Comments: A bertha of Brussels Duchesse. No raised work in either the bobbinlace or Point de Gaze inserts. The bobbinlace is a bit loosely worked, and with the simple gimp outlines, a little on the Bruges side.

Comments: A shawl collar of Duchesse de Bruges (meaning no needlelace inserts), with long points. Note the additional flowers attached to the neckline, and the large daisy-like flowers along the outer edge. The design looks a bit windswept, but it works well.

Comments: A pair of Brussels Duchesse cuffs. No raised work in the Point de Gaze inserts. None in the bobbinlace either. Good basic technique, rather conventional motifs, I like the overall design.

Comments: A small collar of Valenciennes. You see so many borders of Val, it is nice to see complete pieces. The design is a bit simplistic, but I like the looped scalloped outer edge. That’s a nice finish for this kind of lace. I’m thinking this was made in pieces, the roundels, neckline, and outer edge all made separately.

Comments: A matching set of Duchesse collar and cuffs. The motifs are fairly large, which in the cuffs actually contrasts nicely with the bride ground. The collar looks a little out of proportion relative to the large cuffs. Good, tight technique (maybe Ghent?), and some nice raised work in the bobbinlace.

Size: 15″ x 2 yards 31″

Auction ends: Oct 28, 10:47:10 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: Ex. coll. Pat Earnshaw. A rectangular shawl of Spanish ret-fi blonde bobbinlace. Black silk, with the typical narrow arabesque-like designs. Note the large areas of 6 pointed star fillings, very typical of Spanish work. The lace looks to have been made in strips around 3″ wide.
Condition:
Modifications: This, as is typical of many Spanish blondes, is an assembled piece, with the border at the ends added separately.
Damage: The mesh looks a little pulled in places, almost as if a different quality of thread was used in some of the strips. No really large holes, but some small ones due to the pulling.
Soilage: Hard to tell because of the black color, but nothing obvious.

Size: 6″ x 12.5 feet
Starting Price: 49.99 GBP
Auction ends: Oct 28, 11:42:07 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller pallett56, Kent, United Kingdom
Comments: I’d say this is a Northern Italian or maybe one of the Aquila mid Italian varieties. Good symmetric undulating design with some tape decoration. The tape is a little thick than one finds in l’Aquila work, and the tape decoration and windows are more typical of Milanese. Kind of a mix. Likely 18th c, although this was a product made in many time periods. I think it is finer than it looks in the photos, only 6″ wide.
Condition:
Modifications: One join 27″ from one end.
Damage: One repair, top edge somewhat worn in places.
Soilage: Some rust marks.

Size: 4″ x 11 feet
Starting Price: 29.99 GBP
Auction ends: Oct 28, 12:18:34 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller pallett56, Kent, United Kingdom
Comments: I’ll call this a later 18th c Milanese piece, although with only about 80% certainty. It might be from the same school as the piece reviewed above, although the design is not symmetric. There is some play and variation in the tape which is quite interesting, and the work is tightly woven. Note, no brides, and the looped picots on the edges of all the motifs is a bit unusual. Normally it would be more finished, which makes me think this is a later piece.
Condition:
Modifications: One join 4″ from one end. Ends cut.
Damage: Top edge worn, probably from having been sewn to something else. Some places in the tape where attachments have come loose, causing holes.
Soilage: Looks white and clean.

Size: 5.5″ x 23″
Starting Price: 29.99 GBP
Auction ends: Oct 28, 12:24:04 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller pallett56, Kent, United Kingdom
Comments: It is tempting to call this an early piece because it has so many early Italian characteristics. The well done drawnwork for the reticella, the embroidery on the finished cloth bands. However it looks a little too well done, and the little zigzag element borders aren’t very typical of early Italian lace. I’ll go with a 19th c date, in lieu of any definitive evidence. Obviously a well done piece.
Condition:
Modifications: Ends cut. Wish there were more. A couple loose threads along the bottom, probably from a previous attachment. Or there may have been another pieced attached like along the top. These usually have a tripart constriction.
Damage: Nothing obvious.
Soilage: Hard to tell the real color – but it looks clean.

