http://tinyurl.com/lyqykgd 51 ins antique/vintage Mechlin lace 19th C – Pat Earnshaw collection
Size: 3″ x 51″
Starting Price: 12.00 GBP
Auction ends: May 11, 2014  09:49:07 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A border of Mechlin in the style of the later 18th c. But because of the use of half stitch in the lower edge flowers, I’m thinking it’s a later piece. 4 rows of esprits in the ground.
Provenance:  Ex. coll. Pat Earnshaw
Condition:
Modifications: Cut both ends, tulle tape added at top.
Damage: Some pulls in the ground, a few holes along upper edge. Might be a small repair.
Soilage:  Mid ivory color.  Some localized brown stains.
Finish:  Looks a little soft, but no obvious creasing.

http://tinyurl.com/lysh7z6 Large antique/vintage cotton Maltese lace shawl border
Size: 37″ x 64″, each front edge 38″
Starting Price: 35.00 GBP
Auction ends: May 11, 2014  09:54:51 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A triangular shawl of Maltese lace. It does not seem to be complete along the top edge. These pieces were always made of smaller borders and motifs sewn together, looks like the top edge border never got added.  Then there’s another thing – these white non-silk shawls may not be Maltese. Some have suggested they are English Beds, although there isn’t much documentation on the subject (there is some anecdotal evidence that Beds did include Maltese crosses in the late 19th c).  The crosses are nicely done, but not really in the traditional Maltese style.  The small flowers surrounded the crosses also look more Beds in style, as do the rather long leaves.  Then again the deeply scalloped heart/tear motif along the outer edge is something you see all the time in Maltese lace. The square shaped mesh is also occasionally seen in Maltese work. The whole subject is very unclear.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Might be unfinished. Some evidence of cuts along the ends.
Damage: Occasional small hole.
Soilage:  Pale gold color, areas of pale brown age discoloration. 2″ long dirt mark reverse, center back.
Finish:  Looks crisp, no obvious folds or wrinkles.

http://tinyurl.com/ltzw2az 1860 HAND FINE FRENCH CHANILLY LACE LAPPET OR TIE
Size: 4″ x 42″, 3.5″ x 38″
Starting Price: $145.00 Buy-it-Now or Make Offer  (on both)
Auction ends: May 12, 2014  05:59 PDT  (both)
Offered by: Ebay seller heartnsoul1, Hollis, New Hampshire, United States
Comments: I’ll put these together since they are quite similar. Both are Chantilly lappet scarves, later 19th c. Good romantic designs, and the first one has the kind of half-stitch going into point ground that you associate with ombre shading techniques.  Which gives it a little bit of a soft look.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: On the first one, I do wonder if some of the crossing lines are missing in the large half-stitch areas at the ends. The two ends don’t quite match up and it looks a little odd, although I can’t see any obvious damage.  Second one looks intact.
Soilage:  Look clean, but hard to tell with black lace.
Finish:  No obvious creases or wrinkles.

http://tinyurl.com/m32d3up 46 ins antique/vintage 18th C edging lace – Pat Earnshaw collection
Size: 1.76″ x 46″
Starting Price: 10.00 GBP
Auction ends: May 12, 2014 11:53:17 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A narrow mid 18th c Mechlin border. It might just be the scale of the piece, but the thread has a bit of a coarse look. But it might be finer than the photos indicate. Nonetheless, the design is a little blocky, without the typical fillings you would expect in a piece of this period.
Provenance:  Ex. coll. Pat Earnshaw
Condition:
Modifications: Cut both ends, engrelure added (coming away from the main lace in one place, missing at one end). One join.
Damage: Several small holes throughout. Lower edge a little frayed.
Soilage:  Pale ivory in color, no sign of spotting.
Finish:  A bit wrinkled, minor.

Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A Mechlin border, probably mid 19th c. It has a straight lower border and rather thin motifs, reminiscent of Arras work. Good short repeat, nice technique, simple fillings with a few woven tallies.
Provenance:  Ex. coll. Pat Earnshaw
Condition:
Modifications: Looks cut and secured both ends. Engrelure added.
Damage: Third photo, lower length, is that a repair upper mid right?  Otherwise looks OK.
Soilage:  Mid ecru color, a few localized small brown stains throughout.
Finish:  A little wrinkled, minor.

http://tinyurl.com/n96snkl Stunning Brussels lace Cuffs circa 1820 From Hampton Court Palace
Size: each 26 cm across and 14 cm deep, I assume laid flat.
Starting Price: 32.00 GBP
Auction ends: May 12, 2014 12:36:41 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller winterwonderlandfairy, london, United Kingdom
Comments: Two cuffs of Bruges bloemwerk. The motifs are a bit conventional, but tightly worked and good design, perhaps a Ghent product? I’ve seen pieces from Hampton Court sales before, and they all date around 1900 – I think that is a reasonable date for these pieces.
Provenance:  Hampton Court Palace
Condition:
Modifications: They look like un-modified cuffs, but hard to tell how they were joined, or if they were made in one piece. Additional tulle and header attached at the tops.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage:  They look a bit beige with a few isolated small orange spots.
Finish:  I can’t see any creases from folding, but they were probably stored flat, so there’s likely something along the edges.

