http://tinyurl.com/lvfygeu Lovely Piece of Antique Bucks Lace 31″ x 3-5/8″
Size: 3-5/8″ x 31″
Starting Price: 9.49 GBP
Auction ends: June 3, 2013 10:22:11 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller isohex, Tyne-Wear,, United Kingdom
Comments:  Short segment of a floral Bucks border. At least bucks is probable on this one, but note the use of kat stitch instead of the more common honeycomb as fillings. The design is a bit plain, although I think it’s more delicate than the photos seem due to the narrow width. Looks in very good condition. Wish there were more.

360665599144   Sold for 59.87 GBP, 5 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/m68e2nl Antique/vintage 19th century Brussels applique lace shawl collar
Size: 64″ neck edge including flounce. Back 17″
Starting Price: 24.95 GBP
Auction ends: June 3, 2013 11:07:16 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments:  A 2-part shawl of muslin applique on machine net, almost a mantilla form. The center triangular piece is edged with a deep flounce. The photos aren’t close enough to tell how the applique was done, tambour or overcast, so it’s hard to attribute an origin. I’m guessing Belgium. Seller cites 2 tiny repairs and slight back neck edge yellowing. It’s an impressive looking piece in very good condition.

230988405304   Sold for 113.00 GBP, 7 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/msbz4dx Antique/vintage Bedfordshire lace 2 yards 28 ins.
Size: 2.5″ x 2 yards 28″
Starting Price: 8.00 GBP
Auction ends: June 3, 2013 11:52:02 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments:  A solid-looking plaited border, probably Beds. The thread seems a little thicker relative to the design than usually seen, and the ‘point ground’ fillings are unusual. Looks in very good condition.

230988436552   Sold for 8.00 GBP, 1 bidder.

http://tinyurl.com/kpskzyg Filet Lace Storks or Cranes – Story Centerpiece
Size: ~21″ across
Starting Price: $15.00
Auction ends: June 3, 2013 15:01:44 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller lacemerchant, Chicago, Illinois, United States
Comments:  It’s a little big for a handkerchief, but a little small for a table linen. Filet embroidery, and the design is an interesting, naturalistic design of storks, different on all sides. Good condition despite the unfortunate small hole in the center cloth.

140985688595   Sold for $28.00, 3 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/ls44v35 ORNATE CANTU LACE TABLECLOTH 118″ by 60″
Size: 60″ x 118″
Starting Price: $495.00
Auction ends: June 3, 2013 16:49:46 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Irvington, New York, United States
Comments:  An Italian figural bobbinlace, probably related to Cantu, but without the typical scrolling hooks and flowerheads. It is a large piece that looks a little bit thrown together with the nested rectangles and ovals. Not everything matches well. Still it’s a large bobbinlace work in a style that you don’t see too often. I see a few holes, and linen collectors are likely to nitpick about the lack of matching napkins (if there ever were any). Basically good condition.

Starting Price: $45.00 with reserve
Auction ends: June 4, 2013 06:57:25 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Irvington, New York, United States
Comments:  Ex. coll. Duchesse de Berry. A rectangular shawl of Brussels bobbinlace application on machine net, with a few simple needlelace ornaments used as fillings.  The design looks naturalistic and rather impressive. The bobbinlace motifs appear well done with pretty good weaving technique. Condition looks good, there are a few well-done repairs in the tulle and scattered small openings.

Auction ends: June 4, 2013 07:39:07 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Irvington, New York, United States
Comments:  A cap back of Brussels bobbinlace with droschel ground, 1740-50. Note the figural bird and butterflies, similar to Ebay #330930001682. Dense design with finely worked motifs, note some snowflake variation fillings, and a little bridework, typical of this lace. A few minor holes and stains, overall good condition for the age.

