Ebay Alerts! Fifteen items – January 22, 2012

http://tinyurl.com/6qdvwau YARDAGE BRUSSELS LACE, 10″ WIDE
Size: 10″ x 120″
Starting Price: $20.00
Auction ends: Jan 24, 2012 19:13:05 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller smtraversy, Concord, NH 03301, United States
Comments: A long, wide “Brabant” flemish flounce.  The term is generically used to indicate lace made outside the major lacemaking centers like Brussels and Ghent. It also implies a design and workmanship of less sophistication. Some arguments go on as to whether or not this kind of lace was made in Devon, but I think the evidence is pretty clear for Flanders. The 5-pointed star ground is very typical of this pieced lace.   (I hesitate to say ‘fond chant’ or ‘cat stitch’ because we really don’t know what it was called in the first part of the 18th century).  There’s all the good intentions in the world on the filling stitches, but not really up to par with contemporary Brussels work. This is a good collectible length, and the seller is of the opinion that there is no damage. But not much of it is shown, so hard to make a call on that. I do see a few loose brides here and there. I’m also not sure if the header just below the linen strip is original. Contemporary, but not part of the original piece.

   Sold for $201.50, 4 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/7hqnmab Beautiful Antique Handmade Lace Lappets
Size: 74″ long, 7.5″ wide at ends, 3″ middle join.
Starting Price: 9.99 GBP
Auction ends: Jan 25, 2012 12:00:56 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller baraud, Newton Abbot, United Kingdom
Comments: A Duchess lappet scarf, the motifs have a definite fine Gand character. Beautiful work, closelywoven, with a delicate bride ground. Note the tally fillings, almost like Honiton. I don’t see any condition issues. Maybe a little white and there’s some wrinkling along the rolled raised work. Might just be the technique used, but could also have been washed at some time.

Sold for 103.00 GBP, 10 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/7qg72tt ANTIQUE MALTESE LACE BERTHA /COLLAR
Size: 48″ long, 14″ deep at widest point
Starting Price: 35.00 GBP
Auction ends: Jan 26, 2012 09:02:50 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller amberfarleigh, Willington, Co Durham, United Kingdom
Comments: There aren’t any photos of the whole piece, so it’s hard to tell the exact form. Seems to be a small mantilla form, a triangular form.  It has a fun, dense design with serpentine scrolls outside and basically circular medallions in a large square grid inside. Condition looks good, I don’t see any problems from the photos given.

Sold for 58.00 GBP, 4 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/7e2c32c Brussels bobbin lace, beautiful flounce applied on net 11 yards
Size: 10″ wide, 11 yards 10″ long
Starting Price: $49.99
Auction ends: Jan 26, 2012 09:24:03 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller calicogre, Ottawa, ON, Canada
Comments: There certainly have been a lot of very long Brussels application on machine net lately. This one is bobbinlace, with a few tiny knots of needlelace as fillings. A good middle market piece, the design is not terribly inspiring. But note the rings in the ground, that took some effort. Length is exceptional. It looks in overall very good condition, but not enough photos to tell for certain.

$178.50, 4 bidders, reserve not met.

Size: 20.9″ x 94.5″
Starting Price: $125.00
Auction ends: Jan 26, 2012 13:04:42 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller sirjle, PARIS, France
Comments: A rectangular Brussels application on machine net shawl. All bobbinlace motifs, small and thin design giving it a light appearance. The net looks in quite good condition, just a few tiny holes and a little separation at the edge. I like the basket design on the ends.

   Sold for $130.50, 3 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/6utyhfz 19thc Large Brussels Duchesse Lace 63″x 7.5″ Dentelle Bruxelles 1,60m x 19cm
Size: 7.5″ x 63″
Starting Price: $85.00
Auction ends: Jan 26, 2012 13:18:12 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller sirjle, PARIS, France
Comments: I like the bold geometric design of this flounce, with well defined separation of half and whole stitch. The flowers are quite closely worked. I’d say it’s a Bruges piece. Overall good conditions, but I can see the 2 joins the seller mentions.

  No bids.

Starting Price: 24.99 EUR
Auction ends: Jan 28, 2012 08:50:13 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller brocjob, Auvergne, France
Comments: This looks like Chebka needlelace, and I’d expect something like this in France since the Tunesian product had a strong market in France. It’s a good insertion of typical diamond design. The thread is a bit coarse, I’ve seen finer (see my writeup on Chebka at http://tinyurl.com/7hun6q7. This piece could have been made as a freehand needlelace, no drawn pattern. Condition from what I can see looks very good.

