Comments: Seller is offering a number of small pieces from the collection of the late Susan Cox. This one is a rather exceptional short piece with some history, and a very elaborate design of oak leaves. This is Bucks lace at its best – wish there were more…

Comments: A good narrow border of snails/slugs style Honiton lace. Plaited brides, flowers with the rather ‘turkey tail’ design. A good example of the type.

Comments: A border of Belgian Point de Angleterre, later 19th c. Fine bobbin motifs with a Point de Gaze mesh and decorative needlelace ‘mode’ fillings. This can be an extremely impressive lace, here It think the needlelace decoration is a little imprecise. It does have an overall dense design that looks well from a distance.
Provenance: Ex. coll. Susan Cox of the English Lace School in Tiverton.

Comments: A lappet scarf of Point de Gaze. No raised work, hardly any decorative fillings, so this piece depends solely on design for effect. Not the most sophisticated design, but I think the overall effect is good.

Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: A few small holes and pinholes in the mesh.

Comments: A rectangular scarf of tambour embroidery on machine net. The chain stitch is often indicative of Belgian manufacture, however very difficult to tell the actual origin. Impressive design, well executed. See also Ebay #360844338032, same seller, for a similar piece.

Comments: A long, wide insertion of a plaited bobbinlace. Seller attributes it to Le Puy, which could be correct. I’ve gotten similar things from this area with a solid provenance, however it is a very poorly documented type. This piece has a good bold design reminiscent of the early plaited lace pattern books. It would probably be used to edge table linens.
Provenance: Comes from a “mercerie” (haberdashery?).

Modifications: Can’t see the edges to tell if they are cut.

Comments: A medium width border of Duchesse de Bruges. Nice design, good raised work, carefully done fillings and brides. A cut above what you often find in this lace.
Provenance: Ex. coll. Susan Cox of the English Lace School in Tiverton.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see both ends, but one looks properly terminated for a pieced lace.

Comments: A narrow border of bobbinlace guipure with a leaf design. No gimp, but it does have some raised tally work. The ‘islands’ among the brides make me think it might be Belgian. But the rather novel design seems more French. An unusual, interesting piece.
Provenance: Ex. coll. Susan Cox of the English Lace School in Tiverton.

Comments: A handkerchief of Bruges Bloemwerk. Nicely done, the motifs seem tightly worked (might be Ghent work?). Narrow picoted brides with a few simple fillings in flower centers.

Comments: These come up occasionally, I’ve seen 3 on Ebay in the past 2 years. Duchesse de Bruges (they seldom have any needlelace), and in the form of a tiered necklace. This one almost looks like it is edged with rows of pearls. Excellent design with the large leaves offset with the smaller found forms. One raised medallion in the center.

Comments: A handkerchief of Duchesse de Bruxelles with multiple layered raised petal roses in Point de Gaze. No mesh grounded needlelace, which is fortunate because this piece really doesn’t need that additional touch. The roses match very well with the bobbinlace motifs. Excellent design – I especially like the tiny motifs between the roses on the outer edges in the corners. A higher end market product.

Modifications: None
Damage: A few tiny defects, very minor.

Comments: A fan of Brussels bobbin and needlelace applique on machine net. The design has a rather free Art Nouveau look, however the motifs are a bit loose in construction. Note the needlelace figural motifs, and a few needlelace fillings. Naturalistic design, plain Mother of Pearl (abalone) sticks.

Comments: A Genoese style plaited bobbinlace border, quite long. Hard to tell if it is an early piece, but it does have many characteristics of what we think of as Genoese. Particularly the little woven leaves, and the fan-like scallops.
Provenance: From the collection of the seller’s mother, sculptress and author Zena Garrett.
