Comments:  Ex coll Pat Earnshaw. A pieced bobbinlace border with droschel ground, 3rd quarter 18th c. One  join in about the center, and I think it’s cut down at the top from a larger piece. Many of the motifs aren’t complete at the upper edge. The motifs are tightly woven, good technique but a little plain in design. Some interesting fillings. It has an English Devon look, although we don’t know all that much about how to distinguish Belgian and English pieces from this period. Condition is short of good with many pulls in the ground, some small brown stains, and that join.

Comments:  A triangular shawl of Brussels bobbinlace application on machine net. It is a bit small, the really spectacular shawls of this lace tend to measure in excess of 60″ x 120″. Still, it seems to do a good design job in the slightly smaller space. There is some strange neck treatment, a gather just below the upper back, and a wire sewn onto at least part of the top edge, as if someone were trying to create a collar piece.  Some holes in the tulle and discoloration in one corner, and I’m not sure what damage the ‘additions’ have done, if any. Basically is looks in good condition.

Comments:  A two-piece Edwardian gown with an unusual opportunity to see Maltese lace on a garment. There is a dress front with attached collar, lace covering the sleeves, bodice and attached to the skirt.  Seller indicates the fabric is silk. I won’t guess at the purpose of this garment, but it would be typical of a white day dress in Edwardian times for a very well to do family. Seller cites age yellowing and mild soiling, some loose spots in the lace with fraying at the sleeve edge. Other stains and defects noted in the listing, basically good condition.

Comments:  A black silk Le Puy guipure narrow border.  Le Puy is famous for innovative grounds, here you see a kind of spider pattern. Another typical sign, motifs done in small areas of point ground.  This piece is nicely done, especially considering the narrow width. Seller cites 4 minor breaks and 2 larger holes, but doesn’t say where these are along the length.  Basically good condition, but I’d be a little concerned about those holes.

Comments:  A triangular dress insert of Duchesse de Bruxelles, meaning duchesse bobbinlace with a Point de Gaze insert. Raised petals on the Point de Gaze rose. I’m impressed with the quality of the design and the technique on this piece. Note the interesting areas of half stitch in the trefoil leaves, also lots of bobbinlace raised work. Comments:  Ex coll Pat Earnshaw.  Good examples of Belgian needlelace with droschel ground. The fillings are fairly elaborate, and there is the possibility that the elaborate fillings were done in France.  We find references to this procedure in literature, but don’t really know how to verify it.  The design is a good mid 18th century patten, quite detailed and crisp. The technique can be excellent – note the decorations within the little flower buds – raised work within the cloth stitch. Numerous small holes in the ground and one join in the narrower piece. Condition is a bit short of good, although that doesn’t matter much for pieces this rare.

Comments:  A rectangular shawl of a point ground lace, difficult to determine origin. Bucks is a possibility, but the fillings don’t look right. Or perhaps a Lille, however it seems to play with some shading by, I think, using threads of different weights in the flowers. One place that does do that kind of work is Bayeux, however there it was more a contrast between half and whole stitch. Although the overall design has a sort of Normandy flavor with the heavy borders at the ends.
So this one is definitely a puzzle.  That lower border also seems cut at the ends with the outer border added later. I’m going to go out on a limb on this one, I think the main body is machine tulle, and the esprits embroidered on. The nets in the two parts just don’t look the same, and I don’t see the racroc strips in the main body that I would expect. How it is joined to the lower edges is a puzzle. Wish I could get this one under the microscope. Overall looks in good condition.
