Starting Price: 10.00 GBP
Auction ends: Apr 06, 2014 12:02:59 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller poppy1109, Rochester, Kent, United Kingdom
Comments: A bonnet veil of bobbinlace applique on machine net. I think it might be an English piece, from the large areas of tally fillings, the soft white tulle, and the larger sprigs used as esprits.  Good design resembling blonde de Caen with large floral motifs along the bottom.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: A few small holes in the mesh. Two side flowers missing.
Soilage: Age discoloration.

Starting Price: 10.00 GBP
Auction ends: Apr 06, 2014 12:25:50 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller poppy1109, Rochester, Kent, United Kingdom
Comments: A bonnet veil of tambour embroidery on machine net. A nice contrast with the previous piece. Same kind of design that you see in the contemporary Blonde de Caen laces.  No esprits in the ground.  Probably a Belgian piece because of the tambour chain stitch.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see the top edge, but seller says it is ‘re-sewn’. Not sure what that means.
Damage: Pinholes in the tulle.
Soilage: Looks clean from the photos.

Comments: A wide border of Carrickmacross guipure. Typical looped picot edge, and note the inserts of machine tulle with some needlerun embroidery accents in various motifs. A few raised ring accents.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see the ends to tell if they are cut – this might be a narrow rectangular shawl.
Damage: Occasional fraying of motif edges where the outlining thread has come loose.

Starting Price: $19.99
Auction ends: Apr 06, 2014 18:54:45 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller kuchcollectiblesandvintagelinens, United States
Comments: A Duchesse de Bruges set of two cuffs and a matching neckpiece. I wonder if there wasn’t a triangle insert originally which is now lost. Conventional motifs, average technique, a good middle market set. It is unusual to have such pieces survive together. I do like the round flower motif that ties everything together.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: One hole in the neckpiece, looks repairable.
Soilage: Ivory color.

Size:  ~8″ square
Starting Price: $75.00
Auction ends: Apr 07, 2014 05:10:13 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Irvington, New York, United States
Comments: A Mechlin-edged handkerchief, fairly small which is typical of pieces like this. Note the whitework monogram in the central linen.  I think the lace has been cut to fit, since the esprit motifs don’t always fit into the cutout edge of the linen. You can see diagonal seams in the corners, however the design fit looks very good. I’m thinking this might be an original corner treatment.  It does look like a later 19th, early 20th c piece, but the design itself has an earlier feel.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None, but the lace might be an adaption.
Damage:  I think there might be a little edge damage in the righthand corner in the photo. There’s no closeup, but maybe a repair to the mesh just down from the top on the left.
Soilage: Center cloth a little stained.

Auction ends: Apr 07, 2014 05:23:36 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Irvington, New York, United States
Comments: A handkerchief with a Binche edge, Point de Fée variation.  Nicely done with precise woven leaf tallies, typical of this lace.  Good whitework monogram. Linen center, can’t tell if the lace is linen, but seller states that it is.  Thread just looks a little fuzzy to me.   This is a lace that is made today, so I’ll call it a 20th c piece.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None, although I’m having trouble seeing how the inner edge of the lace is treated since it is so nicely sewn into the drawn/rolled hem..  I’ll assume it hasn’t been cut, but not sure.
Damage:  Nothing obvious in the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean.

Auction ends: Apr 07, 2014 05:45:02 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Irvington, New York, United States
Comments: A border of later 19th C Belgian Point d’Angleterre.  This means fine bobbin-made motifs with a Point de Gaze ground; the better pieces have extensive decorative ‘mode’ fillings. Here they are limited to some nicely done rings in chains and grids.  The design is a little mechanical, but well done and nicely suited to the width. It almost looks wider than it actually is – actually quite fine.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see ends t tell if they are cut.
Damage:  Nothing obvious in the photos.  Mesh looks in good shape.
Soilage: Looks clean.

