Ebay Alerts! Eight items – April 28, 2011

http://tinyurl.com/3wqheqk Tabouret Traditionnel Dentelière Carreau Art Populaire
Size: 26 cm long, 16.0 cm wide, 20 cm tall
Starting price: 10.50 EUR
Auction ends: May 01, 2011 11:34:05 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller barrioux, SERMENTIZON, Auvergne, France
Comments: Very similar to the lacemaker’s stool sold by this seller as Ebay item 120707667516 (See Ebay Alerts for April 14, 2010).  This one appears to be in very good shape, solidly constructed.  Seller says it is typical of pieces from Auvergne.

Sold for 10.50 EUR, 1 bidder.

http://tinyurl.com/3ee4xta ANTIQUE HANDMADE WIDE BERTHA IRISH CROCHET LACE COLLAR
Size: 16″ inside, 38″ outside, 6″ wide
Starting price: $195.00 Buy-it-Now
Auction ends: May 01, 2011 14:04:54 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller twist-in-time, Philadelphia / DFW, United States
Comments: Good Irish Crochet collar with single knot on the brides. Design is a bit confused and not entirely symmetric. But I like some of the motifs with their raised elements. Condition looks good, little loose piece near the right endpoint of the inner collar edge. Nothing serious.

   Did not sell.

http://tinyurl.com/43ozb68 ANTIQUE LACE-C. 17TH-18THC. BINCHE LACE
Size: 43″ x 2-3/4″
Starting price: $195.00
Auction ends: May 01, 2011 16:56:39 PDT
Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: Early 18th century; this kind of lace is very hard to attribute. Note the almost ‘5-hole’ ground, sometimes seen in Antwerp laces, and used with finer thread, in mid 18th c Valenciennes. You also see it in early brussels laces, with the same rather scattered, disconnected motifs. Add some small tallies, switch to a finer thread and a snowflake ground and  you have what today is called ‘Binche’. Although we really don’t know much about the original products of Binche vs Valenciennes. This is such a difficult lace to place that many authors avoid it altogether, or just call it some kind of Brussels or Flemish lace. Someone should really try to nail down a history.

   Sold for $195.00, 1 bidder.

Size: 24″ x 3″
Starting price: $45.00 with reserve
Auction ends: May 01, 2011 17:06:57 PDT
Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: If it weren’t for the ground, I’d say this is a 17th century Flemish bobbinlace. Interesting, and quite a puzzle.

$100.00, 3 bidders, reserve not met.

http://tinyurl.com/43rq4fr ANTIQUE LACE-EARLY WIDE BOBBIN LACE

Starting price: $45.00 with reserve
Auction ends: May 01, 2011 17:46:39 PDT
Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: Another very difficult one to place. I’m thinking this might be a freehand lace, although the ground is a little unusual. Ricci shows similar things from Pescocostanzo. And some of the Piédmontais designs in François Monneret’s books aren’t too far off. But most of those have a kind of kat stitch ground.

$81.00, 2 bidders, reserve not met.

http://tinyurl.com/3zc86p2 ANTIQUE LACE-BRUSSELS LACE DRESS FRONT W/POINT DE GAZE
Size: 14.5″ x 6″
Starting price: $75.00
Auction ends: May 01, 2011 17:52:06 PDT
Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: A better than average Belgian lace front. This would have come with cuffs and a collar piece, but it stands well by itself.  Nice fine bobbin motifs, and the needlelace is extensive with interesting fillings.  A few spots, but overall good condition.

   Sold for $79.00, 2 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/3g36nbc US-antique Maltese duchess brussels lace table topper
Size: 48″ x 48″
Starting price: $9.99
Auction ends: May 01, 2011 19:38:36 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller atticcon, Birmingham, Alabama, United States
Comments: Sellers are really digging themselves into a hole with the description of this one. Let’s just call it Brussels Duchesse. A real wild flower garden of a piece, looks very tossed together with some symmetry elements, but not entirely consistent throughout.  Looks somewhat deliberate, but a puzzle. A little damage to some of the needlelace, but overall in good condition.

