: Jun 09, 2012 16:22:42 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller greatlace, Paris – Palm Beach, United States
Comments: A wide flounce of original length Point de Gaze which appears unused.  Seller cites only one small age stain. Note the slightly pointed raised petals, sign of a better manufacturer. I can only nitpick a bit on the rather conventional design and lack of interesting filling jours, but for size, condition, and purity of the technique, it is very good.

   Sold for $599.00, 9 bidders.

Starting Price: 170.00 EUR
Auction ends: Jun 09, 2012 23:39:51 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller clame2011, Mestre, VE, Italy
Comments: This was made by the seller’s grandmother, a lacemaker for 80 years. A lovely wired flower – needlelace workers should do more of this kind of work. Hmmm… Maybe we will.

   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/7uf26lt SUP RARE & ANCIEN FUSEAU DE COLLECTION COTTIER AVEC SA PELOTE DE FIL DENTELLIERE
Size: 8.8 cm long
Starting Price: 8.00 EUR
Auction ends: Jun 10, 2012 10:38:17 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller 2301pascale, France
Comments: A unique bobbin by the French manufacturer Cottier. Actually he made equipment, not really lace, and wrote some interesting pattern books.  Turn of the (last) century – his first book was published in 1902.  It really isn’t very practical, but is a marvelous idea. I once saw a whole set of these with an original Cottier pillow.
Condition looks excellent.

Sold for 73.35 GBP, 10 bidders.

Starting Price: 50.00 GPB
Auction ends: Jun 10, 2012 13:02:05 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller oooptafagv, lincolnshire, United Kingdom
Comments: I don’t often review mixed machine-tape pieces like this, but I though this one was especially nice. Better pieces are often attributed to places like Branscome, but I don’t think so here. It has more of a Belgian feel with the mesh and bride ground, and it has a good, bold design. Almost like the contemporary Point de Milan Belgian pieces. Condition looks very good from what I can see in the photos.

   No bids.

Offered by: Ebay seller andr7569, Antwerpen, Belgium
Comments: See my collecting post on Vlaams Aardewerk lacemakers at  http://tinyurl.com/4baktku. These plate sets don’t come up very often, but are always a pair with a spinster and lacemaker.  This set does not have a maker’s mark, although the seller says it is Bruges manufacture. I don’t know how that conclusion is made.  I’ve never seen this set before, and they appear to be in very good condition.

Offered by: Ebay seller nutting13, Finger Lakes NY, United States
Comments: A Point de Gaze handkerchief, raised petal roses, some double. Some nice jour fillings arranged in the corners. The design is nicely worked into the center linen. A few small holes in the mesh, otherwise good condition.

   Sold for $117.50, 6 bidders.

Starting Price: $45.00 with reserve
Auction ends: Jun 11, 2012 09:02:25 PDT
Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: A Point de Gaze fan with decorated Mother of Pearl sticks.  No raised work on the lace, and the design goes beyond the standard rose/leaf pattern.  It works very well as a folding fan. Seller notes some age spots on the fan, otherwise very good condition. A few small issues with the sticks.

   Sold for $495.00, 7 bidders.

Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: A very beautiful Brussels Duchesse piece, and I don’t think it has been cut from something larger. Both ends look nicely finished. Must have been used as a train or skirt piece. Note how the Point de Gaze phlox-like flowers match the ones in the bobbinlace lower border – unusual. And look at the shading in the needlelace leaves. No raised work in the needlelace, aside from a few high relief rings. Note also the grid of needlelace fillings outside of the center insert.  Hard to think how something like this could be better.  I don’t see any condition issues from the photos.

Comments: A Point de Gaze handkerchief. No raised work, and some nice fillings, especially in the corners.  It has a pleasing, well filled design. Condition looks very good from the photos, seller cites a few tiny repairs.  This seller has been posting some very nice items recently.

Offered by: Ebay seller doylymolly, UK, United Kingdom
Comments: A long, narrow Point de Gaz border. Simple design, nothing fancy in the technique, but it looks very nice, and is a good collectible length. Condition appears very good, seller cites two negligible pinholes.

Comments: A bertha collar of Brussels Duchesse. No raised work on the Point de Gaze inserts. Overall a good, cohesive design, quite well made.  It does seem just a little small in the neck edge for a full bertha collar. Looks in very good condition, I don’t see any problems from the photos.

Offered by: Ebay seller doylymolly, UK, United Kingdom
Comments: A Beds Maltese handkerchief.  I like the architectural design. Good overall technique with lots of raised work. Probably 3rd quarter 19th c.  Condition looks excellent, and seller cites no defects.

