The lot of interest is #13, the collar of Milanese said to have been worn by Charles I on the scaffold (January 30, 1649). The provenance for this piece can be traced back to a purchase from Christie’s, October 18, 1983, lot 52.  Further back to the exhibition “Royal House of Stuarts” (which occurred in 1889 at the New Gallery in London), it was item #374.
OK. Let’s take a closer look at this.  The original catalog of the 1889 exhibition is available online in several places such as http://tinyurl.com/qbqkhf6, and there appears to be an updated version, http://tinyurl.com/q8j3ujg.  If you look at item 374 in the original catalog, it says, “Glove of Charles I., worn by the king on the scaffold. Lent by V. F. Bennett-Stanford, Esq.”   No mention of a collar.  However the second version adds an item  No. 374*  described as “Lace collar worn by Charles I. on the scaffold. Lent by George Somes, Esq.”  Item 376, originally described as a cap not worn on the scaffold, suddenly adds a 376* cap worn on the scaffold, also lent by George Somes, Esq. It’s a little curious but let’s assume that item 374* is the one now  up for auction, and that the catalog may have been revised for some late additions to the exhibition (There are several other items with a * in the later catalog that are not present in the first catalog).
But let’s look at the form of the collar, which is a ‘bib fronted band’ with what appears to be the original linen collar and tassels. It is incredibly rare that such a piece would survive intact, whether worn by Charles I or not.  Just looking at this piece gives wonderful clues as to how these items were fitted to the collar (I have one without the original fittings in my own collection which is now being mounted for exhibition at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. Getting it to fit properly around a manikin bust is proving difficult). Unfortunately, this is a form more typical of Charles II. Charles I is almost always depicted in portraiture with the wider ‘falling band’, see for example, the van Dyck portrait of 1635-36 http://tinyurl.com/oqvf53h.  Or he has a limp ruff as in this example from 1628 http://tinyurl.com/nbsm93p.  The last portrait of Charles I by Edward Bower completed in 1650 shows him at the time of his trial in a very simple lace-edged collar http://tinyurl.com/olch6y8. Something similar was worn by his son Charles II painted in 1653, this time with a tassel, almost a precursor to the bib-fronted band. http://tinyurl.com/p265ywz.  The full bib-fronted band seems to have developed later in the 1650’s, and Charles II is wearing an excellent example in  his coronation portrait of 1661 http://tinyurl.com/oeumtt5.
We also need to look at the lace itself. It does seem to be all in one piece.  I don’t think it is an Italian Milanese piece, the thread is too fine, and the way the curves are handled looks more Flemish or even English.  And the ground is extremely unusual, I’ve never seen anything like it. Overall, I’m reminded of the piece in figure  155 of Levey, “Lace A History”, which depicts Charles II of Spain, crowned in 1665, the same date as the lace. There are some earlier laces tending toward this style, but I don’t think you would have seen it as fully developed until the 1660’s.
Then there is historical evidence. Contemporary accounts mention that he wore two shirts so as not to get cold, and probably a knit overgarment (http://tinyurl.com/y9nuz3h) but nothing describes the collar – and there don’t appear to be any stains on the auction piece.  His clothing was immediately distributed to people at the execution.
I’ve gone on long enough – I think this is a piece dating from around 1660.

There are a few dresses made of lace in the auction, but no other single pieces.

12/9/2015 The bib fronted band sold for £3,600.00

Administrative: No Ebay Alerts for November 15, 2015

Apologies, big deadline coming up for work, so I’m blowing off the Ebay Alerts for Sunday. Compounding the problem is the fact that Microsoft issued a systems update Wednesday night which had the effect of crashing Windows 7 Outlook email, and has messed up my computer for several days. MS did issue a fix, so things are back to normal, although I have some catching up to do.
Take a look at the offerings of seller eastayton (a.k.a. Anne Swift), who is showing some excellent pieces.  I’ll resume next week.
And I’ll also start getting back to posting events very soon.  My ‘vacation’ has gone on long enough.

Comments: A Honiton guipure handkerchief. Snails/slugs style, delicately done, especially the ‘fern’ leaves in two corners. These are what really makes the piece.   Note the needle-made brides wound around 4 connecting threads.  Good tally leadwork fillings.  An interesting piece.

Comments: A square shawl of Carrickmacross applique, and a matching section of a flounce. Fairly elaborate floral design with needlerun fillings, and note the spiky picots along the outer edge.  This is sometimes seen as an alternative to the larger looped picots.
Provenance: None cited.
Date:  4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None on the veil, flounce is extensively cut.
Damage: Shawl: Small holes in the ground, 3 repairs.  Flounce:  large holes cut into the piece.

