Starting price: 49.99 GBP
Auction ends: Aug 22, 2011 08:59:42 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller discover4, London, United Kingdom
Comments: A good long Point de Gaze border. Motifs are a little clumsy, but with an unusual design of what looks like violets. Very heavy rings are used as fillings. Overall good condition, just a few minor pulls.

Sold for 72.00 GBP, 4 bidders.

Offered by: Ebay seller ryphat, Paris, France
Comments: I thought this was an interesting piece, although the origin is pretty obscure. Italian? Maybe Eastern European or Russian? The thread looks to be linen. The design is an abstraction of a basic flower and vine pattern that I find fascinating. Condition is very good, no problems that I can see in the photos.

   No bids.

Comments: Big tatted collar of small snowflake roundels. The joinings do not look tied, although the photos aren’t close enough to really tell.  I don’t see any obvious damage.

Comments: Very good Duchesse de Bruges collar with a lovely pattern.  A few needlelace fillings for accent, but mainly this relies on the skillful arrangement of some rather typical floral motifs. Condition appears very good, seller cites one broken bride and a small spot.

Auction ends: Aug 24, 2011 06:51:16 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller vntgclothing, Winchester, New Hampshire, United States
Comments: Well.  The photos aren’t very good, the one closeup does look like handmade chantilly, although I wish there were more honeycomb fillings. The overall damage is consistent with the failure of the racroc stitch holding the strips together. The design is fairly complex, and if you can find a racroc expert and the appropriate thread, it’s worth restoring. If nothing else it gives you a good picture of how these large shawls were constructed.

   Sold for $75.00, 8 bidders.

Offered by: Ebay seller ryphat, Paris, France
Comments: A long Cluny guipure, probably French or German manufacture. It’s a rather conventional design; a heavy lace meant for edging linens. Nice raised work on the half-stitch background. I don’t see any damage from the photos, although maybe a little brown staining in spots.

   Sold for $59.88, 5 bidders.

Comments: A good length of Chantilly. The design is a bit unusual, both with the scalloped and peaked edge, and with the motifs that almost look taken from Beveran Lille patterns. Condition looks very good, I can’t spot any damage.

   Sold for $89.90, 1 bidder.

Comments: Black silk Le Puy guipures are definitely an acquired taste for the collector, and often don’t bring the prices I think they deserve. Just studying the varied grounds used in these laces is fascinating. And when a really fine piece comes along, it blows you away. This one is wide, long, and of good but rather standard design. The combination of a plaited and a point ground is very typical of Le Puy.  Condition looks very good from the photos – maybe just a little alignment problem with the leaf fillings along the lower edge, but that’s a manufacturing difficulty, not a condition issue.

   No bids.

Offered by: Ebay seller latrenda, St. Paul, MN, United States
Comments: Good shawl of a lace sometimes known as ‘Flanders’, although many laces carried that name over the years.  The motifs are bobbinmade, with two needlelace grounds. The motifs are not too complex, basically trefoil flowers with lots of scrolls and a little raised work.. There do appear to be a few small bobbin fillings in some open spaces. This is a lace designed for effect at a distance, and it succeeds very well. Very good condition, I can’t see anything wrong in the photos.

   Sold for $182.50, 6 bidders.

Starting price: $9.99 with reserve
Auction ends: Aug 24, 2011 19:15:38 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller jamiexmas*, Southbridge, Massachusetts, United States
Comments: I was thinking this looked like Alençon from a distance, but it’s not. It’s more a Zele technique. Note the looped picots on the lower edge, I think this was developed in imitation of Alençon horsehair. The clothwork is much more solid than Point de Gaze, and there’s plenty of room for innovative jour fillings. Raised work is limited to the buttonholed edges. This kind of needlelace is some of the best later 19th century work ever done, and even this pieces is less elaborate than some I’ve seen.  A few pinholes in the ground, but overall very good condition. Just wish it were longer.

Sold for $157.51, 9 bidders.

Offered by: Ebay seller jamiexmas*, Southbridge, Massachusetts, United States
Comments: A good Honiton collar, slugs/snails period, nicely worked. The ground is quite effective with the little woven areas where several brides intersect. Rather conventional leaves, roses and thistle designs, but the overall look is nice. I see one minor break in the center neckline, but overall condition looks very good.

