Lace of the Month – Punto Antico Aquilano – February 2012

This remarkable point ground lace is an alb flounce, and comes with two matching cuffs. They might also be used to decorated a dress. We recently mounted the set on a linen alb to get an overall impression, although the alb itself is probably a bit too long.  It is a point ground continuous lace, about 10″ wide. The thread is linen, a bit coarse and stiff, but the work is excellent. Note the lack of a gimp, the well-done fillings, and raised veins from sewings within the motifs.  Point ground laces in the Aquila region generally fall under the name ‘Punto Antico Aquilano’ as discussed literature such as Rita Fattore and Vita Maria Aprile’s “Il Tombolo Aquilano”, 2008. This is not a readily identifiable lace, and I think there are many mistaken attributions. It is a worthy topic of research. But the Italian provenance of this particular set is undisputed.

The set was purchased from the collection of Princess Maria Gabriella De Savoia (b. 1940), daughter of King Umberto II of Italy (1904-1983). The flounce is illustrated in an obscure article, “Trine e Merletti d’Abruzzo” by Giuseppe Imbastaro in a publication called ‘Touring Club Italiano” dated 1914.  The article shows the flounce still on the pillow, labeled “Pizzo Aquilano”. It says that the work was done as a gift for the Queen Mother of Italy, who at that time would have been Margherita of Savoy (1851-1926), the great-grandmother of Princess Maria Gabriella. The photo is also shown in the Fattore/Aprile book.

Queen Margherita was a famous patron of lacemakers and lacemaking schools. Part of her legendary lace collection was lent for exhibition at the Chicago World’s Fair of 1893, mediated by the American expatriate and Italian lace promoter Countess Cora Slocumb di Brazza Savorgnan.  The 1981 book “The Fair Women: The Story of the Woman’s Building, World’s Colombian Exposition, Chicago 1893” by Jeanne Madeline Weimann contains an account of that loan, how it was shipped under armed guard, each piece in elaborately sealed packages.* Some panic ensued when it was discovered that there were fewer pieces than expected – it seems that the Queen had removed some of her favorites before shipping, and the manifest was never changed.  Another panic was caused by a few mice spotted near the display case.  We don’t have an exact date on the Aquilano piece, so it is difficult to say if it was shown in Chicago.

*They were shipped on a German steamer; since they were irreplaceable, a $100,000 bond had been secured against their safe return. From a safety deposit vault they were brought to the Woman’s Building in a splendid coach drawn by gold-harnessed horses. The coachmen wore full royal livery. Nineteen guards brought the cases into the Building, where it took a week to unpack them. The wooden boxes were covered with zinc, wrapped in canvas, and sealed with 250 royal seals.
“The Fair Women”

Interesting contrast to how I threw most of my collection in the back of several cars and trucks when we were evacuated during the Las Conchas forest fire which was running wild in New Mexico near where I live. I wasn’t even sure where some of the drivers were going. But I did get it all back, in excellent condition. – lsw

Ebay Alerts! Seven items – February 16, 2012

Apologies, Ebay alerts are a bit late and a bit abbreviated today. See next post.

http://tinyurl.com/7ea9atd *** 219 cm dentelle ancienne au fuseau *** coton noir largeur 30 cm
Size: 30 cm x 210 cm
Starting Price: 10.00 EUR
Auction ends: Feb 18, 2012 05:38:48 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller isabond007, villemomble, Île-de-France, France
Comments: There’s only one small photo of this piece, and it’s hard to say if it is handmade. But the general feel is correct for a varied-ground Le Puy guipure. the ‘spiderweb’ roundels are unusual.  Condition looks good, but again, not many photos.

   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/7tr8mxv Brussels lace bertha collar with bobbin and point de gaze lace c1800
Size: 15cm deep, 100cm neck edge, 180cm outer edge
Starting Price: 145.00 GBP
Auction ends: Feb 19, 2012 02:48:51 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller lunnantiques, London, London, United Kingdom
Comments: A Brussels Duchesse bertha that looks to be in very good condition. A bit outside the norm, with simple non-raised flowers in the Point de Gaze inserts, and extensive ring fillings in the oval cartouches.  I find the design a little rigid. It is well made and interesting, but I’m not so sure how well it works as a bertha.

