Comments: Very good design on this Point de Gaz border – I just wish it were longer. Quality is quite high, and the raised petals on the roses show some though to actual design. Offered by:
Ebay seller chair29, Fairhaven, MA, United States
Comments: I’d call this a parasol cover, although there isn’t a hole in the center as expected. Might be a table cover? Duchesse de Bruxelles, some damage to the net in the needlelace inserts. Quite a dense design. It’s a little puzzling, almost looks like the bobbinlace has been photographed from the wrong side. But I think the raised rose petals are correct – hard to tell, need closer photos. Other than the needlelace ground, it looks in good shape.

   Sold for $295.00, 1 bidder.

Comments: We’ve been having quite a run on Chantilly bonnet veils in the past few weeks – this is the 3rd rectangular one to come up since July 8th.One might think the design is a bit too dense to see through, but all three examples are quite similar in this regard. Nice vertical design which looks well draped. Very good condition, no defects noted.

Offered by: Ebay seller CLARISSA32, Horncastle, Lincolnshire, United Kingdom
Comments: This is only the 2nd Special Ebay Alert I’ve ever done. Up for sale is a set of astonishing Valenciennes lappets – piece like this are usually dated 1715-1725. You cannot see the join at the top, but the total length seems reasonable for two lappets of standard length.  The ground is the kind of ‘5-hole’ mesh that’s just one step later than the fond d’neige. From what I can see the condition looks excellent, but it definitely needs more photos. Wonderfully complex design with line-drawing delineation. It’s of my favorite laces, and I’ll make an exception to my standard practice of not gushing. This is an important piece.

Sold for 877.00 GBP, 8 bidders.

Lace Exhibition: Love Lace – July 30, 2011 to April 2012

Third Powerhouse Museum International Lace Award Winner’s Exhibition
To be held as part of Sydney Design 2011
Dates: July 30, 2011 to April 2012
Sponsor: The Powerhouse Museum (Lace Study Center)
500 Harris Street Ultimo, PO Box K346 Haymarket, Sydney NSW 1238, Australia
Location: tbd
Web site
: http://www.powerhousemuseum.com/lovelace/

Information on this competition was posted last March on LaceNews. I’m giving an update because more information on the exhibition is now available at their web site, including many classes and events. This is a major event, and a publication is available at http://www.powerhousemuseum.com/lovelace/index.php/book. You can also download an app at http://www.powerhousemuseum.com/lovelace/index.php/the-app that will let you scan labels on individual items in the exhibition for detailed information – of course you actually have to go to the exhibition.

Love Lace is part of Sydney Design, 2011 and is a juried exhibition of the competition entrants. Seven hundred entries were originally received. A prize of $20,000 AUD goes to the winner, and 5 other prizes of $4,000 AUD each will be awarded (fashion and accessories, traditional techniques, built environment, digital multimedia, and student work).  130 works by 134 artists from 20 countries will downselected, and the artists developed their works from June 2010 to January 2011.  Winners will be announced at the opening of the exhibition. In contrast to the two previous competitions in 1997 and 2001 which invited ‘openwork fabric’ structures, the 2011 event expands the concept to ‘openwork structures’. The 2001 exhibition catalog can be downloaded at https://lacenews.net/2011/03/20/exhibitions-powerhouse-museum-international-lace-award-july-30-to-august-14-2011/.

Contemporary lace contests and exhibitions have been held in several countries over the years, but with a narrow aim at the textile and lace communities. In 2007 the broader concept started to go mainstream in the art world with the New York Museum of Arts and Design “Radical Lace & Subversive Knitting”. Reviews of that exhibition were not always complimentary, but one wonders what effect that event had on the current emphasis on lace in fashion.  Love Lace will let us see how artistic thinking in this area has evolved since 2007.

The judging criteria are:

  • visual impact
  • originality and creativity
  • innovation in design, materials or techniques
  • skill in execution
  • a conceptual interpretation of place

Judges include:

  • Architect Chris Bosse, Partner/Director, Laboratory for Visionary Architecture, Sydney
  • Fashion designer, Akira Isogawa, Sydney
  • Lace and fashion historian Anne Kraatz, Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes, Paris
  • Peter McNeil, Professor of Design History, University of Technology, Sydney
  • Lace maker, author and historian Rosemary Shepherd OAM, Sydney
  • Curator Lindie Ward, Powerhouse Museum, Sydney

The International Lace Award seeks to encourage contemporary design and challenge conventional notions of lace and its application in the areas of fashion, the built environment and digital multimedia.”