   Sold for $921.00, 18 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/3l6hyh9 VJ-antique Belgian ROSALINE bobbin lace trim-2@ 3×11″
Size: each 3″ x 11″
Starting price: $9.99
Auction ends: May 01, 2011 19:52:57 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller atticcon, Birmingham, Alabama, United States
Comments: Two nice rosaline perlé pieces, which seem to be complete, not fragments. Perhaps meant for cuffs. The pearls are needlelace rings, which is a bit unusual, and gives this lace a nice, crisp appearance.  Look in very good shape.

   Sold for $36.00, 6 bidders.

Very nice long length of Duchesse with point de gaze fillings. Note the raised work on the bobbinlace. Some localized staining (coffee?). Looks like it could be removed fairly easily.

Good Irish crochet motif with padded and raised work. Very good condition. These little motifs can occasionally be found, they actually might be French origin.

Auction ends: Apr 27, 2011 08:48:59 PDT
Offered by: Maria Niforis, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: Densely patterned whitework handkerchief with many needlelace jour fillings.  Work is excellent. Seller cites a few small spots and one small repair to the cloth. A beautiful piece.

   Sold for $695.00, 9 bidders.

Size: lace is 9″ wide
Starting price: 24.99 GBP
Auction ends: Apr 27, 2011 09:44:38 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller discover4, London, United Kingdom
Comments: The design of this fan is rather conventional. Work looks more on the Brugges side than Duchesse. But it is of large size and looks in good condition; a few spots and minor pulls. And it isn’t attached to fan sticks, which I think is a plus.

Sold for 42.66 GBP, 3 bidders.

Auction ends: Apr 27, 2011 13:52:27 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller jennysjunque, Olathe, KS, United States
Comments: Yet another Point de Gaze 4-winged butterfly. This one is quite nice, with an interesting treatment of the clothwork in the wings. Note the stabilizing thread along the top, a nice touch.  Color is a bit strange, don’t know if that’s intentional or just age.

   Sold for $38.00, 2 bidders.

Auction ends: May 21, 2011 21:49:58 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller twistintime, Philadelphia / DFW, United States
Comments: A major Belgian needlelace length, beautiful work. No raised petals, which for me puts this in a much more flexible technical category. Purchased at auction in 1988. Aside from a few pinholes in the mesh, seems in excellent condition.

   Unsold.

Comments: Belgian needlelace shawl from the same collector as the flounce above. Pointed petals on the roses indicate a better quality manufacture.  Looks in excellent shape.

Ebay Alerts! Ten items – April 21, 2011

http://tinyurl.com/449wnfj ANTIQUE LACE-LOVELY SILK MALTESE LACE SHAWL
Size: ~74″-75″ long, 25″ at widest part
Starting price: $295.00
Auction ends: Apr 24, 2011 04:58:57 PDT
Offered by: Maria Niforis, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: This ‘shawl’ is draped over a manikin, but it looks like a mantilla with a large oval center and attached lappet ends that were so popular in the 19th century. A good example, with a typical Maltese construction of a center part surrounded by a separately made border. The center part seems to be made up of squares containing a circular motif, which seems cut where the pattern comes to the edge. But it could have been woven that way. Condition looks excellent.

   Sold for $295.00, 1 bidder.

http://tinyurl.com/42za5s7 ANTIQUE LACE-SUPERB 247″ MALTESE LACE FLOUNCEL

Starting price: $195.00
Auction ends: Apr 24, 2011 05:08:06 PDT
Offered by: Maria Niforis, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: Good Maltese border, bold simple design. Very good condition, I can’t see any damage in the photos.