Comments: A rectangular scarf of Honiton applique on machine net.  It works as a collar, however it doesn’t have the larger outer edge typical of a bertha. Snails/slugs style, with the design nicely massed on the lower border.  Good woven tally leadworks, mostly of one kind.
Provenance: None cited.
Date:  4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Small holes and pinholes in the tulle.
Soilage: Looks beige in color in this lighting.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Size: ~103″ x 41.5″
Starting Price: £20.00
Auction ends: November 9, 2015 1:21 PM PST
Offered by: Ebay seller garden*hill, Reading, United Kingdom
Comments: A triangular shawl of Honiton applique on machine net.  The motifs are a bit more advanced than snails/slugs, large massed floral spray in the lower center. Wider border of flowers around the lower edge, narrower at the top, and small sprigs are used in the ground. This triangular form for Honiton applique is a bit unusual.
Provenance: None cited.
Date:  3rd quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Tear in the tulle with failed repair at one end. Small holes and pinholes in the mesh throughout. Some holes repaired.
Soilage: Seems a little beige in color in this lighting.
Finish: One fold crease that I can see, some minor wrinkling.

Comments: A handkerchief with a tape lace border, perhaps Russian Yelets.  I don’t think it’s Idria or Italian.  There’s a lace museum in Yelets http://tinyurl.com/p9ouv5t. Recent photos of this lace look more like Vologda, but I think the more traditional form is this narrow, dense tape.
Provenance: None cited.
Date:  20th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Seller cites some small holes in the cloth.
Soilage: Light red staining.
Finish: A little wrinkled.

Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, New York, United States
Comments: A 19th c Gros Point copy.  The thread looks linen.  Very hard to tell where this might have been made – Italy, France, Belgium, Ireland.  Someday I’ll write a book on the subject.  It does have some interesting decoration in the clothwork, and I like the heavy round rings in the middle of the brides. That kind of seems like a Belgian technique.
Provenance: None cited.
Date:  later 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see the ends to tell if they are cut, but I assume so.
Damage: Seller cites a few openings.
Soilage: Looks clean.

Comments: A table cover edged with figural Point de Paris, including birds in trees and a dog. That might be a butterfly between the facing birds, but I’m not sure. This type of figural work is not unusual in Point de Paris, especially in table linens.
Provenance: None cited.
Date:  ~1900
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Seller cites deep ivory white color.
Finish:  A little creasing and wrinkling, especially in the center cloth.

Comments: Another 19th c Gros Point copy. This one has very fine thread, good decorative filings and a lot of fillings that look a little ‘Point de Gaze’ in technique.  So I’m guessing Belgian. However the cordonnets are tightly buttonholed, which might mean Austria.
Provenance: None cited.
Date:  4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut both ends, engrelure added.
Damage: Seller cites a couple of minor breaks.
Soilage: Seller cites deep ivory white color, and a few minor stains that I can’t find.

Offered by: Ebay seller things*most*delightful, Sacramento, California, United States
Comments: A Point de Gaze handkerchief, no raised work.  The striped pattern is occasionally seen in this lace, and note the single looped picots around the outer edge. The design is quite unusual, even to the bellflowers anchoring the rest of the pattern. In pieces like this there is often an emphasis on decorative ‘mode’ fillings, seen here in the corners. The little 4-petaled buds in the strips are quite unusual.
Provenance: None cited.
Date:  2nd half 19th century.
Condition:

Damage: A few pinholes in the mesh. One break middle of the right side.
Soilage: Some localized red staining.

Auction ends: November 10, 2015 7:15 PM PST
Offered by: Ebay seller dollyslace, Manchester, United Kingdom
Comments: A Brussels bobbin and needlelace oval bridal veil applique on machine net.  The roses are Point de Gaze with raised petals (nicely done with diamond widows in the petals), and elaborate center fillings. There is one major flower spray in the train area, with a floral border, wider at the back and narrower at the front.  Small flower sprays and dots decorate the main tulle area.
I’m not wild about the treatment of the pointed leaves – they just look tied off at the points with a little fluffy end of the gimp – and frankly, a little ‘Princesse’. But I think they are all handmade.
Provenance: None cited.
Date:  ~1900.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Seller cites 2 minor pinholes, one small and one tiny repair.
Soilage: Seller cites “antique ivory’ color.  One small age mark.
Finish:  No obvious creases or wrinkles.  Good drape to the tulle.

