Comments: I think this has a droschel ground, but in an irregular pattern. The motifs are a little large, and there’s a supplementary square mesh bride filling, making a nice openwork contrast.  I would put this maybe 2nd quarter 18th century – maybe an English piece? If you have Toomer’s “Antique Lace, Identifying Types and Technique”, take a look at plate 86, it has a similar feel. Although maybe not as strong on spiraling leaf terminations as I would like for an early Devon piece. It’s a bit worse for wear from all these years, some small holes in the ground, and I think think there are lots of areas of repair to the net.  An interesting piece.

Comments: An Irish Crochet fallcap. The pattern is a bit ambiguous, and there aren’t any single motifs, just a kind of guipure ground that you sometimes see is early works. The slits in the cap do seem deliberate, for some kind of fastening. Seller suggests some ribbons. An interesting piece – wish there were more photos. Looks in good condition, maybe a few small holes. Very white from the photos, might indicate wash/bleach.

Comments: A big, exuberant Brussels Application on machine net. It combines both needle and bobbin motifs, quite delicately done. This is a difficult lace to carry off on such a dense pattern, and it succeeds beautifully. I especially like the extra lengths gone to for the center cloth transition to the lace. One tiny hole and a little fraying along the edge, overall very good condition.

Comments: Two cuffs and matching neckpiece of Irish crochet, in good condition other than 2 or 3 small holes.  The motifs is a trefoil spray of a simple flower with heavy raised rings.  I think the ground picots are clones knots, a bit loosely done. This simple but effective pattern helps speed up the work, and is a motif found many time in Irish Crochet. Wish we could track down the manufacturer – it is so distinctive.

In “The Lacemakers” by Susannah Meredith (1865) there is a great quote from an Irish lacemaker:

Comments: Round hole mid 18th c Valenciennes is one of my favorites, and this is an interesting set of lappets.  The motifs don’t have quite the definitive line-drawing effect that you often find in this lace, maybe a bit clumsy design. But normally people are surprised at how light and delicate a lace like this is. I’m a bit concerned at the length, 20″ isn’t very long for a set like this, and you can see some cutting at the tops.  The condition of this set is as good as you will find, with just one small hole.

Comments: The Proctor Teneriffe Lace Wheels were invented and distributed by Augusta Proctor of Viroqua, Wisconsin in the first decade of the 1900’s (patented 1903). It came in a round and square version. They are one of the simplest and most elegant of all the Sol lace looms. The black ones are made in gutta-percha, an inelastic natural latex product from the Southeast Asias Palaquium tree sap.  Round looms are more common, and it is rare to find the box in good condition.  Normally the loom is attached to a heavy small pillow with pins to provide a working base.

Comments: A fairly wild Irish Crochet cape collar, with large motifs, lots of raised work.  Looped picots on the bride ground.  It’s an impressive piece, but I think the motifs are a bit too large, the design not all that well put together, and the technique a little loose.  I think it’s the fault of the kind of thread they used, a bit coarse. Condition looks very good, occasional broken bride.

Comments: A Maltese mantilla, very nice guipure work on a square mesh leaf ground. The outer edge alternates Maltese crosses and rosettes of leaves. I’m not wild about the design of the center headpiece, it doesn’t seem quite up to the standard of the outer elements.  But it’s an unusual form, well done. A few broken threads and reattachments needed, but overall very good condition.
