http://tinyurl.com/p5ths4u A Beautiful Antique Maltese lace Centre Piece circa 1880
Size: 98 cm diameter
Starting Price: 48.00 GBP
Auction ends: Aug 03, 2014 11:20:32 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller winterwonderlandfairy, london, United Kingdom
Comments: A Maltese round piece, and the small hole in the center argues that this might be a parasol cover.  Although it is a bit heavy for that application, and the radial pattern seems to require many more ribs than are normally used for a parasol. So it could also be a table cover.  It is a beautifully made piece, four or five concentric bands including some fairly elaborate guipure.  Excellent quality Maltese was made well into the 1950’s and often brought home by sailors from the Port of Malta. Very difficult to fix a precise date to something like this.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: Perhaps some light fold creasing. It doesn’t lie perfectly flat in the photos.

http://tinyurl.com/kxd9ckw Antique/vintage hand made Honiton lace hankderchief
Size: 17″ square
Starting Price: 10.00 GBP
Auction ends: Aug 03, 2014 12:49:53 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A Honiton Point handkerchief – meaning Honiton with a needle-made ground.  Snails/slugs style with extensive fillings of rather narrowly made tally leadworks. The motifs are narrow in width, undulating almost like a tape lace. Maybe it qualifies as a sub-style, or might even indicate place of origin.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Seller cites a fair amount of age browning and discoloration.
Finish: Horizontal and vertical fold lines evident.  Looks unused.

Starting Price: 20.00 GBP
Auction ends: Aug 03, 2014 12:56:42 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A narrow scarf of Duchesse de Bruges, which is a generic term for Duchesse with no needlelace additions (use Duchesse de Bruxelles for Duchesse with needlelace). Raised work is limited to some rolled edges and ribs. Good elegant design with excellent technique. I especially like the little diamond motifs at the ends, and the nice contrast between space and clothwork running up the center of the scarf.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Seller cites occasional broken bride.
Soilage: Occasional brown age mark.
Finish: No obvious creases. or wrinkles.

Starting Price: $39.99
Auction ends: Aug 03, 2014 18:54:49 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller kuchcollectiblesandvintagelinens, Ronkonkoma, New York, United States
Comments: A Point de Gaze butterfly.  These were 20th century items made for the tourist trade. This particular one is a simple design with no extravagant ‘mode’ decorative fillings. There are a few loose threads on some rings that weren’t cut off. Sometimes these have wire to support the 3-d effect, but I don’t think there’s anything like that here.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean
Finish: No creases or folds.

Starting Price: $39.99
Auction ends: Aug 03, 2014 19:02:59 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller kuchcollectiblesandvintagelinens, Ronkonkoma, New York, United States
Comments: A rectangular scarf of Brussels bobbinlace application on machine net. Needlelace fillings (one thing that distinguishes it from Honiton), and no raised work in the bobbinlace, giving it a more Bruges appearance. Esprits in the ground throughout the length, and a delicate edges surrounds the whole piece – this might be a pre-made braid. The design itself is massed at the ends.  A good middle-market product.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Some small brown spots in the tulle, fairly localized.
Finish: Some horizontal fold creases.

Auction ends: Aug 04, 2014 08:29:35 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Irvington, New York, United States
Comments: A Punto in Aria border. I think it’s Italian; although the commenter discusses some interesting point, there are no documented pieces of this kind of lace having been made in England. Plate 132 in Santina Levey’s “A History of Lace” shows a very similar piece, even down to the picots at the sides of the tape-like trails. Actually there are quite a lot of pieces like this in various collections. And some of the same motifs can be seen in the portrait by Garzoni in Levey, figure 134. This is a transitional lace heavily influenced by the designs of Bartolomeo Danieli in the early 17th c.
English lace of this period came out of a more geometric rigid design when it moved into the flat points, transitioned to knotted stitches, not straight buttonhole. The piece in Levey is labeled as Italian, 2nd quarter 17th c.
It does have an interesting feature, what looks like a drawnwork band similar to those seen in Reticella separating the two bands.
Provenance:  “…part of a collection from the Metropolitan museum deaccession.” This might be wrong – it could be the Brooklyn museum.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see the ends to tell if they are cut.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: Has slightly wrinkled look, but for something this old, you would expect that.

Size: 9″ diameter
Starting Price: $9.99
Auction ends: Aug 04, 2014 16:59:45 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller iloveelliot, Northville, Michigan, United States
Comments: This is part of a series of 4 bobbinlace medallions (see also #331274002530, #331274005747, #331274009794 – all separate listings). They represent the symbols of the kings of France – the porcupine is Louis XII, the salamander is Francis I, and I haven’t looked up the others.  Nice example of figural work, guipure, not pieced.  Very similar to a piece that showed up on Ebay, listed in the Feb 28, 2013 Ebay Alerts,  http://tinyurl.com/n93pzws. For that piece the seller says says it came from Offida, Italy.
Provenance:  None cited, other that they came from England.

Finish: No creases or wrinkles.

Offered by: Ebay seller grpantiques, Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey, United States
Comments: I’m guessing that this is not real tortoiseshell. If it is, buyer beware, there are very strict rules for such material. The lace is Chantilly, with an asymmetric design and a little shading in some flowers and leaves. I especially like the way the ribbon is handled at the right side.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Some chips on the sticks. Lace looks intact.
Soilage: Looks clean, but had to tell with black lace.

Aug 05, 2014 06:21:04 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Irvington, New York, United States
Comments: I’m putting these two together since they are similar styles of Venise needlelace. The round piece has a more symmetric, elegant design that certainly look French in style. The technique is more elaborate, and it includes some fillings, and note the picoted brides. The runner has more figural work, typical of Italy, also more decorative clothwork. The brides are also plain.  But are good, complimentary examples. Wish there were some closeups of the runner, difficult to see the stitch structure…
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None on the table cover or the runner.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: They both look clean.

