Ebay Alerts! Twelve Items – November 6, 2011

http://tinyurl.com/7ttdg6s 80″ ANTIQUE HANDMADE? BRUSSELS POINT DE GAZE LACE, DOLLS COSTUMING!!
Size: 3″ x 80″
Starting price: $6.99
Auction ends: Nov 07, 2011 17:00:26 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller ginnydolldolls, UPSTATE, NY, United States
Comments: This little border of Point de Gaze has some good fillings. And the clothwork in the motifs has some non-standard patterns. Overall the effect is quite nice. It’s not the greatest design, but the narrow space is filled well. There is a lot of damage to the reseau – I can’t tell how localized that might be along the length.

   Sold for $152.50, 4 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/79n35nq ANTIQUE LACE-PRETTY HANDMADE CHANTILLY LACE 160″
Size: 20 or 21″ x 160″
Starting price: $75.00
Auction ends: Nov 07, 2011 18:13:06 PST
Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: A long Chantilly border, wider than normal (~12″ is more typical for these long lengths). The rectangular lattice pattern is unusual, almost used like windows out of which the flowers spill.  The lower border is a more typical swag pattern.  Seller cites minor openings.

   Sold for $86.00, 3 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/7w5kkqz Antique RARE Handmade Drawnwork Lace & Linen Cloth SEE
Size: 30″ x 31″
Starting price: $95.00, $125.00 Buy-it-Now
Auction ends: Nov 08, 2011 13:26:31 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller judykahooti, holyoke, United States
Comments: These Mexican drawnworks are badly  neglected by collectors, yet the work is very beautiful. I think they suffer from ‘household linens’ stigma that pure lace collectors tend to avoid. But pieces like this are too large for a handkerchief, and not usable as table linens – it’s more of a decorative piece.  I’m collecting a lot of videos on the subject (many of which come from Mexico) for the November LaceNews Channel on Youtube update. This example is beautifully done – much of this work was imported into the US through one dealer in Texas in the early 20th century. Condition looks unused.

   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/6nyh2c3 Antique Black Maltese lace lappet
Size: 8″ x 88″
Starting price: $39.99
Auction ends: Nov 09, 2011 07:50:22 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller calicogre, Ottawa, ON, Canada
Comments: I’ll assume these lappets are joined in the 19th-20th century fashion. Black Maltese isn’t all that common, in fact if it weren’t for the St. John’s cross I might think this came from somewhere else. The leaves aren’t quite as well done as you usually see, but there’s some nice guipure work.  Condition looks a bit wrinkled, but overall quite good. One photo shows some small brown stains.

   Sold for $51.00, 3 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/7uaap59 Art populaire plior de dentelliere plaque a dentelle object de métier
Size: 9.5 cm x 16.5 cm
Starting price: 50.00 EUR
Auction ends: Nov 09, 2011 10:38:47 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller ngrd159, Aiguilhe, France
Comments: A chip-carved plioir stained black. One side shows rather typical geometric designs, but the other side has a great image of the crucifixion, the date 1886, and the initials MS.  The condition looks very good.  The opening price on this is reasonable, but I don’t think it will stay that way.

Sold for 202.00 EUR, 8 bidders.
As with all such French primitive antiques, buyer beware, fakes are common.

http://tinyurl.com/6r6u2ru Vtg Antique Brussels Applique Lace Wedding Bridal Handkerchief 19th Century Beaut
Size: 13.5″ square
Starting price: $265.00 Buy-it-Now
Auction ends: Nov 09, 2011 16:27:31 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller twist-in-time, Philadelphia / DFW, United States
Comments: Brussels applique on machine net handkerchief – no needlelace other than some tiny fillings in the flower centers.  A few pinpricks in the net, see description especially along the join to the cloth, all pretty minor. The piece has a nice presence, with a rather conventional basic design well organized into separate 8 separate vignettes. Monogram initials are well done.

