Ebay Alerts! Twenty-one items – April 15, 2012

http://tinyurl.com/74vb8k9 Vintage Ladies Wedding Hand Embroidered Brussels Lace Hankie
Size: ~12″ square
Starting Price: $19.99
Auction ends: Apr 16, 2012 10:17:46 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller judyshoper, Fontana CA, United States
Comments: A Brussels Duchesse handkerchief with some very strange corner needlelace medallions, hard to tell if they are original. But the filling work in them is quite nice. The needlelace strapwork is also a bit odd, but I guess it fits together. The lace has good small motifs, nicely worked. I like the extension of the bobbinlace into the handkerchief cloth – I don’t see any embroidery.  A few broken brides, nothing serious.

   Sold for $64.00, 3 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/7z4eln3 Beautiful French ANTIQUE LACE EDGING 69″ by 2″ Handmade
Size: 2″ x 37″ + 32″  (two pieces)
Starting Price: $28.90
Auction ends: Apr 17, 2012 11:39:45 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller ryphat, Paris, France
Comments: Looks like a Lille piece to me, although I don’t see any of the little square tally esprits that you often find in this lace. And the lower edge is very straight. One excellent reference for looking at the various types of point ground laces is Emil Hannover’s Tønderske Kniplinger. Don’t be put off by the name, he does an excellent job of presenting many different varieties of point ground lace. If you can find a copy. The condition on this one is a bit rough, looks a little worse for wear after having served time as an edging to some kind of linen. It is in two pieces.

   Sold for $28.90, 1 bidder.

http://tinyurl.com/7opwvpa HUGE French ANTIQUE FRIVOLITE LACE COLLAR
Size: 14.25″ neck edge, 43.5″ outer edge, 8.25″ wide
Starting Price: $18.50
Auction ends: Apr 17, 2012 11:44:23 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller ryphat, Paris, France
Comments: A tatted collar, with motifs all tied together.  I love this kind of lace, it has a freedom that is quite unique. I don’t mind the knots at all. Modern tatters have abandoned this approach, but I think they should take another look. Condition looks very good, I don’t see any major problems. I do wonder if it was finished on the ends, they look a little abrupt.

      Sold for $18.50, 1 bidder.

http://tinyurl.com/7d4g3fx GORGEOUS French ANTIQUE LACE 67″ by 5 1/4″ -APPLICATION ON TULLE
Size: 5.25″ x 67″
Starting Price: $24.50
Auction ends: Apr 17, 2012 11:48:20 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller ryphat, Paris, France
Comments: A Brussels bobbinlace application on machine net border.  Middle market, but quite nicely done – note the grid of needlelace rings in some of the border motifs.  The bobbinlace looks well done, and the condition appears exceptional. Let’s hope the rest of the machine net is as good as shown in the photos. Wish there were more.

   Sold for $26.00, 2 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/7z792ye RARE French ANTIQUE LACE EDGING 75″ by 2 1/4″ Handmade
Size: 2.25″ x 75″
Starting Price: $39.00
Auction ends: Apr 17, 2012 11:52:27 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller ryphat, Paris, France
Comments: A narrow Mechlin edging, probably early 19th c. I think someone has added a machine picot edge – this was often done to ‘modernize’ older laces. I don’t know the condition of the real edge. It’s a light design with lots of sprigs in the ground and a series of flowers along the border, meant to be ruffled. Some holes in the ground, a few spots, but fairly good condition.

   Sold for $39.00, 1 bidder.

http://tinyurl.com/7dqvse3 Antique handmade Brussel lace / from cotton made in Belgium
Size: 12 cm x 300 cm
Starting Price: $54.99
Auction ends: Apr 18, 2012 01:58:27 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller mylittleboyke, Borgloon, Belgium
Comments: An Alençon border of reasonable width and great length. Condition looks very good, with just a few pulls in the reseau that I can see from the photos. I think I might see a few small repairs in some of the leaves. This is a later 19th c piece, note the very open toilé, which probably made the work go faster. Note the horsehair supports for the picots in the motifs.

   Sold for $96.00, 5 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/89qbzku Antique handmade Brussel lace / from cotton made in Belgium
Size: 14 cm x 165+155 cm
Starting Price: $74.99
Auction ends: Apr 18, 2012 02:05:23 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller mylittleboyke, Borgloon, Belgium
Comments: Two Point de Gaze pieces, I assume from the same length. Flat pattern, nice design of fairly naturalistic foliage. Photos show some stains, but no damage that I can see. Ebay’s new magnification capability is great for a piece like this.