Comments: A border of Cantu bobbinlace with figurals of dancers with a picoted bride ground and a little raised work.  Typical three and five-lobed flower heads, and hooks of Cantu lace. There’s no obvious header or footer, but there is an orientation. Might have been something for a table linen.

Comments: A border of Belgian Point d’Angleterre, meaning bobbin motifs with a Point de Gaze ground. This was a later 19th century development, and can be a spectacular lace. It has a few decorative ‘mode’ fillings in the flower centers. Excellent naturalistic design of roses and leaves. No esprits in the ground, and the design almost entirely fills the ground.
Provenance:  Part of a museum deaccession.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see the ends to tell  if it was cut.  The heading tape is a separate addition.

Comments: A figural group, the seller says it is part of a wedding. Beautiful work, recalling Czech developments in bobbinlace in the mid 20th century. From the style of dress I’m guessing 1960’s. I’m looking through my books to see if I can spot an artist or pattern books with this style. Perhaps Elena Holéczyová, although there’s no way to prove she had anything to do with them.

Comments: The fan leaf is Brussels bobbinlace application on machine net, with some simple needlelace fillings; more elaborate bobbinlace fillings. Small, carefully done motifs. Guard sticks are elaborately carved, not sure what the material is.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: A few pinholes in the tulle.

Comments: An Irish Crochet dress front or collar with matching cuffs.  The little flowers around the outside edges are more typical of silk IC, but that’s probably not the case here.  Tightly woven motifs, pinwheel flowers, shamrocks, harps and leaves with some raised wrok. Comments: Another fan leaf of Brussels bobbin lace applique on machine net.  The design of this one is not as sophisticated as the previous example from this seller.  It is more obviously a fan leaf because of the extra piece on the left end meant for the guard stick.  No needlelace accents that I can see.  Most of the photos have been taken from the back side.

Comments: A Point de Gaze lappet scarf, later 19th c, no raised work. The pattern is a bit flat too. The other set looks like Alençon, but beware, most of it looks appliqued onto a machine tulle. In fact at the ends some of the tulle is not trimmed properly. I’m thinking this is a highly assembled piece, and parts may have been taken from a border. At the same lower end there’s evidence of some brides tortillée from whatever this was taken from, left on the outside of the border.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None on the Pont de Gaze, although I can’t see the center of the Piece. The other one is assembled.
Damage: One large hole in the Pt de G mesh. The other one looks fairly good.

Comments: A rectangular, fairly narrow shawl of tambour embroidery on machine net.  Note the additional cloth attached to simulate raised rose petals. Most of the design action is at the ends of the piece.  From the tambour, I’d say this is a Belgian piece.
Provenance:  From a Philadelphia estate.

Offered by: Ebay seller alaing3182, Midi-Pyrénées, France
Comments: A short border of Alençon, late 18th c ‘Herren Alençon’ style. It might have been made later, hard to tell. This wasn’t a style that really lasted until 1900. Réseau fin along the edge, brides tortillée above  I think this is a lot finer than the photos reveal. The motifs in the ground are rather large for this kind of lace.  This is a lace meant to be ruffled.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see the end treatments.  One modern thread along the edge, perhaps this was sewn to a backing in the past.
Damage: Very slight fraying in the mesh, one break in the header edge. I can see a few breaks in the ring supports at the bottom edge.
Soilage: Hard to tell against the red color, but might be a beige color.

Comments: Some kind of dress ornament, I guess, of Honiton guipure. It looks like it’s meant to attach tom something, but am unsure what. I don’t think it would be a handkerchief.  The design is snails/slggs style, and I especially like the technique of the roses and the center thistle. Busy design, with narrow woven tally leadwork fillings. Interesting and unusual.

Comments: Wish there were some closeups that magnify on the screen for this piece. My gut feeling is that it is white Chantilly, and the attached tags are unusual.  This was normally made in France, not Belgium, but it may have been marketed in Belgium (although the tags do say ‘made in Belgium’. Lovely design of irises, and I think I see some rather star-shaped fillings rather than the more expected honeycomb. I’m also having difficulty spotting the racroc lines, or maybe I just can’t believe that they are running across the piece (see the 6th photograph).

Comments: A Rosaline collar or dress front.  Seller correctly notes that the motif edges are not traditional to Rosaline, and I think the motifs themselves are a bit too tightly woven. There are a few rolled edges, but mainly relief is supplied by a gimp thread. The fillings are used in Rosaline, and the perls are there, although I can’t tell if they are bobbin or needle-made. It has the look more of what is known as ‘Old Flanders’, a finely worked later 19th c pieced lace. An interesting piece, and I do note that some motifs are slightly asymmetric.

Comments: Interesting thought that this might be Irish, however I think Belgium is more likely. Primarily given the decorative clothwork, the fineness of the thread, and the loosely spaced buttonhole stitches on the cordonnet. Lovely pattern, excellent work.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see ends to tell if they are cut.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Comments: As everyone has figured out by now, this isn’t a lappet. As the consultant says, it might be the connecteding band between lappets, and I don’t think it’s too long for that.  It is a pieced bobbinlace with straight droschel ground, and the question is, Flemish or English? It does have some fine fillings, however the general feel of the design to me says England – it really doesn’t have the very fine feel of continental products.  The date cited seems appropriate.
Provenance:  Property of the Hext family, provenance available.  Tag says “Lappets ? worn by a Mrs. Collins at the court of George II”
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see ends to tell if they are cut. Engrelure added.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos, but would like to see more closeups.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.
