These four events are designed to provide new artistic inspiration from Bedford’s long history of bobbinlace. Two modern artists will create works involving public participation in their design and execution.
Bedford-based visual artist Arabel Rosillo de Blas, http://tinyurl.com/6qrsx7u, in collaboration with the Aragon Lacemakers, invites the public to share their laces and provide inspiration for a large public work at the February 25th event. On March 24th, the public is again invited to become pins and bobbins, weaving the actual large work.  The event will be filmed, and the final product will be displayed on May 5th, site as yet unknown.
Audio-visual artist Kathy Hinde, http://kathyhinde.co.uk/, will hold a workshop on April 13-14 to introduce the public to the creation of music via punched cards (I’m reminded of a Leaver’s Loom). A second workshop follows on April 27-28, where special software will be used to create compositions from lace patterns.

Ebay Alerts! Ten items – February 9, 2012

http://tinyurl.com/7zq8575 ANTIQUE IRISH CROCHET LACE COLLAR LARGE BEAUTIFUL DOLL
Size: 14″ across, 19.5″ long
Starting Price: $24.99
Auction ends: Feb 11, 2012 15:09:05 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller bigjane3835, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, United States
Comments: I put this up because of the technique – big chunky raised work motifs in the outer edge with large Clones knots. Doesn’t go too well with the Rose of Sharon cloth in the actual dress front, but I’m always interested in how Irish Crochet is used as a textile.  It’s hard to spot serious damage, but he piece is a bit worn.

   $27.00, 2 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/7p2p7cu Antique Point de Gaze Lace Brussels Belgium Bridal Fan Leaf or Collar Monogram M
Size: lace 5″ deep, 14.5″ inner curve, 30″ outer curve
Starting Price: $49.00
Auction ends: Feb 12, 2012 07:03:16 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller mellow44, Tiverton, RI, United States
Comments: A flat Point de Gaze fan leaf with the monogram M.Note the intermittent looped picots around the edge – sign of a particular manufacturer, but I don’t know who. The design is well suited for a fan, you don’t want it to be too heavy.  Excellent work, with minimal but effective use of fillings. A lot of unfortunate small holes in the net. Lace also appears to be a bit stained, although some photos show up very white.

   $244.72, 10 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/8yqh9zt ANTIQUE LACE-BOBBIN LACE COLLAR
Starting Price: $19.99
Auction ends: Feb 12, 2012 07:06:59 PST
Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: For lack of any other reason I’ll call this one Beds although it doesn’t have a latticework looped edge.  Might also be French, Miracourt region.  Note the elaborate tally ground, and the long, narrow woven leaves used as fillings. Probably leaning more toward France on this one.  There are several breaks in the ground, and something going on at the ends near the neckline.

   $19.99, 1 bidder.

http://tinyurl.com/7nzbrnv ANTIQUE LACE-CHILDS LACE COLLAR
Size: not given
Starting Price: $19.99
Auction ends: Feb 12, 2012 07:09:51 PST
Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: A small point ground collar which might be Beds, or Lille. The thread does seem a bit heavy and it shows in the ground. I’ve been staring at this a long time; it has a slight machine feel, but I think it’s OK. Condition looks quite good, maybe a little frayed at the ends.

   $19.99, 1 bidder.

http://tinyurl.com/7e9vw3c ANTIQUE LACE-MECHLIN LACE BONNET VEIL
Size: 10″ x 30″
Starting Price: $85.00
Auction ends: Feb 12, 2012 07:20:51 PST
Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: It does seem to be Mechlin, although I wish there was a real fine closeup of the ground. You see this same kind of design in Lille, and pieces can get very big. It is made in strips joined together like Droschel ground. The strips are a bit hard to spot because of the unevenness of the thread. Might be linen. A few holes in the ground, but still in good conditoin for something this large and rare. Dates earlier than ~1840.

   $220.50, 2 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/8xo98qy ANTIQUE LACE- BRUSSELS LACE HANDKERCHIEF EDGE
Size: not given
Starting Price: $45.00
Auction ends: Feb 12, 2012 07:32:02 PST
Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: Unmounted, but a good Brussels bobbinlace application on machine net. Good, fine work on the motifs, and condition issues are minor.

   $45.00, 1 bidder.

http://tinyurl.com/6s8b6nq ANTIQUE LACE-BRUSSELS LACE FLOUNCE 185″ by 12″
Size: 12″ x 185″
Starting Price: $595.00
Auction ends: Feb 12, 2012 07:44:37 PST
Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: A long, wide crinoline flounce of Brussels application on machine net with an impressive design. Motifs are bobbin-made, I don’t see any needlelace work. Note the small esprits in the upper ground, another sign of quality. Some small holes in the net and repairs mainly toward the top.  Hard to say how extensive this is since the photos don’t cover the whole thing. This piece was also reviewed in the Dec 29, 2012 Ebay Alerts.

