Starting Price: 82.00 GBP
Auction ends: Jul 06, 2014 11:15:14 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller winterwonderlandfairy, london, United Kingdom
Comments: A narrow border of Brussels Duchesse, no raised work in the Point de Gaze inserts. Good precise work in the bobbinlace, conventional motifs.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: One end cut around the motifs, can’t see the other end.
Damage: Seller cites some damage on the heading tape, and some ‘holes where stitch has come undone’, I don’t know what that means. I can’t find any obvious damage in the photos.
Soilage:  Looks clean.
Finish:  No obvious wrinkles or creases.

Size: 15″ neckline, 16.2″ front neck to bottom
Starting Price: 25.00 GBP
Auction ends: Jul 06, 2014 11:22:26 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A shaped dress front of Venise needlelace with raised borders. I think it might be Italian, or an outside chance it is French. Note the raised borders are all uniform thickness.  There is a little decorative work in the clothwork. Good picoting in the bride elements and along the edges of the raised work.  I’m not certain, but the thread might be linen.  The design is a kind of later 19th c adaptation of Point de France, with the symmetric almost candelabra pattern.
Provenance:  None cited
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Occasional broken bride, a little neck wear.
Soilage:  Seller calls it a ‘putty color’ with some discoloration.
Finish:  No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Offered by: Ebay seller winterwonderlandfairy, london, United Kingdom
Comments: Two cuffs of Duchesse de Bruges. There are only a few motifs, but neatly and elegantly worked. I like the contrast between the larger flowers and thin winding leaves.  This has a feel of early 20th c Sluis design.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None. Look unused.
Damage: One broken thread in a woven filling.
Soilage: Hard to tell the color, maybe a little beige.
Finish:  No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Starting Price: $78.00
Auction ends: Jul 06, 2014 11:27:33 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller vintageblessings, Meridian, Idaho, United States
Comments: A border of Point de Gaze with raised petal roses, some doubled. Extensive decorative ‘mode’ fillings, note especially the large grids of circles and picoted knots. The fillings along the lower border or so precise that they approach the technical level of Alençon. Note also the joined picots along the lower border, almost in imitation of Alençon horsehair. Naturalistic, romantic design.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see the ends to tell if they are cut.  Engrelure added.
Damage: Some damage to the engrelure which isn’t important, but the small holes and pinholes in the mesh are. One separation in the lower border.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish:  No obvious creases or wrinkling.

Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.  Seller found one technical mistake, I agree.

Comments: A bertha of Duchesse de Bruxelles with raised petal roses in the Point de Gaze inserts. Conventional bobbinlace motifs with a little raised work in places.  A good typical example.
Provenance:  Museum deaccession.
Condition:
Modifications: None, although the ends don’t precisely match up.  I think that’s part of the design.

Comments: Silk Irish Crochet is often considered a very late 19th century product, however I don’t think the full history of it is yet understood.   The pieces in my collection are very soft to the touch, and there are certain technical limitations in working with the slippery thread. The little florets on the neckline and outside edge of this piece are quite typical of silk crochet. This type of work doesn’t come up for sale very often.

Starting Price: $45.00 with reserve
Auction ends: Jul 07, 2014 10:05:26 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Irvington, New York, United States
Comments: I’m going to stick my neck out here and say that this is an English needlelace, mid to to late 17th c.  For several reasons, but mainly because of the look of the needlelace stitches. In English work it’s a little known fact that stitches are knotted, not twisted buttonhole, and although there aren’t detailed closeups here, it does look like that’s the case here. The motifs have a rather clunky look with a heavier thread, not as refined as in contemporary Italian products. Although the overall design flows quite nicely.  There is also no gimp on the motifs.  I’m showing a closeup of a similar English piece in my own collection next to the thumbnail below for comparison. Also note the picot decoration is the same as the edge decoration in the Ebay piece (and my piece also has those loops on the bottom edge).
As for the form, it’s hard to say. I would argue that the piece has been cut down at the Engrelure side and cut at the ends. These were normally made in quite wide, long lengths.
Provenance:  Label from Metropolitan museum reads.. 1675-1700.. France/Italy
Condition:
Modifications: Engrelure edge looks cut down, and ends look cut.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos, just a little worn. I wuld argue that there might be a few replaced, undecorated brides.
Soilage: Looks clean
Finish:  No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Irvington, New York, United States
Comments: A narrow early Valenciennes border with ‘partridge eye’ ground and some nice fillings. This is one of my favorite laces, although the ‘line drawing effect isn’t too strong here.  An elegant, well made design, very fine thread.
Provenance:  Museum deaccession.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see the ends to tell if cut.
Damage: A few small holes, and a little rough on the foot edge. Some fraying along the header edge.
Soilage: Seller cites a few age storage stains.
Finish:  Some gentle folds throughout and a few sharp creases along header edge. This matters in linen lace, these creases are difficult to get out.

Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Irvington, New York, United States
Comments: I normally don’t review offerings with more than one lace, but these two are similar and interesting. The top piece is a raised petal Point de Gaze, but with a more Venise type lower border. The lower piece is a fully developed Venise with decorative clothwork, raised elements and ‘mode’ fillings. Note the rather light edges to the bars in the header, this is a Point de Gaze technique, as are the rings of raised work.  An elaborate and fun piece.
Provenance:  Museum deaccession.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see the ends to tell if cut.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: The lower piece has a darker hue.
Finish:  No obvious creasing or wrinkles.

Comments: A reasonably wide border of Irish crochet, with what looks like Clones knot picots. There are only two motifs, two different flowerheads arranged in a 4-headed pinwheel. Raised rings are placed at the base of each flower. It’s a simple, effective design, tightly worked. IC border of this quality don’t come along too often.
Provenance:  None cites.
Condition:
Modifications: One end cut, can’t see the other end.
Damage: Seller sites a few wear spots ‘at top’, maybe 2 broken threads.

Comments: A mounted Duchesse de Bruges parasol cover. Note the needlelace rings at flower centers, but this is not enough to kick it into the Brussels Duchesse category. It’s a bit difficult to see the lace pattern against the white backing, but it appears a conventional design, tending toward a Bruges bloemwerk.
Provenance:  Museum deaccession

Modifications: None
Damage: Lining shredded. The lace looks OK.

Offered by: Ebay seller reddolly123, Nottingham, United Kingdom
Comments: A rectangular shawl of Brussels bobbinlace application on machine net, mounted as a bridal train. Difficult to see the design on the white background, but it appears to be a rather windswept floral arrangement. typical technique with slightly large motifs. Fillings seem to be needlerun.
Provenance:  Name of the bride was Mrs. Nionis.
Condition:
Modifications: An assembled piece.  Some attachment hooks and eyes.
Damage: Mounting seems to have kept the piece intact.
Soilage: Ecru color with some brown spots, especially on the tulle. Or maybe the seller is referring to the mounting fabric, hard to tell.

Comments: A Brussels bobbinlace on machine net, delicately done, good design with needle-made fillings. But the form is very odd, and looks deliberate, although the edges above the lappets look cut. Some some reassembly likely.  I’ll agree with the seller, probably intended for a cap.

Offered by: Ebay seller ncnonny, Rye, New York, United States
Comments: A Point de Gaze handkerchief, no raised work.  Pieces like this depend heavily on design and the quality of the filling stitches.  The design here is quite dense and there is only one type of filling, with no shading.  High end market pieces of this lace can be spectacular, this one is getting there, but has a way to go. These handkerchiefs were made throughout the 2nd half of the 19th century.

Comments: An very wide, very long flounce of bobbinlace application on machine net.  The dimensions are larger than what we usually think of in a crinoline flounce, but I think this was still meant to be mounted on a skirt. The motifs are a bit large and loosely worked, but everything fills the space well. Note the extensive esprits which go up high, but not all the way to the edge.  An impressive looking piece.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:

Comments: A capback of Brussels bobbinlace with droschel ground. The ground is worked in vertical strips which are ‘sewn’ together. The mesh is also sewn into the edges of the motifs with extra treads carried across the back to the next section of mesh. This is a late 18th century design, somewhat reminiscent of contemporary Alençon designs. Fillings are fairly simple, and the use of the woven tallies in the fillings is unusual for Brussels lace. There’s an off chance this could be English.

Comments: A straight edge border of Valenciennes with the snow ground. I’ve been staring at this piece a lot – it almost seems too pristine, and it looks wider than it really is. The ground is a bit overpowering, and the work is just a little loose. But the thread does appear to be linen, and if I compare it with examples in my own collection (see the example lappet next to the thumbnail below), I’m finally convinced that it is an early piece.