Starting price: $.99
Auction ends:

Offered by:
Ebay seller heartstrings, Gurley, AL, United States
Comments: Photographs aren’t very good, but it has a handmade feel. I could be wrong – but I note that 5 bidders are already taking a chance on it.  It’s a semi-circular Chantilly bonnet veil, with a dense pattern of dots in the center, with a heavy floral border around the edge.  One would put a ribbon through the holes on the flat edge to use as a drawstring. Looks in very good condition.

Comments:
Belgian needlelace fan mount. Has a kind of Venise/Zele look, although the clothwork is more open like Point de Gaze. Note the bride ground in combination with the reseau. Some very small holes, very minor. It’s an interesting design with a unique combination of techniques. Does seems a bit heavy for a fan.

Comments:
Brussels application on machine net, a good wide, long flounce. Unfortunately quite a few small holes, and maybe some small repairs in the net. Mainly bobbin made motifs with some needlelace fillings. A good design for something this size – the motifs are fair large and a little standard. But overall it works well.

    Sold for $355.00 5 bidders.

Offered by:
Ebay seller adtjmd, RED VELVET BENCH, United States
Comments:
Val de Gand handkerchief. Despite the Valenciennes name, it is actually a pieced lace with a unique square mesh ground, three plaited threads to a side. The lacemakers produced many identical motifs of very high quality and dense clothwork. These were later arranged and filled in with the ground – a good method of speeding up production. These laces can be extremely impressive. The quality of this piece is very good (as is the condition).

  Sold for $124.11, 4 bidders.

Offered by:

Comments:
Bertha of  Duchesse, rather on the Bruges side. Note the well worked motifs, with a simple gimp outlining many of them. No needlelace in this piece. I think it works quite well. A few spots, but I don’t see any major damage.  The tiny looped picots on the brides are unusual.

  Offer of $190.00 accepted.

Starting price: 4.99 GPB
Auction ends: Jul 19, 2011 13:45:44 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller *-rosebud-*, Yorkshire Dales, United Kingdom
Comments: Belgian needlelace collar, one name in an old catalog is ‘point à la Rose. I’m showing a page from the catalog in my collection next to the thumbnail for the Ebay listing. The catalog doesn’t have a date, but it is Belgian, and seems to be around 1900. Note the similarities in the outer edging of both pieces.
My only issue with this piece is that the motifs look a bit shrunken and the brides and edging not quite crisp. Probably a sign of washing.

Sold for 62.00 GBP, 9 bidders.

Auction ends: Jul 19, 2011 16:44:59 PDT
Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: Good Carrickmacross applique on machine net shawl. Lots of shamrocks in the design, and note the typical large loop edging and fillings of needlerun embroidery. This is the sort of thing I think about when Kate’s wedding dress was described – although there the motifs where not cloth, but cut from machine lace and appliqued onto satin. This piece has a few tiny holes in the net, but overall good condition.

   Sold for $117.50, 3 bidders.

Starting price: $45.00 with reserve
Auction ends: Jul 19, 2011 16:47:18 PDT
Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: Interesting piece. Really too big for a handkerchief. It looks like the edging was made for the piece, that is, not cut on the inner edge. But the join is quite complex and may be hiding something. Beautiful work on the lace, probably mid 19th century (although if it weren’t for the provenance I’d say it could be 20th c). From the collection of the Duchess De Berry (I think this is the one who died in 1870, her possessions were recently sold at Sotheby’s in London). Very good condition, I can’t find anything wrong.

$78.00, 3 bidders, Reserve not met.

Starting price: $24.99
Auction ends: Jul 19, 2011 18:06:54 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller adtjmd, RED VELVET BENCH, United States
Comments: There’s a nice video on the Ñanduti lace museum where you can see pieces of this quality, http://tinyurl.com/6gecfqg. Unfortunately this one has some cut areas on the sides. It does look like it was assembled from several pieces. These older Ñanduti works are always quite impressive.