Offered by: Ebay seller hedgehogpear, BN8, United Kingdom
Comments: A Brussels bobbinlace with bride ground, about 1730. This is not Brabant style, but has considerable sophistication and technical excellence. It looks cut at the top, and there appears to be separate piece of slightly darker color joined along the bottom third. There is also a separate piece tacked on both ends. All these appear to have come from different original pieces. Quiet an interesting study for an assembled piece.
Provenance: None cited.
Date:  ~1730
Condition:
Modifications: Assembled, cut ends, 3 major joins, engrelure added.
Damage: Fraying and broken brides – severity depends on which section you are looking at.
Soilage: Localized age spotting throughout.
Finish:  Fold creases evident.

Starting Price: £49.00
Auction ends: November 11, 2015 12:40 PM PST
Offered by: Ebay seller lacemerchant, Whiting, Indiana, United States
Comments: A pair of round hole Valenciennes lappets with matching capback frill, although as in similar sets, the frill is not attached.  Which makes this set a rare survivor.  The delicate thin design is sometimes known as Valenciennes Anglaise, probably a marketing name. It is quite a distinct style, often seen in narrow edgings.
Provenance: None cited.
Date:  late 18th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Edging cut both ends and secured, engrelure added. I have a feeling the picoted edge is a later addition.  The lappets look in original condition, although it would help if there were a closeup of the upper ends.
Damage: Lappets a little frayed along the edges. Occasional very minor pinhole and pulls in the mesh.
Soilage: Seller cites ivory color. There appear to be a few small red spots in the edging.
Finish:  Vertical fold creases in the edging, creases throughout the lappets.

Comments: Belgian Point de Gaze long border, no raised work. There’s a short repeat of three asymmetric leaves with two flowers below, then a more vertical element with hanging leaves (with and 8-petaled decorative ‘mode’). Some heavy rings in flower centers. And interesting piece with a rather atypical design, but well suited for ruffling.
Provenance: None cited.
Date:  2nd half 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Not sure if the end I can see has been cut – it might be a natural termination.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.  Looks unused.

Comments: A Chantilly lappet scarf, no ombre work. The floral design is quite effective with little cartouches containing a flowerpot at the ends and single spray father up.  Good example of the form.
Provenance: None cited.
Date:  4th quarter 19th c.

Comments: I especially wanted to review this narrow round-hole Valenciennes edge because of the similarity in design to the lappet/frill set above. This simple lace is a favorite of mine, especially when it is made in very fine thread, and you usually find it with quite a straight edge.  Similar patterns are also made with the square mesh, indicating that the style survived well into the 19th c.
Provenance: None cited.
Date:  1st half 19th c.

Modifications: Both ends cut.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.

Comments: A semi-circular Chantilly hat veil. Fairly elaborate with a dense pattern of esprits in the ground, and note the underline of flowers just below the top edge. Quite a effective as well as practical design for an item like this. Hard to tell if it is French or Belgian – I’m guessing France.
Provenance: None cited.
Date:  2nd half 19th c.
Condition:

Damage: Occasional pinhole in the mesh and broken thread – minor.

Comments: A narrow scarf of Point d’Angleterre – meaning a pieced bobbinlace with a Point de Gaze ground. The ends do contain a more traditional Point de Gaze insert – no raised work. There is a little raised work on halfstitch background in some of the strapwork. This type of lace often has a more sophisticated design than related Duchesse, and this example has a very nice presence.
Provenance: None cited.
Date:  2nd half 19th c.

Damage: Seller cites a small split alongside one leaf in the border. Mesh looks good.
Soilage: Seller cites some areas of light discoloration.

Size: Not given.
Starting Price: $45.00 with reserve
Auction ends: November 12, 2015 2:25 AM PST
Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, New York, United States
Comments: A lappet set of Mechlin, Louis XV design with fond de glace.  It has seen better days, but is an excellent example of this style.  The motifs are a little blocky, typical of Mechlin of this period.  Note the quatrafoil fillings in some areas.  Seller is correct, it’s finer than it looks in the photos.
Provenance: None cited.
Date:  mid 18th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Looks like they are cut at the top and joined.  Picot edging is a later addition.
Damage: Numerous holes in the mesh of various sizes.  Some pulls in the mesh and small repairs. Broken threads in the toile and some fillings.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish:  vertical fold creases evident.

