Comments: A bertha of Bruges Bloemwerk. Typical floral, leaf and scroll design, motifs fairly large, but appropriate to the piece. A few woven tallies used as fillings, picoted brides but no ‘islands’. A good example in the bertha form.
Provenance: From a manor house near Nimes, France.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Seller says ‘freshly laundered, no marks or stains’, but gives no details on the cleaning process. It does look very white.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Comments: A border of Milanese. The swirl of the design seems to be intact and it doesn’t look to me like anything has been cut. But the ha and foot do look like replacements. It’s a typical Milanese design with double un-picoted plaited brides sparely used. Well done holes in the tape work with a few filling stitches. We’ve been seeing a lot of this type of lace from this collection, and exact attribution is difficult. This has the feel of a 19th c piece with a certain amount of age wear.
Provenance: Ex. coll. Pat Earnshaw.
Condition:
Modifications: Header and footer look like later additions. At least two joins.
Damage: Broken brides with some repairs.
Soilage: Some pale brown age marks.
Finish: Seller cites a lot of creasing.

Comments: A handkerchief with Point d’Angleterre narrow border. This is a fine bobbinlace with a Point de Gaze ground, and can be quite elaborate. A narrow border of simple alternating flower and leaf motif with some raised rings as decorative fillings. A good, delicate pattern. Good whitework embroidered monogram.
Provenance: From a French estate.

Comments: A deep color of raised Venise needlelace. I think it might be Belgian given the slightly open clothwork, and the raised edges are a little loosely buttonholed. Not a lot of sculpting of the cordonnet. Good, bold design.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.

Comments: I think this is a white Spanish ret-fi cape. You see black all the time, but white is rare and used for more formal occasions. Might be silk. The design is the typical narrow ret-fi lines with star-shaped fillings. The condition isn’t the best, but this is a fairly rare piece.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Main part looks OK, not certain about added collar.
Damage: ragged outer edge, collar detached a bit. Scattered large and small holes.
Soilage: One faint rust colored spot.
Finish: Looks like a little wrinkled, but background it is photographed on is more wrinkled, so it’s a bit hard to tell.

Comments: A rectangular shawl of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net. It has a more elaborate outer edge with some needle-made decorative ‘mode’ fillings. The inside looks a little different in concept, more widely space esprits and the filling are needle-run. I think some of the leaves look more like what you see in Princesse lace, although the rest looks OK. The design is a little puzzling.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: One tiny break in the net near one edge.
Soilage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Finish: Wrinkled, and the motifs look a little pulled. Probably a sign of an old wash.

Comments: Louis XV Mechlin narrow border. This is that kind of ‘reversible design that often gets put edge-to-edge to make larger pieces like lappets and cap backs. Fairly simple design and fillings, nicely worked. Unusually good condition.
Provenance: Ex. coll. Pat Earnshaw
Condition:
Modifications: Cut both ends, engrelure added.

Comments: Another set of these cards was listed last week. These are short samples of Valenciennes, Bucks, Honiton, Lille. Good examples, especially the Point ground without gimp, might be Regency. A nice selection, although I’m not much in favor of cutting short pieces off of good laces.
Provenance: Some labeled as having been made by a Mrs. Roberts.

Comments: A wide border of Mechlin, thin motifs characteristic of the Directoire style, which puts it around 1900. Good design and technique, short repeat designed to be ruffled. 8 rows of small circular woven areas with gimp used as esprits which adds to the difficulty of the piece. Note the little star-shaped motifs just above the main border.

Comments: An Irish Crochet collar, Clones knots picots. The photos are rather over-exposed so a little difficult to appreciate the stitches. Good raised work, motifs tightly done.
Provenance: In the seller’s family for over 90 years.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Quite a few breaks in the brides, some along the neckline.

Comments: A long, typically wide border of Chantilly, ombre shaded type. The action is really in the lower half with the upper half just rows of esprits above a racroc line. Hard to spot a racroc line in the lower part, but it’s probably there. To me this makes the design a little odd, but the quality of the floral motifs is so good that you don’t notice it much.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see the ends to tell if they are cut. Engrelure attached.
Damage: Occasional pinhole, a little detachment of the engrelure.
Soilage: Nothing obvious, but hard to tell with black lace.
Finish: No obvious wrinkling or creasing.