   $635.00, 3 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/7ac9qpj ANTIQUE LACE- FINE VALENCIENNE LACE
Size: 1.5″ x 24″
Starting Price: $55.00
Auction ends: Feb 12, 2012 08:33:32 PST
Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: A narrow mid 18th c Valenciennes with great line-drawing effects. Looks like the later round-hole ground.  A little frayed especially along the header edge, but overall good condition. One of my favorite laces.

   $55.00, 1 bidder.

http://tinyurl.com/7extm22 ANTIQUE LACE-C.19THC.BURANO LACE SHAWL
Size: ~18.5″ X 106″
Starting Price: $295.00
Auction ends: Feb 12, 2012 10:27:02 PST
Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: This rectangular shawl is large and good, but unfortunately with some damage to the ground.  Hard to repair since the ground was made in one piece over an extensive area. It does go to show the ambitious scale of some of these laces.  The design is a bit conventional, but well made.

   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/7cl2ssa ANTIQUE LACE-CIRCA 1600′s, FLEMISH LACE
Size: ~1″ x 32″
Starting Price: $45.00 with reserve
Auction ends: Feb 12, 2012 11:13:13 PST
Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: There was quite an argument going on the Jan 27, 2012 Ebay Alerts over #140686771106.  I still think it’s Italian.  But this one is the real thing, early 1600’s Flemish lace. It is quite narrow and densely worked. Thins kind of lace doing in points sometimes goes by the name ‘Van Dyke’ lace.  It is a reasonable length for this period, and the condition looks very good.

   $195.00, 2 bidders.

Ebay Alerts! Thirteen items – February 5, 2012

http://tinyurl.com/7cdg45j Antique Honiton bobbin lace handmade lovely collar
Size: 40″ inside edge, 4.75″ center back
Starting Price: 29.99 GBP
Auction ends: Feb 06, 2012 07:50:54 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller discover4, London, United Kingdom
Comments: A long, narrow Honiton collar. Slugs/snails design elements with extensive tally fillings throughout. Lots of raised work in the leaves and flowers, and bobbin-made plain brides. The design is a bit scattered, but overall quite effective. Seller cites a few minor pulls, mostly very good condition.

   29.99 GBP, 1 bidder.

http://tinyurl.com/7pd2q2y ANTIQUE IRISH CROCHET LACE COLLAR
Size: 15″neckline, 4.5″ deep
Starting Price: 18.00 GBP
Auction ends: Feb 08, 2012 08:55:16 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller amberfarleigh, Willington, Co Durham, United Kingdom
Comments: Irish crochet collar with deep points.Small tightly worked motifs with raised ring center. Those might be Clones knots on the brides, not enough closeups to tell.  Whole thing looks a bit shrunken, maybe washed at some point.  Might be blocked back into shape.  Few broken brides, nothing serious.

   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/6wnwuan NAPPE DENTELLE TEXTILE TISSU DECORATION DENTELLIERE NAPPERON LE PUY EN VELAY
Size: 92 cm x 95 cm
Starting Price: 18.00
Auction ends: Feb 06, 2012 08:39:56 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller michmich43, saint prejet armandon, Auvergne, France
Comments: The photo is not good and there are no details. But looking from afar, I see Reticella rosettes, good filet insertion and cutwork embroidery squares. Probably a late 19th-early 20th c piece, much cut down. Just wish I could get a closer look at the Reticella, it looks interesting. The triangular elements in the rosettes might be Cyprus.  Condition OK, but modified.

   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/7tntebr Règle de dentelliere art populaire objet de métier
Size: 54 cm long
Starting Price: 60.00 EUR
Auction ends: Feb 07, 2012 19:36:39 Paris
Offered by: Ebay seller ngrd159, Aiguilhe, France métropolitaine
Comments: A French Provencal lacemaker’s measure, with extensive cutouts and chip carving. dated 1893. An aune or ell, was was used to measure cloth and defined as 120 cm.  So a demi-aune is 60 cm.  All the lacemaker ones I’ve seen are more like 50 cm. – there’s a mystery here that bears investigation.  This one has great carving and decoration, and looks in good condition. Buyer beware, fakes are common, but this one has a good look. Takes a real expert to say for sure.  I also show a postcard so you can get an idea of how they were used.  French seller, I’ve written to ask if they will sell outside of France.

