Comments: Mario Vellani-Marchi (1895-1979) was a painter, draughtsman, printmaker, stage designer and illustrator. He worked for many years in Burano and produced a number of images of lacemakers. One of the most famous is “La Rossina merlettaia”. This is not that work, but a similar one with apparently impeccable provenance.
And the seller takes Paypal!
Sale ended on Dec 23rd, no known bids. I emailed the seller, who said the work would be relisted along with several others. He has also contributed a lovely comment to this post.
The piece has been relisted for $495,000.00. He also shows a few other Vellani-Marchi Burano lacemaker portraits in the posting.

Thank you for the information on lace. I’m the one with the painting and did another search on the internet and came up with this while researching lace. Honestly, I do not know anything about lace or Vellani Marchi and have been having such a wonderful time reading all the information out there. I have 8 different mid century modern art paintings with only 4 of those that I can decipher the artist signature. I was hopeing to list as many as I could at the same time for maximum visability. I have given myself to this weekend to do that or just the four will be listed. After my research, and if I sell any of these paintings, my goal is to visit Milan and then Burneo. I want to go where Mario went.
