Comments: A Bruges Bloemwerk collar with two different plaited grounds. Near the neckline is a rectangular picoted grid, near the outside brides are irregularly spaced. The work is tightly done – note the single windows in the flower petals. The design symmetric with quite a nice presence. Rolled ribs define some of the leaves, and there are island and tally fillings in the flower centers. This is a very good example of this type of work.

Comments: A fairly deep border of Blonde de Caen, from France. This lace is famous for the contrast of the heavy motifs and the very light mesh, which can also be its undoing in condition. Here the design fills the space quite well, it is meant to hold a slight ruffle. Note the elaborate esprits in the ground, and some extra effort to contrast the heavy border with lighter small halfstitch leaves. also note the little diamonds in the centers of the honeycomb areas, which is a bit unusual.
Condition:
Modifications: I can’t see the ends in the photos, probably cut since it is a short length.
Damage: The mesh looks a bit strange along the top, pulled, or maybe some repair? Hard to tell. It isn’t consistent with the rest of the mesh. Might be a separate piece joined by racroc.
Soilage: Looks quite clean from the photos.

Comments: A guipure collar. It doesn’t look like Beds to me, especially with the little islands in the mesh next to the neckline. I’m puzzled on origin here, but no question the design is very good, and quite naturalistic.

Comments: A lappet scarf of Brussels bobbinlace application on machine net. Some tiny needlelace accents in flower centers., and there are two rather large needlelace flower at the lappet ends. The bobbinlace is small and delicate, quite well made, raised rolls and edges. Good naturalistic design, note wave of flowers along the connecting band. Comments: An alb flounce and cuffs of guipure bobbinlace with a rose ground mesh. All three pieces are in circular form, ready to attach. It looks like a French or Spanish guipure, typical of these larger pieces, although I can’t spot the specific place of manufacture. The large flowers have no gimp, and note the windows in the petal work. I’m thinking the cuffs are pieces cut from the larger original flounce.

Comments: A Honiton guipure lappet scarf. I like the clean lines of this piece. The motifs are slightly snails/slugs style, and have the scattered English flower garden feel that you see so often in Honiton. Interesting flowers that I can’t identify, they almost look in side view, and you can clearly see the tape winding back and forth to build up the flower. Comments: A Gros Point flounce of varying width. There are several different edgings around the piece, one of which looks like a narrow Genoese insertion. The needlelace motifs have the high relief edges, fairly simply decorated. Lots of interesting groundwork variation over large areas, perhaps a sign of an earlier piece. Note the highly decorated brides typical of the era. The motifs have been reassembled, as was so typical of 19th c adaptations, and many of the brides have been replaced.

Comments: A Burano needlelace edging, perhaps for a handkerchief, cut on one side, perhaps to adapt for a collar. This is a ‘classic’ Burano design, large swirling flowers and leaves, no esprits in the ground, and a variety of decorative fillings. The cordonnet in Burano is always couched on. Good regular work, with a bit of a mechanical appearance that you often find in Burano.

Comments: Ex. coll. Pat Earnshaw, illustrated in “Bobbin and Needle Laces”. Described as “Brussels Duchesse”. If it is a Belgian piece it is very unusual. Note the raised tallies on cloth stitch in the end flowers and acorns, and the rather unusual raised work on halfstitch in the buds. Yet there are some islands joining Brides – more of a Bruges technique. I’ll call it Belgian, but quite unusual, and difficult to attribute. At first glance it almost looks like a Floral Beds piece, but obviously is not a continuous lace, so that’s not a viable option.

Comments: A wide Point de Gaze flounce with raised petal roses, and elaborate decorative ‘mode’ fillings. Note the multiple raised rings in the centers of the upper flowers. The design is so dense that there is little left over for the mesh. For later 19th c elaborate romantic Belgian needlelaces, it doesn’t get much better than this, and there’s a lot of interest in this piece.

Comments: A flat Point de Gaze border with a primary motif of daffodils. Technically it is excellent. Design-wise it isn’t quite the quality of the previous piece, but still a high end market item. For example, they might have done something a bit more innovate with the decorative ‘mode’ fillings, and the flowers and leaves look a little flat. Comments: A set of Alençon lappets with the connecting cap back band. Quite remarkable that the band matches the lappet design. Just wish the cap back were also there. The design is an early Louis XVI, with a lighter border and brides tortillée inside. Very small motifs. This type of design comes up fairly often, here the edge is a little more complex than usually seen. Lappets like this are usually quite long.
Condition:

Comments: A small table cover of pieced bobbinlace with what looks like a point ground bobbin-made mesh. You see this occasionally, usually in smaller more delicate pieces, and I don’t really know where it comes from. The bobbinlace is rather Duchesse, maybe with Ghent refinements, and some simple but appropriate fillings. The design is quite effective for this type of object, although the motifs at the cloth edge look a little crowded. But I don’t think it’s been cut from a larger piece.

Comments: Ex. coll. Pat Earnshaw. A wide border of bobbinlace which has been made in strips so it is likely early 19th c, perhaps English. The ground is Kat stitch. You can see the strips sewn together clearly in this piece. Whether this is an assembled piece, or originally meant to be like this is the question. Something like this bears a little resemblance to Levey’s “A History of Lace”, plate 344, described as an early French blonde. Interesting, puzzling piece.

Comments: A black lace bonnet veil, but the photos aren’t close enough to see what it is.
