Ebay Alerts! Ten items – December 25, 2011

http://tinyurl.com/7d8wva3 ANTIQUE LACE- PRETTY BRUSSELS LACE
Size: 4″ x 60″
Starting Price: $75.00
Auction ends: Dec 28, 2011 06:40:18 PST
Seller: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: A narrow border of Brussels bobbinlace application on machine net.  Well-worked small motifs, quite naturalistic. Note the small esprit circles in the ground, sign of a better quality piece. Seller cites a few small openings in the ground, and there might be a little discontinuity along the footer attachment. Overall good condition.

   old for $75.00, 1 bidder.

http://tinyurl.com/7ywxpzl ANTIQUE LACE-CIRCA 1700’s, SUPERB VALENCIENNE LACE
Size: 2-3.4″ x 31″
Starting Price: $45.00 with reserve
Auction ends: Dec 28, 2011 06:41:12 PST
Seller: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: A high-quality Valenciennes border with the 5-hole ground that was developed just after then snowflake ground.  Snowflakes used as fillings, as well as the quatrefoil design you also find in Mechlin. The design is flowing and naturalistic, good flat line drawing delineation. Seller cites minor openings, but overall very good condition. One of my favorite laces.  Dates 1730-1740. Wish it were longer.

   Sold for $295.00, 3 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/6nnstha ANTIQUE LACE-SUPERB HANDKERCHIEF
Size: ~11″ square
Starting Price: $45.00 with reserve
Auction ends: Dec 28, 2011 06:41:34 PST
Seller: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: A mystery piece. Given the small size and elaborate design, including fleur-de-lis, I wonder if this piece doesn’t have a religious purpose. And maybe a little Art Nouveau? It is very unusual even for a pieced lace. I wonder if it isn’t a fine Spanish lace. Condition looks very good, aside from a little staining, I don’t see any problems from the photos.

   Sold for $295.00, 3 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/7sq3bm7 ANTIQUE LACE-FINE BINCHE LACE HANDKERCHIEF
Size: ~12.5″ square
Starting Price: $45.00 with reserve
Auction ends: Dec 28, 2011 06:41:54 PST
Seller: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: A Binche handkerchief, later 19th or 20th c. It almost looks likes two layers, but I don’t see any obvious  seam. It has a good, snowy appearance. No small tallies which would push it into the Point de Fee regime. Good close work, and condition looks very good. Seller cites a few small openings, and some spots, all minor.

$113.06, 4 bidders, reserve not met.

http://tinyurl.com/88y24b6 ANTIQUE LACE-RARE NEEDLEPOINT HANDKERCHIEF
Size: ~14″ square
Starting Price: $45.00 with reserve
Auction ends: Dec 28, 2011 06:42:18 PST
Seller: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: An interesting Venise handkerchief – work looks Belgian. Good tight clothwork with diamond windows, and ornamented raised cordonnets with loops and picoted edges. Italy is also a possibility for something like this, but I don’t think it would be Burano – but would have to get a much closer look to rule it out completely. Zele in Belgium did this kind of work, but normally in a more figural context. Condition looks very good from the photos, no obvious problems that I can see.

$178.49, 4 bidders, reserve not met.

http://tinyurl.com/6nnkbe7 ANTIQUE LACE- CIRCA 1700’s, FINE MILANESE LACE
Size: 5.5″ x 45″
Starting Price: $75.00
Auction ends: Dec 28, 2011 06:42:50 PST
Seller: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: Milan started using plaited grounds like this in the later 17th century, continuing on into the early 18th c. The undulating tapes, doubled back on themselves with flower terminals, the elaborated header and plain tape footer, are all Milanese characteristics. This one lacks any elaborate fillings, but is still a nice example. Few small holes, one join (not sure where), overall good condition.

   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/722p37q ANTIQUE VINTAGE HEIRLOOM IRISH CROCHET JACKET SHIRT
Size: 15″ across front bust, 14″ across shoulder front, 16″ length
Starting Price: $150.00, $175.00 Buy-it-Now
Auction ends: Dec 28, 2011 12:13:38 PST
Seller: Ebay seller nannysgirl, Georgia, United States
Comments: An Irish crochet shirt with lots of small detail. Mainly Rose of Sharon used as cloth, with raised buttons, and some nice leafwork and other raised work along the front seam. Condition looks very good, I don’t see any problems from the photos.

