Comments: A deep collar or shawl of Duchesse de Bruges bobbinlace. Quite a dense design with the typical Bruges ‘islands’ in the brides. Seller cites 2 broken brides, adn you can see some isolated staining. Basically very good condition.

Comments: A deep flounce of Brussels bobbinlace application on machine net.  I’m wondering if it’s actually Honiton, the motifs are a little big with large areas of fillings. And the net has that soft white look that you find in Honiton.  Hard to tell.  I think the fillings are needlelace, but not enough closeups to say for certain. The design is fairly simple, with just one line of sprigs in the upper ground, close to the lower border. Seller cites a few tiny openings – I can’t find them in the photos. Basically very good condition.

Comments: A lappet scarf of Maltese – 3 layer construction. Outer border is a series of flower roundels. Inner section has some dense guipure, Maltese cross variations with a full cross at the ends. Between these two is an insertion of woven leaf crosses.  Looks in generally very good condition, I can’t see anything wrong from the photos.

Comments: A collar of Duchesse de Bruges with pointed edge formed by regular leaf patterned ovals. The neckline is a simple row of buds, inside is a scattered symmetric arrangement of flowers and leaves. Overall quite a nice design. A few raised edges on the leaves, and typical meandering plaited picoted brides. No needlelace fillings. A few brides look a little loose, but not broken. Basically very good condition.

Offered by: Ebay seller  eastayton, London, England, United Kingdom
Comments: An impressive Flemish bobbinlace border, late 17th or early 18th c. It has the symmetric design resembling contemporary Point de France needlelace, but with a density and slightly larger motifs that might favor an early 18th c origin. The question you have to ask in a piece like this is, has it been cut down from a larger piece. Here I’m a little worried, some of the motifs along the engurelure look a little abruptly terminated.  Difficult to say without some closeups of that edge. I’m also puzzled about the arrangement of motifs along the lower edge. They don’t follow the symmetry of the main pattern. Not sure what to say here, since on the face of it, everything looks original. Wish I could get this piece under the microscope.
As far as condition goes, for a piece this age, it’s as good as you will every see.

Comments: Louis XV Mechlin designs are so nicely arranged that one can make mirror images by folding a border back on itself, and make all kinds of larger pieces. You see this in lappets and cap backs. Here the match is offset, but it still has a nice flow.  The lace itself seems a little heavy, with rather simple fillings. And the condition is short of good, with many small holes.

Comments: Mechlin lappets, mid 18th c. design. Mechlin did experiment a lot with grounds, here there is a 6-sided star ‘fond chant’ arrangement – very unusual. And the fillings in the chain ring motifs look like the regular Mechlin mesh. So the meshes seem to have been reversed in function.  One other thing, there isn’t a detailed photo of the midsection, but if I look hard I don’t seem to see a join (a more detailed photo would resolve this). So this one is a bit of a puzzle and a bit odd – I wonder if it is a later piece.  I see several tiny holes in the meshes throughout the piece, and the seller cites some localized staining. Generally good condition.

Comments: A border of Gros Point needlelace.  You can basically follow the design along the length, a little difficult to do, but it does look largely intact. Which is extremely unusual for Gros Point – not that there aren’t a few parts that look a little pieced together. Very heavy borders, and overall the clothwork and ornamentation is quite simple. No brides, which is also a little unusual. And the picoted border looks like a replacement. The plain work is usually a sign of an earlier piece in the history of Gros Point – mid 17th c is a good first guess. But we always have to be careful here, it’s a confusing subject, and very little of this lace survives in even reasonable shape.  The condition looks very good for the age.

Comments: A later 19th c Point de Gaze handkerchief – a deep border of lace with good decorative ‘mode’ fillings. The roses have a single raised layer of petals. Elaborate romantic design, typical of the period. Seller indicates the center has been replaced – it might help a bit if the cloth backing the edge motifs were cut away so their decoration could better show. I see an occasional pinhole in the mesh – basically very good condition.

Comments: A Chantilly shawl, 3rd quarter 19th century.  I very much appreciate the excellent photo of the whole piece laid flat. A naturalistic floral design, quite dense in pattern. The delicacy of the work probably indicates a French origin.  No ombre shading.  An impressive piece. I don’t see any condition problems from the photos – not even a pinhole. Generally very good condition (which is my highest condition rating).

Comments: Two Mechlin borders from the same length. Mid 19th c, usually these were made of cotton with linen gimps.  Good design, meant to be ruffled – flowers along a lower border with several rows of esprit buds above. Very light, as befits a ‘Summer’ lace.  Each piece has one join, and there are some pulls and frays in the mesh, minor. Generally good condition.

Comments: An unusual cape of Duchesse de Bruges. I think the neckline is a modification, although I wish there were more detailed photos of this area. The pattern reminds me of what you often see in Spanish mantillas – a regular patterned inner section with decorative borders.  The work here is well done, unusual overall patterning for this kind of lace. A little raised work, no needlelace fillings that I can see. Some damage to the edge in the lower right part.  Basically good condition.

Comments: A Maltese lappet scarf, quite light in design. Two layer construction – an outer series of flower roundels, with an inner part of Maltese crosses.  Might be one break along the edge at one end, but basically very good condition. This is a nice contrast with the third piece reviewed above.

Comments: An impressive large fan, of well, Brussels Duchesse for lack of a better name. There are very large areas of finely worked Point de Gaze bordered with small bobbinlace motifs. Reminds me of the best in Point de Angleterre tradition. No raised petals – it doesn’t need any. In the upper corners is what seems to be a ‘Zele’ type Belgian Venice lace. The decorative ‘mode’ fillings are very well worked.  Bobbinlace motifs around the edges.  The sticks are carved and gilded, seller says ‘faux’ ivory – I’ll take their word for it, I’m not an expert here. I don’t see any condition problems with the lace, and no notes on any problems with the sticks, other than the missing rivet holding it all together.

Comments: This seller has just posted a number of lots with several pieces, many quite good. I’ll just highlight one here. Two short borders, one of Brussels Application on machine net, the other of Alençon.  The Brussels has a good mid 19th c naturalistic romantic design, looks in basically very good condition. The Alençon appears to have a buttonholed bride ground on top, réseau fin on the bottom, a typical later 18th century arrangement. Condition is short of good with many pulls and repairs.

Comments: A pair of Youghal cuffs.  They are complete in themselves, not adapted from a longer length.  Good design for such small pieces, with some simple ring fillings. A few tiny holes in the lighter mesh, generally good condition.

Comments: I think this is a Milanese border, basically because of the irregular rectangular mesh.   A rather meandering design, with the tapes almost breaking off into separate motifs. A few windows in the tapes, and some simple fillings.  A bit worn but not bad considering the age. Generally good condition.

Comments: A light, narrow border of Point de Gaze, no raised work. It has a few decorative ‘mode’ fillings, and the vertical design fills the space well with a short repeat.  Looks in generally good condition, not enough photos to do a detailed analysis.

380702808786   Sold for 57.00 GBP, 10 bidders.

Comments: An interesting shawl collar of Honiton. It has that rather thrown together English flower garden appearance, which can be quite charming. So close that the background color has a hard time showing through in the photo. Definitely out of the snails/slugs esthetic, with nicely modeled roses and thistles. Some other flower, maybe a morning glory? around the edges.  Condition is a bit rough, several separations around the edges, but these tend to be localized. It is also rather wrinkled.  I’ll rate it as basically good condition.