Starting Price: $45.00 with reserve
Auction ends: November 12, 2015 2:12 PM PST
Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, New York, United States
Comments: A Punto in Aria border with deep scallops, with some Genoese bobbinlace.  One thing to me that argues for an early date is the framework of the piece – the heavy horizontal lines which divide the three sections in the top part. These appear to be woven braids, which is a technique you see in early Punto in Aria.  It gives the impression of the original cutwork cloth used in Reticella, but is more flexible. It appears to be used in the lower scallops also. The photos are a little fuzzy in this area, but I’m pretty sure the outside edge of the scallops is Genoese bobbinlace – note the woven leaves.
It is always difficult to date something like this, and I wish there were more closeups. But provisionally I’ll call it early.  There are a few things that bother me, like how the scalloped border doesn’t really match the upper border, and isn’t really aligned with the main design.
Provenance: None cited.
Date:  after 1600
Condition:
Modifications: Cut one end, can’t see the other end.
Damage: Seller cites a few openings near one end, and if that’s all, it is unusual for an early piece. Might be a warning sign.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish:  No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Starting Price: $45.00 with reserve
Auction ends: November 12, 2015 2:54 PM PST
Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, New York, United States
Comments: A Flemish Pottenkant insertion which looks more in the Mechlin technique with an elaborate snowflake-variation ground. I could probably track it down but my entire library is in boxes in a new storage facility, and it’s getting late.  The symmetric ‘flowerpot’ design, the straight edges of the piece, are enough to put it in the pottenkant style class, but I think the piece is being shown upside down since the picoted border is at the top.  I’m more inclined to put it in the Mechlin category.
Provenance: None cited.
Date:  1st half 1700’s.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see the ends to tell if they are cut.  Piece is sewn to tissue.  Straight top edge treatment is a bit confusing.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos .
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish:  Some creasing.

Comments: A rectangular shawl of Brussels Duchesse. Double raised petal roses in the Point de Gaze inserts, with diamond windows in the petals. Great photos of the back of the roses showing a little known technique of forming a base for the raised petals. Good rows of decorative ‘mode’ fillings, although not much variation. No raised work in the bobbinlace, which is of conventional Duchesse design.

Comments: A long Point de Gaze border – note the multiple raised petals in the roses. And how they are a little ‘cup’ shaped, sign of a particular manufacture whose name we don’t know. The back view has the same structure supporting the raised petals as in the previous piece. Slightly more naturalistic design than usual, although the motifs are a bit simple.

Comments: A Chantilly deep collar with frill around the upper part and long, wide hanging lappets.  There’s a lot of assembly in this piece, and similar examples usually have more shaped lappets. Still, the design as shown on the manikin and possibility for draping are interesting.

This is an important, although not well advertised exhibition. It is  put on by the Met Prints and Drawings department and is of great interest to the lace community especially those people who are interested in history and the inter-relationship between two disciplines that were burgeoning in tandem, print and lace making.  The Met has an extensive collection of early pattern books for textiles and lace, all of which have been recently conserved, scanned in their entirely and are available for viewing on the museum’s website.  The books are matched with examples of lace (35 pieces), embroidery, weavings, costumes and oil paintings which provide clear evidence of the dissemination of these early printed designs throughout the needlework community of the 16th and 17th centuries.

Curator Femke Speelberg made the decision to include on a single wall an entire previous exhibit that was put on by the department of Prints and Drawings in the 1930s. Curated by Margaret Daniels (later Margaret Abbegg who wrote “Apropos Patterns for Embroidery, Lace and Woven Textiles”), this exhibit consisted of cards on which photographic copies of patterns from the pattern books were paired with examples from the lace collection of the well known lace historian and member of the Needle and Bobbin Club, Marian Hague. These samples are small and in some cases in poor condition, but they have long been among the most popularly requested items by visitors to the Ratti Center who want to view authentic lace from the 16th and 17th century.

Devon Thein sent much of this information and the images below from the exhibition:

Comments: A Point de Gaze ‘necklace’, see the Ebay Alerts of Feb 8, 2015 http://tinyurl.com/klffxvg for a discussion of this form. Good precise work with some unusual decorative ‘mode’ elements used as raised buds. Note the widely spaced looped picots along the edges, sign of a better, but unknown manufacturer.

Starting Price: £40.00
Auction ends: November 1, 2015, 11:15 AM PST
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A single lappet of Brussels bobbinlace with bride ground, early 18th c. This is a beautiful design, excellent technique.  The variation on snowflake fillings is especially interesting.  Good piece to study to see how the lacemaker occasionally varied mirror elements on the right and left hand sides of the piece.  A high end market piece in it’s time.
Provenance: None cited.
Date:  These are usually dated 1720’s – 30’s, probably ~1730 or slightly later on this one because of the rounded end.
Condition:
Modifications: None. Wish the matching one was there, these always came in pairs.
Damage: Occasional edge separation, broken brides, pinholes and slightly worn spot. Pretty minor. Seller cites some minor repairs.
Soilage: Age darkened ecru color.  Localized small brown spots.  Don’t try to wash this yourself! I can recommend an excellent person for cleaning.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Comments: A Brussels Duchesse fan with plain Mother of Pearl sticks. Raised petal roses in the Point de Gaze insert, these petals have some diamond window work.  Conventional Duchesse with a little raised work on half-stitch background in the strapwork.  The Point de Gaze motifs are a little more naturalistic than usually found.
Provenance: None cited.
Date:  4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: I think there might be some repair in the PtdG mesh, lower left quadrant. One broken and repaired stick.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: Expected fan creases.

