Comments: An interest Youghal handkerchief. The design is a bit more naturalistic than you sometimes see – not so much emphasis on ornamentation. The clothwork is great and delineates the veins in the leaves. Some nice diamonds in the flowers, with simple fillings. It has a rather Art Nouveau feel. Note how the leaves extend into the linen in the corners. There are some holes in the mesh and brides at the top, not particularly serious.

Comments: First of all, let’s note that aside from a few faint stains and minor breaks, this piece is in very good condition.  Second, it’s point ground, cotton, using blonde techniques with extensive honeycomb fillings – beautiful technique.  It is possible it’s a Chantilly piece, during WWI silk was hard to come by and they often used cotton. When I come across a piece like this I usually ascribe it to Bayeau, although much research needs to be done to pin this down exactly.

Comments: When Point de Gaze butterflies are swarming, the price goes down. When you haven’t seen one for a while, like here, prices goes up. The survival of the tag is unusual, Aux Trois Quartiers, Paris, and it says it comes from Belgium. These were basically early 20th c tourist items. This one is a little plain, double wings with a little raised work, and shading using ground and cloth stitch. Condition a little wrinkled but basically good – I don’t see any holes or pinpricks.

Comments: This seems to be bertha week.  One note on the photography, some of the manufacturers of these pieces photograph them just like in the photo but with the ends trailing downward a bit (like the ends of a jabot).  This is Duchesse de Bruxelles, with flat needlelace inserts, and good raised work on the bobbinlace.  It works with rather standard motifs a bit thrown together but with a pleasing flower-garden effect. The condition is excellent, which is unusual.

Comments: This is an often seen but little understood lace. Belgian, pieced, with a needlemade mesh, it was sometimes called Point de Milan by the original manufacturers. It’s a Belgian later 19th century attempt to imitate Italian tape laces with some decorative elements in the tapes. It can be good (as in this piece), or quite coarse, which hasn’t done much for its reputation. The condition looks very good, maybe a small stain or two from the photos.

No raised work, but that’s not a problem – some of the best examples are perfectly flat.  Not much in the way of really fancy fillings, but everything is done to enhance the concept.  Note the widely spaced spiked picots along the edge – a sign of a particular manufacturer, but I don’t know who.  There are a few holes, one major, the rest fairly minor.  Overall good condition, and this is one of the best examples to come along in a long time.

Comments: An interesting little jacket of Point de Venise, probably Belgian.  The wide spacing on the cordonnet buttonholing is usually the giveaway. Fillings are basically clusters of 3 twisted buttonholes, and there’s a picoted bride ground. No shaping to the raised cordonnet.  It’s not the greatest 19th-20th c Point de Venise I’ve ever seen, but it is well designed for the purpose and I like the overall effect.  A little frayed in places, and something seems to be missing along the bottom.

Comments: These little metal looms are for Teneriffe lace and are fascinatingly complex. Having tried a few, they don’t work quite as well as they might, but who cares. They were often marketed through the Grands Magasins du Louvre.  These don’t seem to have any rust, which is important. Original backing with one, unusual.Their use is described in “La Dentelle de Ténériffe by Cousine Claire, who shows 15 different sizes for these looms.

Comments: A Maltese or Gozian deep collar. Note the extensive guipure motifs along with the plaited five-hole ground and sparing use of leaves. One end is not finished with the lighter edging. I’m wondering if the ends have been cut, the motifs aren’t complete. Hard to tell without closeups, and Maltese does sometimes terminate like this. But overall it’s an innovative design. Except for the ends, condition appears very good.

Comments: An English windmill bobbinwinder, unfortunately the windmill vanes are missing. The bobbin is wedged into the cupped end of the spindle, which is turned by a band passing around the drive wheel and also around the smaller wheel inset into the upright post. The drive wheel is open, with 4 spokes, and there is some turning on the uprights. All in all a nice piece, unfortunate about the vanes. The drawer seems to work well. Seller notes some old worm damage, otherwise very good condition.

Comments: Has a provenance stating it was made for Victoria Mary, Duchess of York in 1893. That would be Mary of Teck, the future Queen Mary (1867-1953). Hard to say how solid that is. The lace is Honiton, and it does match the pattern in the accompanying illustration. There are no initials in the center cloth – it may be a replacement. The cloth doesn’t seem to be as fine as in the illustration. An interesting piece, although the quality doesn’t seem to be the very highest, a little snails/slugs in places. But probably appropriate for the period. Condition looks good, maybe a little on the bleached side, but OK.

Comments: I’d be comfortable with saying this is a Burano copy of Gros Point, quite well done.  I like the solid clothwork, which has a really authentic feel. I’m not so wild about the more open fillings – tighter work would have gone over better. The brides are well done and don’t detract from the motifs. These later copies don’t often get the raised cordonnet quite right – it looks a little too even when it should be more sculpted.  Still, this piece is very true to a great tradition. Condition appears very good.