http://tinyurl.com/lhrhaw4 ANTIQUE LACE-RARE EARLY ITALIAN CUTWORK LADIES BONNET
Size: not given
Starting Price: $45.00 with reserve
Auction ends: June 4, 2013 07:41:15 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Irvington, New York, United States
Comments:  Wow. Hmmm.  A cap with reticella panels, very dense.  It sort of resembles patterns found in Giovanni Ostaus, “La verra perfettionne del disegno”, Venice 1557, but not exactly. That has some of the same diagonal bandwork and circular motifs, but also includes some picot work not seen here.  So one might call this Italian late 16th c. Or you can give up and say we really don’t know how to date pieces that might be this early, which is very true. Flanders did similar work, but much lighter in texture. The coif shape is not inconsistent with the period, and this might have been only part of a more formal headdress. The condition looks very good, especially if it really is this old. Maybe a little too good.

151054783831   Sold for $295.00, 4 bidders.

Size: ~14″ square
Starting Price: $45.00 with reserve
Auction ends: June 4, 2013 07:47:30 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Irvington, New York, United States
Comments:  A Point de Gaze handkerchief, no raised work.  The only decorative ‘modes’ are heavy picoted single rings.  Good design and technique.  A few small holes in the mesh, basically good condition.

390603980324   $169.49, 7 bidders, reserve not met.

http://tinyurl.com/k924cmr ANTIQUE LACE-CIRCA 18TH C.LAPPET W/HAND MADE GROUND
Size: 3.5″ x 32″ (each, I think)
Starting Price: $45.00 with reserve
Auction ends: June 4, 2013 08:37:54 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Irvington, New York, United States
Comments:  A pair of joined Brussels bobbinlace lappets with droschel ground. ~1780’s.  I’ll assume the ground was worked around the motifs with threads carrying over on the back, not appliqued. The long length of these lappets is typical of the period. I have a set quite like these, with the same square tally and plaited fillings.  I think I see a few pinholes in the mesh, but overall they are in very good condition.

Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments:  A wide Beds collar, where the work on the guipure leaves enclosed in crossed trails is a feature of this lace.  Looks in very good condition.

Starting Price: 14.95 GBP

Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments:  A Chantilly fallcap with diamond shaped headpiece and lappet ends. Very black in color with simple honeycomb pieces, probably a Belgian piece. This one looks in very good condition. Smaller shaped Chantilly pieces don’t come up that often.

330931244287   Sold for 19.25 GBP, 3 bidders.

Size: 7″ deep
Starting Price: $48.00
Auction ends: June 4, 2013 12:19:58 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller cory4ever, Nashville, Tennessee, United States
Comments:  A Maltese collar with good guipure work at the neckline and outer edge. I like the roundels in the middle, almost like snowflakes. Looks in very good condition, although perhaps just a little rough at the neckline closing corner.  This seller is listing some good smaller pieces this week.

181149176073   Sold for $67.00, 3 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/m8nh7tm ANTIQUE 18thC HANDMADE MILANESE BOBBIN LACE PANEL 11 FEET LONG – ANIMALS c1750
Size: 9″ x 11 feet
Starting Price: 29.99 GBP
Auction ends: June 4, 2013 14:45:43 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller pallett56, Kent, United Kingdom
Comments:  A Milanese tape lace with plaited 6-pointed star ground. It has some delightful animals placed among the foliage. Interesting, one end of the piece has good decoration of the tape, the other is rather plain as if it were the work of another hand. Haven’t had time to see if the design is consistent through the entire length.  I would agree with the mid 18th c date, maybe a little earlier. Overall good condition, just a few small holes mainly at one end.

230989231653   Sold for 281.00 GBP, 4 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/n76z7u5 Vintage Duchesse Bobbin Net Lace collar Trim Handmade Honiton? Figural
Size: 24″ long (neckline?), 4″ widest at center
Starting Price: $29.99
Auction ends: June 4, 2013 18:18:57 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller drb3905, Ocala, Florida, United States
Comments:  A collar of Honiton Point lace, meaning bobbin-made motifs with a needle-made ground. Motifs are nicely done, a little snails/slugs, but definitely breaking out of that mode.  The design is quite dense, fairly symmetric, but a little haphazard. Actually rather charming. Looks in very good condition.