   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/7xev776 PERFECT MUSEUM QUALITY c1870 SHEER LAWN& DEEP HONITON BOBBIN LACE WEDDING HANKY
Size: 14″ square
Starting Price: $178.00 Buy-it-Now
Auction ends: Little less than 4 days
Seller: Ebay seller grannyfannyssattic, Lebanon, Tennessee, United States
Comments: A Honiton handkerchief, a little on the snails/slugs side. I’ve heard those round roses called ‘cabbage roses’. Nicely worked piece with a few plaited tallies. Good design. A few stains, no damage to the lace.

   1/6/12 still available.

http://tinyurl.com/8ywnnb6 MAGNIFICENT MUSEUM QUALITY c1850 HONITON BOBBIN LACE COLAR~THISTLES~LEAFS~ROSES
Size: 20″ neck edge, 42″ outer edge. 4″-5.5″ deep
Starting Price: $298.00 Buy-it-Now
Auction ends: Little less than 4 days
Seller: Ebay seller grannyfannyssattic, Lebanon, Tennessee, United States
Comments: A Honiton collar with needlelace ground – the so-called Honiton Point. Very good, fine work with nice delineation in the half-stitch leaves. Good and varied tally fillings. Very good condition, I don’t see anything major form the photos. Overall a nice example, well away from the slugs/snails genra. Note the roses – you see this tape-like pattern in early Devon laces.

   1/6/12 still available.

http://tinyurl.com/7gytaav Ornate Wide Antique Victorian 19th C Chantilly Lace Trim Flounce 156″ 3.9 meter
Size: 156″ long, not sure how wide.
Starting Price: $170.00 Buy-it-Now
Auction ends: Jan 12, 2012 18:31:18 PST
Seller: Ebay seller canalettored, Connecticut, United States
Comments: A Chantilly flounce, long, but no width given. They are usually around 12″ wide. Photography counts a lot in selling lace on Ebay. I like the green background, finding just the right background color that absorbs shadows for black lace is always a challenge. Closeups are included which definitely mark this as handmade. It has a good swag and flower design, few small holes, nothing major. No racroc separation that I can see. Seller says both ends are finished, I’m not sure it that’s original or part of the use of this piece. But then, it doesn’t seem very used.  Probably Belgian.

      1/6/12 still available.

Size: ~5″ tall
Starting Price: $375.00
Auction ends: Dec 24, 2011 04:41:50 PST
Seller: Ebay seller cesareureka, Antwerpen, Belgium
Comments: A medium-height Vande Voorde Flemish Pottery lacemaker.  Good strong colors, with the ‘flame’ streaking that Brugge is known for. Openwork chair, and well definied details. Looks like a little firing mark on the bottom of the back of the chair, otherwise very good condition.

   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/7mk7m6k FANTASTIC LARGE PIECE OF 19THC SILK BLACK CHANTILLY LACE MUSEUM QUALITY 1
Size: 18″ x 155″
Starting Price: $375.00 Buy-it-Now or Make Offer
Auction ends: Dec 24, 2011 07:02:41 PST
Seller: Ebay seller seltmeister, simmerath, Germany
Comments: 18″ is wide for a Chantilly piece, more are found around the 12″ width. At just about 13′ in length, this is a good, collectible piece. The design repeat is fairly narrow but shows good complexity with arches, swags, and flowers. The seller has a some good closeup of the stitches which helps a lot in identifying handmade Chantilly. It’s probably a Belgian piece, but hard to tell unless you can properly judge a deep black color and the thread fineness. I don’t see any condition problems from the photos, and the seller doesn’t mention any, so it is difficult to judge the whole condition.

  Best offer of $249.99 accepted.

http://tinyurl.com/7smu6qh antique m o p and lace fan silver and gold inlay
Size: 9.75″ Folded length, 17.75″ wide when open.
Starting Price: 25.00 GBP with reserve
Auction ends: Dec 24, 2011 14:37:26 PST
Seller: Ebay seller gertjanvanveghel2009, Rotterdam, Netherlands
Comments: A Brussels Duchesse fan with ornamented mother of pearl sticks. Three Point de Gaze inserts, no raised work, and simple ornamentation. There’s some tears in the needlelace ground. The lace looks a bit yellow, other photos are whiter, so difficult to judge the color of the lace. The sticks appear to be in very good condition.