Auction ends: Aug 24, 2011 19:24:41 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller jamiexmas*, Southbridge, Massachusetts, United States
Comments: A good collar of Belgian needlelace, no raised rose petals, and well done jour fillings. The drawing of the flowers is quite nice. Note the imitation ‘horsehair’ picots along the edges, calling Alençon to mind. This is some of the best Belgian needlelace, although not quite as over-the-top as some I’ve seen. Condition looks very good from the photos, no problems that I can see.

Offered by: Ebay seller jamiexmas*, Southbridge, Massachusetts, United States
Comments: The droschel gound in this piece fits between the motifs at various angles, not completely aligned. and the design doesn’t have the realism of some contemporary Brussels work. It could be a sign of a Brabant manufacture, or perhaps even English (also a distinct possibility given the types of bobbinlace fillings). The piece is nicely executed, finer than it looks in the photos – remember it’s only 2″ wide.  Overall very good condition, unusual for lace of this period.

$76.00, 4 bidders, reserve not met.

Offered by: Ebay seller jamiexmas*, Southbridge, Massachusetts, United States
Comments: Good Brussels Application on machine net.  Mostly bobbinlace, but with some interesting needlelace fillings. The design is quite nice, and the work is well executed. It’s a little distracting that you can see the machine net behind some of the motifs, interferes a bit with the needlelace fillings. I’m surprised that wasn’t cleaned up in some of the larger motifs as it was in the swags at the lower edge. One seam and seller notes a few small age spots, but overall very good condition.  Note one join that the seller says is in the center.

Sold for $200.00, 7 bidders.

Auction ends: Aug 24, 2011 19:32:32 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller jamiexmas*, Southbridge, Massachusetts, United States
Comments: Very good Brussels Application on machine net. It seems a little off in dimension for a collar, I wonder if it couldn’t also be a fan leaf. Although there’s no sign of an extension for the back guard stick at one side.  Whatever, the design is excellent and the work very well done. Condition looks very good, seller notes a few very small age stains.  Condition is very important in pieces like this since the machine made net doesn’t always hold up so well over the years. An impressive piece.

Sold for $163.50, 4 bidders.

Comments:
The workmanship in these motifs is exceptional, giving a real carved ivory appearance to the piece. The motifs have been reassembled, as is so common in so much Gros Point that has survived to this day. You can follow a few trends in the design, and it does look like it all came from the same original piece.

Comments: Star-shaped Maltese table cover – unfortunately no dimensions are given. It is made of several bands of different patterned lace, all of which are made to accommodate the star center.  Quite unusual. Needs a few seam attachments, but otherwise very good condition.

Comments: An interesting Milanese border with a square-shaped plaited bobbinlace mesh.  The flowers are large with interesting fillings, and a\the tape itself has evolved into more of a pieced lace. Some fraying on the upper edge, and I’m not sure if the lower edge is original. Parts of the lower motifs look a little cut, but that might just be a fold in the fabric. Overall it is in good shape.

Comments: A very beautiful length of Milanese in a very collectible size. The tape is not decorated much, mostly just a few holes, although occasional the tape expands into a more decorative connection.  The fillings are varied and interesting. The simple double brides are almost unnecessary, this stands quite well on its own. Seller cites a few loose brides.

Auction ends: Aug 25, 2011 14:00:23 PDT
Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: This Venise is very beautifully done. The clothwork is nicely decorated, and the cordonnet is quite crisp. They are also quite uniform, if this were French I’d expect more sculpting.  Note the joined rings, this is usually a sign of Belgian work and you find similar things in Point de Gaze. So I’ll go with a Zele technique.  Condition looks very good, I do see the occasional broken bride.  The design is extremely dense, and ‘m not sure what these were used for. It’s also difficult to tell if they are the same size from the photo.

Offered by: Ebay seller snakey03rr, Saint Louis, Missouri, United States
Comments: I really wish this seller would get rid of the light blue background for their white lace.  Hard to tell anything.  It’s a nice Honiton fallcap, snails/slugs period. An assembly of typical motifs, but they come together nicely for the purpose. There are no condition notes, but I can’t see anything obviously wrong.

