Comments: A square veil or shawl of tambour embroidery on machine net. Nicely worked with both heavy and lighter shading stitches. Work like this is sometimes ascribed to Belgium. Seller notes that the density of the embroidery makes the piece a bit heavy, but it looks like it hangs well on the manikin.

Modifications: None
Damage: Seller cites occasional small hole and several small repairs.
Soilage: Looks clean from the photos.

Comments: A border of Gros Point needlelace. The lack of continuity in the design indicates reassembly at a later date. As far as actual age goes, there is a lot of debate presently about the early attribution of pieces like this, and the reassembly be a point in its favor for an early date. The clothwork is quite plain with a good cold-press patina, and there are a few simple fillings. Some of the cordonet work is well sculpted, some looks a little unrefined, and the centering of some rings almost looks like they were added later. The motif designs are a bit blocky, and the brides are as expected, but could have been added later. Overall I’m not willing to make a definite early date on this piece – parts look early, but there’s been reworking along with the reassembly.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Reassembled in the 19th century.
Damage: A few broken and missing brides
Soilage: Overall age patina.

Comments: A Honiton collar with needle-made ground, which puts this into the Honiton Point category. A little snails/slugs style, with nicely made roses and thistles, good symmetry to the design. The ‘lily of the valley’ flowers are unusual.
Provenance: None cited.

Comments: A small baby’s cap of guipure bobbinlace, probably a Cluny type. As the seller points out, the thread is a little heavier than found in Beds. Good floral design for the type, with raised tallies. Unusual to see a piece like this.
Provenance: None cited.

Comments: Honiton applique on machine net, probably a flounce. There aren’t many photos so I can’t tell the condition of the top and side edges. The motifs are typical of this lace, quite large, with a chain of flowers on the edge, scattered sprigs in the upper ground.
Provenance: None cited.

Comments: Irish crochet collar and cuffs, which match. Note the seller’s comment, that they are quite loosely worked and floppy. Probably a result of the kind of thread used, or more of an amateur effort. You also see this in silk Irish crochet, but I don’t think that’s the case here, despite the many raised rings which are a mark of silk work. The motifs are interesting, the rings well done, and it has the kind of geometric look that is sometimes found in IC. Probably a later work.

Comments: Fan with Mother of Pearl (probably Abalone) pierced sticks. Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net. A few needlelace accents in the fillings, and small rings used as ‘esprits’. The motifs are typical for this lace.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None, note stick replacements.
Damage: Seller says he/she has repaired a few areas – not sure what that means. 6 of the 14 ribs have been replaced with almost identical ones. I see a few repairs to the net, and occasional pinhole in the tulle.

Comments: A Point de Gaze collar, no raised work/ The ‘daffodil’ motif is quite effective, especially with the heavy ring chains around the trumpet openings. I also like the very broad edge motif, rather architectural. Nice contrast with the lighter neckedge motifs.

Comments: A fairly narrow Maltese border with teardrop/heart designs (hopefully I’ll be able to take the Maltese class at OIDFA this year and get more insight into this lace). Fillings alternate between Maltese cross and a mat of woven leaves. This is a common design for borders in this lace.
Provenance: None cited

Comments: An Italian tape lace very much in the Abruzzi style. The passives are white, the weavers and edge threads are pale yellow silk. Another piece of this was sold a few months ago. Probably a 19th c piece.

Comments: A mixed tape parasol cover, could be English Branscombe. The raised ribs on the spider wheels are found in this lace, however I don’t see any of the typical looped brides, and the outer edge is also atypical. But I think the design and work are close enough for this attribution. Large pieces like this do come up occasionally.

Comments: A parasol with Irish Crochet shade. Normally you’d think this lace would be too heavy for a parasol, however the work here is quite light, resembling the earlier more textile-related patterns. The edges are scalloped, but it’s hard to tell exactly how the cover was constructed. The lace is lined with black silk, and there’s a cream silk inner lining.

Comments: A Honiton Point flounce, needle-made ground. The motifs have some raised work, with typical roses, thistles, and I think Oak leaf motifs. Rather on the snails/slugs style side, and I think it’s a later 19th c piece. it has a nice presence. The foot edge treatment is a bit unusual, not easy to sew this to something along that edge.

Comments: A Duchesse de Bruxelles fan with Mother of Pearl (Abalone) inlaid sticks. The needlelace in this lace consists of some decorative ring fillings, in rows and as a grid, and also a single flower without mesh ground in the center. Quite an effective design. Typical Duchesse motifs with raised work on halfstitch ground.

Comments: A very interesting piece, with metallic and other embroidery on the cap. I don’t recognize this point ground lace border in the context of Slovakian lace – it looks more like a Lille design. Still, something like this doesn’t come up very often, and it is beautifully made and quite impressive looking.

Comments: A narrow, long length of Point de Gaze, no rased work. The design is rather architectural, and note the single looped picots along the edge. That’s the sign of a manufacturer, name lost. Some heavy rings used as decorative modes in hexagonal cartouches n the repeats. Interesting design. Seller has listed 2 other similar bonnets, #360817136104 and 360817135162.