      282.50 EUR, 9 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/7jbv7mb ANTIQUE IRISH CROCHET LACE COLLAR AND CUFFS..FAB
Size: collar – ~19″ long, 4″ wide. cuffs – 9.5″ x 3.5″ widest
Starting Price: $9.95
Auction ends: Feb 07, 2012 16:44:32 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller glitz, Brownsboro, Alabama, United States
Comments: Collars and cuffs that survive together in any kind of lace are fairly rare. These look in good condition. The design is fairly dense, a little thrown together. Los of shamrocks and rised petal roses.

   $20.50, 4 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/7dokoum ANTIQUE MALTESE SILK LACE COLLAR 19THC
Size: 14″neckline, 9″ deep at corners.
Starting Price: 35.00 GBP
Auction ends: Feb 08, 2012 08:55:16 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller amberfarleigh, Willington, Co Durham, United Kingdom
Comments: Cream-color silk Maltese frontpiece and attached neckpiece. Some nice guipure against a leaf ground in the center portion.  Looks a little the worse for wear, but basically good condition. Watch this seller in the future.

   No bids.

Feb 09, 2012 17:33:13 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller oldhouse09, ON THE SHORE OF THE BAY, United States
Comments: These are two separate offerings from the same seller. I thought I’d put them together since they are both Brussels Duchesse cuffs.  Fairly rare for cuffs to survive in this good condition, together. The designs and work are a bit conventional, but condition is very good on both sets. By the way, the $2.00 bill was re-introduced in 1976 and was reprinted several times since then. It’s worth $2.00.  Seller has a similar small collar as #160728516915.

$36.00, 8 bidders and $18.00, 5 bidders.

Starting Price: $24.99
Auction ends: Feb 09, 2012 18:03:07 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller adtjmd, RED VELVET BENCH, United States
Comments: This looks like it was intended to be all one piece. Workmanship and condition are excellent.  Look at the closeups, the picoted brides, the good tally fillings, the crisp motif work. Nice.  Snails/slugs doesn’t get any better, and I don’t mean that in a derogatory way.

   $26.00, 2 bidders.

Starting Price: $9.35
Auction ends: Feb 09, 2012 19:00:03 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller 4birdsonawire, Pacific Northwest, United States
Comments: A Bruges Bloemwerk border on the circular linen center. Quite nicely done. This is an estate piece in very good condition, other than some age spots.

   $43.01, 6 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/86a95sa SUPERB HandMade Antique Vtg VICTORIAN ERA HONITON LACE WEDDING VEIL

Starting Price: $9.95
Auction ends: Feb 09, 2012 19:02:21 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller adtjmd, RED VELVET BENCH, United States
Comments: A Honiton applique on machine net.  You tell Honiton in this form from the larger motifs and extensive fillings over larger areas.  Note the small sprigs in the ground – an effective piece.  A few small holes, not too serious, otherwise very good condition.

   $809.00, 7 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/75wey89 antique maltese silk lace shawl 1830’s
Size: 68″ x 27″
Starting Price: 49.95 GBP
Auction ends: Feb 10, 2012 11:17:37 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller janewayandmoi, Ipswich, Suffolk, United Kingdom
Comments: A mantilla shaped peice, but I don’t think this is Maltese. I will take the description as silk as given. I think it’s either a French or Russian piece – work needs to be done on identifying this genre. See http://tinyurl.com/7lsbulm for an example of similar Russian work Note the little hook-shaped motifs surrounded by leaves on the outer edge – no gimp – you see this in many similar pieces. A few stains, but overall condition is very good.

   73.00 GBP, 2 bidders.

Lace Exhibition: Draadlijnen – December 4, 2011 to January 4, 2012

Draadlijnen
Dates:
December 4, 2011 to January 4, 2012
Location: Foyer Spikkerelle
Scheldelaan 6, 8580 Avelgem, West Flanders, Belgium
Hours: Mon, Tues, Wed: 9AM-noon.  Wed: 2:00PM-6:00PM.  Fri: 2:00PM-7:00PM.
Exhibition Photos: http://tinyurl.com/7kpc4og

Yes, I missed this one, but am posting the notice for archival purposes – and you can look at the photos. This was an exhibition of modern lace by artist Ria Demeyere. ‘Lijnen’ is ‘linen’, and ‘draad’ is ‘wire’, so you can interpret this as you like. It does look like most of the lace is conventional or metalic thread, backed up with ceramics and paintings. Here’s a translation of the text in the poster:

The aim of this exhibition is to show that by applying “lace techniques” in a creative way, artistic objects can be realized. Draadlijnen is a quest for new techniques and materials in lace art. The delicacy and transparency of lace structures are emphasized through the use of paint on canvas and ceramics.