   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/7zjavv8 100cm Valencienne c1750
Size: 6.5 cm x 100 cm
Starting Price: 69.00 GBP
Auction ends: Feb 19, 2012 03:07:09 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller lunnantiques, London, London, United Kingdom
Comments: The seller has several other lengths of this lace posted, see also 350534421875 and 350534424952. The design has a kind of 5-hole ground, not unknown in Valencienne experimentation. The motifs are quite loosely worked, and the design a little primitive. I’m wondering just how true to early Valenciennes this is, and if perhaps it coud be something else. Condition is very good.

   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/7gkeg8b Antique Victorian Cream Brussels Guipere Rosaline Duchesse Lace Trim c.2m x 0.06
Size: 6 cm x 1.98 cm
Starting Price: 5.00 GBP
Auction ends: Feb 19, 2012 05:50:13 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller sandyfhbeating, TONBRIDGE, Kent, United Kingdom
Comments: A Rosaline (n perls), narrow border. It’s a little unusual to find this lace in border form, more often it is made in specialized pieces. This one has a good dense design with some ropey raised work. Seller cites a few stains, otherwise very good condition.

Sold for 24.00 GBP, 5 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/6vx5dkh Eclairage Ancien Dentelle aux Fuseau Lampe à Pétrole Doulhi Art Populaire XIXe
Size: glass – 17cm x ~8 cm diameter.  lamp -11cm x ~8 cm diameter
Starting Price: 24.00 GBP
Auction ends: Feb 19, 2012 11:32:56 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller barrioux, SERMENTIZON, Auvergne, France
Comments: A French lacemaker’s lamp set, consisting of a glass magnifier (sometimes called a ‘doulhi’, with a case made out of a pricked bobbinlace pattern – note the silver medal attached.. Occasionally you see these two together, but it is very rare to have the accompanying oil lamp.  Overall good condition, although I’m not sure if that tilt in the wick area of the lamp is damage or not.

Sold for 252.50 EUR, 9 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/7ge2pza Antique Edwardian Irish 3D Crochet Collar “Gros Point de Venise” flowers Leaves
Size: ~4″ wide, 18″ neckline
Starting Price: $24.99
Auction ends: Feb 19, 2012 12:45:09 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller abridav216, Beachwood, Ohio, United States
Comments: An Irish Crochet collar with big, gold motifs, good raised work.  The work itselv isn’t quite as tight as you sometimes fine, so I wonder if it’s a bit later in date. Overall good condition.

   Sold for $33.00, 2 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/6qaggtl SUPERB LONG LENGTH OF ANTIQUE CREAM BRUSSELS POINT DE GAZE LACE ca. 1870

Starting Price: $200.00 with reserve
Auction ends: Feb 23, 2012 10:24:07 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller palexpo, Steinhausen, Switzerland
Comments: A lushly designed high quality Point de Gaze border, in an excellent length. No raised work, but that’s good, it allows the design to be more naturalistic, and to exploit a good variety of decorative fillings. Condition looks very good, I can’t see any problems from the photos. Someone, please save this piece from the wedding dress designers.

http://tinyurl.com/7qp44z8 ANTIQUE LACE-FINE ROSALINE LACE CUFFS
Size: ~8″ x 4.25″
Starting Price: $45.00
Auction ends: Feb 13, 2012 08:10:52 PST
Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: Cuffs of Belgian Rosaline Perlé. Not enough closeups to see if the perles are bobbin or needlelace – I’m guessing needlelace. The design on these relies entirely on the motifs without any brides.  Condition is very good, I don’t see any problems from the photos.

   Sold for $45.00, 1 bidder.

http://tinyurl.com/7jk33eq ANTIQUE LACE-EXQUISITE BRUSSELS POINT DE GAZE COLLAR
Size: ~12.5″ x 8″
Starting Price: $395.00
Auction ends: Feb 13, 2012 08:46:14 PST
Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: Dress front with standing collar – looks made all in one piece.  Good Point de Gaze with conventional Rose design, nicely executed and in very good (exceptional) condition. Raised petals on the roses, and some good use of decorative fillings.

   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/7btgk9x Bobbin lace bottom of a priest vestment- circular with different figures.
Size: 5.5″ x 104″, joined
Starting Price: $39.99
Auction ends: Feb 13, 2012 12:31:06 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller calicogre, Ottawa, ON, Canada
Comments: Religious lace is a specialized area, one that doesn’t often appeal to everyone. The iconography in this one is varied and interesting, although the lace itself is a little primitive. The figures remind me of similar Italian work, but not exactly. Let me suggest something – Canada does have a tradition of bobbinlace made in convents – apologies no time to look up the reference, perhaps a reader can help. Could this be a local product?  A little damage in one motif, nothing serious.