122.00 GBP, 4 bidders, reserve not met.

http://tinyurl.com/89zzdqc JULES VERWEST – BELGIUM – OLD LADY IN TRADITIONAL COSTUME MAKING BOBBIN LACE
Size: 22.5″ x 25.25″ without frame.
Starting Price: $425.00
Auction ends: Dec 25, 2011 16:13:06 PST
Seller: Ebay seller quicart, Eindhoven, Netherlands
Comments: Portrait of a Belgian lacemaker. Jules Verwest (Aug 25, 1883 – June 1, 1957) was born in Ghent. Look him up on Wikipedia or http://julesverwest.blogspot.com/, he started young and won many awards. As with listings like this, buyer beware, contact the seller to assure yoursef that this is original. Seller says the frame is new, and condition is very good. I don’t know that much about oil painting condition. It is a lovely image.

   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/7t4yrbp ANTIQUE LACE- LOVELY BRUSSELS DUCHESS LACE HANDKERCHIEF
Size: ~13.5″ square
Starting Price: $150.00
Auction ends: Dec 26, 2011 11:14:20 PST
Seller: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: A high quality Brussels Duchesse handkerchief edge, no cloth center. Fine with me.  The bobbinlace is elaborate and dense with good raised work. I love the trail of needlelace jours winding midway around the piece. Seller cites some age stains, but condition of the lace looks very good.

   Sold for $150.00, 1 bidder.

http://tinyurl.com/7enqdf6 ANTIQUE LACE-FINE ALENCON LACE FLOUNCE
Size: 6.75″ x 101″
Starting Price: $45.00 with reserve
Auction ends: Dec 26, 2011 14:26:28 PST
Seller: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: I’ve been talking with Maria a lot about this piece and she kindly appended some of my comments to the listing. I look at this and see Belgium, not France. Here are a few key items:
The jours look more Belgian than French, especially the little concentric circles of knots used as a filler along the lower border.
The clothwork is a bit too open – actually Alençon did that in the later 19th century to try and speed up the work, but this looks more like the open single twist point de gaze technique.
There don’t seem to be any picots anywhere, which would be very atypical of Alençon, or Argentan. (after looking at some closeups that Maria sent, there seem to be a few looped picots in the filling rings – a Belgian technique).
But what bothers me the most  is the treatment of the little tendrils off the flowers, see how they are buttonholed on both sides of the trace. That’s a definite Belgian characteristic.
Maria sent me some closeups of the ground, see the bottom of the listing for more comments.
It is a very  interesting piece, and appears to be in good condition. Just a little fraying the ground in a few places.

$148.50, 3 bidders, reserve not met.

Size: 6.5″ x 58″
Starting Price: $225.00 Buy-it-Now or Make Offer
Auction ends: a little less than 4 days
Seller: Ebay seller avivb, New England, United States
Comments: A narrow Chantilly scarf with naturalistic flowers and leaves. It has a silk backing that looks easily removable. You never know how stable silk material actually is. Hopefully this has kept the condition quite good. It is a delicate design and good technique, might be a French piece. It has the ‘greyish’ appearance that the fine French thread would produce.

   Best offer of $175.00 accepted.

Ebay Alerts! Six items – December 18, 2011

Apologies to LaceNews readers, I’m slowly recovering from rotator cuff surgery last Wednesday. Can only type with left hand – slow going, but improving.

http://tinyurl.com/7w7mbn2 ANTIQUE LACE-C.19THC. HONITON LACE FLOUNCE

Starting Price: $95.00
Auction ends: Dec 19, 2011 05:32:34 PST
Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: A high quality wide Honiton border. Wish it were longer. The clothwork is tight with good tally fillings. The motifs are quite naturalistic, but the overall design seems a bit off. The bottom seems too large for the top – out of balance. Seller notes some broken brides, otherwise very good condition.

   Sold for $95.00, 1 bidder.

Auction ends: Dec 19, 2011 10:51:12 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller fridaschmit, Deinze, Belgium
Comments: An armorial piece labled ‘Turnhout’. I assume it was made there. It’s a kind of Flanders with snowflake ground and figural clothwork. Could be a WWI piece, or some later tourist item. Framing kept the condition very good.

   No bids.

Starting Price: $39.99
Auction ends: Dec 21, 2011 04:53:36 PST
Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: A Mechlin border with short repeat.  Fine, dense technique, designed to be ruffled. A little rough on the foot edge but basically good condition.