Comments: Stunning. A Zele type needlelace of the very best kind. A few pinholes in the ground, but that’s of no consequence in a piece like this. It doesn’t even need the elaborate fillings that you sometimes find in pieces of this quality.

Lace for Sale: Point de France Flounce

UK dealers Joachim and Betty Mendes have so much wonderful lace for sale on their site http://www.mendes.co.uk/ that I could spend many posts on LaceNews describing it.  But for now let me talk about one particular piece they have just put up for sale, to be followed soon with a more formal interview.
The new piece is  No. F62.1 – see it on page http://www.mendes.co.uk/antique.lace.p.two.html about three quarters of the way down. It measures 54 cm x 340 cm, and shows the typical Louis XIV ‘candelabra’ symmetry of the late 17th century. Something this large would typically be used as a furnishing flounce. The picoted bride ground has a French hexagonal shape, and the small motifs are very flat with no buttonholed edges. The scrolling stems are rather isolated, difficult to follow in a definite pattern. All this is the sign of true French needlelace design which developed after the termination of the French monopoly in 1675, and represents a definite break with contemporary Italian work.
The war-like iconography associated with the Sun King is common in textiles of this era, demonstrating the might of the king. Louis himself sometimes appears in one of his various roles as Apollo, god of the sun in court ballets (see plate 226 in Levey’s “Lace, A History”). Louis was a highly trained dancer, and the formalism of the court was mirrored in contemporary dance. He does not appear in this lace flounce, but it does include figures of cannon and helmets.
This is a fascinating and remarkable lace – see the site for condition notes. Asking price is 6,800 GBP.

Size: no dimensions given.
Starting price: 30.00 GBP
Auction ends: Aug 19, 2011 06:04:23 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller garchick, Tunbridge Wells, United Kingdom
Comments: A good Carrickmacross collar, primarily applique on machine net.  Note the raised centers of some flowers.  There are a few embroidered stitches filling various spaces, in others a cut away bride filling.  Overall conditions seems good – there is fraying along some edges. Some motifs look a little puckered as if washing occurred at some point. It’s a nice example in a well-designed single piece.

Sold for 36.00 GBP, 2 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/4xg3m4c ANTIQUE LACE-CIRCA 1650’s, RARE ITALIAN BOBBIN LACE

Starting price: $295.00
Auction ends: Aug 20, 2011 08:25:50 PDT
Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: A very good border of Italian Milanese, later 17th century.  Beautifully ‘drawn’ designs in the tape, and well defined holes. Note how the tape actually passes behind some elements in the motifs. A lace like this doesn’t need any bride ground, it stands perfectly well on its own. The thicker edge looks original. The thinner edge is hard to tell, rather frayed, but could also be original. Otherwise condition is very good. An impressive piece.

  Sold for $295.00, 1 bidder.

Comments: A long length of reticella with a bold, well-worked tripartite design. It does a lot of a simple repeat of the main motif. I can’t seen anything obvious, other than the bottom edge cut right to the stitches. The condition is almost too good!
Such laces were made in the 16th and early 17th centuries, and survive in Italy, Greece and other nearby areas even until today. But this does have the look of an early piece.

$52.50, 2 bidders, reserve not met.

Comments: Flemish or Italian? The fairly plain borders would argue for Flemish. Theis is a fairly narrow piece, andathe smaller motifs also might be consistent with Flanders. I can’t relaly make out how the ground was made – for an Italian piece I’d expect a more obviously plaited mesh – almost a kat stitch. The smaller trefoil heads on the branches seem to lean Italian. But without looking more closely at the ground I guess I’d put this more Flemish than Italian.  Few stains, but overall good condition.

Comments: If you look at the symmetry of the tape, and the way it travels from one motif to the next at the top, it almost looks like an Abruzzi tape lace variation. But the little brides, some with leaves, are more a mark of Milan.  So I’d put this as North Italian, but a fairly coarse design. I don’t see any ovious condition problems – little fraying maybe in spots on the edge.