   Sold for $350.00, 6 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/7r5wb44 Antique Lace making barrel/cushion/pillow with lace card and bobbins
Size: ~9″ square
Starting Price: 49.99 GBP
Auction ends: Apr 18, 2012 08:40:53 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller mamageorgie04, VILA DO BISPO, ALGARVE, Portugal
Comments: The seller is from Portugal, and so are the bobbins, so I’ll assume this is some kind of Portuguese mundillo. I’ve never seen one like it before. Wish the photo were turned around so one could see how the ratchet works.  Nice little cushion on the side, I assume for pins.  Looks in very good condition – something about treating for worm, but that’s not something we worry too much about in the US, so don’t know what to say there.

   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/6tya336 Original Vintage Poster Cheret Dentelliere Lace Maker
Size: 34″ x 48-3/8″
Starting Price: $2,500 Buy-it-Now or Make Offer
Auction ends: 2 days 15 hours from 4/15/12, 8:23 PM MST
Offered by: Ebay seller postersplease, New York, NY, United States
Comments: Posters usually advertise something, but this one doesn’t, so not sure of the original purpose. Artist is Jules Chéret (May 31, 1836 – September 23, 1932), apparently sometimes called the father of modern poster art – he’s got a Wikipedia article. It was printed in 1900, and seller rates it B+ (seems to be a whole rating system for poster art), meaning slight tears at folds and paper edges. Laid on linen for conservation. She’s not paying much attention to her lace, the bobbins are flying all over the place.  Really nice colors.

   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/6tnxprc Brussels Point de Gaze Lace 19thc Hand Made 13 Roses
Size: 5″ x 87″
Starting Price: $55.00 with reserve
Auction ends: Apr 18, 2012 10:49:14 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller ncm206, America The Beautiful, United States
Comments: A good size Point de Gaze border with raised petal roses.  Rather crowded design.  the white lace is pretty stark against that vibrant red ground, makes it a bit hard to see details. There are a number of small holes in the net, hard to repair.

$77.01, 3 bidders, reserve not met.

http://tinyurl.com/7ruqjwd ANCIENNE DENTELL DUCHESSE DE BRUXELLES A L’AIGUILLE POINT DE ROSE
Size: 8 cm x 1.9 m
Starting Price: 30.00 EUR
Auction ends: Apr 18, 2012 11:37:12 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller fanny5656, bretagne, France
Comments: A Point de Gaze border, higher end quality.  No raised work, and the jour fillings are beautifully done. the clothwork is quite tight, with looped picots at the bottom edge. As with the previous piece, there are some small holes in the ground, otherwise good condition.

Sold for 66.00 EUR, 4 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/8x63dl7 lace edging Brussels bobbin lace on net 92″ long x 31/2″ wide
Size: 3-1/2″ x 92″
Starting Price: $24.99
Auction ends: Apr 18, 2012 14:15:47 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller calicogre, Ottawa, ON, Canada
Comments: A Brussels bobbinlace application on machine net, good standard quality. Note the small rings in the ground. They might have done a bit better job of trimming back the net from the lower edge to open up the bobbinlace spaces, but I guess it was part of the design. Seller cites a small hole and some browning, but overall very good condition, especially the net.

   Sold for $51.00, 4 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/6q6ye32 SUPERB LG HandMade Antique Vtg BRUSSELS POINT DE GAZE LACE BERTHA COLLAR
Size: ~39.5″ neckline, ~88″ outside edge, ~5.25″ width
Starting Price: $49.99
Auction ends: Apr 18, 2012 18:03:18 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller adtjmd, RED VELVET BENCH, United States
Comments: A Brussels Duchesse bertha, bobbinlace motifs combined with Point de Gaze inserts (no raised work)  I think there might be a modification at one end, the two ends don’t match. The bobbinlace motifs are fairly large, and I like the ‘trefoil’ neck edge treatment. Condition looks very good, seller cites a rare bride break, and maybe some pinholes in the needlelace mesh? Not clear.

