Drouot is an organization of auction houses throughout France, including their main facility, the Hôtel Drouot in the 9th arrondissement of Paris. Established in 1852, Hôtel Drouot held a monopoly on French antiques auctions until legal reforms opened the way for international competition in 2000.  The Gazette Drouot http://www.gazette-drouot.com/ lists upcoming auctions.

Claude has sent us these notes on the bidding process, which are much better than what I’ve written in the past:

If you wish to purchase any of the lace and cannot come to Paris, there are three ways to do so.

Online bidding with Drouot Live:
If you want to bid by yourself you will have to create an account. Then you will be able to follow the sale with a real time viewing of the auction directly from your computer. You can bid by clicking the appropriate bidding price when the auctioneer reaches the lot you are interested in. If you wish to register for the auction please follow the instructions at http://tinyurl.com/zl5beow to create a Drouot Live Account. You must also register for this specific auction before noon on June 13, 2016 – go to http://tinyurl.com/z4abdwb and find the auction on the page for June 13.
The view on your computer has a few seconds delay but the auctioneer is used to it and he will wait a few second when somebody is bidding through the net. This works well as long as the internet equipment has no connection troubles.

Phone bidding:
Otherwise, you can ask to be called when the auctioneer is approaching the particular lot number. A member of the staff will phone you a few minutes before the item will be on sale and you can instruct him to bid on you behalf, in real time.  Both of these possibilities are free of charge and will not have any impact to the final hammer price.

Absentee Bid:
You can also submit an Absentee Bid Form (an order bid) and the auction house will execute it by bidding for you behalf until the price has reached your nominated amount. If bidding doesn’t reach this amount, you win the item for the price at which the bidding ceased. If you are the winner, a member of the staff will send you by email your final invoice. We will send your item to the appropriate postal address as soon as we will get your payment.

The starting price for each lot is usually 10% to 20% less than the estimated price. If you are the only buyer you can get the item for a lower price then expected. Please note, there is a buyer’s premium on top of the hammer price.

Buyer’s Premium:  24.99% = 20.84% plus VAT of 20%
TTC (toutes taxe comprises) – check on this before the auction.
Payment due:  Expected almost immediately after the auction, cash, pre-approved cheque or credit card.

Comments: There is a lot of Bruges Bloemwerk lace out there, but it’s unusual to find a matching collar/cuff set. Typical flowers and trefoil leaves with a little scroll wok. “Single tally fillings, and note the typical ‘islands’ in the plaited brides.

Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A border of Brussels bobbinlace with droschel ground, mid 18th c. Louis XV undulating design, but with unusual variation Note the thin, segmented trail and lots of open space in the mesh. Motifs are delicately executed with interesting snowflake, partridge eye and diamond fillings, rather delicate in texture. Quite an interesting piece.
Provenance: From the auction http://tinyurl.com/zbs95qs.
Date: Mid 18th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut and secured both ends, engrelure added. Picoted lower border is a later addition. The heavy line at the upper edge below the engrelure is a little confusing.

Starting Price: £7.50
Auction ends: May 29, 2016, 12:45 PM PDT.
Offered by: Ebay seller vanye90, United Kingdom
Comments: A handkerchief of Brussels Duchesse.  No raised work in the Point de Gaze inserts in fact these are a ‘rayed’ design of simple thin lines like twigs with some rings and a few decorative ‘mode’ fillings. Conventional Duchesse motifs with a little raised work on halfstitch ground in the strapwork. Delicately made, nicely organized. No roses anywhere in this piece. That’s a nice change.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean, maybe a little beige, or that might be due to the color of the background.