   Sold for $39.99, 1 bidder.

http://tinyurl.com/7r5tgos Antique lace veil or shawl Brussels lace w Point de Gaze

Starting Price: $1.00 with reserve
Auction ends: Dec 21, 2011 17:01:38 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller mmmoonchild, Maywood, United States
Comments: Two Brussels Application on machine net triangular shawls have sold for very good prices in the past few weeks, and suddenly more are coming out of hiding. Can’t quite figure out how the seller got it upside down on the manikin. But once you see it spread out in the correct orientation the design is very good. Primarily bobbin motifs, with some large needlelace flowers in the center. Nothing in the way of decorative needlelace fillings.  Good esprit work in the ground. Some stress tears around fastening points, but overall condition is good. These shawls would drape over hoop skirts for formal wear, 2nd 1/2 19thc. The large triangular black chantilly shawls were more for day wear.

   Sold for $3,900, 5 bidders.

Aching shoulder says, “Enough, already”.

Offered by: Ebay seller sirjle, PARIS, France
Comments: A Brussels Duchesse dress front with a square bib. Condition looks very good, including the needlelace net. Maybe a few yellow spots, but nothing major. I find the design a bit confused. But this form is unusual.

   Sold for $77.99, 3 bidders.

Auction ends: Dec 13, 2011 06:20:20 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller twist-in-time, Philadelphia / DFW, United States
Comments: A small Point de Gaze collar with multiple layered roses. Interesting form for a collar.  The fillings are a little conventional and it’s not the most ambitious design, but the overall effect is quite nice. I can’t see any condition problems from the photos – seller cites some light storage marks.

   Buy-it-Now option exercised for $198.00

Auction ends: Dec 13, 2011 18:09:19 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller smtraversy, Concord, NH 03301, United States
Comments: Not enough closeup photos to tell, but I think this has a needlelace ground. An unusual piece, the bobbinlace motifs have nice raised work but are a bit large. Needlelace has some good ring fillings and also a few sprigs in this curious band motif. I hesitate to call it Duchess – but I can’t quite place it. It’s almost like someone was trying to copy old Brabant work. Condition looks good, very minor defects.

   Sold for $53.00, 4 bidders.

Offered by: Ebay seller heartnsoul1, Hollis, New Hampshire, United States
Comments: Brussels applique on machine net. The wonderful drape of the net shows up beautifully with the blue background in the photo.  The bobbinlace is excellent, and the large negative spaces in the flowerheads is unusual.  All-in-all a beautiful piece in very good condition. I only wish it were photographed flat so you could see the entire design.

Offered by: Ebay seller heartnsoul1, Hollis, New Hampshire, United States
Comments: A Reticella length with typical tri-part construction and Punto in Aria boder. Age? Well, it’s in extremely good condition, which you wouldn’t expect for something this old. The funny little stitch at the very top edge is atypical of early work. The rosettes themselves don’t show much variation, and I don’t like the constant use of the triangles all over the design. I think it’s a very good 19thc copy, probably Greek, maybe Italian. Condition is very good, minor defects.

   Sold for $575.00, 7 bidders.

Offered by: Ebay seller heartnsoul1, Hollis, New Hampshire, United States
Comments: A long Valenciennes border. Probably Belgian. I’m wordering how much the maker could do in a day. It’s a very good example of what was used to edge delicate linens and nightdresses – this was not generally a lace you would wear on your evening gown. The work is quite good, but I’m not that wild about the design. But it suites the purpose very well. The condition appears very good.

Comments: A wide Valenciennes border in two long lengths. Made all in one piece on the pillow. Very good design, execution, and condition – I don’t see any problems from the photos. Now we’ll see how much collectors value a lace like this, because they should.

   Sold fo r$567.00, 5 bidders.

Comments: Brussels application on machine net. A very long piece, and this is an example of why this lace was popular. It could be made quickly in long lengths at minimal cost. The design is quite simple, the rings in the net are a good touch. It does exactly what it is supposed to do – provide yards of a serviceable edging product for the middle class market. I don’t see any problems from the photos, so it’s not easy to tell what condition the machine net is in. But it has an unused feel.

