Size: 14″ square
Starting Price: $85.00
Auction ends: Jul 27, 2014 10:23:04 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller ogop, Lincoln, Massachusetts, United States
Comments: A Duchesse de Bruges handkerchief. This does a lot with few motifs, and the work is carefully done. Gimp edges, no raised work, which pushes it toward the Bloemwerk side, but not quite out of the Duchesse category. I especially like the treatment next to the cloth. Some thought has gone into this piece and it has a nice presence.
Provenance:  From a local estate
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Some pinholes in the center cloth.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: Horizontal and vertical fold creases.

251594110296   Sold for $91.00, 2 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/o9pxtjw BEAUTIFUL FINE ANTIQUE LACE FLOUNCE VERY LONG 250 INS BY 13.5 INS BRUSSELS LACE?
Size: 13.5″ x 250″
Starting Price: 0.99 GBP
Auction ends: Jul 27, 2014 11:07:07 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller celestial20_0, Lanarkshire, United Kingdom
Comments: A moderately wide border of Brussels applique on machine net.  Romantic, rather vertical design, with some simple needlelace fillings.  No esprits in the upper ground. The motifs are well done, although a little large – the design isn’t quite as sophisticated as the typical ‘crinoline flounce’. Which for me, keeps it out of that category. I’m thinking it’s a later 19th c piece.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut one end, can’t see the other end.  (On applications I don’t mention the engrelure, since this was always added to this type of lace).
Damage: Some holes and tears in the tulle, especially near motifs. nLooks like two repairs near the top edge, although these might just be loose threads. Some of the engrelure is coming use.
Soilage: Some localized dark brown staining.
Finish: Some light wrinkling, often along the foot edge.

351123122543   Sold for 330.00 GBP, 10 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/pjc9smn HANDMADE PONIT DE VENISE MEDALLION INSET NEEDLE LACE HERALDIC COAT OF ARMS 6″
Size: 6″ square
Starting Price: 0.99 GBP
Auction ends: Jul 27, 2014 18:50:45 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller kuchcollectiblesandvintagelinens, Ronkonkoma, New York United States
Comments: A needlelace medallion showing the Royal coat of arms of the United Kingdom. I can’t see enough detail to tell how the cordonnet is buttonholed, but it looks like the loose Brussels (Zele) method. About the only reason someone would do this design in Belgium is for patriotic display during WWI, so this just might qualify as a “War Lace”. There’s no real way of telling without the actual provenance.  The work is quite detailed and nicely done.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: There’s a hole in the bridework by the unicorn’s tail, but I can’t see an obvious break.
Soilage: Seller cites ‘storage shadowing’, not sure I know what that means.
Finish: No obvious creases – edge is a little twisted.

360997611166   Sold for $128.00, 6 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/qfq84vs Vintage Irish Crochet Lae Collar-Light Ecru
Size: ~4″ to 6″ wide, 14″ neckline, 33″ outside edge.
Starting Price: $45.00 Buy-it-Now
Auction ends: Jul 27, 2014 20:00:33 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller celestial20_0, Lanarkshire, United Kingdom
Comments: An Irish Crochet collar, I think the picots are crocheted loops.  Numerous raised rings, especially used in a grape pattern. There are 5 different motifs, all closely worked.  Arrangement is nicely done, although symmetry is thrown off a tiny bit due to placement.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Minor break top left inside edge.
Soilage: Seller cites a light ecru color – hard to tell it looks so yellow in the photo. This is a lighting issues.  Closeups are better.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

251572613462   No bids.

Starting Price: $29.99
Auction ends: Jul 28, 2014 03:40:06 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Irvington, New York, New York
Comments: An embroidered machine net triangular shawl or mantilla, fairly small.  Good needlerun design with a few filling stitches and a little cutwork at flower centers.  The edge looks buttonholed, although the closeup isn’t too clear.  I’m guessing it was made for the Spanish market.
Provenance:  Museum deaccession
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos
Soilage: Seller cites a cream color with a few storage spots.
Finish: Some fold creases.

Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Irvington, New York, New York
Comments: An border of Duchesse de Bruges with some tiny needle-made rings used as flower centers. Irregular brides are not picoted. The design is not particularly sophisticated – more a middle-market piece. Little raised work, more on the bloemwerk side.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see the ends to tell if they are cut.  Engrelure added.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: Some light vertical creasing.

Size: each ~6″ x 10″
Starting Price: $29.99
Auction ends: Jul 28, 2014 03:53:46 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Irvington, New York, New York
Comments: Four ovals of a free reticella needlelace, probably Greek given the angular appearance and the raised work decoration.  All basically the same pattern, although the third one has a different ground and is facing the opposite way from the others. We see a lot of figural bobbinlace from Italy like this, but needlelace doesn’t come up too often.
Provenance:  Museum deaccession
Condition:
Modifications: None.  Note the blue embroidery on the 2nd piece, looks like initials.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Seller cites a few storage stains.
Finish: No obvious creasing, edges on two of them aren’t quite sharp.