Auction ends: May 27, 2014 18:43:51 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller galw001, Oakhurst, California, United States
Comments: Since this piece is finished on both long sides it might be a narrow scarf. A lot of the piece has been photographed upside down, so I think the raised work is better that it first appears. Probably a late 19th or early 20th c Italian needlelace, although France is a possibility. I’m leaning toward Italy. The motifs are carefully shaped with the stitches following the outlines. Could have used more closeups to really get a good look at the stitches. No decorative fillings other than a few cloth stitch variations, and the decoration of the raised work, brides, and outer edges is quite fine.
Provenance: From a California family collection
Condition:
Modifications: Cut at ends. Gathered into a kind of bow – I suppose this could be removed.
Damage: Rare broken bride
Soilage: Minor yellowing and light spotting from storage.
Finish: No obvious folds or wrinkles.

Comments: A Brussels Duchesse handkerchief edge which has been adapted into perhaps a collar? No raised work in the Point de Gaze inserts, but somenice deocrative ‘mode’ fillings. The bobbinlace is quite finely worked with some good raised elements.
Provenance: None cited.

Comments: A Milanese shaped piece – this one has an earlier feel. Minimal brides, fairly elaborate clothwork and fillings. The brides look like two twisted pair, occasional plaited. The clothwork is very tightly done with a good patina. It’s been extensively reworked into a ‘U’ shape. Difficult to follow the pattern.
Provenance: Ex. coll. Pat Earnshaw
Condition:
Modifications: Reshaped from larger piece or pieces. Seamed at back, new edgings added.
Damage: Reasonably good apart from general wear. A few broken brides with some repairs.

Comments: Two sections of a Gros Point border. The lace looks relatively new. I think the top and bottom borders are original, but they are not what you would find in an early piece. It looks like it came from the same manufacturer as the piece above by this seller, probably late 19th or early 20th century Italian. There are a lot of similarities between the two.
Provenance: From a California family collection
Condition:
Modifications: Cut at ends, fringe added to one end of each.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Minor yellowing.
Finish: No creases, a little distorted at raw cut ends.

Comments: A Mechlin border in the style of Louis XVI, probably early 19th c. For some reason the expand option isn’t working on the photos, so a bit hard to look at details. I think there’s half-stitch in the leaves, which tends to be a slightly later technique. Good pattern of drooping flowers with a slightly scalloped lower edge, and 10 rows of Esprits above.
Provenance: Ex. coll. Pat Earnshaw.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut and secured at ends, engrelure added.
Damage: A few holes in the mesh, mainly toward one end.

Comments: A very long border of late 17th or early 18th c Flemish lace. We don’t exactly know the origin of this lace, might also be Valenciennes, which was a much larger industry. But people tend to label patterns like this as Binche. Beautiful meandering design, just like a snowfall. Extremely unusual length for a piece like this. Difficult to tell the condition of the footside edge because it sits on top of the engrelure, but I don’t think it has been cut.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Hard to tell the condition of the ends, but I think they are cut. Engrelure added.

Comments: An impressive Valenciennes fan with elaborately carved Mother of Pearl (abalone) sticks). The lace is ombre shaded in a sophisticated, naturalistic design. I think this was made all in one piece, not Val de Gand. The sticks are quite elaborate, and I think the lace would have stood well with something more plain. But it does seem to work altogether.
Provenance: Duvelleroy, Paris box.
Condition:
Modifications: None. Tassle missing, if there was one originally.

Comments: An Honiton Point fan (honiton motifs with a needle-made ground). The motifs are quite finely done with some interesting flowers at the mid right hand side. Good raised work, small areas of woven tally fillings, and I especially like the detail in the fern leaves. As with the piece reviewed above, the sticks may be a bit overly elaborate for the piece, but that was the original design choice. The tassel has survived.

Comments: A bonnet veil of Brussels needlelace appliqued onto a droschel ground. The net is made in strips about 1″ wide, sewn together with a special bobbinlace stitch. This type of lace ceased production around 1830 when machine net became widely available. So the piece would probably date from 1800 to around that time. The design has delicate, naturalistic wheat ears and small flowers. Typical wider lower border with a narrower design around the other three sides – no allowance for threading a ribbon through the top.
Provenance: Ex. coll. Pat Earnshaw. Illustrated in “Bobbin and Needle Lace”, fig. 119.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Pulls in the ground, some repairs that look aligned with the net seams.
Soilage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