Comments: Looks like this is two separate pieces joned together, although they are quite similar. Note the transition in the lower edge, and the right part doesn’t seem quite so exuberant as the left side. But I’m a bothered by the technique. The ‘stems’, for lack of a better word, seem to have a loose buttonhole edge on both sides – this is something you see in Belgian laces. The French and Venetian Coraline and Point de Neige laces always make their ‘stems’ as flat, solid bands, with a close buttonhole cordonnet on both sides – or as in Coraline, with no edge at all (see the next piece for examples of what I mean). And the lower edge seems a little stiff. I’m wondering if this isn’t a later copy, maybe even Irish. Just speculation, but a test of the thread, linen or cotton, could tell a lot. Overall it’s a little frayed, but basically intact.

Comments: This is certainly unusual in that it has all been kept together. The founce is an impressive, wide piece of Duchesse de Bruxelles, later 19th century. The cuffs appear to match. I see a few small rings of needlelace used as fillings, but nothing more extensive.  There’s a large tear near the edge of the lace, as well as a few other holes, but looks repairable. Comments: Black silk guipure bobbinlace.  This is that indeterminate kind, rather thin open design with long tallies forming a tree structure. Never  could quite pin it down, somewhere in France; Le Puy or elsehwere.  It has a fascinating provenance, belonged to seller’s grandmother. From that information looks to be early 20th c. Comments: Basically this is a Duchesse de Bruxelles motif – I don’t think it has been extracted from something large. Needlelace elements are limited to jour fillings,  nicely done. Quite an unusual design, more anecklace than a dress front. There is quite a bit of raised work done over a halfstitch grounds.  A few loose elements and breaks in the halfstitching, all fairly minor.

Comments: Good small applique Carrickmacross collar with the typical looped edges. At least the bottom example was photographed from the wrong side.  The design is quite conventional, work OK. Seller cites a few pulls around the edges, doesn’t really look used.

Comments: A good Point de Gaze needlelace collar, no raised work. The long, narrow form with slight fullness in the back is quite nice. The needlelace fillings are not very ambitious,  but well done. I like how they are used to form a line separating the outer and inner border. Some unfortunate condition issues, damage to the reseau.

Comments: A good Duchesse de Bruges fan leaf, no needlelace elements. It has a crowded floral look that is closely allied with Duchesse de Bruxelles.  Seller cites a few small pulls, and needs repair where rear guardstick would have been attached. Pieces like this would usually have mother of pearl sticks, long gone now.

Comments: Seller has posted several of these lots, let me talk about this particular one. Three of the doileys (American vs English spelling)  are idential, the 4th shows slight variation. Note the needlelace ground and fillings in the centers of some motifs.  Needlelace was always used to ornament motifs in high-end Irish Crochet (see the August Lace of the Month discussion to see how needlelace statiches were similarly used in Tatting). Use for the entire ground I think is a later development, maybe early 20th century.  These are interesting examples, in very good condition.

Comments: It’s unclear why the seller calls this a veil. It is far too long and too narrow for a hat veil, and there are no discussion of how the piece terminates on either end. So I’ll call it a long flounce. The design repeat is fairly narrow and not too elaborate, but good for a ruffled edge. There are a few minor pinholes in the mesh from the photos, and the seller does not discuss any condition details.

Comments: Another long Chantilly border, again unclear why the seller calls it a veil. the closeup photos look quite good, but again, no details on condition in the writeup (I can see a few small pinholes in the ground).  The two part design with dots in the ground is more elaborate than the previous piece. The color seems quite deep black, probabaly indicating a Belgian piece.

Offered by: Lynda Perkin, Ebay seller discover4, London, United Kingdom
Comments: Is this sewn into a circle for a skirt? Hard to tell. Belgian needlelace applique on machine net. The motifs have a lot of subtle ornamentation. It’s an impressive piece, perfect for the purpose, and the drape is lovely. There appears to be only one hole in the net and a few minor pulls, otherwise good condition. The extra net on the bottom is confusing, not certain of the purpose.  I am wondering how the top differs from the bottom to make the stated dimensions – the pattern seems to be so architecturally vertical that it’s hard to see how it happens. it would be nice to have a better look at the side finishings.

Comments: How amazing! There are no roses in this piece – very refreshing for later 19thc Belgian needlelace. Parts of this are a kind of needlelace guipure – almost a Zele. The rest has the regular Point de Gaze reseau.  The fillings are varied and well used. There are number of small holes in the reseau, otherwise looks in very good condition.