Starting Price: 24.99 EUR
Auction ends: Jan 28, 2012 12:05:32 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller garchick, Tunbridge Wells, United Kingdom
Comments: Point de Gaze, all needlelace. Short, and a little wrinkled, but a definite tour de force. A naturalistic design with multiple layered petal flowers. Some good fillings. For what there is, the condition looks quite good.  Romantic design in a good sense, maybe 3rd quarter 19th century.

   No bids.

Size: 34″ across laid flat
Starting Price: $10.00 with reserve
Auction ends: Jan 28, 2012 15:10:31 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller eastayton, London. England, United Kingdom
Comments: A very impressive piece, combining the woven leaves and finely worked areas of guipure. These pieces were normally made in narrow widths to fit the Maltese/Gozian pillow, and sewn together later. I’d like to get a closeup of the join between the guipure fan and the woven leaf ground, it’s an interesting technical problem. Condition looks very good.

    Sold for $190.00, 5 bidders.

Starting Price: $10.00 with reserve
Auction ends: Jan 28, 2012 15:20:34 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller eastayton, London. England, United Kingdom
Comments: One of the largest pieces of Honiton I’ve ever seen, and the work is excellent. Doesn’t get much better as far as technique goes.  The design composition is interesting, seems to be bands of  similar design next to each other to create a symmetric design. Two large flower sprays finish each end.  Condition looks excellent.

$511.00, 5 bidders, reserve not met.

Size: not given
Starting Price: $10.00 with reserve
Auction ends: Jan 28, 2012 15:30:45 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller eastayton, London. England, United Kingdom
Comments: We seem to be having a run on hollie point this week. A typical baby’s cap with a round cap back and a strip of hollie pint along the top. The use of words in hollie point is unusual.  Condition looks very good.

   Sold for $560.00, 5 bidders.

Starting Price: $140.00
Auction ends: Jan 28, 2012 16:00:32 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller eastayton, London. England, United Kingdom
Comments: An interesting Hollie point strip, with figures down the center. What really sets it apart is the attempt at a different ground to the sides. A little frayed, but overall good condition.

   Sold for $285.00, 3 bidders.

Starting Price: $10.00 with reserve
Auction ends: Jan 28, 2012 16:20:23 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller eastayton, London. England, United Kingdom
Comments: This piece is exceptional for the labeling, although I hesitate to endorse a Mexican origin. It has the typical ñanduti palm-leaf edge, and the work is very good. The only thing we really see from Mexico in Sol laces are those little eagles with the snake with the words ‘Mexico’ around the edge. At least we think they are Mexican. Silk? That would also be unusual.  Condition looks excellent.

$144.49, 3 bidders, reserve not met.

Starting Price: $10.00 with reserve
Auction ends: Jan 28, 2012 16:30:40 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller eastayton, London. England, United Kingdom
Comments: The finished part of this work is really wonderful. I’ll assume there is a couched heavy thread outline that would indicate carrickmacross. This lace would have been made on a frame. It’s a fascinating look at the process of making this lace, but might not appeal to every collector. Condition is obviously unused, but I do see a few stains.

   Sold for $199.00, 4 bidders.

Starting Price: $10.00 with reserve
Auction ends: Jan 28, 2012 16:35:12 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller eastayton, London. England, United Kingdom
Comments: This is a very good way to end up today’s reviews.  A long, rectangular Duchesse de Bruxelles stole, with an elegant, romantic design. Two Point de Gaze inserts at each end, with good roses. I can’t tell if the petals are raised. Some nice needlelace fillings used as decoration near the inserts.  In looking at the design, it is very dense and seems to be a bit thrown together toward the center. Better at the ends. The needlelace roses are very large – probably to match the size of the bobbinlace flowers. Condition looks excellent; I don’t see any significant problems.

$830.00, 8 bidders, reserve not met.

The American Chestnut tree, once widespread in the eastern US, is now almost extinct due to the ravages of the chestnut blight fungus first noticed in 1904. It killed about 3 billion trees in a few decades. The sweet chestnut and horse chestnut trees are however, common in southern Europe. Wouldn’t it be interesting if someone could do an entry in this contest based on a tribute to the vanishing American Chestnut?

Entries can be in the following techniques: Bobbin lace, needle lace, Sprang, Frivolité, filet crochet, knit lace, Tenerife lace, appliqué lace on tulle. There are three categories, bobbinlace, all other lace types, and a junior category up to age 16.  Size is limited to 30cm x 50cm area, 12cm high for 3-dimensional pieces. The work will be judged by an independent jury, consisting of several members, the following criteria:
Implementation of the Chestnut theme
Originality
Quality or work
Validity
Overall impression

Seller: Ebay seller twist-in-time, Philadelphia / DFW, United States
Comments: A bertha in the French Cluny tradition. It has a good bold pattern, with motifs increasing in size from the neckline out. Lots of raised tallies and leaves, all well done. Seller cites a few faint spots, very minor.

