Starting Price: 30.00 GBP
Auction ends: Jan 18, 2015, 4:53 AM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller reddolly123, Nottingham, United Kingdom
Comments: Two sections of a Point de Gaze border, no raised work, and minimal decorative ‘mode’ fillings. But the clothwork fillings are varied and interesting, and the design of large leaves along the lower border and smaller trails above is elegant. Nicely done technique.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Two of the four ends are cut, can’t see the rest.  Engrelure added. One join in the center of one length.
Damage: A few pinholes in the mesh. Not enough closeup photos to make a really good assessment.
Soilage: Looks clean, but hard to tell.
Finish: Some light vertical fold creases.

Comments: A Bruges or Ghent pieced lace border. Short repeat alternating between small flowers in a grid with larger flowers, and a scalloped border. The work is quite tightly done, and the whole effect rather solid.  Quite an interesting piece.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: One end looks terminated rather than cut, can’t see the other end.
Damage: A few broken brides.
Soilage: Creamy color.
Finish: Looks a little shrunken, perhaps from past wash.

Ebay seller jaruk, Worcester, United Kingdom
Comments: These are similar so I’ll review them together.  Although the whitework handkerchief can stand very well alone, you often see these edged with Valenciennes lace.  I like to review this type of whitework embroidery, because it was something they tried to teach me when I studied in Alençon, and often includes the same type of decorative ‘mode’ fillings as are used in the needlelace. These are both excellent examples, both edge with square-mesh Valenciennes.  Note the initials worked into the first example in the lace, that’s very unusual.  More typically you find something in the embroidery, such as the armorial motif in the second piece.
Note, I was terribly at the embroidery, it’s a lot harder than it looks.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos on the first piece.  One pinhole in the linen on the second one.
Soilage: First one: seller cites a slight overall patina and some light faint tanning on the embroidery, minor.
Second one: 2 small brown dots on the armorial motif, minor.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles in either.

http://tinyurl.com/p8s4fxm Antique hand made bobbin Maltese lace silk collar flounce edging
Size: 14 cm x 140 cm
Starting Price: 9.00 GBP
Auction ends: Jan 18, 2015, 11:07 AM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller hedgehogpear, BN8, United Kingdom
Comments: A Maltese bertha of cream colored silk. It has an unusual ground of fond chant (6 pointed star), which is occasional seen. Although here it looks a little thinly done. Nice guipure work medallions in the center section, more like 4-leaf clovers than crosses. Typical Maltese crosses around the edge.  A simple band of woven leaves along the neckline.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None, although the ends cut the motifs, but I think this is original. A closeup of the area would help.
Damage: Two missing leaves along the neckline, and a couple separations along the outside border.  Small areas of wear along the outside border.
Soilage: A small pink spot on one medallion.
Finish: A little creased in places, some vertical fold lines.

Size: 22 cm x 140 cm
Starting Price: 9.00 GBP
Auction ends: Jan 18, 2015, 11:13 AM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller hedgehogpear, BN8, United Kingdom
Comments: A border of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net. Elegant romantic design with small, well-done motifs. Circular esprits in the upper ground.  A good example of the type, and a nice width.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Ends cut.
Damage: A few very small holes in the tulle, three small damaged spots in the engrelure.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: Some irregular creases, and light vertical fold lines.  I think the motifs don’t look quite as crisp as they could, but overall good. Might be a sign of a past wash.

161556148061   Sold for 85.00 GBP, 9 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/pnj4dsm Antique hand made bobbin lace collar Honiton English lace
Size: 37 cm neckline, 7 cm max depth.
Starting Price: 9.00 GBP
Auction ends: Jan 18, 2015, 11:35 AM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller hedgehogpear, BN8, United Kingdom
Comments: A small collar of Honiton guipure lace. Breaking out of the snails/slugs style with interesting small motifs, nicely made. There’s a kind of variation on the turkey tail motif along the outside edge. Note the combination whole and half stitch in the roses. Brides look like simple plaits. The design is a bit crowded, and the neck edging doesn’t much match the rest of the design.  Intriguing piece.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None. The endpoints of the collar at the neckline look a little clumsy.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks a little brown in the photos.
Finish: Vertical fold creases.

Comments: Two lengths of the same mid 18th C Louis XV Mechlin lace. The pieces have a very clean and precise design, and excellent technique. Note the typical quatrefoil elements in the fillings.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: I can see part of one cut end, can’t see the other ends.
Damage: Just some trivial wear along the foot edge – condition is exceptional.
Soilage: May be a hint of a little brown staining in spots, minor.

Comments: A table cover of drawnwork in the Tenerife style – note the excellent sol motifs in the corners. Without a provenance it is difficult to tell where pieces like this were made. However, much of it came from Mexico, imported into the US through Houston. An excellent example of a complex technique.
Provenance:  None cited.

Starting Price: $449.99
Auction ends: Jan 18, 2015, 4:18 PM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller numisbrittany, lovely Brittany, France
Comments: A bronzed pewter medallion by Etienne-Victor Exbrayat (1879-1914), dated 1903.  I have another version of this in my own collection, see the second row of photos, which is the same diameter, and quite high relief. You can also see that the inscription is different, and also the treatment of the backs is completely different.  Also note that the ‘fold’ at the bottom is not damage, it is part of the design.  An interesting, rarely seen medallion, which appears to be a tribute to the artist’s mother.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: Patina looks intact, but there are a few spots mainly toward the bottom of the skirt. Hard to tell exactly what these are from the photos.

