Comments: Don’t be put off by how damaged the sticks look on this fan. Repairs are possible but best left to an expert who could probably put this piece in very good order. The lace is Point de Gaze, no raised work, but that’s OK for a folding fan. Not a lot of decorative ‘mode’ fillings, but the design is tight and fills the space well. I like the swags on the outer edge. The lace condition looks very good – I don’t see any problems from the photos. A bit hard to tell the lace color – it is mounted on red silk (which has some glue traces from past repairs). Some of the photos look white, some more ivory.

Comments: An Irish Crochet small collar. Design of shamrocks and flowers, raised work in roses and motif centers. The picots are crocheted loops. The design is symmetric but seems a little haphazard. Gives it a certain charm. Condition looks very good – seller does cite yellowing, although not very obvious from the photos.

Comments: A narrow, reasonably long border of Point de Gaze of simple design. No raised work or elaborate fillings. It is a short repeat designed to be ruffled. A few localized small holes, but overall good condition.

Comments: A Maltese border, well done with a typical undulating pattern on bottom and a simple leaf border at the top. I’ve been studying Consiglia Azzopardi’s book on Gozo Lace, and the woven leaves are called ‘moska’. The term for the Maltese cross is Salib Tal-Kavallieri. The round motif I think is a flower, or it might be a modified sun pattern. Normally the sun has a much larger center. Seller cites some age discoloration and mild fraying at ends, basically very good condition.

Comments: A narrow scarf of Carrickmacross applique on machine net, with guipure inserts at the ends. Note the shamrock designs throughout. Seller cites a ‘few small holes here and there’, hard to access since there are no closeups. But from what I can see it looks in overall good condition.

Comments: Another Duchesse collar, this time with Point de Gaze inserts at the ends – looks like pansies. No raised work in the needlelace, but there is some in the bobbinlace. The collar is nicely shaped to lay flat for the front hanging ends. I can’t see any problems from the photos – looks in very good condition.

Comments: A Brussels Duchesse bertha. The photos are a bit fuzzy and I can’t tell if the Point de Gaze inserts have raised petals. Good dense design, typically standard motifs. The condition is very good con this one, only one trivial separation on an outer flower border.

Comments: At first I thought this lace had some color in it, but I was fooled by the blue background. It is a fascinating black and white (or ecru) guipure, in a very collectible length. As to where it was made – difficult to tell. I don’t know if the thread is the silk you would expect from Le Puy, and the picoted square mesh doesn’t have the 6-pointed star normally used. It does have the wheat ear motif seen in Le Puy, and there’s no gimp – but also no extensive large areas of guipure that would be expected. I’m wondering if this isn’t Easter European, maybe Mikchailov? That lace does have the bi-color elements, but tends to be more on the Torchon side. I other words I’m baffled by this great piece. There are some separations and a few problems with the header, but all that’s is pretty minor. Overall good condition.

Comments: The shape is a bit unusual, maybe a long but narrow rectangular shawl? Almost like a bertha with a deeply pointed center. Entirely Point de Gaze needlelace – no raised work. The design has lots of wonderful iris and rose-like flowers. Note the more solid almost Venise-type design with brides along the outer edge. You see this sometimes in Zele needlelaces, although that specific attribution is difficult. There more than a few small holes in the mesh, difficult to repair, so condition is good, but not great. I don’t mind it much since this is such an unusual piece.

Comments: I was so intrigued by the documentation on this piece that I thought I’d talk about it. The lace seems to be hand made Valenciennes, and the note attached says “I made this hanky in 1903 – EC.W. Does this mean that the person (who is writing in English) made the lace? Or just assembled the piece? The lace does appear to fit the design, not pieced together. The work is nicely done with good drawnwork on the edges of the linen. The linen is often detached along those points, however, and there are some stains in the center linen. So the lace condition looks good, but the linen is short of good, and difficult to repair along the breaks. I do wish it had been photographed on a darker background, and that there were some closeups of the lace so one could verify the stitch structure.

Comments: Ex. coll. Pat Earnshaw. One of the more unusual Irish Crochet collars I’ve ever seen. The motifs are flat and tightly worked. Look at the ground which is almost like a Maltese leaf mesh. But it appears to be made from an elongated knot. I’m also not sure how the lacemaker made the cord that winds through the design either. It all reminds me of the quote from an early Irish Crochet worker who says she could make ‘ever so much money’ if she happens on a new stitch. Irish Crochet is a continual surprise. Looks in very good condition.