   Sold for $136.47, 5 bidders.

Size: not given
Starting Price: $59.99
Auction ends: Jun 05, 2012 17:43:54 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller nardtique7, Milwaukee Area, United States
Comments: A good example of the Torchon Lace Company’s Princess Lace Machine, patented in 1903. This much hyped, but not very practical equipment was just about the only commercial bobbinlace equipment available in the USA in the first quarter of the 20th c. It looks original with the typical green patterned cover.  One pattern is mounted on the roller, but it doesn’t seem to have any bobbins, literature, or the rare wooden packing case that you sometimes see.  It is only slightly worn, and overall good condition.

   Sold for $66.00, 2 bidders.

Offered by: Ebay seller merveillesdeparis, PARIS, France
Comments: A Chantilly fan in very good condition. I like the contrast with the faux tortoise-shell sticks. Note the raised monogram on the guardstick. The lace design is a bit conventional, but nicely done. I don’t see any damage from the photos to the lace. This is the second nice Chantilly fan I’ve seen from this seller.

Offered by: Ebay seller zarafabrocante, Nantes, France
Comments: An interesting fan with a leaf of Brussels application non machine net. Good lace design – it almost looks like there is room for a monogram at the center.  Bobbin motifs are small and well done. The sticks are heavily pierced and carved, but damaged. Maybe a bit frayed along the top edge of the lace, but overall good condition. I don’t see any obvious defects. The elaborate sticks do seem to overwhelm the lace a bit, but that’s just my opinion.

Comments Offered by Debra Bonito, author of Graced by Lace”. This piece is not in her book.  It is one of those indeterminate bobbinlace guipures that are so hard to identify. Maybe Miracourt? Somewhere in France. Condition looks very good from the photos.

Offered by: Ebay seller 1artdecodiva, Tipp City, Ohio, United States
Comments: A better quality Duchesse de Bruxelles fan with mother of perl sticks and bone ‘slips’ (I’ve been studying handfan collecting terminology http://tinyurl.com/7ergzp3).  This arrangement of lace with MOP is very common, and you don’t often fine very good examples. I like this one a lot – note the pointed raised petal roses in the point de gaze insert – sign of a better manufacturer. The lace looks in very good condition, and it comes with the original box. Seller notes a few defects to the ribs.

Comments: 2nd half 19th c Valenciennes border – quite wide. The photos aren’t close enough to definitively say it’s handmade, but it does have that feel. Condition looks good, seller notes a few spots and 2 small holes.

Comments: Later 19th, early 20th c figural Mechlin handkerchief. Nice little deer in the corners, and the attachment to the center cloth is done with a lot of care. Assuming the 8.5″ is along one side of the piece, this is quite a small hanky, and the lace is probably more delicate than it looks in the photos.Good careful work, and the condition looks very good.

Comments: A Brussels Duchesse handkerchief. The bobbinlace is well done with raised work on halfstitch background. I especially like the masses of small 5-petal flowers. Needlelace inserts seem to have raised petal roses, a bit hard to tell. The design is rather crowded, but I like the density; quite effective. Overall very good condition, seller cites only trivial blemishes.

Comments: The bobbinlace of these mid 18th c lappets looks like original design has been preserved, but the motifs have been appliqued onto a new ground (at least I think it’s applique). It’s difficult to tell how the new ground was made – might be machine. Not sure. It’s a well done substitution, but still is a major modification. The original work is Belgian, nicely done with some interesting fillings especially at the ends. The join in the center is also a modification, but looks pretty seamless. Overall good condition.

Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: I’d call it Honiton Point, with what looks like a needlelace ground. One could argue a Brussels lace, but it just doesn’t have the right design feel for Belgium. And the inner edge, which has a looped design that is seen in Honiton. If English, then it’s definitely a higher quality product, with well worked small motifs. It has a nice English flower garden scattered feel, in very good condition. I can’t see anything wrong from the photos.

Comments: I think it’s a fan leaf. Note the single row at the left edge, which overlays the guard stick. The lace has the bridework often associated with Bruges. There’s a needlelace grounded bobbin motif in the center , with smaller efforts at the sides – unusual. Overall it’s a pretty bold design, but the condition is rather off. Some holes in the needlelace ground, and lots of broken brides.  An interesting piece.

   Sold for $45.00, 1 bidder.

Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: An early 18th c Flemish lace, similar to contemporary work from Milan. I think this is Flemish because of the finer thread and the simple brides and outer edges. Nice holes and divisions in the clothwork, and some interesting fillings. The piece appears intact and in very good condition.  Nice technical work.

Comments: A good Brabant bobbinlace, 2nd quarter 17th c. This is basically a lace made in Belgium, but outside the more refined lacemaking centers in Brussels and Ghent. It can be very good, but more often has a slightly unsophisticated design, but often lots of yardage. Note the combination bride and plaited mesh ground, typical of this lace. The condition of this piece is good, several frayed areas and repairs shown in the photos, but not bad considering the age.

Auction ends: Jun 04, 2012 09:21:14 PDT
Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: This piece is a nice complement to the previous Brabant piece. Same general idea, but over 200 years later. It looks like a Bruges piece, although the center ‘M/flower’ motif is more in the style of Ghent Valenciennes de Gand.  Seller notes two small openings, and I think I see a few pinholes in the square mesh. But overall very good condition.

Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: This looks like bobbbinlace application on droschel ground, probably before 1830. The handmade net is made in strips, and you can see some of the joining lines especially in the last photo. The droschel net is wonderful and drapes beautifully – even the best machine net can’t compare. The bobbinlace motifs are nicely done, and note all the sprigs in the ground. Normally these bonnet veils have a wide border along one edge, and a narrower border along the remaining two, sometimes three sides. They don’t come up for sale that often. This piece does have a lot of small holes and repairs, but there isn’t a complete photo, and it doesn’t look in that bad condition.  It is well worth just feeling a wonderful piece like this.

   Sold for $116.00, 4 bidders.

Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: A good Brussels Duchesse bertha with double layer petals on the Point de Gaze roses.  It has a good, cohesive design, and looks in very good condition. I do wonder if the neck edge is maybe cut down, it doesn’t seem as nicely finished as the outer edge. Most berthas like this have a straight neck edge in the form of a little ring of buds for easy attachment to a gown.

Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: A long length of Alençon that appears to be in very good condition despite a few small holes and stains. It has the light appearance of late 18th very early 19th c work.  At 3″ wide, this piece is a lot finer than it looks in the photos.

$81.00, 3 bidders, reserve not met.

Offered by: Ebay seller valeu7reuxlidjwes, Liège, Belgium
Comments: Not sure why this bobbin winder is labeled as coming from Le Puy. I tend to think of these upright ones as English or Belgian. They are a lot of fun, both as works of art, and in attempting to get them to work properly. This one isn’t as fall as some I’ve seen, but it does not look like a modern copy. I have a similar one with a straight peg instead of a disc as the lower key, and with a wooden extension on the handle.  Looks in very good shape.

Comments: A Honiton handkerchief with an unusual cross shaped center. Note the inked name. The lace is quite good, a little snails/slugs, but with some nice refinement. Condition looks very good, I don’t see any problems from the photos. Seller cites a few small repairs.

Comments: Two lappets of Mechlin with early fond de neige and five-hole grounds, around 1730. Beautiful designs and workmanship. The condition also looks excellent, although I will gripe slightly about them being cut through the design at the tops. These are rare pieces.

   Sold for $1,200.00, 4 bidders.

Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: The name Point de Venise a Reseau should never be used in connection with a piece like this. Point à l’Aiguille Belge is the preferred name. This lace never came near Italy. It is Belgian needlelace, and when well done (this is a fair example) some of the finest lace ever made. It has the same ‘line drawing’ effect as contemporary Valenciennes. This piece has some damage to the reseau, but overall is in good condition.

http://tinyurl.com/7xmpkhb ANTIQUE LACE-LOVELY MECHLIN LACE DESIGN
Size: 2-3/4″ x 54″
Starting Price: $45.00 with reserve
Auction ends: May 06, 2012 10:07:34 PDT
Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: A Mechlin border with a dense pattern of naturalistic flowers at the lower edge, and sprigs in the upper ground.  Note the extensive use of halfstitch shading in the largest flowers.  Note also the unusual straight lower border, which does seem to be part of the design. Seller cites a few loose threads on the header, trivial. Overall very good condition.

   Sold for $220.49, 2 bidders.

Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: Second quarter 18th c, a Valenciennes border with cinq trou ground. Valenciennes of this period experimented with several grounds before settling on the round hole, and later square hole meshes.  This is a very fine piece, not the small width, and the good line-drawing patterns in the clothwork. Interesting almost plaid-like filling stitch in places.  This kind of lace is one of my favorites. It does have some condition issues, a little worse for wear, but not bad considering the age. Wish there were more of it.