   Sold for $44.00, 3 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/6kagj2w ANTIQUE LACE- CIRCA 17-18THC. FLEMISH LACE copy
Size: 12″ x 74-75″
Starting price: $45.00 with reserve
Auction ends: Jul 19, 2011 18:40:14 PDT
Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: Probably a Flemish piece, drawing on the late 17th century Milan tradition. It might also be Milano, note the fairly large motifs which aren’t always typical of Flanders. Almost regular square mesh, also a Milan characteristic. Then again, the header and footer are not elaborate, which is more Flemish. Ultimately it depends on the fineness of the thread. Condition looks very good, this is a beautiful piece.

Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: Large square shawl of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net. The design is not very ambitious, the decoration is mainly in the corners. I only see a few needlelace rings filling some of the flowers.  A few tiny holes in the net, otherwise very good condition.

$206.50, 4 bidders, Reserve not met.

Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: Large triangular shawl, applique on machine net. I had a talk with Maria about this, it’s probably a muslin applique with some needlewoven fillings in the net. A really beautiful piece, in very good condition. I don’t see any defects from the photos although seller cites a few tiny repairs.

Offered by: Ebay seller baraud, Newton Abbot, United Kingdom
Comments: Duchesse de Bruxelles bertha.  No raised work on the bobbinlace. The needlelace raised petal roses have some small windows in the petals. five repeats of the design. Whole thing looks a bit thrown together, not a very ambitious design. Condition appears very good, seller sites very minor loose thread and stains.

Comments: Carrickmacross guipure handkerchief with documentation giving the name of the maker. Wish there were more on this, for example exactly where it was made. It would be good to know if this were a professional piece, or a hobbiest’s work. Nice design, some storage stains, otherwise very good condition.  Note the large rings throughout the pattern, not just on the edges.

Offered by: Carolyn Forbes, Ebay seller heartnsoul1, NEW ENGLAND, United States
Comments: I think it’s a bonnet veil, very similar to the one shown on LaceNews Ebay Alerts for July 3, 2011. It has a rather elaborate design, finished on all four sides. The top finish is quite narrow. Looks like there’s a horizontal join about halfway down – this would be expected and there are probably more. Condition looks very good, I can’t find any obvious damage.

Comments: Good border of Carrickmacross guipure. Note the double picots on the brides, and the typical looped picot outer edge.  A few needlelace stitches fill some empty spaces in the design.  Nicely worked, good condition, just wish it were longer.

   Sold for $41.00, 2 bidders.

Comments: Duchesse bertha with 7 needlelace inserts. Single raised petal roses, no raised work in the bobbinlace.  Item is in good condition, I do see a few spots but no holes or bride damage. Design elements are fairly large, sort of a Bruges Bloemwerk technique. The whole effect is quite bold.

   Sold for $36.00, 6 bidders.

Offered by: Ebay seller aunteri, California, United States
Comments: The note accompanying this piece states it was brought to the US after the War. Doesn’t say which war. Wish they had a picture of the original box, which apparently comes with the piece. It’s a Duchesse bertha with needlelace inserts. No raised work on the bobbin or needlelace that I can see. No raised petals in the roses. The work is quite light and open. Seems to be a slight gap in the pattern on the lefthand side of the neck edge, but it doesn’t look like anything’s missing. Overall very good condition.

Comments: Long, wide, beautiful Brussels Application on machine net. The motifs are all needlelace.  No elaborate fillings, and the work is quite flat, but it has an impressive presentation. A few minor holes, but overall very good condition.

Comments: Inscribed R. Drew, Dec. 19. 1878, which is absolutely remarkable. The lace is well worked with some nice ring fillings. Comments: English sample with reticella rosettes. Each of the 4 rows has one central motif flanked by two of another design. Second row is unfinished.  Difficult to tell if this is a period piece or a later copy. It would have to be compared with known examples. It’s not a large piece, meaning the work is particularly delicate. Whenever it was made, it’s an extremely interesting piece, in very good condition.