Starting Price: $39.00
Auction ends: November 1, 2015, 6:00 PM PST
Offered by: Ebay seller textiles2012, Hydes, Maryland, United States
Comments: A large, deep collar of Irish Crochet edged with a narrow Rose of Sharon border. There are several styles in this piece, a small wheel design near the neckline, Clones knots in the ground toward the edge.  Note the figural basket, and tightly woven larger motifs. It all looks a bit of a mishmash in design when put together, especially since the flower basket will be upside down when worn.
Date:  4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Ivory color.
Finish: No obvious creases or winkles – but doesn’t lie exactly flat. That might just be for the photo.

Comments: Matching cuffs of Brussels Duchesse with a raised double petal rose in each Point de gaze insert.  Note the rows of small buds at the top of each with raised ring centers.  The flowers in the lower corners in the photos are fairly elaborate, well done.  Unpicoted irregular brides.
Date:  4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:

Date:  4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: One area of separation at the end of one cuff.  Pinholes throughout the mesh.
Soilage: Seller cites “antique cream” color. Might be a little red spot near center outer edge of the collar.

Offered by: Ebay seller textiles2012, Hydes, Maryland, United States
Comments: Matching Irish Crochet collar and cuffs. The crispness of the work, the complexity of the grounds, and the typical ‘chrysanthemum’ floral elements, and the padded ‘ball’ elements probably indicate a French product.
Date:  ~1900
Condition:
Modifications: None.

Finish: A little wrinkling on some raised motifs, to be expected with this technique.

Comments: Here are two excellent 18th c Mechlin borders from the same seller, so I’ll do them together. The first has the undulating trail typical of Louis XV work, with an extensive partridge eye round.   Quatrefoil, circular and bar fillings are also used. Quite an impressive piece.  The second has the same flavor of design, but with fond de glace.  Note the quatrefoils in the fillings, along with an innovative set of other filling stitches. As far as design goes I’d give it to the first one because of the more naturalistic flower.  The second one has excellent technique, but the motifs are tending toward the blockiness that you often see in developing in Mechlin.
Date:  1st ~1730’s, 2nd 1740’s.
Condition:
Modifications: first – cut one end, can’t see the other end. Engrelure added.
second – cut one end, can’t see the other end. Picot edge added later.
Damage: first:  nothing really obvious.  second:  frayed and cut food edge, holes and pinholes in the mesh, less so in the toilé.
Soilage: Small localized brown spots on both.
Finish: First one has some light irregular creasing. Second one has vertical fold creaes.

Comments: A short length of Rosaline Perlé, and I think the perls are needle-made.  Note the unusual plaited border on the lower edge and up one side. Good floral design. I am a bit confused by the upper edge treatment, and I can’t see the other end. I wonder if this was adapted into a collar.
Date:  4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: One end looks original, can’t see the other end.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Seller cites ‘original cream patina’.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, New York, United States
Comments: A length of Flemish bobbinlace, probably from the Antwerp area, made for the Dutch market. This straight edge ‘cloud’ pattern was often used on bonnets in the low countries, and with the ‘kat stitch’ ground, has a lot of similarity with pottenkant laces.Because of this kind of trimming use they normally don’t survive in long lengths.  Only two other examples have come up on Ebay since I started keeping records in August 2010.  You would be surprised at how delicate the work actually is.
Date:  3rd quarter 17th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see the ends to tell if they are cut.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Seller cites ‘original cream patina’.
Finish: I think I see some light vertical creasing.

Comments: I’m going to hazard a guess that this is French Point Colbert, which developed in Bayeux in 1855 by M. Auguste Lefébure. It bears some resemblance to Alençon in the use of the mesh ground.  I’m sure many of the Venise-type laces appearing on Ebay are PC, however we don’t have much technical information on how they were made, so a lot is mis-attributed. The design in this piece is interesting, and the technique quite precise.
Date:  2nd half 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Seller cites ‘original cream patina’.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Comments: A border of Alençon with réseau fin. Some good decorative ‘mode’ fillings, not too varied in type. The toilé has a more open stitch typical of later 19th c work. Romantic floral design, tending toward naturalism.
Date:  2nd half 19th c.

Modifications: Ends cut, engrelure added.
Damage: Pinholes and small repairs in the mesh.