Auction ends: June 5, 2013 06:42:26 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller discover4, London, United Kingdom
Comments:  A hat veil of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net.  Although the motifs are well done, it’s a fairly plain design with an inside flower band emphasizing the lower two corners.  No esprits in the ground. Condition appears very good, I see a few spots and seller cites very minor pulls.

http://tinyurl.com/kt6kxab Antique/vintage 18th century bobbin lace edge – flowers, leaves and seed heads
Size: 1.75″ x 40″
Starting Price: 9.95 GBP
Auction ends: June 5, 2013 11:08:11 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments:  A Flemish bobbinlace border with droschel ground, around 1740.  The ground is not aligned exactly straight along the lace, but works around the motifs. This is sometimes a sign of English work, but it’s very difficult to decide between the two. This border has a rather dense design with slightly larger motifs, with a Brabant design feel. Seller sites slight damage to top edge in 2 places and several small holes – minor for the age of the piece. Overall good condition.

Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Irvington, New York, United States
Comments: Filet embroidery or Lacis,  Fecit AD 1612  – Made in AD 1612. Maybe.  This kind of work was done extensively in Italy in the 20th century with some very fine pieces produced. Design range from historical copies to documentation of more modern events. I have one depicting the landing of Columbus. This one has some kind of armorial design in the center. The thread looks like linen, but one can’t really tell just from a photo. The embroidery is well done and very even. Early lacis work for a piece this size (see plate 94 in Levey’s “Lace: A History”, dated 1623), tended to be made up of smaller pieces which were more easily held in the hand for working. Unlike this piece. And the date in plate 94 is written as ‘ovs ad 1633’ with the ad letters combined in some kind of symbol.  I also wish there were closeups of the edging, that might give more hints.
I’m afraid the date of this piece is going to have to be decided by detailed thread analysis and dating.
Numerous small holes, especially in the lower right corner. Which for a truly early piece isn’t a problem.

Comments: A dress front of Honiton guipure.  Good quality, breaking out of snails/slugs era a bit.  The design has that scattered crowded English garden feel. Condition looks very good.

Comments: A collar of Bruges Bloemwerk.  Well done motifs, but the whole design seems a bit crowded.  Lace looks in good shape, seller cites some small age spots and neck discoloration – overall good condition.

Starting Price: 10.00 EUR
Auction ends: June 6, 2013 11:14:48 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller nhtfcww, bientot chez vous, France
Comments: Most French pliors have fairly standard chip carved designs, sometimes with openwork.  This is a dated (1971) example with initials, of a crucifixion scene. It is different front and back.  The warpage and patina on this piece look good, but still buyer beware.  Looks in very good condition, no chips or cracks that I can see.

Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A Long, rectangular Maltese scarf.  Alternating sun and cross roundels on the outsice, and abbreviated crosses down the center section.  The end crosses have far more than the normal number of woven leaves radiating off the center.  Seller cites a few small repairs, and occasional thread breaks. Generally good condition.

Offered by: Ebay seller slavart, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States
Comments: Two short and one long length of the same insertion. This is a tape lace with some very interesting treatment of the tape itself. Gives it a very bold appearance. I think it is probably an Eastern European lace, but where I’m really not sure. I don’t think Russia because of the lack of a gimp.  Hungary isn’t a bad guess. Perhaps readers have a suggestion?  A few age spots, but overall very good condition.

Auction ends: June 6, 2013 16:56:39 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Irvington, New York, United States
Comments: I definitely agree with the seller in that the ‘museum’ made a mistake in de-accessioning these – but all the better for collectors.  I also think they tend toward Alençon with the réseau fin, and the well-done ‘mode’ fillings.  Yet the clothwork itself has a kind of fine Belgian needlelace feel.  Perhaps this is one of those examples of work done in Flanders and finished in France.  The condition is absolutely exceptional – occasional pinhole is trivial. It will be a long time before something of this quality hits the market again.