Comments: These two pieces look like borders from 19th century well worked Italian or maybe Greek household linens which have the majority of the cloth cut off. The hemstitching and drawnwork are excellent, but the actual stitches used in the reticella just look too modern. These linens are a collectible area in themselves.
Condition:
Modifications: Both pieces cut short.
Damage: What is left looks intact.
Soilage: Looks like there’s a little bit of brown age staining, hard to tell.

Comments: A great early (I’ll stick my neck out and say early 17th c) Punto Tirato Tela Sfilata drawnwork. It has a more modern Italian bobbinlace attached at the bottom – at least I don’t think it’s contemporary, the thread looks slightly different. The top edge of the piece has been totally cut away – you can see the remnants of the same wave pattern at the bottom. If intact, this would be an important piece. Very typical early Italian line of the type seen in 16th c pattern books. Wonderful figural elements.
Condition:
Modifications: Ends appear to be finished. Top section cut away.
Damage: Basically it looks in good shape, although some bad fraying where cut.
Soilage: Hard to tell the color, but I don’t see any obvious stains.

Auction ends: Oct 28, 13:00:22 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller baraud, Newton Abbot, United Kingdom
Comments: A narrow, long border of Mechlin. Closeup photos showing the mesh are good. The straight bottom edge, the ruffled motif borders and the regular esprits in the ground recall the Beveren point ground style. Short repeat of a single flower with three leaves, smaller flowers along the border.
Condition:
Modifications: Not enough closeups to tell if ends are cut.
Damage: Occasional wear along the bottom border. The mesh is basically intact but has a bit of a fuzzy look – gives the whole piece a rather soft look. Usually these laces were made of cotton with thicker softer linen gimps, and the cotton can fray. But it’s hard to tell exactly without magnification. A lot depends on the quality of the thread in terms of long term survival. Seller cites a few breaks in the mesh.
Soilage: Looks clean – seller calls it ‘antique white’.

Comments: A set of Honiton motifs with original envelope, J. Allen, The Lace Shop, Beer, Devon. This kind of provenance is rare; just wish there were a date to go with it. The motifs themselves are well out of the snails/slugs stage, very nicely done. Note the little threads connecting the pieces – not really brides, just keeping them in place.

Comments: A later 19th c Point d’Angleterre pieced bobbinlace flounce with Point de Gaze mesh. One of the better 19th c products. This one seems to copy the Louis XIV style with the lower border having hexagonal mesh fillings, contrasted with the lighter mesh above (I think that mesh might be bobbin-made, and often passes under the motifs). The small florals and slightly undulating design are also mid 18th C design characteristics. It does lace the elaborate decorative ‘mode’ fillings that you often see in this kind of lace, but that’s really no problem here.
I thnk this might be a French piece – of the type sometimes manufactured by Lefebure.
Condition:
Modifications: One end cut, the other might be original, not sure.
Damage: A number of small holes and pinholes in the mesh. Occasional pattern break along the bottom edge.

Comments: Another flounce of 19th c Point d’Angleterre, and it makes a nice comparison with lace reviewed immediately above. This one is more elaborate, with a massive design, elaborate needle-made fillings and minimal Point de Gaze ground. Good decorative ‘mode’ fillings; I especially like the vertical rows of rings. Needlelace is also used to give the bobbin-made flower petals some texture. ote also the vertical striped needlelace fillings with what looks like overlaid bobbin motifs. All in all a complex, interesting work. You see this style of Pt d’A made up into berthas sometimes.

Comments: Ex. coll. Pat Earnshaw. A mantilla-shawl of embroidered machine net. It has the typical Spanish construction of a roughly triangular centerpiece with a separate deep frill surrounding, but it doesn’t seem to be the type to drape over a comb. The embroidery looks neederun with large flat flowers that are of the Blonde-de-Caen style. Hard to say where it was made.