Comments: A lappet scarf of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net.  Good floral design, well done small motifs.  Simple needle-made knots and rings used as fillings. There might be some embroidered knots used as decoration on top of halfstitch in some of the leaves.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Pinholes and small holes throughout the tulle. Some loose threads along the borders, localized.
Soilage: Looks clean, might be a little beige in color, hard to tell as some photos show more white.

Starting Price: $1,999.99 Buy-it-Now or Make Offer
Auction ends: Jan 19, 2015, 1:38 AM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller seltmeister, simmerath, Germany
Comments: A very long border of Brussels Duchesse. Raised petal Point de Gaze roses used along the lower border.  No PtdG ground inserts.  Note the sculpted raised petal, sign of a better manufacturer. It almost makes the entire flower truly 3-dimensional. Good raised work against half-stitch ground in the bobbinlace.  Dense, romantic design with some innovation in the bobbin-made motifs.
Provenance:  From a collector’s estate.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see the ends to tell how they are treated.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean, and given the contrast between the color of the engrelure and the lace, I think the lace might be slightly beige in color.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.  Looks unused.

Comments: A long crinoline flounce of Brussels bobbin and needlelace applique on machine net. Needlelace is used for flowers along the border, a few leaves and flowers in the main section. No esprits in the upper ground. Needle-made fillings include grids of knots and rings.  I like the tendril design used to represent grapes hanging from the upper swags.
Provenance:  From a collector’s estate.
Condition:
Modifications: One end looks original, in that there’s no applique going to the end. Can’t see the other end.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: Some creases in the tulle.  Looks unused.

Offered by: Ebay seller pearll, Rockville Centre, New York, United States
Comments: Even though this lacks the typical palm-leaf border, I’ll say it is a Ñanduti scarf from Paraguay. The fillings between the sol motifs are very typical of that lace. Several large scarfs like this have come up for sale recently. This one has the fine work typical of what was done in the 1950’s.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Off white color

Comments: A Point de Gaze handkerchief, no raised work.  Romantic elaborate design with a nice lightness, but a little conventional. Small decorative ‘mode’ fillings judiciously used. A nice example of the type.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: A few pinholes in the PtdG mesh.
Soilage: Off white color – the seller illustrates this nicely by photographing it against a light background.
Finish: Center cloth creased and wrinkled, but it doesn’t extend much into the lace.

Size: 24″ diameter, wood base 11.5″ x 9.5″ x 6″
Starting Price: $49.99
Auction ends: Jan 20, 2015, 12:28 PM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller gypsy5961, New Milford, Connecticut, United States
Comments: A Swedish roller pillow with a nice striped cover, probably added by the lacemaker and tacked in place. All the padding makes for a more level working surface. Support stand is probably pine. Note the turned ends to the pillow – these things were usually secured by a piece of wood jammed between the pillow end and the box, but it seems to be missing here. Comes with 22 Swedish bobbins and 3 patterns of torchon-like lace.  Another pattern is mounted on the pillow with a piece in progress, but all the bobbins have been cut off. Probably best to remove this since the pins have a tendency to rust and damage the pillow fabric.
Provenance:  An estate piece.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Looks intact, but hard to say what’s happening under the pattern.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: Base has expected age patina.

Comments: A Brussels Duchesse fan with Mother of Pearl Sticks. I think there are raised petal roses in the Point de Gaze inserts, but hard to tell – no closeups of that area. Good Duchesse with some raised work, and an interesting filing of bobbin-made picoted bride mesh.  Good romantic standard design.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos. The tip of one fan tick looks broken, but not much.
Soilage: Some small brown spots.

Comments: These are similar so I’ll review them together. Both are Chantilly lappet scarves, with bulb ends and narrow connecting bands. The first is a fairly simple design with honeycomb fillings. The second one is more ambitious with bell-shaped ends and the same honeycomb fillings.  Both excellent examples of the type.
Provenance:  None cited.

Comments: Two piece of Mechlin from the same border, mid 18th c Louis XV design. The design has a slightly vertical feel, looking a bit modern. No quatrefoil fillings, instead the fillings are a kind of loosely plaited mesh, almost like a honeycomb, and a snowflake variation.  Just looking at this my first thought was early 19th century, however looking harder, it’s probably an mid 18th c piece. Exceptional condition.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Ends cut.
Damage: Seller sites ‘one stitch break in top edge’.

Starting Price: $550.00
Auction ends: Jan 22, 2015, 10:35 AM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller greatlace, Palm Beach, Florida, United States
Comments: A set of lappets of Brussels bobbinlace with droschel ground.  Excellent condition and design, early 3rd quarter 18th c, where the motifs are starting to get smaller.  One thing confuses me, In the first photo where both are shown side by side, I think they are photographed from the front side. However lappets like these are invariably mirror pairs – here the design sense is the same in both.  It might be that there were more of these made with the proper orientation, but these two survived together somehow.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Looks like the tops have been cut and ends secured – fairly common in lappets.  The lengths look pretty typical.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Seller points out 3 small brown spots.

Comments: A figural needlelace panel, which I think might be Zele.  A big reason lacemakers did the Arms of Belgium and other countries was the War Lace produced in WWI.  This might be an example, but without a provenance it’s hard to tell.  Note the little ‘islands’ where the brides meet, much like you see in Bruges Bloemwerk. Very nicely worked.
