http://tinyurl.com/jak33gm ANTIQUE LACE- Circa 17-18THEC. PUNCETTO W/DOUBLE HEADED EAGLE
Size: 24″ x almost 4.5″
Starting Price: $95.00
Auction ends: April 24, 2016, 6:59 AM PDT.
Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, New York United States
Comments: Part of a band of early Italian Punto Tirato Tela Sfilata, with unusual red (perhaps silk) overcasting thread.  This is much rarer than the more often seen white linen thread. Typical arrangement of the main border edged with two smaller borders which we associate with early work – so is the undulating design. Here’s the hard part – what does the base cloth look like? It might be a fairly open plain weave, which has been embroidered over by a heavier white thread after the drawnwork was done (if there even was any drawnwork. You can see places where this raised work goes both in the horizontal and vertical direction, which makes me think it is not a supplementary weft/warp technique, but something used after the fact to bring the motifs out better.
Provenance: Museum deaccession
Date: 17th century.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see the ends to tell if they are cut.
Damage: A little worn.
Soilage: Red dye is faded.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Offered by: Ebay seller wattnotts, Derbyshire, United Kingdom
Comments: A Bruges Bloemwerk  collar or bertha. the motifs are a little on the Duchesse side, but note the ‘islands’ in the brides and the lack of raised work. These are more typical of Bloemwerk. Simple pattern with few motifs effectively arranged.  Given the measurements I’m thinking the motifs are fairly large.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Occasional broken bride and loose threads.
Soilage: A few localized brown spots. Seller cites a cream color.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: Two needlelace collars from the same seller. The first has a tag labeled “Point a l’aiguille”, which was the preferred term originally used for what we now call “Point de Gaze”. No raised work or elaborate decorative ‘mode’ fillings, but there are some delicate grids of rings. The scallops in the first collar approach the ‘point de gaze guipure’ that you sometimes see in this lace. The looped picots around the edges are a sign of a specific, but unknown manufacturer.
The second collar is also Point de Gaze with no raised work, but with a denser design and little heavier cordonnet. The fillings are a little more elaborate than in the first piece. The outer edge treatment is interesting, a single thread periodically buttonholed along the edge.
Provenance: From the auction http://tinyurl.com/zbs95qs
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.  Engrelure added to the neckline of the first piece.
Damage: Nothing obvious form the photos on the first piece.  Neckline is a little frayed on the second.
Soilage: Both look clean.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles in either.  The first looks unused.

Offered by: Ebay seller sewandso1, Sarasota, Florida, United States
Comments: A Duchesse de Bruxelles frontpiece, no raised work in the Point de Gaze inserts. Quite an interesting piece and even though it has an ‘assembled’ look, I think it is original. There is a lot of raised work in the Duchesse. Quite an effective design.

Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: Three mid 18th c round-hole Valenciennes borders from the same seller. All have the typical Louis XV undulating design with the second example ore complex than the others.  Undulations are a little broken up in the 3rd piece. Note the careful ‘line drawing’ effect, especially in the 2nd piece.
Provenance: From the auction http://tinyurl.com/zbs95qs

Comments: A Mechlin border, later 19th c. The naturalistic design at the use of half-stitch in the design is an indication of later 19th c. Note the woven square tallies in the fillings.  Beautiful piece.

Comments: A lappet scarf of Maltese. Good guipure work at the ends with some leaves and a flower.  The medallions doing up the center of the piece are quite elaborate with woven tally stars and a central cross. There are a few fillings of 6-pointed start around the edges. An impressive piece.

Comments: A Two segments of Brussels Duchesse  – there are two more segments listed as #152062757426. About the same length as these. Raised petal rose in each Point de Gaze insert, nicely worked. Raised work on half-stitch background in the Duchesse.  Occasional needlelace accents in the bobbinlace with no PtdG ground. The design is quite dense and well organized – a higher end market piece.

Offered by: Ebay seller curated_store, Dublin, Ohio, United States
Comments: Probably a souvenir Bloemwerk piece, showing a Belgian maker at her kantkussen with bobbins in raised work.  There’s a view of something in Bruges out one window, and a spider with web in another window. All this is quite well done, and note the complex plaited grounds. Unfortunately the dimensions are not given. Things like this do come up occasionally, but not often. I have a Point de Paris lacemaker in my own collection (shown below).

4/24/16  I got a note from a LaceNews reader who says she has a pattern for the listed piece which is labeled “Bruges” and looks to be from the end of the 19th c.  She has also reminded me that my piece was designed by Marleen Lievens in Belgium.

Comments: Collar and cuff set of Duchesse de Bruges. Raised bobbinlace on half-static background in the violet motifs, and note the well-worked small buds around the sides. It’s a fairly complex design, not typical Duchesse.

Comments: A Rosaline Perlé collar. This is a Belgian lace that developed later in the 19th c and is characterized by small motifs with looped edges, holes in the clothwork, sometimes with, sometimes without a bride ground, and simple bobbin-made fillings. The perls can be needle or bobbin-made, I can’t tell from the photos on this piece.  This is a large well-worked piece of excellent design.

Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A pair of 18th c lappets with droschel ground, probably Belgian. As noted in the writeup I helped in the identification of this set. The fillings don’t show much variation, but the motifs are quite delicately worked. Note that the design of the flowers changes as you go to each repeat – a sign of a better thought out design. I especially like the woven ‘tally’ detail that you can see all in a row at the ends of each lappet. It is details like this that make me think these are Flemish rather than English.
Provenance: From the auction http://tinyurl.com/zbs95qs

Comments: A Brussels Duchesse triangular shawl with raised petal roses in the naturalistic roses in the Point de Gaze inserts.  Lots of raised work in the elaborate bobbinlace on halfstitch background. Comments: A square mesh Valenciennes border with ombré half-stitch shading.  Short repeat, very careful technique with just a few esprits in the ground. I like the term ‘petticoat border’, this lace was often used to edge personal linens.
Provenance: From the auction http://tinyurl.com/zbs95qs

Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A Louis XV Mechlin set of lappets joined at the top. Quatrefoil filings, and the little diamond windows in the clothwork are both very typical of this lace.  Each ‘window’ is supposed to be a prayer to the Virgin. The motifs are a little blocky in shape – you see this a lot in Mechlin of this period. Toward the join the flower seems to be coming from a kind of flowerpot – but the main thing is that the floral design changes with each undulation in the design.
Provenance: From the auction http://tinyurl.com/zbs95qs
Date: 3rd quarter 18th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Joined at the top, hard to tell if the top edges are intact.
Damage: A few pinholes in the mesh, minor.

Auction ends: April 29, 2016, 6:21 PM PDT.
Offered by: Ebay seller lacecathy, Sandia Park, New Mexico, United States
Comments: Lace pillows like this are found in Switzerland and in Belgium. The Belgian ones tend to have the roller set toward the front of the pillow, Swiss ones are more toward the back, even hanging over the back edge.  But there are no hard and fast rules here. In this piece the decorative back element is quite interesting, but there’s nothing like it in the “Klöppel~Kissen~Ständer” book. Ratcheted stand looks more Belgian, but atypical. Note how it is attached to the pillow, something you don’t see normally.  I think the stand looks more modern than the pillow – little foot wear.
Provenance: Purchased from a historic registered house in Clovis, NM. Previously purchased from a small agricultural museum in Texas.
Date: early 20th c.

Modifications: None.
Damage: General wear and some bald spots on the pillow.

The group formed back in 1985, and March 2010 saw their 25th Annual General Meeting!  Founder Maureen Bromley states:  “It only seems like 5 minutes since the Society was set up.  We are now looking forward to our 30th year of Lacemaking!”
Meetings are held 4 times a year (January, March, May and November) at the Marist Church Hall, Kingston-upon-Hull. The AGM is at the March meeting. An Annual Lace Day is held in September, also at the Marist Church Hall.  Wolds demonstrators can frequently be found at various other events throughout East Yorkshire. See their website for details.

Drouot is an organization of auction houses throughout France, including their main facility, the Hôtel Drouot in the 9th arrondissement of Paris. Established in 1852, Hôtel Drouot held a monopoly on French antiques auctions until legal reforms opened the way for international competition in 2000.  The Gazette Drouot http://www.gazette-drouot.com/ lists upcoming auctions.

Claude has sent us these notes on the bidding process, which are much better than what I’ve written in the past:

If you wish to purchase any of the lace and cannot come to Paris, there are three ways to do so.
Bidding by yourself:
If you want to bid by yourself you will have to create an account. Then you will be able to follow the sale with a real time viewing of the auction directly from your computer. You can bid by clicking the appropriate bidding price when the auctioneer reaches the lot you are interested in. If you wish to register for the auction please follow the instructions at http://tinyurl.com/zl5beow.

The view on your computer has a few seconds delay but the auctioneer is used to it and he will wait a few second when somebody is bidding through the net. This works well as long as the internet equipment has no connection troubles.

Otherwise, you can ask to be called when the auctioneer is approaching the particular lot number. A member of the staff will phone you a few minutes before the item will be on sale and you can instruct him to bid on you behalf, in real time.  Both of these possibilities are free of charge and will not have any impact to the final hammer price.

Absentee Bid
You can also submit an Absentee Bid Form (an order bid) and the auction house will execute it by bidding for you behalf until the price has reached your nominated amount. If bidding doesn’t reach this amount, you win the item for the price at which the bidding ceased. If you are the winner, a member of the staff will send you by email your final invoice. We will send your item to the appropriate postal address as soon as we will get your payment.

The starting price for each lot is usually 10% to 20% less than the estimated price. If you are the only buyer you can get the item for a lower price then expected. Please note, there is a buyer’s premium on top of the hammer price.

Buyer’s Premium:  24.99% = 20.84% plus VAT of 20%
TTC (toutes taxe comprises) – check on this before the auction.
Payment due:  Expected almost immediately after the auction, cash, pre-approved cheque or credit card.