Starting Price: $45.00 with reserve
Auction ends: Apr 07, 2014 06:24:15 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Irvington, New York, United States
Comments: A mid 18th c cap back of Alençon.  Good areas of decorative ‘mode’ fillings, this is something you look for in this kind of lace. The clothwork is a little plan, a few diamond windows are the only decoration.  I’m interested in the quatrefoil motifs, this is more a Belgian design.  We do have to be quite careful of laces in this period, there seems to have been a lot of communication between France and Belgium so that pieces started in one place might be finished in another. It’s not a well researched subject.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None. Engrelure added at top.
Damage:  A few pinholes in the mesh, some small repairs.
Soilage: Seller cites a few scattered age spots.  It is a little stretched out of shape, but I wouldn’t do anything about it.

Comments: A Belgian Binche or Point de Fee handkerchief, nice snowflakes in the ground. Later 19th century, with an elaborate whitework monogram.  The lace is quite deep, a little unusual. Excellent design and technique. No woven tallies (although that’s an English term).
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:

Comments: A beautiful wide square-mesh Valenciennes border. I’m very fond of pieces like this, in face I use one as a background in the header to some of the other LaceNews resources. The only thing that would make this example better would be some ombre shading, but no luck. This is one of those ‘500-bobbin’ pieces, or more.  I think the thread is cotton.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see the ends to tell if it is cut.  One seam.

Comments: A fairly short border of Point de Gaze, no raised work. Some fairly simple decorative “mode” fillings ,mainly in the swags at the bottom. One large rose seems to carry the design in each repeat.  Wish the piece were longer.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut both ends. Wide engrelure added at top.

Comments: A very interesting bodice with a needlelace bertha (although it looks a little short) attached. The Venise lace is quite beautiful, probably Belgian with both bride and Point de Gaze meshes.  Good fillings over large areas. It does have that Art Nouveau flavor.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: The lace looks intact, although hard to tell along neckline. Adapted to the bodice.
Damage:  Maybe a broken bride or two. One hole in the Point de Gaze mesh.

Comments: I’ve seen a fan like this once before on Ebay with a Point de Gaze needlelace (might have been the same seller). This one, however is embroidered machine net. All the lace looks cut to fit the wire frame. The carved handle might be bone or ivory, I’m not an expert here. Whatever, beware of import laws.

Comments: Two cuffs of Point de Gaze with raised petal roses. Note the decoration in the clothwork on the petals, and the better quality decorative “mode” fillings. The pointed petals are also a sign of a better manufacturer. Dense asymmetric design, well executed.  There was probably a matching dress front and neckpiece, now lost.

Starting Price: $45.00 with reserve
Auction ends: Apr 08, 2014 07:20:06 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Irvington, New York, United States
Comments: A narrow, very long border of Alençon, mid to later 19th c 2nd Empire romantic design. Note the flower basket figures. The ground is réseau fin, and the decorative “mode” fillings are even used to define the basket structure. The horsehair picot support has been left in (sometimes it is taken out). Alençon is a heavy lace, often known as a ‘winter’ lace. In a piece this narrow the motifs are quite finely worked, more so than it seems from the photos.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications:  Can’t see the ends to tell if they are cut. Engrelure added at the top.
Damage:  Some pinholes and small repairs throughout the mesh. This lace has been well cared for over its history.
Soilage: The edges of the motifs aren’t quite as crisp as they could be, I wonder if it has been washed. A few light brown age stains.

Comments: A border of Brussels Duchesse with raised petal roses in the Point de Gaze inserts.  Note the large grid of rings and knots done in needlelace used as fillings adjacent to the roses.  Some rolled work in the bobbinlace, standard Duchesse de Bruges motifs.
Provenance:  Hampton Court Palace, tagged with the name “Miss Ashcroft, L885”. Not sure what that means.

Comments: I’m not sure what kind of lace this is, but I’ll guess Bruges, although Italy is a possibility (an attached tag says Belgium, Brussels). It has a bold design and many varied fillings. Note also the doubled picoted brides in a star pattern.  A few woven tallies along the lower edge.  Very precise, neat work.
Provenance:  Hampton Court Palace, tagged with the name “Mrs H. Puls, NoL881”. Not sure what that means.

Comments: Bobbinlace applique on droschel ground. The piece looks like a bonnet veil, but I think it’s been cut down at least on the sides, from something larger.  The design is pure neoclassical directoire, which strictly speaking, dates just before 1800.  Minimalist, architectural, beautifully worked, and impressive piece.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: I think it’s been cut from a larger piece, at least on the sides. Can’t make out the top to see how that was treated.
Damage: Some minor pinholes in the mesh.