Comments: This is part of the collection of lace samples from the Craponne regions that I wrote about in last week’s Ebay alerts. It is a Lille-type point ground handkerchief edge. I don’t know anything that would tie this particular piece to that area, it could have been made in many places.  Good floral design incorporating some half-stitch in the flowers, and the 6-pointed star filling so typical of Spain. It does look like the thread is linen, which is unusual.
Date:  1st quarter 20th c

Comments: What is interesting about this Venise needlelace table cover is not only the figural work, but that the three-part flower heads are exactly the same as Cantu lace, but done in needlelace. So I’m going to guess that it is Italian.

Comments: A Chantilly mantilla form scarf, or perhaps a shawl where one edge can fold back over the other. The form is a little unusual.  Romantic florals, no ombré shading. Interesting series of circular medallions around all edges.

Comments: Interesting deep collar of black silk guipure, which might be Le Puy given the motifs done against half-stitch ground. Double picoted brides along the edges. There’s an unusual pattern of crosses and 6-pointed star fillings in the center. Actually, this reminds me of some large black silk Spanish pieces I have in my collection (especially with the fringe around the central part, so that could also be the source.

Auction ends: October 25, 2015 6:02 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller annasognosia, Port Chester, New York, United States
Comments: The one piece from this collection that I will discuss is the Chantilly shawl.  A typical romantic floral second empire piece which appears quite light in texture, likely French origin. The design and technique are good, the condition is problematic.  But Chantilly shawls like this should never been dismissed – they were a high point of the industry with (according to contemporary sources) 10 women taking about 10 months to complete one. The work was done in strips running vertically, with students taking the smaller strips so that everything would be done on time.
Provenance: None cited.
Date:  3rd quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None, although there isn’t a photo of the full piece. The photo below looks like it has the piece folded in half along the center point.
Damage: Racroc breaks throughout, some areas of mesh missing. Small holes nad pinholes in the mesh.  I think there’s been some attempt at repair.
Soilage: Looks clean but hard to tell with black lace.
Finish: Some creasing.

Comments: The narrow scarf of Duchesse de Bruxelles – no raised work int he Point de Gaze inserts.  No PtdG mesh either – just individual floral motifs. Very little in the way of decorative ‘mode’ fillings, but the piece really doesn’t need them. There is some raised work against half-stitch background in the Duchesse strapwork.  Overall this is an impressively designed piece with the PtdG motifs meshing very well with the bobbinlace flowers. One curious thing, the designs on the ends are not mirror images of each other, which is a little unusual.

Damage: Nothing obvious form the photos.

Comments: A deep collar or dress front of Brussels Duchesse. One raised petal rose at the back, the others are flat.  The design of both needle and bobbinlace are standard motifs, nothing very ambitious, and the piece has a slightly thrown-together look. But the form is unusual and nicely handled.

Comments: A short border of very precise Point de Gaze. Note the diamond windows and lines in the raised petals of the roses. Also note the very precise work on the edging at the lower border – I’ve always thought these connected picots resemble the horsehair in Alençon.  Some of the design is a little blocky, but it is very well organized with excellent technique. Wish there were more.

Comments: Two pieces of the same Gros Point style border. The borders are well sculpted and the thread appears to be linen. However I think this is a later piece, for a collection of reasons. The borders are not typical of early work (note the widely spaced buttonhole stitches, typical of Belgian work), neither is the patterning of the brides with the little ‘islands’ like you see in Bruges work. The little picoted wheel in the center of one of the motifs is not an early design. Some of the fillings are a little too lightly executed.  I’m guessing this is a Belgian piece.

Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, New York United States
Comments: An early Valenciennes border with 5-hole ground and a variety of fillings, all variations on partridge eye and snowflakes.  Note the extensive use of quatrefoils in the ‘line drawn’ elements of the clothwork, and also in the fillings. I do have some questions about the top edge.
Provenance: None cited.
Date:  1730’s
Condition:
Modifications: One end cut, can’t see the other end.  The top edge looks strange, and some of the motifs look like they are a bit abbreviated, I’m not sure if they were cut. This is because the top edge looks like it was secured with overcasting and there are no closeup photos to tell what is really going on.  Sellera also cites one join, but I’m not sure where it is.
Damage: Occasional pinhole throughout.
Soilage: Looks clean.

Comments: A single lappet of Sedan needlelace (see http://tinyurl.com/bewrwkj for a discussion of Sedan lace). The small motifs with a lot of vertical symmetry are typical of Bérain style of the Louis XIV period, however the presence of the mesh is a bit later in development. The delicacy of the technique of this piece is exceptional.

Comments: A border of Mechlin, good floral design with single sprigs used as ‘esprits’.  Note the woven tallies in the fillings. Also note the areas of half-stitch in the flowers, which I usually take to be an indication of a slightly later piece.
Provenance: none cited.