   Sold for $265.00 Buy-it-Now

http://tinyurl.com/7v57fhe Antique Victorian Lace Wedding Handkerchief Unused
Size: 15″ x 14″
Starting price: $9.99
Auction ends: Nov 09, 2011 17:07:02 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller bigdawg_81, Mid Atlantic, United States
Comments: Another Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net, similar to the previous piece but less elaborate. Something I haven’t seen before – the handkerchief linen has a buttonhole cut into it to attach to a dress.  There appears to be some yellowing, and some of the arcs along the center cloth look like they are missing a few brides.

   Sold for $1009.50, 8 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/7326wb3 Antique Point De Gaze Mixed Brussels Lace Collar
Size: 2″ x 24″
Starting price: $24.00
Auction ends: Nov 09, 2011 17:50:19 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller vintageblessings, Star, ID, United States
Comments: A Brussels Duchesse collar, quite narrow, in very good condition. It has three inserts of simple Point de Gaze. The bobbinlace itself is probably more on the Bruges technique side.  I like it, it lays almost like a necklace.

   Sold for $44.99, 3 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/7vwcpwl Antique Irish Youghal Needle Lace Trim Edging RARE 41/2″ W x 1 Yd Southeby’s HM
Size: 4.5″ x 1 yard 4″
Starting price: $9.99 with reserve
Auction ends: Nov 10, 2011 04:24:46 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller twist-in-time, Philadelphia / DFW, United States
Comments: A Youghal border. Comes with a note saying it was sold at Sotheby’s in the 1980’s. The design is a bit denser than one normally sees in Youghal, but the work is good. I especially like the dense clothwork in the petals of the large flower, including diamond shaped windows.  One end seems to be finished. Condition of the lace appears very good, although there is a little staining.

   Sold for $375.00, 5 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/73cnuj2 Antique Irish crochet handmade lovely collar
Size: 4.5″ wide, 14″ inside edge
Starting price: 19.99 GBP
Auction ends: Nov 10, 2011 08:32:33 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller discover4, London, United Kingdom
Comments: An Irish Crochet collar with fairly large motifs, design is a bit abstract. It has good symmetry and the workmanship is nice. Condition looks excellent.

Sold for 19.99 GBP, 1 bidder.

http://tinyurl.com/6w7fujj Oud VLAAMS AARDEWERK – grote kantwerkster – dentellière grès des Flandres
Size: 22 cm high, 8.5 cm x 19 cm base
Starting price: 50.00 EUR
Auction ends: Nov 11, 2011 06:37:42 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller vetpoes2, Wilrijk, Belgium
Comments: A Flemish pottery lacemaker of large size. I think it might be from the Pieter Jozef Laignel (operated 1898-1929) pottery. The colors on this one are quite brilliant. Hard to say about condition, the seller doesn’t say anything, and there isn’t anything obvious from the single photo.

Sold for 50.00 EUR, 1 bidder.

http://tinyurl.com/6wq5lnf * 18thc BRUSSELS – DEVON ? Bobbin Lace Border w. BUTTERFLIES c.1760 *
Size: 3″ x 64″
Starting price: 29.99
Auction ends: Nov 11, 2011 11:46:00 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller jaruk, Worcester., Worcs., United Kingdom
Comments: Brussels bobbinlace with the droschel ground worked around the motifs. It could be Devon, very hard to say.  I’d personally go with Belgium because of the extensive snowflake fillings in some motifs. I like the butterflies. For a piece like this it is in fairly good shape – you often see a lot more damage to the droschel ground.

   Sold for $221.49, 5 bidders.

Ebay Alerts! Fifteen items – November 3, 2011

http://tinyurl.com/3ruw5l9 RARE FRENCH ANTIQUE LACE COLLAR handmade
Size: 17.5″ outside, 12.5″ inside, 1.25″ wide
Starting price: 19.99 GBP
Auction ends: Nov 05, 2011 12:26:21 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller ryphat, Paris, France
Comments: One might be tempted to pass this by without a second look, but I think it’s interesting. And it’s a good day for such guipures, there will be several in this post. It’s a small collar, I don’t think it’s Beds. It has a more French Le Puy look, especially with the elaborate brides.  Nicely raised tallies in the circular motifs, and note the rather complex fillings inside the circles. Looks like a bit of damage at the neck edge in the center, but other than that it’s mainly wrinkled.