   Sold for $260.00, 2 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/3km62ab ANTIQUE LACE-FINE 19THC. BUCKINGHAMSHIRE LACE
Size: 5″ x 195″
Starting price: $95.00
Auction ends: Apr 24, 2011 05:20:37 PDT
Offered by: Maria Niforis, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: I looked through two good references, the Lace Dealer’s Pattern Book, and Hannover’s Tønderske Kniplinger (which shows point ground examples from many countries) to try and convince myself that this is Bucks, not Lille or Tønder. The scalloped large eye edge is can be found in all three, mid 19th century. Bucks doesn’t go much in for large sprigs in the ground, and the little cartouches are unusual. But the mesh doesn’t really look 45 degrees, so I think I’ll endorse the Bucks attribution.  Very interesting piece.

   Sold for $99.99, 2 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/3v5ql8c ANTIQUE LACE-FINE 17THC. MILANESE LACE BORDER
Size: ~31.5″ X 5-1/2″
Starting price: $125.00
Auction ends: Apr 24, 2011 06:45:31 PDT
Offered by: Maria Niforis, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: Good Milanese design, heavier linen thread would indicate Italian. The integrated header and footer are also a good sign. Bold design, basically good condition.

   Sold for $222.50, 4 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/3mp3dqe Klöppelsack mit Klöppelständer um 1910
Size: stand, 24 cm x 27 cm x 78 cm. Pillow 22 cm long, 16 cm diameter.
Starting price: 1.00 EUR
Auction ends: Apr 24, 2011 13:08:35 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller antikliga, Lauter, Germany
Comments: Good solid stand, I think the date is accurate. Pillow measurements seem small. Stand looks adjustable in height but I’m not sure how it is done. Wood grain is nice and well aligned in all the pieces. A few dings in the finish, but overall good.

Sold for 34.20 EUR, 6 bidders.

Size: none given
Starting price: $200.00
Auction ends: Apr 24, 2011 16:46:17 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller nowamommyx2, Bergen County, NJ, United States
Comments: Pretty standard Duchesse fan, mother of pearl guard sticks. Does have the original box, no retailer’s lable that I can see.  I don’t see any damage, maybe a spot or two, but overall good. Unfortunately there aren’t good closeups.

   Did not sell.

http://tinyurl.com/3awtu9p ANTIQUE LACE- CIRCA 1800’s, BUCKINGHAMSHIRE LACE
Size: 2.5″ x 66″, joined in a circle
Starting price: $45.00
Auction ends: Apr 25, 2011 05:03:23 PDT
Offered by: Maria Niforis, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: Looking at the same references cited in the Bucks example above. I think this is a 1st half 19th century Lille piece. Clothwork is a bit too dense for Bucks, and design more naturalistic. Good condition, seller cites a few small openings.

   Sold for $45.00, 1 bidder.

Auction ends: Apr 25, 2011 12:19:41 PDT
Offered by: Maria Niforis, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: Mechlin hunter with deer border. Very straight edge to the lace. Nice monogram with a crown, seller says there is a royal provenance, but gives no details. Overall excellent condition.

   Sold for $597.99, 4 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/3cedeoq ANTIQUE LACE-CIRCA 18THC. VALENCIENNE LACE

Auction ends: Apr 25, 2011 17:11:25 PDT
Offered by: Maria Niforis, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: Round hole Valenciennes border. This is one of my favorite laces. 3rd quarter 18th c.  Lovely line-drawing design. Condition looks good, although the top edge might be a bit rough in places. Hard to tell.

$45.00, reserve not met, 1 bidder.

Auction ends: Apr 25, 2011 18:35:32 PDT
Offered by: Paivi Roberts, Ebay seller greatlace, Paris – Palm Beach, United States
Comments: Very long border of mid 19th century Mechlin. Not quite as complex as 18th century counterpart, but a definite throwback in design. The thread does look cotton. Looks in great shape, maybe just a few spots.

   Sold for $275.00, 3 bidders.
