Comments: A long, reasonably wide Flemish bobbinlace border, ~2nd quarter 18th c. the lace is interesting, despite the poor condition – note the extensive holes and also repairs. But the basic design appears intact. Someone valued this piece. I immediately notice the ground, and I mean the original, not replaced ground, which seems to be a plaited 5-pointed stitch. Not the irregular droschel one would expect in a Brabant piece. There aren’t really enough photos, but I do note the consistent use of only one type of filling, and some halfstitch.  I’m wondering if this piece might be English.

Comments: A Maltese collar with long lappet-type streamers. the basic design of the collar is the often-seen pattern of dense woven leaves with one inset Maltese cross. This is bordered on the outside with alternating Maltese crosses and flowers. The neckline is a fairly simple 4-leaf with brides pattern which continues down the lappets along with the dense leaf filling.  Condition appears very good, maybe just a little ragged along the edges, but nothing serious.

Comments: A rectangular shawl of Brussels application on machine net. The border has bobbinlace motifs, but the net is a bit confusing. It appears to be two layers, a black piece with the small circular dots, and a white net beneath.  This is definitely not typical of Brussels application, but it seems to work beautifully, and I don’t see any problems with the condition. Seller cites a provenance. It’s a very interesting piece.

Comments: A Point d’Angleterre handkerchief, one of the best of the later 19th c Belgian laces.  Condition is excellent, looks unused. Same provenance as the previous piece. It doesn’t have quite as over-the-top design as some P d’A pieces I’ve seen, and the motifs are a little large. But the technical work is good, with some nicely done needlelace fillings. The needlelace ground sets off the motifs very well.

Comments: A hat veil of Honiton appliqued on machine net. It comes with a great box from Madame De l’Orme-Wylde, Eaton Square SW (I don’t know where that is). I don’t know her exact role in the history of this piece; manufacturer or just antique lace dealer. The veil has a narrow edge on all sides, and has some large sprigs in the ground. Snails/slugs esthetic, nicely done. Looks in very good condition, although a few photos show some lines in the net which may be repairs, or maybe just folds.

Comments: A well-done bertha of Belgian lace sometimes called Point de Milan by manufacturers. Although the photos aren’t close enough, I’m thinking it will have a large-mesh needlelace ground. This is a very good example of a kind of lace that often suffers in design. Not here. Condition looks very good – I don’t see any problems from the photos.

Comments: A later 19thc Brussels Duchesse fan with mother of pearl and bone sticks. One Point de Gaze insert with a raised petal rose. It’s a pretty standard product, and the bobbinlace is a little openly worked, giving it a light appearance. The condition is very good, it apparently has been mounted for about 50 years. Only some very minor spots.  Nice to see something like this treated with such respect.

Comments: A Chantilly fan – I’ll take as a mark of handmade the little loops on the insides of some of the small circle. Almost Honeycomb, but this is the only place you find it. Wish there were some closeups of the edges. Seems to date from at least 1888, and has the original box (not shown). From the Overlook Mansion estate in Little Falls, NY. It has a roughly symmetric design right and left, and looks to be in very good condition. I don’t see any problems with the lace itself.

Comments: A Maltese collar and handkerchief.  The collar is the better piece, good guipure flowers, and an interesting lattice ground with woven leaf crosses. The hankie depends a lot on grids of leaf tallies, and a rather conventional Maltese cross border. The crosses seem to have the same leaf tally fillings between their points in the two pieces – could indicate the same manufacturer. Not enough photos to get a really good idea of condition, but from a distance they look quite good.  Maybe a loose spot here and there, nothing serious. Seller notes a little wear to the silk center of the handkerchief.

The clothwork includes a few stitch variations that normally aren’t used in this lace, especially along the leaves on the lower edge. Overall this depends on the short, vertical repeat for effect, which is nicely designed. It has a very light effect, even for Point de Gaze.  A few pinholes and pulls in the mesh, but overall very good condition, except for having been cut in half..

Comments: This bobbin winder is from the Haute Loire region, and is very well made. It does seem to have lost the ‘windmill’ vanes – the back arm pulls out to accommodate their rotation. The arm is in a quite unusual horseshoe shape, nicely carved.  Seems to be in good working order.

Comments: This is a really nice Bruges Duchesse narrow rectangular scarf, with a few elements I haven’t seen before. I call it Bruges because the bobbin motifs are so precise, and have a heavy thread gimp.  Note the needlelace medallion on top of a halfstitch oval, very effective.  I don’t know how they made the picoted bar ground in the center inserts, I suppose bobbin made.  The quality of the bobbinlace is excellent.  The overall condition looks very good, seller only  notes a few small marks and stains.