Comments: Another Brussels application on machine net, this one wider and more elaborate than the previous piece. This one is wide enough tha tyou might call it a ‘crinoline’ flounce, meant to be displayed for its design on large hoop skirts of the second half of the 19th century. The design has a naturalism enhanced by the openwork in the flowers. Not much needlelace, just a few ornaments along the bottom. I’m not sure if those chains in the bottom narRow scallops are needlelace, not enough closeups to tell.  Seller cites a few small holes and breaks

Comments: Yet another Brussels applique on machine net. A more elaborate design, quite crowded with flowers and swags. Needlelace rings as ornamentation. Seller cites a few small holes, nothing serious. Overall very good condition. I wish a manufacturer’s name had survived with all these pieces – they seem to have been bought all together originally. Maybe part of an bride’s trousseau?

Comments: A flat design Point de Gaze handkerchief with monogram. Very good condition, I can’t see any problems. Good design working well with standard motifs. Some nice needlelace fillings, and it looks quite effective for the setting.

Comments: A Chantilly parasol cover of elaborate, dense design. Looks basically unused, very good condition.  I see one small hole, minor.  Can’t tell if it is French or Belgian.

Comments:  A composite cutwork with reticella and filet cover. It has the densely finished look in the reticella that might be old, but I don’t think it is all that old. The filet could have been made anytime. And I don’t think it was assembled from earlier pieces, the cutwork inserts look shaped for their rectangles. The little triangular motifs in the reticella show up in Cyprus lace and the rosettes just don’t have a very old feeling. I think it’s basically 19th century Italian or Greek. Hard to tell. Condition is very good, which is another indication that it’s not really old.

Comments: There are those triangular motifs again in the reticella. I’ll guess 19th c Greek or Cyprus on this one, but it does have a lighter appearance than most Greek lace. It also looks assembled from other pieces, some of the motifs look cut off at borders. An impressive looking piece in very good condition.

Comments: Brussels application on machine net. The collar seems to be attached separately. Good quality bobbinlace with some small needlelace fillings with a nicely thought out design. Condition looks very good, seller cites very small seam separations around the collar. The shape is a bit odd, I wonder if it wasn’t a semicircular hat veil at some point.

Comments: Only one photo on this, but it looks quite good. I can’t make out the exact composition of the inner ground, but it seems interesting. Some nice guipure work with the crosses and outer flowers. This seller has had nice Maltese before. Condition seems good, but hard to tell from one photo.

Comments: If you buy this piece, please lose that awful frame. But I suppose it helped preserve the lace, which is quite nice.  Point de Gaze with blonde ‘faux’ tortoishell sticks. The raised petal roses (note windows in the petals) are fairly large for the design, and there are good ornamental fillings. The condition looks surprisingly good.

Comments: A large Irish Crochet collar with Clones knots on the brides. Lots of raised work in the circular flowers, and at the centers of other motifs. The design is cattered iwth small motifs and no symmetry, but quite effective. Some broken brides, especially along the centerline, otherwise good condition.

Comments: A round mat of Maltese.  Good work on the guipure, and I especially like the horseshoe rings about 3 layers from the outside. Pieces like this were always made of concentric rings sewn together later – the Maltese pillow typically handles small widths. There are a few loose brides throughout. It photographs very white, but doesn’t look washed. In fact it almost looks like cotton to me, but hard to tell.

Comments: This little handkerchief does a lot with very little. There’s a snails/slugs outerborder of roses, then an inner zigzag trail of slugs with tally fillings. The part next to the linen almost looks like a Princesse braid, but I think it’s probably  handmade. Actually not sure. Altogether it looks quite nice.  The initials are almost too good for the piece, and have a kind of glued on look (no puckering where you would expect for whitework embroidery. It’s an interesting piece.

Comments: A rosaline perlé collar of very good design and  workmanship. I can’t tell if the perls are needle- or bobbin-made. I don’t see any condition issues from the photos.  Nice piece.

Comments: These three pieces do seem to match at the ends, so theoretically could be reassembled. Someday I’ll do a post on lace repair – not as easy as you might think. This Alençon piece is wide and wonderful. It’s a later 19th century piece, with naturalistic design and excellent jour fillings.  Condition is very good.

Comments: This does seem to be the week for Brussels applique on machine net. This one is a bit discolored and worn, in the original blue paper, which is pretty cool. It has a short repeat and the design is a little conventional. But very long. Seller cites a few small holes.