Starting Price: £7.50
Auction ends: May 29, 2016, 12:50 PM PDT.
Offered by: Ebay seller vanye90, United Kingdom
Comments: A collar of a pieced bobbinlace with needle-made ground. The history is a bit unclear, but it appears that there were two forms of this lace, all of which generally go under the name Point di Milan, although one was done in Italy, the other in Belgium. The Belgian product is often referred to as ‘Old Flanders’, although strictly speaking this applies only to the motifs.  It often appears with a bride ground.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks a little beige (probably from the background color) with a few localized brown spots.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Offered by: Ebay seller vanye90, United Kingdom
Comments: A handkerchief of Point de gaze, with one raised petal in each small rose motif. Excellent technique and dense floral design, and note the 8-lobed decorative ‘mode’ filling. A higher-end market piece.
Date: 2nd half 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean.  Beige cast in the photograph, which is probably due to the background used. Hard to tell the exact color of the piece.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Offered by: Ebay seller pbur3053, Selkirk, United Kingdom
Comments: A crinoline flounce of Brussels bobbin and needlelace applique on machine net. Well done Second Empire floral design with lots of small circular esprits in the ground (sign of an earlier piece). The needlelace motifs are primarily confined to the flowers.  Short repeat, meant for light ruffling.
Date: 3rd quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut both ends.
Damage: Scattered small holes and pinholes in the tulle.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: Vertical fold creases.

Starting Price: $9.00
Auction ends: May 30, 2016, 8:19 AM PDT.
Offered by: Ebay seller itsforsaleby2, Lake Geneva, Wisconsin,  United States
Comments: An Irish Crochet ‘jabot’ worked all in one piece with the chocker collar, which is unusual. Raised work in the roses and especially the lower center flower – tightly worked, and I like the fillings used in the motifs. The motifs are a bit large, but overall this is a nice example of the type.
Date: ~1900
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: One broken bride.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Starting Price: $149.00
Auction ends: May 30, 2016, 8:26 AM PDT.
Offered by: Ebay seller lacemerchant, Whiting, Indiana, United States
Comments: This appears to be two lappets attached together, one is then cut off. Both joined ends are cut.  The patterns in both segments do not appear to match, although they are of the same stylistic period, and same technical quality (which is excellent). Droschel ground which is made in narrow strips, and you can see the seams coming apart in the 8th photo.  Good overall design, filling the space a little better than slightly later works. Interesting snowflake and partridge eye variations in the fillings.
Date: 3rd quarter 18th c.
Condition:
Modifications: An assembled piece.  Picot edge is a later addition.
Damage: Small holes and pinholes in the mesh. Some joins in the mesh coming apart, a few repairs.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Size: 1 yard 14″ x 4.5″
Starting Price: $149.00
Auction ends: May 30, 2016, 8:03 AM PDT.
Offered by: Ebay seller lacemerchant, Whiting, Indiana, United States
Comments: Point Colbert was a product of M. Auguste Lefébure of Bayeux and began around 1855.  The postcard below was published by Lefébure shows an example combined with some of his Alençon work.  It is not a slavish copy of Gros Point, but it is smaller in scale and used more naturalistic designs (often with Fleur d’Lis), and finer thread with mare widely spaced stitches. It was made into the early 20th c.
This piece is not Point Colbert – in style it more resembles contemporary Irish work. Especially the looped treatment of the border, and the design being much closer to the original Gros Point.
Date: 2nd half 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut both ends..
Damage: A little fuzzy fraying, I wonder if the thread is cotton.
Soilage: Seller cites Ivory/ecru color.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles

5/29/2016  This piece has been identified as a product of the Schuola di Merletti di Burano, probably early 20th c (see comment below).

Comments: A lappet scarf of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net.  Good design, filling the space nicely. Some needle-made rings and knot fillings, the mark of Brussels work.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.

The computer is back with a new disc, settling in nicely.  I’ll add more laces later.

5/30/16 I’m going to cut it short here. It’s probably due to the Memorial Day holiday today, but Ebay is extremely slow. And on top of that, if you use Esnipe, Ebay has just put in some very severe restrictions on sniping, which has everyone is upset.  Hopefully the problems will be resolved quickly, and I’ll get back to the normal schedule.