Comments: This is a point ground lace (so it is not Mechlin), and might be Bucks. But I’m leaning toward Neuchatel, Switzerland. Analysis of the thread, linen or cotton, could pin down the date. Hard to say what the original form was. The very heavy two-layer lower border might indicate that this piece was substantially larger than it is now.
Provenance:  None cited.

Comments: This is one of those indeterminate silk guipures. They usually have a pattern of raised leaves on a clothstitch ground, bride ground, often including a gimp, and usually of cream silk. It’s not a standard Maltese pattern, and I tend to call them a French Cluny variation. But Spain is also a possibility, maybe even Eastern Europe. This one has a good bold design.

Comments: This is in the style of earlier 19th c Mechlin, but I think it’s a later piece because of the presence of the halfstitch in the border flowers – you don’t see that in earlier pieces. Delicately done, very nicely worked, especially the tiny sprigs used as esprits in the upper ground. An unusually long piece for this type of lace.

Comments: A wide border, probably mid 18th c.  It’s a pieced bobbinlace, Flemish and in the Brabant category, but deviating from the usual Brabant design. It’s a little more angular, and the fillings more elaborate, but does have same looser technique. Does seem to have the fond chant ground, although not enough closeups to tell for certain. There is a growing scholastic opinion that pieces like this were made in Flanders and exported to New Spain in the Americas through Spain. People are looking into this now.

Comments: A triangular shawl of Brussels Bobbinlace applique on machine net. Extensive and well done needlelace decorative ‘mode’ fillings mark this as a Belgian product.  This is a higher end market piece, romantic 2nd Empire design. Shawls like this were designed to be draped over the crinoline skirts of the 1860’s and the slightly later bustle skirts. Excellent design and technique.
Provenance:  None cited
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Numerous pinholes in the tulle.
Soilage: Looks clean from the photos.

Offered by: Ebay lacemerchant, Whiting, Indiana, United States
Comments: It’s unusual to find a matching set of collars in any handmade lace. So I’m not sure of the original purpose. The lace is not fitting into the snails/slugs style, but not too far out of it with the traditional floral motifs. Note the woven leadworks arranged in a square ground, unusual.
Provenance:  None cited
Condition:
Modifications: None, but it does look like a set.
Damage: a few repairs and broken bars.
Soilage: Quite wrinkled. Ivory white.

Comments: A semi-circular hat veil of Brussels application on machine net. The fine tulle, small motifs, lack of extensive fillings, and the presence of the tiny needlelace accents mark this as a Belgian piece.  Quite delicate, the thin border nicely set off by all the esprits in the ground.
Provenance: Ex. coll. Susan Cox of the English Lace School in Tiverton.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Some holes in the tulle.
Soilage: Looks like a few localized stains in the net.

http://tinyurl.com/kd94o8e Divine antique Victorian hand made Irish crochet lace collar
Size: 18 cm deep, 80 cm neckline ?
Starting Price: 62.00 GBP
Auction ends: Apr 13, 2014 11:00:08 PDT
Offered by: Ebay linskapet, Kirkcudbright, Dumfries & Galloway DG6 4UU, United Kingdom
Comments: A deep Irish Crochet collar with points along the edge. Most Irish Crochet has a fairly predictable pattern, large pinwheels of either three or four veins each terminated by an elaborate flower. Here the flowers are rightly worked with raised ring centers; rather thin petals. The picots on the brides might be Clones knots, not enough closeups to tell. Could also just be crocheted loops.  A solidly worked piece with lots of movement.
Provenance: Part of a family lace collection.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Seller says ‘freshly laundered and snowy white’, but gives no details on the process.

Comments: Brussels needlelace applique on machine net, probably a longer length cut and sewn into cuffs. No decorative “mode” fillings, but they aren’t needed given the quality of the design. Probably a later 19th c, early 20th c product. Interesting pieces.
Provenance: From a country house in Cambria.
Condition:
Modifications: One seam each, probably adapted from a longer length.
Damage: A few pinholes in the tulle.
Soilage: Seller says they are freshly laundered and snowy white, but gives not details on the process.
