Apologies, the announcement is rather late, but don’t miss the chance to see the lace of this excellent group.  The St. Albans Lacemakers sent this description of the exhibition:

In April 2015 Gwynedd Roberts , Hon Museum Curator at The Lace Guild, Stourbridge, England invited local groups to mount an exhibition of their Members’ work at The Hollies from February –April 2016. It was too good an opportunity to miss, a chance to show visiting Lacemakers from the UK and around the world what Alban Lacemakers could do.

Having discussed how this was going to be brought about we decided to ask members to lend us a or pieces of their handmade lace and left it to them to choose not necessarily perfect pieces but lace which they enjoyed making and were proud of. We did not limit our members to any theme and were lent around 140 pieces of lace of all types.

Three friends got together and looked at what we had been given, letting the lace dictate the theme for each of the 8 cabinets.

Having been lent a beautiful creamy-white parasol the theme for the first cabinet just had to be ‘Wedding Day’. It gave us an excuse to use a beautiful Bedfordshire handkerchief and a photo framed with the Wedding Bells point ground lace and a few accessories that was one display completed.

Several lovely pieces of Honiton lace just had to be together so we needed a cabinet for finer laces Adding Binche, Point Ground, Milanese and Rococo and the cabinet looked good.

With a wonderful Christening set of gown, under slip, bonnet and bootees The Christening was an obvious theme.

We had several Bedfordshire and Point ground collars, a lappet, ties, and two fans. The beautiful Bedfordshire fan, the design being taken from a from the book “Bedfordshire Lace Patterns” by Margaret Turner Together with it’s own beautifully hand made case, just had to be displayed in ‘Lace to Wear’.

We had been lent a scrapbook page with a birthday theme and managed to use two Torchon table runners, one designed as well as made a member, and a Brugge Bloemwerk tea cosy which together with a couple of dainty cups and saucers and a lace mat which gave us the Birthday Tea party.

We had also been asked to fill a cabinet at The Red Cone Museum, just up the road. We picked a few of the remaining piece including Modern, Torchon, Idrija and Russian tape lace and together with the Union Flags, designed and made by one of our members, and completed this cabinet and the set at The Hollies.

We would love to receive feedback from anyone who visited the displays.

This year’s competition is based on the theme of ‘Something for yourself’. Entries are due by May 2, 2016, 16:00.  Winners will be announced on May 26th at 15:00.
The opening ceremony will include a ‘lace day’, I assume May 5th, starting at 15:00.

The Seto farm museum has a wonderful collection of local folk items, especially costume and textiles. I was able to find one explanation on the visitestonia website:
“The Seto Lace Days bring together handicraft enthusiasts from far and wide. Lacework techniques used in Seto handicrafts are showcased in workshops and exhibitions and visitors are taught how to implement them in contemporary handicraft. The culmination of the event each year is the judging of the competition entries. For visitors this is an excellent opportunity to try their own hand at the art and see the masters at work.”