Comments: A lappet scarf of Chantilly, probably Belgian due to the very black color – sign of a thicker thread. Gives it a kind of dense pattern effect. Sometimes the tension in the halfstitch isn’t quite consistent, but that’s minor. A good, standard example.

Comments: Guipure lace like this tends to wander dangerously into unknown territory on attribution. Beds, France, Spain are all possibilities, perhaps even Eastern Europe. It does appear to be cotton.  I think the design is too simple for Beds, even though they did this type of assembled work. It’s also too simple for Le Puy, but other parts of France can’t be ruled out.  Spain also did this type of work, and that might be a fair guess. The shawl is assembled from bands of lace sewn together horizontally, with a scalloped border.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: A piece assembled from bands of lace.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Seller cites ‘clean mid cream colour with occasional age discoloration’.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Comments: A large framed Point de Gaze fan with elaborately carved Mother of Pearl sticks. No raised petals in the lace; it is the best type of flat Point de Gaze with elaborate decorative ‘mode’ fillings. The design is very naturalistic and well worked. I do wonder if the tassle is original, it doesn’t seem elaborate enough for a piece of this quality.

Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Seller cites mild age discoloration.

Comments: A striking Carrickmacross collar with the typical looped picots on the edges. The design is very Art Nouveau, late 19th c or early 20th c.  Interesting needlerun filling pattern, and the swirling design is beautifully worked.  If I interpret the measurement correctly, it’s larger than it looks in the photo.

Comments: A Flemish ‘Van Dyke’ border, 2nd quarter 17th c. Lace in Flanders at this period took several forms, and it’s worth looking at Levey’s “Lace: A History”, plates 149a (where she called the motifs ‘ill defined’), and the top plate in figure 157. The extensive sewings in this piece remind me of contemporary l’Aquila laces; it doesn’t have the more continuous nature of other Flemish laces of this period. Nevertheless authors do ascribe it to Flanders in this period. It is rather a challenge to figure out how this piece was constructed.
Provenance:  Acquired from a Dutch collector.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut both ends. Perhaps cut along the straight edge? That border is secured with a modern thread.
Damage: A little frayed along the edges.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: Some light creasing.

Comments: A Point de Gaze bertha with raised petal roses, double layers. Lots of work with chains of raised rings, but not much variation in the decorative ‘mode’ fillings.  The design is elaborate and romantic.  It doesn’t appear to be quite as long as other berthas; the ends don’t overlap when laid flat.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos. Mesh looks in good condition.
Soilage: Looks clean.

Comments: Round hole Valenciennes lappets joined together at the tops, late 18th century.  It is a beautifully light and delicate design, with lots of ground.  The lappets do appear to have been cut short before joining, the length is a few inches shorter than what you would expect for lappets of the period.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Lappet tops cut and joined together. Sewn to a cloth backing.
Damage: A few loose threads in the mesh, very minor.

Comments: Border of Gros Point de Venise with well sculpted raised work. Good clothwork decoration, and overall it has a rather plain appearance, typical of earlier work (this is not a bad thing). More like carved ivory with simple ornaments on the raised work and very few brides. I detect one repeat of the pattern, but whether there was more along the long sides is unknown. Very unusual to find a piece like this intact.
Provenance:  Labeled by a Flemish/Dutch collector.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut both ends, Engrelure added. I don’t think the picoted border is original. Sewn to a cloth backing.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean.

Comments: A large border of Flemish lace, but dating is problematic. Yes, the photo in the Gruuthusemuseum catalog is the same lace, dated simply ’17th century’. It would have to be later in the century because of the type of ground used.  There’s a lot of this looped tape lace around, and we really haven’t adequately identified the origin. Sometimes I think that the design was meant more for metallic laces, and these are just lucky survivors. So in lieu of other evidence I’ll go with the late 17th c Flemish origin, but someone really needs to investigate this whole subject thoroughly.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: I think the end finishing has been added later.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Seller cites ‘3 tiny, negligible stains’
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Comments: A long border of black silk Guipure, possibly Le Puy or some other French center. The long thin leaves in the design aren’t typically Le Puy, but I’ll guess it’s somewhere in that area.
