Auction ends: May 18, 2014 10:02:51 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller sanysa, Winnetka, California, United States
Comments: I think this is rectangular, a veil of Brussels bobbinlace appliqued on machine net. Good pattern arrangements, flowers around outside border, larger sprigs among the many esprits in the ground, sprays used as corner motifs. The lace itself if a little loosely made. Probably a later 19th c piece.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Seller cites several professional repairs done at the beginning of the 20th c, several others need to be done. Only 2 shown in the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: Very nice drape to the tulle. No obvious folds or wrinkles.

Comments: A Duchesse de Bruges handkerchief, on the Bruges side. I like the bold look, very open design. Note the little ‘islands’ where brides meet on the outer edge.
Provenance: From a private collection

Damage: One gap on outside, lower right corner.
Soilage: Seller cites faint age marks to center cloth.
Finish: No obvious wrinkles or creases.

Starting Price: $300.00
Auction ends: May 18, 2014 19:00:19 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller fletcher110, New Orleans, Louisiana, United States
Comments: A Point de Gaze bertha, raised petals on the roses. The shape of the petals are a bit more sophisticated than usually found. Some good, but not highly varied decorative ‘mode’ fillings, typical elaborate 2nd empire romantic design. Note the cotton padding in the roses, Point de Gaze often includes shaped padding as part of the raised work manufacture which should not be removed. Here it looks like a later addition, but is part of the history of the piece. A good example of the type.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: A few pinholes in the ground, minor.
Soilage: Cream color
Finish: No obvious folds or wrinkles.
No bids.

Comments: A Point de Gaze dress front, raised petals on the roses. Some excellent decorative ‘mode’ fillings done in a grid pattern. This is a fairly unusual shape for Point de Gaze, and the design works quite well.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: A number of pinholes in the mesh.
Soilage: Looks clean, but maybe a little yellowing along neckline. Hard to tell from the photos.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Comments: A Carrickmacross applique rectangular shawl. Most of the work is one on the 19″ on each end, but there are sprigs ad esprits in the ground, and a narrow border along the sides. Note the typical looped picots along the edge, along with the shamrock motif. A little cutwork guipure work, but this is kept to a minimum.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: A few pinholes in the mesh, and some of the motif couching has come loose.
Soilage: Looks a beige color from the photos, but no obvious spots.
Finish: Some fold lines evident in the photos. No obvious wrinkling.

Offered by: Ebay seller kuchcollectiblesandvintagelinens, Ronkonkoma, New York, United States
Comments: A Youghal handkerchief border, cut so as to adapt for a dress front. Nicely worked with shaded flowers and leaves. Not much in the way of decorative fillings, but the clothwork is well ornamented with lines and diamonds. Good design, well adapted to the form. Would love to see this put back together, which is eminently doable. Talk to the Kenmare Lace people. And see Elizabeth Kurella’s new book.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Cut midway along the bottom in the photo, 3 metal hooks attached. Looks like a clean cut and could probably be put back together. One loose thread along border.
Soilage: Age darkening, a few dark brown stains.
Finish: No obvious creases, although it doesn’t look quite as flat as it could. A very minor issue.

Comments: A deep collar of Irish Crochet with long frontpieces. The motifs are very large (especially the unusual diamond shaped motifs) with a lot of raised work. Square mesh brides, can’t tell how the picots are done, probably crocheted loops. Tightly worked, with a very bold design.
Provenance: None cited.

Damage: A few broken brides.

Size: 3.25″ x 84″
Starting Price: $59.99
Auction ends: May 18, 2014 19:40:33 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller jaruk, Worcester, United Kingdom
Comments: A good length of Alençon lace, with brides tortillée or bouclé (hard to tell from the photos, might be a combination) in the main ground and réseau fin along the border. I think it’s a 19th century piece, mainly because of the rather open stitch used in the ground, and the overall design which is more romantically naturalistic than you find in the 18th c. Some well executed decorative ‘mode’ fillings along the lower border.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see the ends to tell if they are cut. Engrelure added along the foot edge.
Damage: Seller points out one break along footside, and it does look like there’s some repairs to the upper ground. A few tiny holes in some of the clothwork.
Soilage: Some photos look a little beige in color, but this might just be a trick of the light.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles; appears to lay quite flat.

Comments: A border of Belgian Point d’Angleterre, which is a fine bobbinlace with Point de Gaze ground. I’ve always liked this lace a lot, a wonderful later 19th c development. In this piece there are a few decorative fillings, and note the raised centers of the little flowers, much like Rosaline.

Comments: There’s a wonderful lacemaking group in Rosario. And since this is close to Paraguay, I think it’s safe to assume this is ñanduti – and the fillings between the roundels are very typical of that lace – and it might have the sheen of silk. Hard to tell from the photos. I’ve never seen anything like this.

Comments: A bobbinlace fallcap, I think it’s probably Cluny. The design is a little bolder and the thread heavier than what you normally find in Beds. And the ‘ground’ next to the guipure has more French characteristics like you see in Le Puy. An interesting piece, well made.

Comments: A shawl of Muslin applique on machine net. The motifs are tamboured around the edges, and this is a Belgian technique. There are also no obvious Irish motifs, and the ‘botah’ design was also found in contemporary Blonde de Caen laces. I think it’s a later 19th or early 20th c piece.