   Sold for $75.00, 1 bidder.

Offered by: Ebay seller linskapet, Kirkcudbright, Dumfries & Galloway DG6 4UU, United Kingdom
Comments:  A good length of Point de Gaze with raised petal roses. Note the diamond windows in the raised petals, sign of a better manufacturer. A fairly conventional design, but nicely arranged.  The lace looks in good crisp condition, although there are a number of small holes in the mesh – not easy to repair.

Comments:  An interesting Mechlin border, fairly wide, with a decided Beveran design aspect.  You do find these designs both in point ground and Mechlin ground.  The technique is quite well done, and not the typical straight border.  Condition looks good, although there are a number of small holes in the ground. Also two seams.

Comments: A Brussels Duchesse bertha with raised rose petals on the Point de Gaze inserts. I don’t see any raised work on the bobbinlace motifs, just gimp outlines – sort of a Bruges look to it. The condition appears very good, I spotted only one tiny pinhole in a needlelace motif ground. Almost looks unused.

Comments: A Brussels Duchesse bertha, similar to the one described above. There is no raised work in either the needlelace or bobbinlace on this one, and it has the same Bruges look to it. The design here seems more formally organized, and the work in the bobbinlace a little tighter. Condition is very good, appears unused.

Offered by: Ebay seller awaw, Lincolnville, Maine, United States
Comments: A Point de Gaze collar, no raised work, in very good condition. Just a few loose threads in places along the outer edge. The work is quite crisp, and note the almost entire absence of picots – just a few loops along the outer edge. This is a nice piece – I think it might be a later 19th, early 20th c work.  It is simple and complex all at once.  Seller has some indication of the history of the piece.

Comments: Yet another Brussels Duchesse bertha! No raised work on either bobbin or needlelace, with the same Bruges-like look to it. Condition appears very good – seller notes a few possible broken brides, and a mismatch in the end designs. Although it looks original to me.

Comments: An Irish Crochet collar with extensive Clones knots ground.  High quality technical work with raised elements in the main flower center.  There isn’t too much variation in the motifs and the design is a bit haphazard, as you sometimes see in pieces like this. Condition appears very good, I don’t see any problems from the photos given. Seller notes age discoloration.

Offered by: Ebay seller gede34, dans mon grenier, France métropolitaine
Comments: The photos aren’t close enough to tell, but I’m guessing Point d’Angleterre. A closer examination of the mesh might show that it is a machine tulle, but the work is so fine that a needlemade mesh isn’t out of the question. A sweet piece in very good condition. The bobbin motifs are well made and nicely scaled.  Simple picoted rings fill the outer flowers. If there’s any damage I can’t spot it from the photos given.

Comments: The Brussels Duchesse handkerchief, interesting design especially in the Point de Gaze inserts. Good needlelace fillings, no roses, which is unusual. Bobbinlace motifs are well done. Condition seems very good, I don’t see any problems from the photos given.

Comments: A large Honiton Guipure handkerchief. The roses are well worked, and overall the design breaks out of snails/slugs mode – almost completely. Good square picoted mesh, and the other edge is quite detailed. The condition appears very good, seller notes one small pulled area.

Comments: These do look bobbinlace-made. Could be Spanish or French – any number of places.  There are two short lengths, which look in very good condition from the photos, although the cut ends aren’t shown. Lace like this tends to crumple badly, but these look quite nice.

Offered by: Ebay seller thingsnstuff, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, United States
Comments: The doily isn’t the best, but the letter accompanying it helps make this piece.  I don’t know much about the history of ñanduti lace, but if the date is contemporary, good quality work was being made around 1951.  I’m not entirely sure I understand the references to the flowers and how they relate to the motifs, but it is a good topic for investigation. The lace itself looks in good condition, although hard to spot problems against the light background.

Comments: A high-end Point de Gaze fan with inlaid Mother-of-Pearl sticks. No raised work on the lace, but this is not a problem. Good jour fillings, and note the shading work on the flowers. It’s not a typical Point de Gaze design, but points more toward Art Nouveau stye. Not the absolute greatest design, but very good technique, and the condition appears excellent. I couldn’t spot any problems from the photos, and the sticks are also in good shape.

Comments: A high end Point de Gaze handkerchief with a well-done monogram. No raised work in the needlelace, and the jours are limited to padded rings. But the whole effect is quite beautiful (you don’t always need roses). Seller notes a small shading mark, and one very small repair, but overall very good condition.

