Offered by: Ebay seller nelliegardener, Evanston, Illinois, United States
Comments: A banquet-sized tablecloth and napkins of probably Italian needlelace and free reticella, with provenance. It’s a fairly heavy design that does not appear to have been much used. A little light staining.  The ground decoration is quite interesting, but the flower and leaf motifs are a bit conventional. The very best of these pieces have extensive figural work – this one is a bit plain.

Comments: Painting, oil on plywood, of a Flemish lacemaker around the 1930’s. I have no idea if this is original or a copy. The Belgian artist is Charly Leonard (1894-1953). I really have no expertise in painting, but I thought it was quite lovely. Unfortunately to look up auction prices for painters these days you have to subscribe to an online service so I’ll leave that as an exercise for the interested bidder.

Sold for 325.00 EUR, 1 bidder.

Comments: Lacemakers footstool from Canton d’Arlanc, a small village in Southeast Puy de Dôme. It has an unusual slatted top, and appears in very good condition. Seller states that the wood is beech, at least that’s how I think the phrase bois de hêtre is translated. Excellent seller, I’ve gotten a number of equipment pieces from him.

Sold for 12.50 EUR, 1 bidder.

Offered by: Ebay seller sugarbaby2011, The North Pole, Canada
Comments: Hard to tell where this handkerchief edge is from – it shares characteristics with Beds, Cluny, Spanish, Maltese, German guipures, and in areas where lacemaking was started as a missionary effort. Publication of designs like this in the late 19th early 20th centuries doesn’t help attribution much. And because of this indeterminacy, and the slightly heavy thread, it doesn’t often get a lot of respect. But this is a piece with a lot of impact, well made and in very good condition.  Thread looks like linen, which could favor a German origin.

Comments: Bruges Bloemwerk handkerchief with a name embroidered in the cloth. Conventional motifs, picoted bride ground.  Looks in good condition from what I see, but there aren’t many closeups.

Comments: Bruges Bloemwerk collar with well-worked motifs and bride ground. This seems to be a week for this kind of lace on Ebay, and this particular piece is a very good example of the technique. The motifs are closely worked, and it almost looks like cutwork.  Condition looks very good, and the absence of any wear on the neckline makes it look almost unused.

Comments: Flounce of Brussels Application on machine net. Basically bobbinlace with little needlelace grids as fillings. the design is fairly simple – undulating waves with flowers in the spaces. No special treatment of the blank ground above the design. There are a number of holes in the net, and condition of the net is very important in a piece like this.

   Sold for $60.99, 5 bidders.

Comments: A dress front of Brugges bobbinlace, with varied fillings and a double picoted bride ground. There is a little needlelace decoration in the centers of some flowers that mirrors similar work in Point de Gaze, but not exactly. Enough to mark it as a Belgian product. I don’t quite buy the asymmetric design in the bib – but overall it’s a more ambitious design than usually seen. Condition looks very good, seller cites some discoloration and a straggling thread here and there.

   Sold for $49.99, 1 bidder.

Offered by: Ebay seller discover4, London, United Kingdom
Comments: A Snails/Slugs period Honiton handkerchief. Bride ground, grids of tallies used as fillings.  Note the rather continuous tape-like pattern of the motifs, a very characteristic 18th century Devon trait – the S/S designs are an outgrowth of that technique. This is a typical example, well made and in very good condition. A few small stains, a few pulled threads, all very minor.

Offered by: Ebay seller discover4, London, United Kingdom
Comments: Honiton to a collector can be many things – motifs with a bride ground (Honiton guipure), with a needlelace ground (Honiton Point), and Honiton applique on machine net. This is an example of the applique, and it is meant to compete with contemporary Brussels applique on machine net. The Honiton motifs are larger and usually have more extensive fillings than the Belgian product. Devon workers were competing with Belgium, and needed a product that could be turned out quickly at a reasonable price. This is a good example, the motifs are not very sophisticated, generally patterned on the usual snail/slugs of the guipure product.  As with all machine applique, condition of the net to a collector is extremely important – it is extremely difficult to repair. I see a few pinholes in the net in this piece, and one or two loose spots in the motifs (e.g., the left endpoint).  But it is unusual for the small size, normally Honiton applique was used for larger veils and scarves.

Starting price:  49.99 GBP
Auction ends: Oct 03, 2011 08:49:17 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller discover4, London, United Kingdom
Comments: A Maltese silk bertha. This is a little unusual form for Maltese/Gozoian lace, normally they went more for borders and larger pieces like shawls. This piece has a typical three-part construction, the inner, middle, and outer edges were made separately and sewn together. I like the rosettes of leaves in the center section, this is unusual. Note the ‘kat stitch’ alternating with the Maltese crosses in the outer edge. There is some fraying – I particularly note spots in along the inside edge and the end terminations.

Sold for 49.99 GBP, 1 bidder.

Auction ends: Oct 03, 2011 09:41:00 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller vieuxjeuvintage, Willow Cottage, Lancashire, United Kingdom
Comments: A Maltese silk mantilla – oval headpiece with long lappets. the top part of the oval can be folded over to form a kind of double collar. The center roundel flares out into the lappets with some good guipure work. The pattern is basically Mltese cross alternating with small rosettes, and there is an extensive ground of woven leaves, well done. Condition looks very good, although overall it appears a bit wrinkled. Sign of washing? Maybe. It is a bit on the heavy side for this form, but an impressive piece.

Sold for 89.15 GBP, 6 bidders.

Comments: A silk Maltese scarf with lappet ends, much lighter than the previous example. The leafwork along the edges is quite open, and note the use of windows in the Maltese crosses. A little frayed, but overall good condition.

   No bids.

Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: Collar and cuff sets that survive together don’t come along too often. These are Duchesse de Bruxelles, with unusually shaped raised leaf roses. The needlelace fillings in the roses are several concentric half circles of rings – unusual. There is a slight asymmetry to the design that is quite nice. They do seem a little wrinkled, and I see a few separations between motifs, but overall good condition.

Comments: Bertha collar of Duchesse de Bruxelles. The needlelace inserts have roses with a single raised petal. Motifs are quite standard for this lace, with some raised work in the bobbinlace. I don’t see any major problems in condition in the photos.

$86.00, 5 bidders, reserve not met.

Starting price:  $25.99
Auction ends: Oct 04, 2011 13:43:24 PDT
Offered by: Ebay klaraanna2006, Budapest, Budapest, Hungary
Comments: Metallic laces in this width and condition are pretty rare.  it has been fastened onto a velvet band – not sure of the original intent. The ‘thread’ is normally trips of plated metal (gold here) wound around a silk core – you can see the silk showing through in a few places.  sometimes flat narrow strips are used as thread and woven into the design, especially in torchon-like fans. Design in laces like this are usually Torchon based – this one has some unusual work on the 6-petaled flowers. Spain or France, there’s little reliable information on the history of lace like this.  Condition is helped a lot by the backing, often these are badly contracted and it takes a lot of work to get them to lie flat.