   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/3kjmnua DENTELLE CHANTILLY NOIRE ANCIENNE/ANTIC LACE BLACK 400X28 CM
Size: 11″ x ~157″
Starting price: 58.00 EUR
Auction ends: Nov 06, 201102:49:24 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller pouchant86, Jouhet, France
Comments: A long Chantilly border, very typical width for this kind of thing. The design is rather ordinary, and it is probably Belgian although the photos aren’t really good enough to see if it has the deep black color typical of products of Grammont. Condition looks very good, seller sites one or two broken threads, very minor.

Sold for 58.00 EUR, 1 bidder.

http://tinyurl.com/44vb337 LARGE PIECED 19TH CENTURY DUCHESSE POINT DE GAZE LACE FLOUNCE / TRIM 84″ X 5″
Size: 5″ x 84″
Starting price: $25.00
Auction ends: Nov 06, 2011 11:26:15 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller nelliegardner, Evanston Illinois, United States
Comments: This is an estate piece, the seller seems to have information on the previous owner’s family which included a lace merchant. It is all Point de Gaze, and I like the rose with the single raised petal, a little more solid than normally seen.  Overall the design is fairly conventional, and there isn’t much in the way of decorative fillings. But it does have a nice presence overall. There do seem to be a number of holes in the ground.

   Sold for $285.00, 7 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/42q8tl5 EXTRA QWIDE & LARGE PIECE OF 19TH CENTURY DUCHESSE POINT DE GAZE LACE 91″ X 7″
Size: 7″ x 91″
Starting price: $25.00
Auction ends: Nov 06, 2011 11:26:15 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller nelliegardner, Evanston Illinois, United States
Comments: Another Point de Gaze flounce from the same estate as the previous piece, but a little wider. There doesn’t seem to be any raised work in this one. The design is also a little more open. Again, seller cites some holes in the ground.  Take a look also at 280764201739, which is a narrow Point de Gaze border cut in two from the same estate.

   Sold for $265.00, 7 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/43sd924 VERY FINE ANTIQUE 19TH CENTURY LACE POINT DE GAZE LAPPET 4 1/2″ X 40 1/2″
Size: 4.5″ X 40.5″
Starting price: $30.00
Auction ends: Nov 06, 2011 11:32:05 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller nelliegardner, Evanston Illinois, United States
Comments: Yet again a Point de Gaze piece from the same estate. Nice 19th century lappet scarf. Good design, and a few interesting fillings. Note the single picots around the edge, I’ve seen this before and one could probably determine the manufacturer from this characteristic.  Again, the holes in the net downside.

   Sold for $141.06, 7 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/3aq99oe LARGE 170″ X 6″ BRUXELLE BOBBIN & POINT DE GAZE LACE FLOUNCE EARLY 19TH CENTURY
Size: 6″ x 170″
Starting price: $30.00
Auction ends: Nov 06, 2011 11:36:50 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller nelliegardner, Evanston Illinois, United States
Comments: One last piece from the Illinois estate.  A nice Duchesse de Bruxelles flounce, quite long. The bobbinlace is well worked, and the needlelace is kept simple so it doesn’t overpower the rest of the work. Again, a few holes, although not as bad as in the other pieces. There is some staining in this piece.

   Sold for $470.55, 7 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/447ak4e ANTIQUE LACE- 127-128″ BRUSSELS LACE EDGING 322.6c cm
Size: 4″ x 127-128″
Starting price: $195.00
Auction ends: Nov 06, 2011 15:22:03 PST
Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: A narrow border of Brussels application on machine net.  The design is quite simple, with some dots in the ground. Which gives it a bit more character. I can’t see any condition problems, which is very important with lace like this. The machine net doesn’t often survive well.  The length is also a plus, it’s usable (although as a collector that’s not an important consideration to me.)