Comments: A good piece of later 19th century Alençon, and as I always do with pieces like this, I wish there were more. It includes extensive areas of fine fillings. It has a regular reseau, not brides tortilleé. I can just barely see the horsehair in the picots in spots on the lower edge.  Seller cites one or two small holes, but overall it looks in very good condition.

Comments: A very good fallcap, probably Beds. I’m a little thrown by the elaborate ground to the guipure elements, and there are no florals which could reasonably be expected in a piece this complex.. It might be French, sort of a Cluny. The joins to the lappets are very narrow – unusual.  There’s no dicussion of condition, but I can’t see anything particularly wrong. Especially in the narrow join, although only one is shown.

Comments: I’m putting these two listings together because they are so closely related. The first one appears to be a Wallone type pillow, with a separate base that rotates the pillow. The stand is a narrow telescoping quite typical of Brugges. The second pillow seems to be a plain round cushion, bigger than the first. The telescoping stand is a commonly seen variation.  I attach two postcards illustrating the use of some of this equipment.  I couldn’t find one with the second stand and a plain round pillow – there might be a base to it.
Condition is pretty worn on everything.
I have no idea what ‘Lierre’ in the title has to do with bruges’, also in the title, in the context of these listings.  I’m writing the seller to get more information.

Comments: An impressive cover – one could probably track down the source of the motifs with a little effort. the bobbinlace border is Genoese, in excellent condition. There is obviously damage to many of the lacis squares, and I’d leave it alone if I had the choice.  This needs to be carefully conserved and mounted. I’m wondering what happened to the lower left corner in the thumbnail below, and the entire left edge doesn’t really match the right border.  Maybe this was originally a longer piece?

Comments: A very good Honiton handkerchief with finely worked thistle, tulip, fern, and other flower designs. It appears to have a needlelace ground although the photos aren’t close enough to get a lot of detail. I do find the design to be a little scattered, and the attachment to the cloth could be better. But this is definitely a higher end piece. Condition seems very good, I don’t see any obvious problems.

Comments: A very good Milanese grounded tape lace. The photos aren’t close enough to tell what kind of stitch the ground is. It almost looks like a needlelace – it’s an important point but I can’t really tell from the photos. This is an impressive piece, more of a pieced lace than a tape lace. I’m thinking early 18th century. Apart from one join it is in very good condition.

Comments: Buratto with colored silk embroidery from the Jane Page collection. This should have a leno weave base, but photos aren’t close enough to tell. The colors, are still bright, and the greens still look fairly green. There are some fairly clumsey darning repairs to the ground. It’s a treat to see the piece in color after knowing it from the “450 years of Lace” black & white photo.

Comments: A very good Honiton handkerchief. Little on the slugs/snails side, but overall quite nice. Note the unusual ‘brides’ made of tallies.  The monogram is a little stained, and there’s one stain in the lower left corner. But I can’t see any damage from the photos. A very nice looking piece.

Comments: There is no gimp in this piece which would put it on the Valenciennes side, here iwth a cinq trou ground. But laces at this period in time were made both in france and Flanders, so if ther ewere a gimp I’d call it Mechlin, even with the unusual ground.  And the work has a slightly looser feel than a contemporary Valenciennes. People faced with this dilema usually just call things ‘Flanders’, which is perfectly fine. It’s a fairly simple deisng, nicely worked.  One join, a few small breaks, but overall very good condition. Exceptional length.

Comments: Good Duchesse handkerchief, no needlelace, which typically puts it in the Bruges category. Nice raised work on top of a half-stitch background in many motifs.  The design is not particularly complex, but works well for the piece. I don’t see any condition issues from the photos.

Comments: One of those mysterious probably Flemish probably 18th century definitely bobbin laces. The tape loops are a decorative ground element, and also mirror that behavior as the raised edges of some motifs.  There are a few connecting picoted brides.  The top edge in the photo appears original, the bottom is an engrelure added later. An impressive lace about which very little is known. I can’t see anything wrong in the condition, all looks very good.

Comments: Eastern Mediterranean knotted lace with small roundels linked by a bride ground. The ground is quite unusual, but looks consistent with a knotted stitch. It’s only speculation, but it could be Armenian, which uses a specific kind of knotted stitch. I don’t see any condition issues.

