I’m breaking up the ‘Soilage’ category under ‘Condition’ into two parts. I’ll keep the term ‘Soilage’ to indicate deviations from whatever the original color of the piece was. Adding a new term ‘Finish’, to indicate creases, folds, shrinkage from washing, general patina wear, things like that. I couldn’t think of a better term to encompass all this – suggestions welcome.

Comments: A deep Irish Crochet collar. Square picoted mesh – picots look crocheted. Quite a bit of raised work, often a narrow looped band worked on top of the base motif. Some of the stems are looped together. Excellent tight work.

Comments: A deep collar of Brussels Duchesse. Raised petal roses in the Point de Gaze inserts, which are arranged around the outer edge. Quite a dense design, conventional Duchesse motifs. No raised work in the bobbinlace, but there are a few decorative needle-made ‘mode’ fillings.
Provenance: None cited.

Comments: A border of Milanese tape lace. Good decoration of the tapes, and note the use of picoted brides. The design is meant to compete with Venise needlelaces, although this one doesn’t really explore the floral space much. Very difficult to date something like this since it was widely made into the 19th c. Might be late 18th or early 19th c.

Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A Louis XV mid 18th century Mechlin border. I’ve been reading a few of the articles of Berthilda Vandoren who wrote extensively about Mechlin in the International Lace Magazine. The ground was known as ‘ijzelgrond’ in the city of Mechlin itself, which translates by her to ‘sugar frost ground’. It describes the dew attached to flowers and leaves on a frosty winter morning. This piece has may quatrefoil motifs which are more a 4-petaled flower. Each of the petals has a little opening called a ‘mirror’, something found throughout Mechlin. It’s a small arrangement of twisted threads in a circle, each one made was a prayer to the Virgin. This piece is an excellent example, just wish there were more.
Provenance: Ex. coll. Pat Earnshaw
Condition:
Modifications: Cut both ends, one end secured. Engrelure added at top.
Damage: Engrelure a bit frayed in places – lace looks OK.

Comments: A Point de Gaze lappet scarf, no raised work. Condition is exceptional. Note the large looped single picots around the edges, sometimes connected by a thread. The design is not very naturalistic, and a little simplified – but altogether it works well. The design if fairly dense, gives it a bit of a ‘grey’ look. A few heavy rings used as decorative ‘mode’ fillings.

Comments: A set of six little ‘oval’ inserts with figural motifs. All bobbinlace, looks like a fond chant used for the ground, and a kind of 6-pointed star honeycomb used for the sky. I think there might be some kind of tag on the backs of each. We usually think of these figural motifs as Italian, but giving the technique France is also a possibility.

Comments: These two pieces are quite similar so I’m putting them together.Muslin applique on machine net – the edges look overcast. Additional embroidery helps accent the motif definition. Comments: An early 18th c needlelace, probably a Point de France variation, or possibly Sedan. The top edge looks a little interrupted, but still intact. Clothwork is tight with a few decorations. I am a bit bothered by the filling stitches, all one type and rather simple. Somehow I’d expect more from a lace like this. The fillings almost look like an afterthought in places and I suspect there’s been some replacement occasionally (see the curl just to the left of the main motif in the bottom photo – just doesn’t look right.) Hexagonal picoted brides are a Point de France characteristic. The grid of rings above the center flower is also a little atypical. I think it’s probably early, and the larger motifs are a sign of early 18th c work.
Provenance: Museum deaccession.

Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Irvington, New York, United States
Comments: I’ll put these two together since they are so similar. Chantilly fallcaps, although there isn’t a photo of the first one showing the ends. Fallcaps in Chantilly do show up occasionally. These are quite dark, I’m thinking Belgian manufacture. All the Chantilly elements are there, but the execution is a little off.
Provenance: Museum deaccession.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Frayed spots along the outer border of the second one and one small repair on the second one. First one looks OK, but not enough photos.
Soilage: Looks clean, but hard to tell with black lace.
Finish: Crease down center of the headpiece on both.
Sold for $36.10, 2 bidders.
Sold for $20.50, 2 bidders.

Comments: A Milanese border, and this one has a good early feel. Especially because of the little woven leaves used as fillings and double picoted brides. Good variations on the tapes. I also like the elaborate flowerheads.

Comments: A Honiton border. Seems a bit large for a handkerchief, but small for anything else. It is outside the snails/slugs style, with a bit more refined motifs. Note the large area of leadwork woven tally fillings. Looks like the irregular ground is bobbin-made. Interesting design.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: No center cloth.
Damage: A few holes in the leadworks, occasional broken bride.
Soilage: Deep cream color.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Comments: An elaborate Mechlin border, great sprigs in the upper ground. Border has triangular areas of woven tallies. It’s a little too elaborate design for the late 18th c, I think mid 19th.

Condition:
Modifications: Cut both ends, engrelure attached.

Comments: A narrow triangular shawl of Maltese. The outer border is the undulating teardrop pattern that you see so much in borders. Around the top are a series of guipure roundels. The center part is a kind of plaited grid, unusual. It all works together very nicely.
Provenance: None cited.