Seller: Ebay seller twist-in-time, Philadelphia / DFW, United States
Comments: A wide mechlin border in a good collectible length, early 19thc. It has a rather thin design, almost like Arras point ground lace. It has the same rather streaky ground which could be a sign of sightly uneven linen thread. Delicate fillings, well done, and in very good condition, I don’t see anything wrong from the photos.

Comments: Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net fan leaf, mounted on blonde faux tortoiseshell sticks, with a silver monogram. Sometimes these silver pieces have small diamonds. The lace has a very strong left-right symmetry. Nicely worked motifs, with a few needlelace rings as accents and line fillings. The lace looks in very good condition.

Comments: Normally I don’t do much with bobbins, there are so many, new and old, on Ebay every day. But I thought this was a well-matched set of simple named bone pieces, in good condition, and likely by the same maker. Seller speculates ‘Blunt end man’.

Seller: Ebay seller twist-in-time, Philadelphia / DFW, United States
Comments: A wide, elaborate Bucks border, not too dissimilar in feel from the piece I used as the January 2011 featured lace. Good contrast between the dense border and the very plain edge at the top. The work is excellent, with only a few tiny breaks in the ground. very minor.

Seller: Ebay seller twist-in-time, Philadelphia / DFW, United States
Comments:
A rare hollie-point decorated cap and shirt. 18th century, not entirely sure when.  Lace on the sleeves looks like mid 18thc Mechlin, and there’s some whitework embroidery next to the holly point on the linen. The lace looks like it is worked back and forth along the long edge rather than across the width – I think this is unusual. May point to a slightly later date.  It seems to have a 200 year old provenance, although when you start to count backwards is unclear. Very minor condition issues, negligible in view of the importance of the set.

Comments:
A Honiton border of rather serpentine design. Thick brides of a narrow woven tape.  Some good tally fillings in large spaces. It looks a lot like a 19th century descendant of the later 18th century Devon laces. Seller cites 4 breaks and several spots, one seam. Overall good condition.

Comments:
A Brussels Duchesse bertha with nine Point de Gaze inserts. The bobbinlace is a bit plain, more on the Bruges side, nicely done. Needlelace roses have one raised petal with minimal fillings.  Looking closeup this isn’t the most impressive lace, but looking at the overall effect it is quite effective. And the condition is very good, very minor issues.

Comments:
The mounting on this fan is similar to the one described above, but without the silver initial. The lace is Brussels Duchesse, with rather large, but well made bobbin motifs with lots of raised work. Two areas of Point de Gaze with typical roses. The design seems a bit haphazard to me, as if some leftover motifs were thrown together. Seller does not describe the lace, but it looks in very good condition.

An intriguing piece. Wish there were some fine closeups. Looks kind of like Mechlin, but I’ve never seen anything quite like it before.  The lower edge looks unusual, no picots, just catch pin and return. But there’s a rigid row of picots on top. I’d be interested to hear what people think of this piece. Condition looks very good.

Comments:
A dress front of point ground bobbinlace with halfstitch clothwork. Nice honeycomb fillings.  Wit the gimp you might think white Chantilly, but looks like the thread is cotton. Maybe something made around WWI in traditional Chantilly centers when silk thread was becoming rare. I’m thinking the neck edge treatment might be original to the lace, see how it blends in so nicely at the point, wish there was a closeup of that. Condition looks very good. A very interesting piece.

Comments:
19th century Valenciennes this wide is fairly rare, and when you do find it, the design is usually more elaborate. But this piece has dense clothwork and good line drawing of a leaf and grape bunches, with rings and swags below. Simple circles dot the ground. It’s really long, and condition is very good. Sometimes with pieces this long the clothwork tends to be a bit loose; not here. Probably Belgian.

19th century Blonde de Caen (although some of our Spanish friends might argue for Catalonian Bonde). Note the areas of half stitch contrasting with the dense whole stitch. It’s in about as good condition as you are likely to find in this kind of lace, and the whole piece is beautifully crisp. Size is exceptional.

Sold for $30.00, 2 bidders.

Comments: Hard to tell from the photos if this is silk – probably is. It does have the kind of star-shaped fillings that are associated with Spain. A few tears and small holes, but overall good condition.

Sold for $122.50, 5 bidders.

Comments: Definitely not the most exciting lappet scarf I’ve ever seen, but it does to have the handmade droschel net. The orientation of the mesh is a bit odd, plaits running perpendicular to the long edge rather than parallel. I imagine the net was cut from a larger piece.  The motifs are very small and seem to be appliqued on. A few holes in the net, but overall good condition. Early 19th c.