   Sold for $197.50, 2 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/3ccgw3h ANTIQUE LACE- FINE BRUSSELS LACE POINT DE GAZE LAPPETS
Size: 4″ x 14″ each
Starting price: $150.00
Auction ends: Nov 06, 2011 15:26:33 PST
Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: The design and workmanship on these lappets is very good. Note the separated spiky picots around the edge.  They do a lot with the flat design and no particular emphasis on decorative fillings. Usually pieces like this were joined together – this one looks cut in half with some of the original missing. I also see a few tiny pinholes in the net, and one filling of one flower is gone.

   Sold for $150.00, 1 bidder.

http://tinyurl.com/6gykwso ANTIQUE LACE-LOVELY BRUSSELS LACE LAPPETS
Size: not given
Starting price: $39.99
Auction ends: Nov 06, 2011 16:25:28 PST
Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: Duchesse de Bruxelles lappets – you can’t see it from the photos, but these were originally one piece and have been cut apart. I’ll assume nothing is missing. The needlelace is confined to an area of ornamental fillings only, which I find nice. One of the pieces seems photographed from the back. The motifs are small and the general design is fairly conventional.  Condition appears good, I don’t see anything major.

   Sold for $49.99, 1 bidder.

http://tinyurl.com/3learaa ANTIQUE LACE-RARE 19THC. LACE PARASOL COVER

Starting price: $45.00 with reserve
Auction ends: Nov 06, 2011 17:22:18 PST
Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: A really interesting piece.  I don’t think it’s English – I’ll suggest Miracourt. It might even have a bit of a Czech feel, although I’d have to dig out some references to come up with comparables. Note the areas of clothwork that almost look like cut cloth  Condition looks excellent. See the related piece 150689037200, which has a similar feel, but is rather cut up.

   Sold for $645.99, 3 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/4yrho5h ANTIQUE LACE-LOVELY CHANTILLY LACE FLOUNCE 158-159″ BY 19″

Starting price: $125.00
Auction ends: Nov 06, 2011 18:29:36 PST
Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: It’s wide, even for a Chantily flounce; the longer ones are most commonly around 12″ wide.  I like the big curled leaf design. Can’t tell if it is Belgian or French. Condition looks good, seller cites a few openings, but I can’t see them.

   Sold for $150.50, 2 bidders.

Starting price: $19.99
Auction ends: Nov 07, 2011 11:34:36 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller jaruk, Worcester., Worcs., United Kingdom
Comments: A very delicate, finely worked Mechlin border in a good size. It has a late 18th century feel. Seller cites some tiny pinholes, with is quite minor. It looks translucent against the blue background.

   Sold for $103.50, 5 bidders.

Starting price: $19.99
Auction ends: Nov 07, 2011 11:38:51 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller jaruk, Worcester., Worcs., United Kingdom
Comments: A narrow rectangular Maltese scarf. The scalloped border around the edge is made separately, the inner part consists of two matched lengths joined lengthwise – this is to accommodate the small width of the Maltese lace pillow.  It’s a nice, effective piece with good guipure and leaf work. Condition looks very good, I don’t see any problems.

   Sold for $330.90, 8 bidders.

Size: 15″ square

Auction ends: Nov 07, 2011 11:48:27 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller jaruk, Worcester., Worcs., United Kingdom
Comments: A Brussels bobbinlace application on machine net handkerchief. The motifs are quite small and the design rather open.  I think it looks better from a distance than it does closeup. The attachment to the center cloth is a bit sloppy.  Condition appears very good, I don’t see any particular problems.

   Sold for $132.50, 7 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/3s3f7cr * 19thc MALTESE Cream Silk BOBBIN LACE Manitilla / Shawl *
Size: 29″ x 60″
Starting price: $19.99
Auction ends: Nov 07, 201111:56:18 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller jaruk, Worcester., Worcs., United Kingdom
Comments: A very nice Maltese Mantilla. The seller thinks it may have been died – hard to judge the color from the photos. Maybe. The colors in the last photos are a bit spotty – hard to tell what’s going on here.  The condition is so good, it’ doesn’t have that washed looked that you might expect. I’m wondering if it isn’t something about the original thread color.

   Sold for $305.01, 9 bidders.