Comments: I’d agree with the Milanese attribution, 3rd quarter of the 17th century. Milanese is also known for elaborate headers and footers. The top edge of this piece looks like it might be a replacement – hard to tell without further closeups. A bold design without brides, very good condition.

Comments: Long length of a Corraline needlelace. It hasn’t quite developed into a Point d’Neige variation (Punto Neve in Italian). But the small raised work elements definitely point that way. Difficult to tell if this was cut from another piece – usually you can trace a pattern of meandering coral-like traces.  Condition appears excellent. It’s always difficult to find a lace like this in good shape. Maybe 3rd quarter of the 17th century.

   Sold for $249.00, 3 bidders.

Size: 74″ x 147″
Starting price: $3,800.00 Buy-it-Now
Auction ends: 18 days 17 hours
Offered by: Ebay seller oldthreads, NATURALLY BEAUTIFUL, FRANKLINVILLE, N.Y., United States
Comments: Comes with 12 matching napkins.  Needlelace figural design and a delicate bride ground – I’d say Belgian.  The figures have some shading in their drapery, the flowers are mostly sold pieces with veins for dimension. The design holds together quite well. Condition appears very good – seller does say that it was washed and pressed.  Seller is also quite enthusiastic about condition, although in a piece this big it’s easy to miss the occasional break.

   Unsold.

The LaceNews Channel on YouTube

LaceNews has just set up a video channel on YouTube, at
http://www.youtube.com/user/lacenews
The main business at the moment is to organize all the lacemaking videos now on YouTube and put them into topic-specific playlists. At least I’ll try to get them all, there seem to be hundreds, and bringing some order to all this will be quite a challenge. This is also an opportunity for LaceNews to go more into lacemaking techniques, since so many of the videos have that focus. I also have a few old movies that I’ve purchased over the years and will be getting those digitized and downloaded.
I will also be trying to do more in-person interviews in the future, and this is a very good place to display that kind of information.

http://tinyurl.com/64ozbvb superb rare black honiton lace shawl/mantilla +birds.
Size: 17″ x 44″
Starting price: 25.00 GPB
Auction ends: Jul 15, 2011 13:16:18 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller reddolly123, nottingham, Nottinghamshire, United Kingdom
Comments: Interesting narrow honiton shawl, with unfortunate serious damage to both ends. The black color is unusual, and might be a later dye job. The lace has a rose and thistle design with a few birds. Snails/slugs period, with what looks to be a bobbin bride ground.

Sold for 26.00 GBP, 2 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/6yzl68d EXQUISITE VERY LARGE BRUSSELS LACE COLLAR
Size: 37.5″ inside edge, 82″ outside edge, 6.5″ lace width
Starting price: $49.95 with reserve
Auction ends: Jul 15, 2011 18:25:49 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller wiselum, Walnut Creek, CA, United States
Comments: Duchesse de Bruxelles, needlelace has single raised petals in the roses, with windows worked in. Bobbinlace doesn’t have much raise work and looks rather on the Bruges side.  One spot in one photo, otherwise very good condition.

$102.50, 4 bidders, reserve not met.

http://tinyurl.com/6ys64ws Punto in Aria needlelace panel c1650
Size: 20 cm x 38 cm
Starting price: 325.00 GBP
Auction ends:Jul 17, 2011 01:46:55 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller lunnantiques, London, London, United Kingdom
Comments: One shouldn’t discount the possiblity of early 20th century Aemilia Ars.  Or even an India manufacture – they did surprisingly good imitations of the Punto in Aria laces.  The form is strange, and it doesn’t really look like it has the wear for such an early piece. The technique just doesn’t ring a bell. I don’t see a date worked into the lace, and the seller doesn’t give any clues about attribution. It is a nice looking piece, but a mystery.

Sold for 325.00 GBP, 1 bidder.

Comments: Pag needlelace doesn’t come up that often, adn this is a nice example. The seller is from Croatia, probably a fairly recent piece. Condition is excellent.

