Size: 1.9″ x 64″
Starting Price: 35.00 GBP
Auction ends: Jun 22, 2014 11:12:16 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A narrow border of 18th c Mechlin, Louis XV design, so middle of the century. The photos aren’t close enough to tell exactly what the ground is, but it might be a tight cinq trou variation.  Note the more open areas around some of the floral work, unusual for this lace.  It still has the gimp surrounding the motifs with area  bit plain and blocky, with a few fillings. But overall quite a nice design I find it very effective.  An unusual piece, Mechlin experimented with many ground early on.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut both ends, engrelure attached.
Damage: slight wear, nothing serious.
Soilage:  Pale ivory color.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Size: ~2.25″ (no engrelure) x 1 yard 11″
Starting Price: $135.00
Auction ends: Jun 22, 2014 11:43:00 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller lacemerchant, Whiting, Indiana, United States
Comments: Another Mechlin border, later than the one above, but transitioning to the Louis XVI style.  You see lappets or even cap backs made of this type of lace where a single length has been doubled back to match the design as the seller illustrates. I agree with the seller’s date, 1760-1770.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut both ends, very white engrelure attached.
Damage: A few small holes in the mesh.
Soilage:  Slight golden cast, seller suggests it might have been dyed.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Starting Price: 4.99 GBP
Auction ends: Jun 22, 2014 13:57:09 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller whirlycat, west country, United Kingdom
Comments: A Carrickmacross guipure handkerchief edge. The work is quite elaborate,  crisply done with well defined picots on the brides and the typical looped picots on the outer edge.  Note the needle-made fillings. Really good Carrickmacross guipure like this doesn’t come along often, although the piece has seen better days.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Central cloth removed, may have been adapted to a collar, seller cites hooks and eyes present..
Damage: Frayed inside edge.
Soilage:  Seller cites slight staining, some damage at one corner.
Finish: Wrinkled, won’t lie flat. May have been washed at some point.

Size: 2.5″ x 1 yard 19″
Starting Price: $65.00
Auction ends: Jun 22, 2014 14:42:03 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller lacemerchant, Whiting, Indiana, United States
Comments: A border of Bobbinlace with droschel ground, around 1760.  There are no hard and fast guidelines to distinguish Belgian and English work of this period, but pieces are usually attributed to Devon based on general style which a more naive design. And the English pieces seem to have larger areas of fillings. Note in this piece some technical errors, like the lack of consistent use of raised edges in the motifs. I’d say it is likely a Devo piece, fairly typical work.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Ends cut, engrelure added.
Damage: A few pinholes in the mesh and occasional broken bride filling.
Soilage:  Seller says it has been freshly washed and clean, but gives no details.
Finish: A little wrinkled.

http://tinyurl.com/lvxnsfs Very old FLEMISH BOBBIN LACE DEEP FLOUNCE YARDAGE Collector study piece
Size: 15″ x 3 yards 10″
Starting Price: $325.00
Auction ends: Jun 22, 2014 18:01:21 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller lacemerchant, Whiting, Indiana, United States
Comments: A deep border of what is generally referred to as Brussels bobbinlace with bride ground. Early 18th c, around 1730-40. Large pieces like this were generally used to decorate furniture. The design is a bit haphazard, but if you look carefully you can see a repeat in the pattern.  The design is much more sophisticated than the Brabant style, and represents an important development in Flemish lace. This is an interesting and important piece, although the condition is a bit rough.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: One end seems cut, can’t see the other end, engrelure added.
Damage: Extensive holes and repairs, but the damage sees fairly well localized. Large areas are OK.
Soilage:  Seller says it has been freshly washed and ‘generally clean’, but gives no details and that makes me nervous.
Finish: No obvious creases, but it is a bit wrinkled.

Comments: A typical Cantu bobbinlace round table cover with a deep lace edge. Photo shows one bird next to the center cloth, I don’t know if there are others. Excellent work, standard flower head and hook pattern.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Non
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage:  Looks clean
Finish: I do see fold lines in the center cloth.

Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Irvington, New York, United States
Comments: A Point de Gaze bertha with double layered raised petal roses. This piece is especially notable for the extensive decorative ‘mode’ fillings, many of which are in grid form. The design is fairly standard, but with a lot of extra technical details.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos. Mesh looks in good shape
Soilage:  Looks clean
Finish: A little wrinkled, and the motif lines aren’t quite as crisp as I would like. Might be an indication of a past washing, however the piece doesn’t look much used.

Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Irvington, New York, United States
Comments: A bertha of Brussels Duchesse, carrying the idea to an extreme. The Point de Gaze insert extends in a deep band all along the neckline, with raised petal roses. Only simple fillings, no decorative ‘modes’ except in the rose centers. The Duchesse bobbinlace has conventional motifs along the outer edge.  Interesting concept – I haven’t seen this before.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: A few pinholes in the point de gaze mesh.
Soilage:  Looks clean.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Starting Price: 20.00 GBP

Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A bobbinlace applique and it does look like a droschel ground, although I wish there were some closeups to tell for certain. A lot of the design has the thin line structure associated with the early 19th c.  Not much in the way of fillings, but it doesn’t really need them.  Interesting piece.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut both ends. Remnants of some tulle attached at top.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage:  Ivory color
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Offered by: Ebay seller avivb, Raynham, Massachusetts, United States
Comments: An Irish Crochet frontpiece with attached high collar. The motifs are fairly large, and note the elaborate raised work on the thistles. The roses also have multiple raised petals. All worked quite tightly, and the ground resembles some early patterns. Crocheted loops in the picots.  All tightly worked.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage:  Looks clean.

Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Irvington, New York, United States
Comments: A narrow scarf of later 19th c or perhaps 20thc Point d’Angleterre, meaning bobbin-made motifs with a Point de Gaze needlelace ground. Note the elaborate ‘sunburst’ fillings at the ends.  Interesting design, definitely breaking out of the typical 2nd Empire mode – more Art Nouveau.
Provenance:  Museum deaccession.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Seller cites some very minor tiny repairs.
Soilage:  Looks clean
Finish: Doesn’t lay perfectly flat, but no obvious wrinkles or creases.

Offered by: Ebay seller lacemerchant, Whiting, Indiana, United States
Comments: The design of this piece is early 18th c, although it could have been made later.  It appears to be reworked from a larger piece, and new brides have been put in to fit. Interesting clothwork with the large holes, along with some varied fillings stitches.  This was Flanders’ response to contemporary Milanese laces.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Extensively reworked from the original piece.
Damage: Frayed neck edge.
Soilage:  Seller says it is freshly washed and clean, but provides no details on the process.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Jun 27, 2014 10:59:47 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: I’ll put these two together since they are rather similar. A moderately wide and a narrow border of Honiton guipure, well out of the snails/slugs style. It’s basically a rose and pinnate leaf motif with some different flowers along the border. Usually three picots on each plaited bride. Small, well-done motifs with a nicely organized scattered structure and a well-defined repeat in both. Woven tally leadwork fillings.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: wider border – One end looks finished, the other cut. Engrelure added.
narrower border – Can’t really tell the condition of the ends although one might be finished.
Damage: wider border – Seller cites several small repairs, and an area of damage to the top edge (quite small, mainly the engrelure).
narrower border – several broken brides, damage to edge, some damage in on set of filling stitches.
Soilage:  One red mark on the wider border.  Pale ivory color on the second one.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles on either.