Comments: A border of early Devon bobbinlace with a combination droschel and bride ground.  Note the almost tape-like quality of the motifs which often form spirals and loop back on the previous path – very typical of this lace. It’s an acquired taste which I like very much. Especially note the raised work against half-stitch ground in a zigzag line – unusual.
Provenance: None cited.
Date:  Mid 18th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut both ends, engrelure added.  Engrelure extends across one end.
Damage: Some frayed spots, pinholes, separation from engrelure.

Comments: A Honiton guipure handkerchief. Some elements recall snails/slugs style, but it is definitely breaking out of that mode.   For example, note the woven tally leadworks in the ‘turkey tail’-like elements around the edge. Some of the motifs are very open, which is unusual. And there’s some innovative raised work on a few leaves.  Square-mesh picoted brides, slightly irregular. The attachment to the center cloth is rather clumsily executed.
Provenance: None cited.
Date:  Mid 18th c.
Condition:

Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.

Offered by: Ebay seller lacemerchant, Whiting, Indiana, United States
Comments: This piece is a good example of how a border (usually of the Louis XV type design) can be joined along the foot edge to increase the width of the piece.  Sometimes lappets were made this way. The original Valenciennes border has a round-hole mesh also has some snowflake fillings, fairly simple overall design.
Provenance: None cited.
Date:  Mid 18th c, modified in the 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Lengthwise join and assembly is a modification. Picoted border looks like a later addition.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos. Might be a repair about half-way up on the outer edge of the right hand end in the photo below, or it might just be a trick of the light.
Soilage: Ivory white color.
Finish: No obvious creases, a little light wrinkling (minor).

Comments: A fragment of a fairly wide Point de Gaze flounce, no raised work. Excellent romantic floral design, and I especially like the 8-lobed floral decorative ‘mode’ fillings – beautifully executed. There is also a curious combination of very plain, un-ornamented clothwork in some of the flowers, and more complex definition with a different filling stitch in others. Wish there were more of this.

Comments: A higher-end market Point de Gaze handkerchief, no raised work.  I especially like the little squares containing single rings around the inner border.  See comments below.
Provenance: None cited.
Date:  2nd half 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Extensive damage mostly to the mesh.  The majority of the clothwork looks in good shape. Question is, can something like this be repaired?  Yes – if you can find the proper thread, and if you know how to do a perfect Point de Gaze mesh stitch (with the correct hand position), and, if you understand how this piece was made so that the replacement mesh can integrate perfectly with the motifs.  I’m teaching a class in needlelace practicum at IOLI next year – a full week long every hour of the day used, and we are going to go into this exact question.  I’ve seen repairs that if you didn’t know they were there, look exactly original. Most repairs however, are very obvious.  As lacemakers, we need to do better.

Offered by: Ebay seller lachantal, Alençon, France
Comments: I’ll put these two together since they are similar.  Both are Alençon borders, the first with either Brides tortilée or bouclée – no closeups to really be able to tell for certain. It’s a Herren Alençon type, often used for men’s ruffled cuffs.  It’s a simple design, not many fillings, with a réseau fin filled in along the lower border. Also, not a lot of picots and no horsehair that I can see, making me think of Argentan.
The second piece is a similar type meant to be ruffled, but with réseau fin throughout. The design is lighter due to the mare floral design, and the stitch used in the clothwork, which is also a sign of 19th c work.
I don’t ever recall having a seller from Alençon selling Alençon lace on Ebay.
Provenance: None cited.

Comments: A border of Alençon, with a much more romantic 2nd empire floral design than the previous items by this seller.  Looks like some blue dye remains on the backside in places, probably from the original pattern.  Good decorative ‘mode’ fillings.  I don’t see any horsehair in the picots, but not enough closeups to get a really good look.

Comments: A Duchesse de Bruges collar.  Note the islands in the irregular picoted brides, which you often see in Bruges work. Good raised work on half-stitch background in the flowers.  These are for the most part not typical Duchesse motifs, more in the Ghent style, and quite well done.  No needlelace accents. Good treatment along the neckline with the single woven tally in the arches, this mirrors the filling in the flowers quite nicely.

Comments: A small Youghal collar. The seller wrote a book on Youghal, and has a good discussion of this lace.  This particular piece has a good design, but the technique is a bit off. Note especially the extra heavy cordonnet, whose attachment seems a little odd. And the picoted buttonholed mesh looks sloppy.  I’m wondering if this is a later piece.