Size: 12.5″ wide x 13.5″ high
Starting price: $14.99
Auction ends: Jul 17, 2011 17:02:09 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller dorothygails, Thru The Garden Gate & Beyond The Red Door, United States
Comments: Irish crochet dress front with what looks like Clones knots in the ground, and a Rose of Sharon pattern on the neckline. Scattered motifs, well worked, but the design is a little disjoint.  Very white condition may indicate bleaching. I don’t see any damage from the photos.

   Sold for $17.50, 3 bidders.

Size: 39″ neckline, 76″ outside edge, 5″ wide lace
Starting price: $49.99
Auction ends: Jul 17, 2011 18:10:52 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller adtjmd, RED VELVET BENCH, United States
Comments: Very good Point de Gaze bertha. Single and double layered raised petals on the roses. The needlelace fillings are excellent and extensive. It has a regular repeat of 5 segments around the piece. Condition appears excellent, seller notes n ecru color, but it’s hard to judge from the photos. Very nice example of a fairly common form.

   Sold for $355.00, 9 bidders.

Starting price: $49.99
Auction ends: Jul 17, 2011 18:19:09 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller adtjmd, RED VELVET BENCH, United States
Comments: Very good Brussels application on machine net. Bobbin motifs include a bow design with needlelace ring fillings. This is a little unusual and quite nice – and note the dots in the net itself.  Very good condition, with some age discoloration. Machine netting often suffers over the years in this kind of lace. Just wish it were longer.

   Sold for $333.50, 11 bidders.

Offered by: Ebay seller adtjmd, RED VELVET BENCH, United States
Comments: Interesting set of Point de Gaze cuffs.  The raised petal work on the trumpet-like flowers is quite unusual. An impressive looking set. A few small holes and pulls in the ground, but fairly minor. See the next itme for what  the matching collar.

   sold for $128.50, 8 bidders.

Starting price: $49.99
Auction ends: Jul 17, 2011 18:46:08 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller adtjmd, RED VELVET BENCH, United States
Comments: Very nice that this and the previous item have survived together. The collar has the same ‘morning glory’ or whatever flower design with good detailing on various leaf and flower elements. Again some damage to the net.

   sold for $127.50, 8 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/5sbkmg3 LG HM Antique Vtg BRUSSELS POINT DE GAZE LACE Collar #2
Size: 5″ at widest lace, neckline 38.5″ outside 46″
Starting price: $49.99
Auction ends: Jul 17, 2011 19:12:01 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller adtjmd, RED VELVET BENCH, United States
Comments: Good collar of Duchesse and needlelace motifs, quite large and bold. I think the inner edge of the piece around the neck looks a bit discolored. Technique seems quite good, but the design itself is a bit crowded for my taste. This appears to be the same piece shown on the April 3rd Ebay Alerts on LaceNews, but under a different seller.

   Sold for $102.50, 4 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/68kt8bn VENETIAN NEEDLELACE Ca 1670
Size: 3″ x 35″
Starting price: $10.00 with reserve
Auction ends: Jul 18, 2011 11:02:43 PDT
Offered by: Anne Swift, Ebay seller eastayton, London. England, United Kingdom
Comments: Gros Point doesn’t come up that often, and when it has often been remade by assembling small pieces from several different originals. This one seems to have some intact flowing vine structure around the center, and the brides look quite nice. But it doesn’t hold together all the way through.  Wish there were closer photos to examine the stitches. I’ve maintained for a long time that everything you ever want to know about needlelace you can find out by looking at a good piece of Gros Point.

$61.00, 3 bidders, reserve not met.

http://tinyurl.com/5tgxr9j *Antique Belgian Bobbin Lace Long FIGURAL Panel *
Size: ~10″ x ~51″
Starting price: $9.99
Auction ends: Jul 18, 2011 11:48:53 PDT
Offered by: Josephine A Rosenthal, Ebay seller jaruk, Worcester., Worcs., United Kingdom
Comments: Figural bobbinlace with a large mesh hexagonal bobbin ground. Could be Belgian, although work like this was also done in Italy. Probably Belgian – the clothwork is quite dense, but still uses variations in large areas to indicate textural detail. Almost like a closely woven cloth. No gimp thread that I can see. Thread might be linen. It has a number of broken brides.

   Sold for $45.00, 3 bidders.