Comments: A Slovak costume bonnet, I don’t know anything about Slovakian folk costumes, so will trust the seller on this one. The lace appears to be a point ground, more along Bucks or Lille tradition. Slovakia is known for freehand laces, and I don’t know if they had a point ground tradition.  The rest of the cap is a colored embroidered net, and together these two are very effective.  Condition appears very good, I don’t see any problems from the posted photos.

Comments: Normally I don’t review pieces that have been cut like this, but the pattern of this Brussels Duchesse design is quite nice. The Point de Gaze inserts are well executed with raised petal roses, and there is good raised work and shading on the bobbinlace. The width is quite collectible.  Overall good condition, seller cites some age discoloration.

Comments: A Point d’Angleterre piece bobbinlace with Point de Gaze mesh.  The motifs are nicley done with some raised work, although a little large and not too varied. Note the rings used as esprits in the ground – no other needlelace fillings. The length of this piece is very good, and seller cites some age spots, but no damage to the lace itself.

Offered by: Ebay seller calicogre, Ottawa, ON, Canada
Comments: A good, basic Bruges-looking collar.  I put this up because the seller brings up Irish bobbinlace. Patricia Wardle in “Victorian Lace” summarizes what is known about Irish bobbinlace – there was a small 18th c industry, with a revival in mid 19th c. The Dublin Normal Lace School copied Bucks lace in silk and cotton. Some imitations of Brussels application was made at the Convent of Mercy at Parsonstown and in Limerick. Some Valenciennes was produced in Limerick and the Belfast Industrial School. Some Torchon and colored Russian laces were also produced. All of these were minor efforts.  But most bobbinlace was an imitation Honiton, not high quality. It was produced at the Industrial School of the Convent of Mercy in Dublin, the Belfast Industrial School, the Convent of Mercy , Kinsale, and by Misses Digges Latouche of Killmaule. These were done around 1840-1850, in the later 19th c, Irish Honiton was limited to Birr and Parsonstown. I haven’t been able to find any photos of representative pieces.
Without more data on ‘Irish Honiton’, I hesitate to attribute this to Ireland, even with the trefoil motifs. It has a lot of similarity to Bruges, which for the moment is my preference.

Comments: A Point de Paris mat made in Turnhout, Belgium. It must have been part of a set at one time, but the piece stands well by itself. No human or animal figures in the design, just nicely done foliage.  Condition appears very good, seller cites minor age spots.

Comments: A Brussels Duchesse handkerchief. I’m quite struck at how the Point de Gaze flowers seem to float within the bobbinlace borders. It seems to be because the needlelace is used over such a large area – usually it is confined to much smaller cartouches. And look at the little sprigs coming off the ovals at the corners of the center cloth – so realistic. All very effective use of traditional design elements.  The needlelace is basically flat, but there’s good raised work on the bobbinlace. Photos really aren’t detailed enough to look at condition closely, but it seems in very good shape.

   Sold for $373.68, 4 bidders.

Comments: A bobbinlace application on machine net – Honiton applique is certainly an option, although it doesn’t really have that spiral feel you see in many Honiton flowers. There are some woven tally fillings, and no raised edges on the motifs – it’s all just thick gimp. The design seems fine from a distance, but closeup it’s a little rough. Not sure what to make of this. I do like the way one end that I can see seems complete. Overall good condition, just a few stains and minor holes in the net.

Comments: A Maltese collar with some nice guipure work just inside the neckline.  It’s hard to say if this is silk or cotton – it doesn’t seem to have the shin of silk. But that might be a trick of the light. The technique is quite nice, good use of traditional design elements. Condition from what I can see looks very good.

Comments: A good Honiton applique on machine net.  Most of the work has gone into the corner sprays of flowers, which are nicely executed. Comments: David Woodlock (1842-1929) was a British watercolor artist, working primarily in Liverpool.  I’ve been looking up some of the prices of his works and this isn’t out of line. Be sure to contact the seller with questions, a phone number is listed. Wish I knew the size of this work.

Ebay Alerts! Eleven items – April 26, 2012

http://tinyurl.com/ce3t3ub Mercerie ancienne- Dentelle ( guipure ) noire largeur: 26 cm, longueur: 7,40 m .
Size: 26 cm x 7.40 m
Starting Price: 140.00 EUR
Auction ends: Apr 29, 2012 05:51:08 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller maryse8245, Saint claude, Franche-Comté, France
Comments: A long, ~10″ wide Le Puy Guipure border of black silk. Typical elements are the picoted star-shaped ground, long tallies forming leaves, and the smaller flowers in cartouches on a point ground. There aren’t enough photos to really assess condition, but from what I can see it looks good. Maybe a few loose brides in the ground.