Offered by: Ebay seller madhouserags, Concord, New Hampshire, United States
Comments: I’m stumped on this one, and have been looking through books on point ground bobbinlaces. My best guess is some kind of Lille lace, although the ‘fond chant’ filling is still puzzling.  The design is a kind of ‘pottenkant’, but with widely space motifs in a pattern that is less sophisticated than usually found.  Not enough closeups on the additional edging to tell what that is, perhaps a Mechlin.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut, folded and secured on the ends. A different lace added along one long border.
Damage: Seller cites 7-8 tiny holes in the mesh.
Soilage:  I hope it’s not as yellow as it looks in the photo.
Finish: No obvious folds or creases.

Comments: A fine border of Valenciennes, square mesh ground. A fairly elaborate design, rightly worked.  This is a lace widely used for bordering bed linens, Edwardian white gowns and nightgowns.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: One join 14″ from one end.  Cut both ends.
Damage:
Soilage:  I hope it’s not as yellow as it looks in the photo. Seller cites a few age-related stains.

Comments: A fine border of Brussels bobbinlace with droschel ground, mid 18th c. Figures in this of lace are fairly rare, although here the birds are a bit rough in outline and fillings are good, but not too varied.  The thread in this piece looks quite fine, with excellent technique and interesting design.
Provenance:  Ex. coll. Pat Earnshaw
Condition:
Modifications: One end looks secured, the other cut.
Damage:   Some pinholes in the ground.
Soilage:  Seller cites a creamy white color with light localized age marks
Finish: A few vertical fold creases. It does appear to lay flat.

Comments: Later 18th c Alençon lappets. Not enough detail to examine the join, but nothing jumps out at me in that area. I doubt these were made in one piece, although it is possible. This is a typical later 18th c lappet set – the design of this particular set is fairly simple for the style and the decorative ‘mode’ fillings at the ends are something you see quite often in this period. In short it’s not as elaborate as contemporary examples, however the condition (aside from one repair) is exceptional.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Probably joined, although I can’t see the details.
Damage:  One repair to the ground.
Soilage:  Hope it’s not as yellow as it appears in the photos.
Finish: No obvious folds or wrinkles.

Comments: A dress front with attached high neck collar of Irish Crochet.  Good ‘pinwheel’ design incorporating trefoils, roses with raised centers and fan shaped flowers, also with raised centers. Picots look like crocheted loops, but I’m not sure.  Good, tight work.
Provenance:  None cited.

Offered by: Ebay seller madhouserags, Concord, New Hampshire, United States
Comments: A handkerchief of Youghal needlelace. Note the rather delicate attachment to the cloth, typical of pieces like this.  Also has the typical double brides, and good decorative fillings.  The design is not too well thought out, although the corners almost resemble a heraldic shield. Might be my imagination.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage:  Occasional broken thread, especially in filling. Small separatio from fabric in one corner.
Soilage:  Rather yellowed (if photo color is correct), and a few red spots.
Finish: Fold lines in the cloth, a little wrinkling.

Comments: A square of Maltese, too small to be a shawl, so table cover seems reasonable.  A large circular medallion in the center, several layers in depth, with well-done guipure outside that (hard to do against the woven leaf mesh ground). The outside has circular medallions with Maltese crosses.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None

Comments: A narrow scarf of Point de Gaze, quite elaborate design. Excellent decorative ‘mode’ fillings.  Note the use of especially heavy outlining cordonnets for extra relief. And a the use of stripes in some of the ground.  A higher end market piece.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:

Comments: A handkerchief of Duchesse de Bruges, good design using typical motifs.  I think the flowers in the corners might be pansies with a little raised work on half-stitch background.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Nothing obvious, and I think the spot pointed to by the seller might be a join not too well done by the lacemaker.

Comments: A bonnet veil of Brussels bobbinlace application on machine net. A few needle-made fillings in the flowers.  This veil would be easy to see through as it doesn’t have the extensive esprits in the upper ground, just a few sprigs along above the lower border.  It has a rather windswept floral design, with a narrow border up the sides.

Comments: A handkerchief of Duchesse de Bruges, very finely worked.  The motifs almost seem translucent, and notice the line-drawing effect of whole against half stitch in some leaves.
