Comments: A long border of Brussels bobbinlace application on machine net. Good naturalistic design for a fairly narrow piece, and note the well-done esprits in the ground. A narrow repeat meant for ruffling. Just a few simple needlelace fillings.
Provenance: Ex. coll. Susan Cox of the English Lace School, Tiverton, UK.
Condition:
Modifications: One end cut, can’t see the other end.
Damage: One repair to the net near one end. I wonder if this was done in the process of manufacture, since the rest of the piece seems unused.

Comments: A fan of Brussels Duchesse, no raised roses in the Point de Gaze inserts. Note the Pt d Gaze along the upper edge of the fan leaf, unusual. A little raised work in the bobbinlace. Good design, a little crowded. Blonde sticks with diamond monogram on the guard. Comes with a box labeled Henri Tessier, Paris.
Provenance: Ex. coll. Countess Irene de Chateaubriand.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: All looks intact, Pt d G mesh looks good.
Soilage: I think the outer edge might be a little soiled, not enough closeups to tell for certain. Might just be the contrast of the bobbin and needlelace threads.

Comments: A narrow scarf of Maltese cream silk. No Maltese crosses in this piece, but it does have the sun motif. And note the Torchon-like outer edging. Definitely a non-standard piece for Maltese, which might put in more in the French or Spanish camp.

Comments: An altar cloth or Alb flounce of linen (per the seller) bobbinlace. Most likely Spanish. Looks like rose ground variations, with flowers surrounded with gimps, but not always. It’s a very wide piece, and the technique is scaled to the size. There are no photos of the top, but it seems that there is a cloth tape attached to the foot edge. This is something you often see in religious pieces, although I don’t see any specific iconography here. I did get a message from the seller, who will ship to the US, but does not take Paypal.

Comments: A Maltese table cover with star-shaped center silk piece. The work is quite heavy with massed woven leaf roundels. Outside border alternates between Maltese crosses and the sun motif, again with heavy leaves. Nicely planned and executed, note the careful working of the inner part of the lace around the center star. This is a lace made in strips to accommodate the long, narrow Maltese pillow – they are sewn together afterward.

Comments: An interesting piece – looks like it has been cut down from a larger original, with the side and top borders added to hide the edges. The main part is a bobbinlace with what appears to be a droschel ground, and from the size of the motifs and the types of fillings I wonder if it might be English. The design is a little figural with baskets and swags. The outer edge looks more solid with feather leaves and flowers. Wish there were more closeups of the ground, and also a photo of the backside – I don’t think this is application on the net, which might still bring it into the early 19th c. If it is application then definitely early 19thc. A closeup of the back could tell. It’s probably now meant to be a shawl. I think I’ve reviewed this one before, but taking another look since it is rather unusual.

Comments: A Belgian needlelace, later 19th c, in the style of the earlier Italian needlelaces. You can tell the Belgian works by the loosely spaced buttonhole stitches attaching the cordonnet to the edges of the motifs – heavier accents are more fully buttonholed. This is a technique used in Point de Gaze. The design is quite dense and heavy, using lighter filling stitches – a nice contrast.

Comments: I have been advising this seller on her listings, and I have a similar piece in my collection, without birds. Pottenkant laces were made for the Dutch market primarily for costumes. The designs are usually a symmetric flower pot, and the general style was made in several techniques. Here there are additions of birds, which is a bit unusual. This piece has a plaited 4-thread ground in a 6-pointed star pattern, that was used in the 18th and 19th centuries. So dating this piece is difficult, but I tend to think 19th c.

Comments: Mechlin lappets ~1740. Mechlin experimented with many grounds before the fond de glas was codified. This one has a plaited almost ’round hole’ valenciennes ground. Good dense design with the main flowers changing slightly as you go up the lappet. In less sophisticated designs they are all the same.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: I think the current picoted edge was added later, although the photos aren’t close enough to tell for certain. That’s a pretty common modification to ‘liven up’ an old lace. Cut and sewn together at tops – this is how a lot of these lappets survive together.

Comments: This looks like an Italian ‘Mezzo Punto’, which is early bobbin-made tapes with needle made fillings. A beautiful design with large sections of a central flower and symmetric swirling foliage to each side. Interesting and varied fillings. It does look terminated rather abruptly on the lower edge, although there aren’t enough closeups to tell. Some motifs just look cut off. It looks like it could be an earlier piece, I’m guessing 17th c.

Comments: A deep Youghal collar. excellent design – the pomegranate motifs resemble what you often see in Burano. Nicely shaded flowers and foliage, picoted bride ground. Some good and interesting fillings used over wide spaces. The decorative fillings you see in Youghal aren’t quite as precise as in Belgian work, but they fit very well into the overall Youghal esthetic.

Comments: Lappets of mid 18th c Mechlin. These are actually one border of Mechlin doubled back on itself, something often seen in this lace, even for cap packs. The ends are shaped so for an excellent transition. This one is unusual because of the separate bobbin motifs running down the seam – you can see the mesh behind these motifs. The design is Louis VI, but could be later. The actual formulation of the piece could be 19th c, since 18thc lappets are normally terminated at the tops to accommodate a cap back and ruffled border.

Comments: I think these are later 19th c Chantilly white silk lappets, made altogether as a lappet scarf. The design departs from the usual romantic florals you usually see in Chantilly, but given the form it works very well. Note the little flowers almost floating held with the brides made basically of ‘honeycomb’ stitch – you see this occasionally in later Chantilly. Interesting piece with a bold design emphasized more by the gimp.

Comments: A collar of Point de Neige, although I think this is an Italian piece, so the name would more properly be Punto Neve, (snow lace). The ultimate fantasy in Italian raised needlelaces. This is a large piece, but I think it’s been cut down from something larger. The outer edges look very elaborate and correct, and the decorated brides are excellent. I am a bit bothered by the rather haphazard design and although Italian products are much freer than the French ones, there should be some organization that you can follow along the tendrils. There might be some reassembly here. This is a lace that dates from the later 17th c.

Condition:
Modifications: Probably cut down from a larger piece. Bobbin-made engrelure added to neckline.