Comments: Good Bruges bertha with an unusual square bride ground.  There is a photo of the whole thing but it is so washed out that I’m putting up this detailed one.  The motifs are well worked, but fairly conventional. Overall condition is hard to access – seller cites some stains, but I don’t see any serious damage to the lace itself.

Comments: Very good border of Duchesse de Bruxelles.  3.75″ width is fairly narrow for a piece like this, which means the motifs are quite finely worked. Note the elaborate multilayered rose petals in the needlelace, and the overall repeat breaks out of the standard for this kind of lace.  Some condition issues, a few breaks and holes especially at right edge. A few tiny holes in some of the point de gaze ground. Seller cites some age discoloration.

Comments: I’m very much hoping this piece isn’t as yellow as it looks in the photo. It’s a very good piece of older ñanduti, with lots of variation in the roundels and a good center grid of woven crosses.  The border of the center looks like spiders. Comments: There’s been quite a bit of email traffic on this piece – people trying to figure out what kind of lace this is. Not to mention what exactly the whole piece is. The insect in the center I think is a butterfly, symbol of the resurrection, and the angles or cherubs in at the edges might speak to a church piece. The center looks a little italian, along the lines of Milan figural lace, with a needlelace ground.  The border seems to have been made for the shape; I can’t see a join but it’s got to be there somewhere. Looks a little like a coarse Beveran, but with a strange ground. Following the Italian line of thought I looked at Ricci Old Italian lace and see similar heavy continuous laces with figures and the same ground, starting with plate 314 in volume 2 on bobbinlace.  They are labled Abruzzi – Pescocostanzo, 18th century so that’s my guess.  I think the center part is much later – 19th c. Looks in excellent shape.

Comments: Very good border of standard Blonde de Cæn. Looks like it was a ruffled border most of its life.  I also like the unusual gimp work in the flower centers at the edge of the piece. Condition appears very good – and this is a lace dating pre-1840 (usually) which is not known to survive well. Seller cites some minor defects, but I couldn’t spot them from the photos.

Comments: Maybe Flemish. The large flowerheads are similar to contemporary Italian flat points, and even Gros Points.  I think and Italian piece would have more elaborate borders.  Actually, something about the spiral terminations on some to some of the leaves almost says English Devon.  Very good condition for the age.

Comments: These were made in pairs, but even a single survivor in good shape is remarkable. Italian examples of corraline are a bit more irregular in the ground and have a simpler edge – so I’d call this Point de France.  Both Italian and French examples have a symmetry around the midline, present in this piece. Looks in excellent condition.

Comments: All the elements look like good Italian laces, and they could all have been put together at the same time. I’m a little bothered by the sort of ‘spiderweb’ bases of the semicircles in the needlelace. And some of the bobbinlace looks more 18th century in design. So I’m thinking this might be a little later piece, made up who knows when. There’s a lot going on here. Does have some very old repairs, prety minor. Linen seems cut at the top edge. Wish it were longer.

For further information about the 2012 symposium, TSA membership, and to submit a proposal, please visit: http://www.textilesociety.org/symposia_2012.htm

All persons submitting proposals for participation in the 2012 symposium must be TSA members in good standing for 2011 at the time of submission. Comments: Good Mundillo with a worked piece of Torchon lace with the original bobbins.  Looks like there might be some padding under the pattern. Spanish, not sure of the age – this type of equipment is sold in Spain today. Looks in very good condition, and the mundillo is quite nicely made.

A little unusual to find a circular edging of Maltese. This one has some nice Guipure figures, and a plaited leave ground variation that includes some intersecting threads. Seller sites a few stains and pinhole openings, but overall good condition.

Good Duchesse handkerchief, no needlelace insertions. Some raised work on a half-stitch background in the flowers, with simple bride ground.  The pattern seems mainly to be grapes and leaves.  Cloth has a good embroidered ‘S’ monogram. Som slight staining, few pinhole openings, basically very good condition.

  Sold for $125.00, 4 bidders.

Comments:
Very good ‘stole’ with large, lappet-type ends – nice combination of guipure and leaves quite close in to the motifs. Can’t see what the center part looks like from the photos. The work is excellent on this piece. The outer edges look a little ragged, or maybe it’s just some wrinkling.