Size: 8″ x 142″ + ~14″ fragment
Starting Price: $0.99
Auction ends: May 12, 2014 18:26:09 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller jmgoldbuyers, Buffalo, New York, United States
Comments: A guipure insertion that looks rather like a Spanish Almagro, late 19th or 20th c.  I wrote about this type of lace in a lace-of-the-month post http://tinyurl.com/mh9l9nt  (I need to start those up again…) Note the gimp and the bold combination of half/whole stitch shading.  As I’ve said many times, these guipures are very hard to attribute. This type of lace is also sometimes attributed to Mirecourt, but I’ll stick with Spain, and I’ve seen a number of examples come up for sale on Spanish Ebay.  I can’t tell if it is cotton or linen from the photos.
Provenance:  Ex. coll. Charlotte Albright, Western New York artist and Philanthropist.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut both ends.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos – quite a sturdy lace.
Soilage:  A few foxing spots.
Finish:  Some slight creasing.

Starting Price: 20.00 GBP
Auction ends: May 13, 2014 10:51:03 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Buffalo, New York, United States
Comments: An Italian tape lace with lots of decorated tapes. It does have the symmetry that you find in the more Central Italian laces like l’Aquila. Note how the tapes blend seamlessly into the header. The woven leaves are found in Milan and Genoa, but the general appearance of this piece is more later 19th c.  Quite a bold look.
Provenance:  Ex. coll. Pat Earnshaw.
Condition:
Modifications: Looks finished on both ends
Damage: Some broken brides, wear along lower edge.
Soilage:  Looks clean.
Finish:  A bit worn with a few creases.

Comments: A long length of Bruges Bloemwerk, with the lower edge looking more like a tape lace. The work is a bit light. Typical ‘islands’ in the brides.  Simple fillings, good, practical design.
Provenance:  Hampton Court Palace
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see the ends to tell if they are cut. Engrelure attached.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage:  Looks clean.

Offered by: Ebay seller ewrphljfk, Trenton, New Jersey, United States
Comments: An embroidered net rectangular veil.  I really like the quality of the embroidery – looks like tambour with a heavy core and a lighter edge. Gives the motifs a wonderful relief.  Needlerun fillings in the flowers.  Possibly a Belgian product.
Provenance:  Seller’s great grandmother’s wedding veil.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Pinholes and a few small holes.
Soilage:  Seller cites one storage stain.
Finish:  Rather wrinkled throughout.

Comments: This seller has made a study of Tønder laces, and I’ll agree with the attribution.  Tønder  tends to be divided into various periods, and later 19th c could be appropriate here.  Excellent light design.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:

Comments: A narrow Point de Gaze border. No raised work, but some decorative filling work. Design is a bit crowded, sacrificing some delicacy in the effect. Another section of this length is offered as Ebay #390838683680.
Provenance:  None cited.

Comments: A Point de Gaze border, raised petals in the roses. Short repeat, quite a nice design with the heavier narrow lower border and delicate sprays of leaves above. No decorative ‘mode’ fillings – just a few rings around the flower centers. The piece really doesn’t need elaboration.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see the ends to tell if they are cut. Engrelure attached.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage:  Seller cites a few tiny age spots.

Comments: A Point de Gaze border with an interesting ribbon-like design along the lower edge.  No raised work, and I haven’t seen the star-like filling stitches before.  Note the separated spiky picots along the lower edge, and also the bars bordering the ‘ribbon’ edges. Unusual touches for a nice looking piece.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see the ends to tell if they are cut. Engrelure attached, coming loose in one place.  A few stray threads left in the engrelure top edge.
Damage: Some pinholes in the mesh.

Comments: Years ago I visited the Jesurum lace shop in Venice and got a showing of the collection from their old factory by Mario Moreno Levi. We looked at a lot of pieces like this, he even gave me a sample to take home, which I still have. He told me how the workers were selected based on their type of hands to specialize in all the steps in manufacturing this lace.  It is a bertha, copying the 17th century Punto Neve (Point de Neige in France), with well done raised work and great detail in the brides. Probably made at the Queen Margharita school in the Burano technique, and I’m guessing early 20th century.  A really beautiful piece.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: A few broken brides.
Soilage:  One storage spot.
Finish:  Edge motifs could use some stabilization, but overall it looks unused.

Starting Price: 5″ x 24″ each
Auction ends: May 15, 2014 08:23:25 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller palexpo, Steinhausen, Switzerland
Comments: A pair of Brussels bobbinlace lappets with droschel ground. Around 1740. Excellent design and technique. The design is a bit crowded, but that’s nitpicking. This is a major set.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Occasional pinhole and weakness in the clothwork – very minor.  Look at the second photo, the lappet on the right about 1/4 of the way down from the top. There’s a horizontal line on the right side, I wonder if this is a repair.
Soilage:  Looks OK at first glance, but there are a few faint color changes in the photos that are hard to judge.
Finish:  A few horizontal fold lines evident in the first photo.

Condition:
Modifications: Cut both ends. Engrelure added. One join.
Damage: Some pulls in the ground.
Soilage:  Pale ivory color, a few small brown age marks.

Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut both ends. Engrelure added. One join.
Damage: One small hole in the mesh, center of the piece.