Offered by: Ebay seller celestial20_0, Lanarkshire, United Kingdom
Comments: A Maltese scarf and a dress front. The dress front is fairly plain. The scarf has some nice guipure and a row of sun pattern around the outer edge.  A nice, typical example.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Size: 2.6″ x 53″
Starting Price: 30.00 GBP
Auction ends: Jul 28, 2014 11:19:52 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A border of pieced bobbinlace with droschel ground, mid 18th c. This has an English feel to me with larger, more naive motifs, large areas of fillings of picoted brides and some partridge eyes.  The design does go through variations within the general pattern along the length.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut both ends, engrelure added. The picot edge at the lower border is a later addition.  I think I see one seam near one end.
Damage: Repairs to the ground, general wear. I think one area of fillings has been replaced, no closeup to tell for certain. A few pinholes in the mesh.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

http://tinyurl.com/lnueuum Beautiful Antique Vtg Hand Crocheted 26″ Irish Crochet Lace Table Doily Doilies
Size: 26″ in diameter
Starting Price: $38.00
Auction ends: Jul 28, 2014 19:15:19 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller umustcit, Saint Joseph, Missouri, United States
Comments: A table cover of geometric Irish Crochet with a few raised peta roses. The seller has other listings of accompanying doilies, #131248371287, #151361312710, #131248381765. I think this is an Irish work mainly because of the presences of the typical three-branched motifs. I think the ground is needle-made, although there aren’t enough closeups to tell for certain. The border is also a bit atypical. Looks like an early 20th c product.
Provenance:  Estate sale.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Seller cites some very light age spots.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

131248388483   Sold for $52.00, 2 bidders.

Starting Price: 30.00 GBP
Auction ends: Jul 29, 2014 06:45:40 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller discover4, London, United Kingdom
Comments: A border of plaited bobbinlace. With the plaited leaves, my first thought is that it’s a 19th c German piece, or perhaps a Cluny. However the trails of what looks like a cord, is a technique that was actually patented by Mrs. Treadwin in England later in the 19th c.  Since I read her recent biography I’m relabeling a lot of my ‘Cluny’ pieces as English, and that might apply here also.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Looks intact, but I’m not sure if the ends are original.
Damage: Seller cites a few minor repairs and a rejoin (which I can’t find).
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: Seller says it is stiff, might have been starched.

Comments: A dress front with very long frontpieces of Point de Gaze. Raised petal roses with two layers, and some good decorative ‘mode’ fillings.  A good design and an unusual form, although a little hard to tell since the overall front photo is out of focus.
Provenance:  None cited.

Comments: A Belgian Rosaline collar, no perls. There is some raised work, interesting fillings, and delicate technique. I especially like the edge treatment.  Not your typical Rosaline, but still within the style.

Condition:
Modifications: None

Offered by: Ebay seller gede34, France métropolitaine
Comments: A very wide, long Chantilly border. Typical romantic floral border with swags along the lower edge.  No esprits in the upper ground. Hard to tell the density of color, which is one means of distinguishing Belgian from French products.
Condition:
Modifications: One end might be finished, can’t see the other end.  Engrelure added at top and one end.
Damage: A few racroc separations and some small holes..
Soilage: Looks clean, but hard to tell with black lace.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A border of Honiton guipure. The seller cautions about two ‘pieced-in’ area, which is correct. But they don’t interrupt the design too much. Overall this is a very good quality Honiton, dense and well worked.
Condition:
Modifications: Some parts pieced in, cut one end, other end might be original.
Damage: Some broken brides.
Soilage: Localized and uneven color throughout.
Finish: No obvious creases, a bit wrinkled.

Starting Price: 195.00 EUR
Auction ends: Jul 31, 2014 08:49:22 Paris
Offered by: Ebay seller gede34, France métropolitaine, France
Comments: A border of Brussels bobbin and needlelace applique on machine net.  Romantic design, finely worked, esprits in the upper ground.  The needlelace band above the lower edge is unusual. I especially like the fringed ‘leaves’ at the lower border. This isn’t the highest end market piece, but very respectable.
Condition:
Modifications: Almost looks like both ends are finished, but hard to tell form the photos.
Damage: Some joining in of the mesh, might be original from the factory.  Net is in very good condition.
Soilage: Occasional small brown spot.
Finish: Some vertical fold marks.

Starting Price: 25.00 GBP
Auction ends: Aug 01, 2014 10:20:40 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A border of Brussels bobbinlace application on machine net. This is a narrow piece, and the motifs are rather finely done. Esprits n the ground – this is a complex piece given the size. Wish there were more.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see the ends to tell if they are cut.
Damage: A few pinholes, I see one repair in the tulle.
Soilage: Seller cites occasional small brown age mark.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles, although not much is showon in the photos. The motifs do have that slightly shrunken washed look, although the tulle seems fine.

Starting Price: 10.00 EUR
Auction ends: Aug 02, 2014 07:03:52 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller garden*hill, Reading, United Kingdom
Comments: A bertha of Maltese lace.  Maltese is very often found on Ebay, in fact according to my records for the past 3 years, it is the most often found type. But berthas are a little rare. This one has a 3-layer construction; flower and crosses on the outer edge, crosses embedded in a ground of flowers in the middle, and wheat-ear pattern along the neck.  Borders at the ends are also separate, but this is probably original.
Condition:
Modifications: I think none.
Damage: Occasional loose thread. It has an overall worn appearance.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: Wrinkled, especially along the edges.