$45.00, 1 bidder, reserve not met.

Good collar of Duchesse de Bruxelles, with  point de gaze inserts. Note the centerrose which does not have any needlelace ground. A little raised work on halfstitch in some of the bobbinlace motifs, otherwise not much raised work. Seller sites some age discoloration, otherwise very good condition.

   Sold for $59.00, 3 bidders.

Comments:
This is a fun piece, and the adaptation is very well done. I’m not terribly wild about the edge finish used. The tapework and fillings of the bobbinlace are excellent. If you stare at it long enough you see two diagonal join lines running from the upper right to lower left – I’m guessing it was a fairly narrow piece cut into three and joined together. You can follow the design fairly well in the middle segment.   The triangles around the edge are formed from snippets of the original piece. Seller sites overall good condition, just a few minor openings.

$174.50, 2 bidders, reserve not met.

Ebay seller MYST1033, Baltimore, Maryland, United States
Comments:
This beautiful piece of lace has been done to death by ostentatious ornamentation. I’d be surprised if that was the original intent. A tragedy, beacause the lovely, high quality Point d’Angleterre bobbin/needlelace stands very well on its own. Never put a piece of white lace on a white net background.   The carved MOP sticks are quite nice, but rather damaged at the ends. Lace is discolored where glued to the sticks, but from the pictures, it looks in basically good condition. I’d recommend trying to detach the lace and have it cleaned. It would be much better displayed as a free fan leaf.

  Sold for $416.00, 10 bidders.

Comments:
Garments like this tend to go for a lot and this one won’t be an exception. The motifs are quite large with some raised work. I think those are Clones knots on the ground, hard to tell if they are exactly right. But the whole thing seems a little weighed down, and the bell sleeves don’t seem to go well with the straight line of the body. It’s a good looking piece in very good condition.

Sold for $975.00, 9 bidders.

This piece really looks white, and there are no pictures of it laid flat or of what the front ends look like. It does have the very dense areas of leaves – six to an intersection, which is a higher quality mark. Seller says it looks unused.

This fitted garment is unusual for Maltese. Looks in very good condition, no damage I can see. Wish there were a photo of the front. This is a much cleaner, simpler piece than the previous collar.

Ebay seller discover4, London, United Kingdom
Comments:
This and the following Maltese handkerchief were offered on Ebay before, but did not sell. I’m glad they are still around to talk about. This Honiton handkerchief is definitely a cut above (but not too far from) the snails/slugs of the later 19th century. Motifs are well worked, and it has a dense flower-garden appearance.  Attachment to the linen is well done.  Seller cites a few minor pulls, and need for laundering (please don’t throw it in the washing machine), but overall quite good condition.

Sold for 95.50 GBP, 4 bidders.

An impressive looking piece – wonderfully complex ground and good guipure motifs. The work seems to be quite fine in contrast to the normally sized Maltese pieces.  Seller cites a few pulls and discoloration, but overall looks in very good condition. Note the added detail of the leaves fitted in a circle around the center cloth. In fashion, couture emphasizes detail – beautifully found in this piece.

Comments:
Duchesse de Bruxelles fan, bobbin with needlelace inserts. Mother of pearl sticks. Lace is fairly standard – hard to see details because closeups are on a light colored background.  Wish more of the needlelace was visible – looks interesting. Condition looks very good, both sticks and lace. It’s also not a particularly large piece.

   Sold for $399.99, 1 bidder.

Duchesse de Bruges dress front collar.  Nice design of bows.  No needlelace fillings, some raised elements in the bow ribbons. A few broken threads, no damage otherwise.  Rather off-color, maybe around the neck? Hard to tell from the photos.

   Did not sell.

It’s pretty amazing when you can identify the maker, date, and origin (school at Cork) of Irish Crochet. The lower collar looks especially interesting. The note with the upper one says it has been laundered hundreds of times. Doesn’t look it.  In fact both pieces look in relatively good shape. The top one seems to have a needlemade ground. The seller is offering quite a few items by this maker over a few days, be sure to take a look at them all.  A good archive of the products of the Cork school, not just crochet.

   Sold for $35.00, 1 bidder.