Comments: A long collar of Burano – floral border all around with small sprigs used as esprits.  Good elegant design.
I get a lot of information from WordPress, which I use for LaceNews, including Internet searches that lead to this blog. One of the questions asked was ‘how rare is Burano lace?’.  I think I can answer that, since I keep very careful records of all the lace on Ebay (only about a third of those pieces actually make it to the Ebay Alerts). Of the 11,013 pieces that I’ve recorded since LaceNews started, only 58 were Burano. Compare that to 877 Point de Gaze pieces, and 900 Duchesse de Bruxelles, 832 Maltese, 830 bobbin and needle applique on machine net, 775 Honiton, 682 Duchesse de Bruges and Bloemwerk, then 416 for Chantilly. And so on.  I guess that answers that question.

Comments: A collar of Point de Gaze, no raised work. Note the widely spaced looped picots around the outside edge, sign of a particular manufacturer.  The design is simple and light with knots and rings used as decorative ‘mode fillings, sometimes as lines, sometimes filling the centers of flowers.

Comments: A fallcap of Irish Crochet.  Small, precise motifs many in a Gros Point style.  Good raised work around some motifs and as well as picoted rings. I think the picots are crocheted loops.  No symmetry to the design – it looks a bit thrown together. But the technique is quite interesting – very tightly worked.

Comments: An Irish Crochet collar with large motifs. The design is symmetric down the center.  Picots might be Clones knots, I’m not certain.  The motifs are tightly woven with shamrocks, pinwheels, various flowers.  The motifs are a bit large, but it seems to work well in the design.

Comments: An interesting Belgian needlelace frontpiece, both in design and technique. It has a combination of un-grounded work and Point de Gaze inserts without raised work. The clothwork has the same density throughout the whole piece. Extensive decorative ‘mode’ fillings, although they are fairly simple. Note the picoted double brides along the neckline, unusual. Comments: A Brussels Duchesse deep collar or dress front.  Raised petal rose in one Point de Gaze insert, other inserts have no raised work. Note the lines of decorative ‘mode’ fillings, nicely done. The Duchesse is a bit on The Bruges Bloemwerk side with fairly large motifs.  The scale of all the motifs seems a little large.
Provenance: None cited.

Damage: Some small holes in the ptG mesh. Some3 brides look like a twisted pair instead of a full 4-plait, wonder if this is original, although it doesn’t interrupt the design.

Comments: A set of Gros Point style cuffs with a matching choker collar. From some of the clothwork is done I think this might be a French piece.   Italy is a possibility, but the stitches don’t look right.  Very difficult to tell with these copies, they were made in several places.  This set has nicely shaped raised work, good filling stitches, but no special ornamentation.

Comments: Please look at all the listings by this seller; I’m showing two photos below from separate posts and only giving information for the bobbinlace.  For several weeks this seller has been listing short bobbinlace samples, along with some needlelace. I spoke with the seller who indicates they were purchased as a lot from an antique and vintage haberdashery dealer who specializes in buying up large batches of dead stock in France. They appear to have been part of a sample book at one point because some of them have glue on the backs. They come from the Craponne-Sur-Arzon area, and the bobbinlace looks typical of this area.  The needlelace samples, however, look very much like Viennese Art Nouveau lace, and were probably imported by the retailer.
This is a remarkable collection and is proving quite popular with buyers. Hopefully someone can help identify the manufacturer.

Comments: An oval tablecloth assembled from what looks like earlier pieces. These all appear to be Northern Italian, Milanese.  The center part and the scrolling wide border with 5-star ground around the edge are especially impressive. Comments: Black Honiton does come up occasionally – this is a rectangular shawl  applique on machine net.  Moving away from the snails/slugs stle, with three floral sprays at the ends, esprits of sprigs in the ground, and a fairly narrow border up the sides. Good woven tally leadwork fillings, and the net has been cut from behind some, but not all of them.

Comments: A narrow shawl of Brussels bobbinlace applique on net – I can’t tell from the photos if it is machine or droschel.  I suspect Machine, but would love to have a closer look (if it is droschel it would be a very late example). The design looks a lot like 18th c organization (especially the hexagonal mesh filling), but has a more later 19th c technique. Notably the needle-made decorative fillings. Quite an interesting piece.

Comments: A bertha collar of Punto de Milan, which is a pieced bobbinlace (Old Flanders) with a needle-made ground. The ground does resemble the Alençon ground, which no doubt accounts for the note on the tag. Nicely organized floral ground with overall fine work. I particularly like the little flowers along the neckline. This is a type of lace that often suffers from sloppy technique and coarser threads – not here.

Comments: A Point de Gaze fan with amber sticks and the original tassel. Raised petal roses with diamond windows.  The whole piece looks slightly off – the fan leaf doesn’t seem wide enough. But it does not appear to be cut down.  Excellent floral design, good decorative ‘mode’ fillings, technically rather sophisticated.  Point de Gaze with a lot of raised work throughout may not be the best material for a folding fan, and it does look a little bulky folded up.  I also like the sticks with their carved edges.