   Sold for $46.00, 3 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/6r222ps 300cm long piece of Flemish Brabant bobbin lace c1780
Size: ~16 cm x 300 cm
Starting Price: $39.99
Auction ends: Feb 14, 2012 03:06:40 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller lunnantiques, London, London, United Kingdom
Comments: A good, long length of ‘Brabant’ lace, a bit narrower than one might expect. Actually it’s quite a nice piece. The term Brabant basically places a lace outside of the major manufacturing cities like Brussels and Ghent, although there isn’t any particularly good reason for doing so. And the Brabant geographic region was larger than it is now back in the mid 17th century when this was made. It’s a bit of a derisive term, and sometimes people try to pass it off as English, again without really good reason. This design of this piece is a bit haphazard, and the work itself a little loose – all characteristics of this lace.  It also doesn’t have any mesh ground, which is more on the Brussels side, and might point to a slightly earlier date. The piece is a kind of halfway between the really good Brussels products and the ‘Brabant’ style. Condition looks very good from what I can see.

   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/7gbcrlu Silk Maltese lace collar with matching cuffs c1920
Size: Collar – 5″ deep, 17″ neck edge, 46″ outer edge. Cuffs – 4″ x 9″
Starting Price: 42.00 Buy-it-Now
Auction ends: Feb 14, 2012 05:47:21 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller lunnantiques, London, London, United Kingdom
Comments: The collar and cuffs look like they might go together, although the work in the leaves is denser in the collar than the cuffs. Still they make a good set. Condition looks very good from the photos.

   Did note sell.

http://tinyurl.com/7q5dtyb Antique Honiton bobbin lace ‘a reseau handmade lovely collar
Size: 18″ around inside edge, 5″ at widest points.
Starting Price: 34.99 GBP
Auction ends: Feb 14, 2012 07:14:50 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller discover4,London, United Kingdom
Comments: This is a strange piece. I can’t say it isn’t Honiton, and I wish I had a closer look at the mesh. The motifs are definitely atypical, but the Honiton tally fillings do seem to be there. Condition appears quite good, seller cites some minor pulls.

Sold for 97.68 GBP, 7 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/7qo2ujg 200cm longpiece of Mechlin lace c1820
Size: 8cm x 200cm
Starting Price: 58.00 GBP
Auction ends: Feb 14, 2012 09:16:41 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller lunnantiques, London, London, United Kingdom
Comments: A good length of early 18th century Mechlin, fine work with nice crosses in the ground. It almost has the look of Beveran.  A few minor frayed spots along the lower edge in the photos, but otherwise very good condition. Very similar to #350531487874, but that one is joined together from several pieces.

Sold for 58.00 GBP, 1 bidder.

Starting Price: 19.99 GBP
Auction ends: Feb 14, 2012 11:50:30 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller avfcclaretlions, Worcestrer, Worcestershire, United Kingdom
Comments: An interesting Honiton border with picoted bride ground.  Note the closely worked, well done butterfly and leaves. It is snails/slugs design, but nicely done. Condition looks very good.

Sold for 32.03 GBP, 5 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/6rdpgne ANTIQUE HAND FLEMISH LACE LG COLLAR

Starting Price: $24.99
Auction ends: Feb 14, 2012 12:25:02 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller heartnsoul1, Hollis, New Hampshire, United States
Comments: Definitely a piece for the middle market. Tread looks like linen, and it has a great bold design. The needlelace fillings in the bobbin tape motifs are surprisingly elaborate.  I’m out to sea on this one, maybe French? Or even Irish?  It just doesn’t have a Belgian feel. Note the long picots on the brides. Some yellowing, but overall very good condition.

4 bidders, $61.00, reserve not met.

http://tinyurl.com/76ssn7p EARLY LOVELY FINE FRENCH WHITEWORK & LACE COLLAR
Size: not given
Starting Price: $24.99 with reserve
Auction ends: Feb 14, 2012 12:25:08 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller heartnsoul1, Hollis, New Hampshire, United States
Comments: I put this one up because of the outer point ground fringe of lace – it looks like the Regency Point that I wrote about as Lace of the Month back in March 2012, although it doesn’t have the inside gimp. Could very well be a Lille piece. The inner edge also looks a bit like Bucks – photos aren’t very close, but I’d say that’s a point ground, not Mechlin mesh. I’d call it a draw between France and England, probably leaning toward France.  Condition looks very good for a costume piece.

