Comments: An Irish Crochet dress front with attached choker collar. The collar-like form extends front and back, with shaped shoulder pieces. Tightly worked motifs with extensive raised work, Clones knots used as picots. The piece is right/left symmetric in design and the large center front motif repeats in the shoulders. Technically it is an impressive piece, although the design is crowded and a bit haphazard. Unusual form that to me doesn’t go together as a unit too well, or I’m speculating that the sleeve pieces are meant to go over a larger gigot sleeve that isn’t carried off too well shown on the manikin.

Comments: An interesting small collar of Honiton, and I think it has a needle-made ground. Snails/slugs style, and note the small bird motifs. Woven leadwork tally fillings used used in the main body of the piece, and note the use as radial spokes in the motifs along the edges. Design gets a little lost at the left end.

Comments: A linen bobbinlace border in the early 17th c Genoese style. I always urge caution in actually attributing something like this to that period. This one appears to have the dense compactness that is often seen in lace of this period, especially in the woven leaves. The foot edge worked as part of the lace, not as an addition is also a good sign. My overall impression is an earlier date.

Comments: A 2nd Genoese style bobbinlace which could be early 17th c, more elaborate than the previous piece. I couldn’t find anything similar in Ricci, however there are hints of the fan border in the scallops. It has a good compact denseness in all parts, including the woven leaves. The foot edge is a bit unusual, and I think there’s a technical issue not quite solved in the scallops resulting in an asymmetry. I am a little bothered by the fuzziness of the thread in places, but that might just be general wear.