   Sold for $152.50, 6 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/74pzkuz SUPERB LG HandMade Antique Vtg EDWARDIAN IRISH CROCHET LACE HIGH NECK COLLAR
Size: 19″ X 20″, neckline 14″
Starting Price: $29.99
Auction ends: Apr 18, 2012 18:04:52PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller adtjmd, RED VELVET BENCH, United States
Comments: An Irish Crochet dress front with attached matching collar. Square picoted mesh, tightly worked motifs going the extra mile on raised work in the central daisy and roses. This is a really bold work, and I’m wondering how well it compliments the lady who wore it.  If it was worn at all, condition appears excellent.

   Sold for $273.68, 11 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/7ht37l6 VICTORIAN MALTESE CREAM SILK LACE COLLAR
Size: 23″ max width, 22.5″ max depth
Starting Price: 48.99 GBP
Auction ends: Apr 19, 2012 02:34:39 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller kimsucadi, Wokingham, Berkshire, United Kingdom
Comments: An Maltese  collar, fairly common pattern well worked.  Good dense tally leaf ground, and the Maltese crosses also include some leaf fillings.  Overall very good condition, I don’t see any problems from the photos.

   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/85echoa Antique Brussels bobbin lace flounce late 1800’s
Size: 49″ gathered edge, 77″ bottom, 4.75″ wide
Starting Price: 48.99 GBP
Auction ends: Apr 19, 2012 08:11:42 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller discover4, London, United Kingdom
Comments: I’d say this is a 19th century Point de Flandre piece, probably a flounce made into a bertha collar. The motifs are strong, often with overlapping tapes, simple 5-pointed fond chant fillings.  Irregular picoted brides with a few spider-like intersections, might pint to Bruges.  Seller cites a few pulls and 1 joint, overall very good condition.

   Sold for $43.99, 2 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/7tf2hvl Antique Honiton bobbin lace lovely bodice insert
Size: 15″ neckline, center front length 14″ excluding 1″ neck frill
Starting Price: 29.99 GBP
Auction ends: Apr 19, 2012 08:42:33 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller discover4, London, United Kingdom
Comments: Interesting Honiton dress front, with what appears to be an original mount. Great piece for costume study.  Snails/slugs design, all in very good condition.  I don’t understand the neckpiece, it’s not Honiton, but works nicely.

   Sold for 29.99, 1 bidder.

Size: 1-3/4″ x 65″
Starting Price: $54.00
Auction ends: Apr 19, 2012 11:11:06 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller ryphat, Paris, France
Comments: A mid 18th century Mechlin border.  Filling aren’t too ambitious, but overall it has a nice standard meandering design, well worked.  Condition looks very good for a piece of this age, although there are only a few photos.

   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/7m2khyl Exquisite 19th Century Hand Made Honiton English Bobbin Lace Handkerchief
Size: 13 square
Starting Price: $23.50
Auction ends: Apr 19, 2012 12:13:31 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller kasiakossak, Ayrshire, United Kingdom
Comments: A Honiton handkerchief with the big feathery design that you see in some of the best quality pieces.  All motifs are beautifully worked into a pleasing, effective design. I love the multiple picots on the brides. Condition appears very good, trivial defects.

   Sold for $213.00, 8 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/8yovegs Antique handmade laped Valencienne lace from white cotton for dolls/France
Size: 3.5 cm x 85 cm
Starting Price: $24.99
Auction ends: Apr 20, 2012 07:46:04 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller mylittleboyke, Borgloon, Belgium
Comments: You see lots of Valenciennes borders, even very wide ones, but relatively few shaped pieces. This lappet tie is nicely done, square ground, but not too ambitious a pattern.  It looks in very good condition.

   Sold for $24.99, 1 bidder.

http://tinyurl.com/859k4eu EXTENSIVE YARDAGE, VICTORIAN HANDMADE LACE, POINT DE GAZE, GREAT PATTERNS
Size: 5.5″ X 157″
Starting Price: $695.00
Auction ends: Apr 20, 2012 13:56:36 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller madhouserags, Concord, NH 03301, United States
Comments: A very nice piece to end with today.  Brussels Duchesse, in a non-standard, beautiful design.  Note how the Point de Gaze roses (with pointed raised petals) sneak into the design.  The scrolls and lower leaves have so much movement that I’d hate to ruffle this piece for fear of hiding the flow.  Good raised work on the bobbinlace. Very minimal condition problems. Definitely an upscale market piece.

   No bids.