Sold for 140.00 EUR, 1 bidder.

http://tinyurl.com/7l4cezq 160cms x 11cms Lille Bobbin Lace c1820
Size: 11 cm x 160 cm
Starting Price: 25.00 GBP
Auction ends: Apr 29, 2012 08:11:56 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller lunnantiques, London, London, United Kingdom
Comments: Not enough closeups – it could be an Arras piece, although the mesh looks a little funny. Like there’s an elongated leg more typical of Mechlin, and I wouldn’t count that out. The straight border edge, very thin design and esprits in the ground, are all characteristic of Arras, but Hannover in ‘Tønderske Kniplinger” shows both Arras and Mechlin of similar design. Seller notes a few small holes and a jagged tear at one end, overall basically good condition. I agree with the seller’s date.

Sold for 79.00 GBP, 2 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/72b3yc2 ANTIQUE Handmade MALTESE BLACK SILK LACE SCARF
Size: 65″ X ~6″ average, 7″ at ends
Starting Price: 7.99 GBP
Auction ends: Apr 29, 2012 11:51:26 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller lacisfair, Surrey, United Kingdom
Comments: A black silk Maltese lappet scarf.  The design is fairly standard St. John’s crosses and rosettes and grids of leaves.  The ground is quite wiry.  Sometimes I think pieces like this (and you see big shawls of this stuff) aren’t from Malta, but maybe France or even Russia. It’s an area that needs clarification.  This one looks in basically good condition – few small breaks, but a little wrinkled.

Sold for 79.10 GBP, 5 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/8yue5ko BEAUTIFUL 17th CENTURY FLEMISH LINEN BOBBIN LACE c1670-90

Offered by: Ebay seller vanye90, UK, United Kingdom
Comments: Really wish there were more of this – it’s lovely. Sculptural motifs with just enough interesting fillings. Note the use of holes in the tape. This is a lace that stems from contemporary development in Italian needlelace like Gros Point. I will, however, argue for an Italian Milanese origin. Flemish laces tended to use a bar ground, not the plaited mesh. See figure 208 in Levey’s “Lace, A History”, it is very similar to the Milanese piece illustrated. Good condition considering the age, I don’t consider the holes a particularly major problem in a piece of this quality.

Comments: This seller has some other prickings listed of similar quality 360452805520,
360452805630.They seem to be a mix of styles, I’m guessing Point de Paris, maybe some Lille? They are quite high quality, and I don’t recognize them from modern works. Maybe someone else does?  All look in good condition, and the pinholes could easily be transferred to another pattern.

   Sold for $33.99, 3 bidders.

Comments: Comes with a photo of a Chicago bride wearing the piece.Note the pearl headpiece attached somehow to the lace.  Brussels application on machine net, with lots of esprits in the ground. A fairly simple design, but the net drapes beautifully, and overall it is quite effective.  Looks in very good condition, just a few small brown spots. No tears or pinholes noted by seller

Comments: A rectangular Point de Gaze shawl with provenance.Condition appears very good, just 3 small holes per seller. It strikes me as very similar in design and technique to another rectangular shawl, see Ebay Alerts http://tinyurl.com/7jj7rl2. My review of that one applies to this.

Comments: A flat Point de Gaze handkerchief with a name in ink on the center cloth. The work and fillings are quite simple, and note the esprits in the ground. An effective design.  A few small holes and spots, overall good condition, and I like how the edges are quite crisp. Never seems to have been laundered, very good.

Starting Price: $24.99
Auction ends: Apr 29, 2012 18:06:34 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller adtjmd, RED VELVET BENCH, United States
Comments: A Duchesse collar or dress front – it has no needlelace and I think it has a Bruges flavor.  Good design – I like the way the leaves escape out from the center part just below the collarbone. Also like the neckline treatment.  Very good technique, and note the complex scrolls laid on halfstitch down the center points. Condition looks very good, seller notes a little fraying along the neckline.

      Sold for $138.20, 4 bidders.

Comments: A Duchesse de Bruxelles collar, the neckpiece appears to a separate attached piece. Excellent technique on the bobbinlace, and note the unusual Point de Gaze oval inserts just below the neck piece front edge.  Condition appears very good, seller notes minor bride breaks. Nothing serious.

   Unsold.