3 bidders, $52.00, reserve not met.

http://tinyurl.com/7kbfp95 RARE 18TH C HAND MADE POINT D’ANGLETERRE RICH SHADED FLORAL LACE EDGING

Starting Price: $9.99 with reserve
Auction ends: Feb 14, 2012 16:51:34 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller jamiexmas*, Southbridge, Massachusetts, United States
Comments: A mid 18th century pieced lace with droschel ground – hard call between Belgium and England. There might be a clue in the raised work that extends so far into the design to delineate sections of the leaves; some people say this is an English trait.. Good fillings, but the overall design is a bit plain. Very good condition.

Sold for $140.00, 3 bidders.

Auction ends: Feb 14, 2012 18:53:29 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller jamiexmas*, Southbridge, Massachusetts, United States
Comments: A point de gaze dress front in very good condition. Raised petal roses, with a nicely symmetric design. The motifs are quite sharp and well preserved.

Sold for $73.00, 3 bidders.

Auction ends: Feb 15, 2012 10:27:34 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller heartnsoul1, Hollis, New Hampshire, United States
Comments: A Mechlin insertion, I’d say later 19th c.  The design is simple and quite loosely worked. Note the half stitch shading which you see in later laces.  Condition appears very good.

   Sold for $175.00, 2 bidders.

Auction ends: Feb 15, 2012 10:37:34 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller heartnsoul1, Hollis, New Hampshire, United States
Comments: Brussels application on machine net, bobbin motifs with an elaborate floral design.  Note the extensive needlelace ring fillings, sometimes used in a grid. No esprit work in the upper mesh. The whole design is a bit different from what you usually see, quite effective.  Some unfortunate holes in the net, but not too serious.

Offered by: Ebay seller heartnsoul1, Hollis, New Hampshire, United States
Comments: A good length of a narrow Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net. The motifs are delicately made, with round esprits in the net. No needlelace that I can see. Condition seem very good, I don’t see any problems. That’s unusual for a piece like this.

Offered by: Ebay seller heartnsoul1, Hollis, New Hampshire, United States
Comments: A narrow Chantilly scarf in very good condition – seller cites a few minor pulls. It is of a very light workmanship. Not quite as over the top as some I’ve seen, but a good example.

Offered by: Ebay seller heartnsoul1, Hollis, New Hampshire, United States
Comments: This piece is in far too good condition to be very early, I’m guessing 20th century. The woven triangles were not used in early Italian laces. It does have very interesting needlelace figural motifs. Could be an Aemelia Ars piece, or even perhaps Ruskin lace? Condition looks excellent.

Comments: A very long Valenciennes border in very good condition. The design is a little predictable, and the work isn’t terribly ambitious. But what do you expect in making this same pattern day in and day out for, oh, probably 6 months? This is a lace which mainly trimmed linens and nightwear.  The length is extraordinary.

Comments: Very well done work – instantly recognizable as top quality from the very large Clones knots and tight motifs. The design of this lace can be terrible, but the work is always excellent. This one is a very good border to a now missing center. Not in particular the well designed corners. Condition looks very good.

The stock collection of A. Blackborne and Company, a lace dealership operating in London in the second half of the 19th Century was given to the Bowes Museum in 2006. Playing on the recent surge of interest in lace by modern fashion designers, the museum is presenting an innovative take on an old subject. The 98 Lace Group (http://tinyurl.com/7kvsfov) has taken as inspiration seven historic lappets in the Blackborn collection and offers modern interpretations of this venerable but now neglected form. This group, which was formed in 1998, aims to promote modern lace through exhibitions and a yearly residental weekend.  Events connected with the current exhibition include:

Friday February 17 – Children’s workshop
Sunday March 11 – Afternoon workshop: A plaited lace bracelet with Ann Allison
Tuesday March 13 – Beth Walsh, “Historic Lace in Contemporary Design”
Wednesday March 14 – Day workshop, “Cloth of Stitch – Needlelace techniques with Beth Walsh”
Wednesdays 2:00PM – 3:00 pm – Lace aftes Lunch. Join other lacemakers at the Café with your pillow on all Wednesdays during the exhibition.

From the website:
“The Blackborne Lace Collection is now being catalogued and stored in Fashion & Textile Gallery’s innovative Glass Cube research and study area, making it the place to go for young designers and enthusiasts who want to learn more about the extraordinary evolution of lace. ”
