Comments: A large high-end market Point de Gaze rectangle – possibly for a wedding, although the rectangular form is unusual for a veil, and if it were a wedding veil it would probably have been made in a more traditional form, such as the Hapsburg Imperial Bridal Veil (http://tinyurl.com/k55lwah). It’s an interesting comparison, both have a rather Art Nouveau treatment of the flowers. The Ebay piece is flat Point de Gaze with very careful treatment of the clothwork, with many lines and diamond windows. Good decorative ‘mode’ fillings, and I also note a few unusual filling cloth stitches. What is quite unusual appears to be the use of heavy whitework embroidery to give some relief to the motifs. Note also the rather firm spiky picots around the edges.

Modifications: None.
Damage: Some scattered small holes and pinholes in the mesh, occasionally in the decorative clothwork.
Soilage: Seller cites an ivory or light beige color.

Comments: A Point de Gaze bertha with raised petal roses. Good decorative ‘mode’ fillings. The roses on the outside edge are fairly large, note the long rows of raised rings used to accommodate the bigger size. Nicely sculpted raised petals, although multi-layer might have been more effective. Traditional romantic floral design works well for this piece.

Comments: A lappet-ended collar or scarf of Duchesse de Bruges. There are a few needle-made ‘mode’ fillings, mainly single rings, with more extensive grid of rings at the ends. Motifs are well-drawn flower sprays, with rather tiny leaves scattered in the brides, some of which form ‘islands’ where the brides meet.
Provenance: From a Philadelphia Pennsylvania estate.

Comments: A shawl collar of Duchesse de Bruges. No raised work in the Point de Gaze motifs, just a series of decorative ‘mode’ fillings.. There’s an interesting series of needle-made leaves going down the collar points, with needle-made flowers along the outside. These are not Point de Gaze, more of a Zele-type needlelace with thick raised edges. I’ve seen entire pieces made of this kind of needlelace, but not in combination with bobbinlace, which in this case is conventional Duchesse..
Provenance: From a Philadelphia Pennsylvania estate.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Some holes and breaks.
Soilage: Seller cites some age spotting.
Finish: It has a slightly shrunken ‘washed appearance’.

Comments: A border of Point de Gaze, no raised work. Good decorative ‘mode’ fillings, especially in the roses along the lower edge. I like the curved leaf design in the romantic floral pattern. Note the widely spaced looped picots along the lower edge.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Ends cut, engurelure added.
Damage: Nothing obvious in the photos, I’m not sure about the 2nd to the last photo. Might just be a little light staining.
Soilage: Seller cites a little spotting on part of the engrelure, which I’m having trouble seeing in the photos. Looks like there might be some discoloration in the 2nd to last photo, and the last photo shows more of a cream color.
Finish: Just seems a little worn, note especially the irregular cut end in the last photo. Maybe it’s just the granularity of the photos.

Size: 48″ x 104″
Starting Price: 49.99 GBP
Auction ends: May 4, 2015, 12:28 AM PDT.
Offered by: Ebay seller rozshopping, Plymouth, United Kingdom
Comments: A rectangular shawl of black silk Spanish Blonde. It is a complex work using a lot of half-stitch, more than usually seen. Note the ‘honeycomb’ fillings, which in this piece sometimes are a little more round than I’d like to see in a Spanish piece; usually they are more of a 6-pointed star. This may have been made in France for the Spanish market, but it is a lace that is not well documented, so that’s just speculation. The little figural ‘pavilion’ motifs are interesting, and not normally seen in this lace. Note the 3rd photo, which appears to be part of an end, although the orientation is unclear. The vertical section at the left looks a little cut off and not quite symmetrical around the pavilion, and there’s a flower cut in half. Not unusual to see this in end finishes in this type of lace, as if there’s some unplanned piecing going on.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos, but there are few photos.
Soilage: Looks clean, but hard to tell with black lace. I know I always say this, but you have to be particularly careful with this kind of lace which is often subject to rust. Something about iron in the black dye. I don’t see any here, but I do wish there were more photos.
Finish: Might be some fold lines, not enough photos to tell.

Comments: A small bonnet, probably for a baby, with a Hollie point insertion, and some whitework embroidery. At first glance the lace looks a little heavy, but further away you can see more of a line-drawn pattern (first photo). Kind of a flowerpot design. It seems to be making an attempt at a ground pattern between the motifs – unusual. It’s also unusual to see this kind of bonnet without the circular cap back. Usually a straight piece of lace terminates in the circle. These usually date from the 18th c.
Provenance: None cited.

Comments: A triangular dress insert of what is probably Belgian Rococo lace. In Cantú threads are bundled together to go around curve, in rococo branching elements make a new start. Otherwise the trefoil and hook motifs are very similar to Cantú. Good symmetric design.

Comments: A lappet scarf of Point de Gaze. No raised work, minimal decorative fillings. Quite a dense design for a narrow lace with minimal mesh. Seems to be a border of pansy-like flowers around the edges.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Seller says they are ‘joined’, but there’s no photo showing that.

Comments: A bertha of Venise needlelace, probably Belgian. Note the widely spaced buttonhole stitches, a mark of Belgian work. This one has some nice clothwork with a few decorative stitches. And the little picoted wheels are interesting. It’s a heavy piece with a good design.
Provenance: None cited.

Comments: A table cover of cutwork with reticella inserts. Probably pieced together like patchwork, and note the pulled thread hemwork around each insert. Given the provenance it is likely that this is an early piece, but accurate dating is difficult. I think it’s probably a little later because the basic structure does not appear to be a result of cut and drawnwork from the original cloth – it looks more like laid threads. Which puts this more in the Punto in Aria category. An impressive looking piece. This would be an excellent candidate for carbon dating.
Provenance: Estate of Petton Hall in England. Note attached saying “The Date of this Italian Lace is not later than 1595 EJC. (Unknown how that was determined).
Condition:
Modifications: None. Although the outside reticella inserts are left bare on the edge, which is a fragile point. Possible there was an additional edging at some time.
Damage: Many broken and frayed elements, but if the date holds up, that doesn’t matter much.
Soilage: A few dirt spots.
Finish: No obvious creases, it is a little wrinkled.

Comments: A scalloped square-mesh border Valenciennes, later 19th or early 20th c. Tightly woven, harkening back to the great ‘line drawing’ Val laces of the 18th C. Small buds used as esprits, and there’s a fairly unusual openwork pattern along the scallops.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see the ends to tell if they are cut.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Seller cites ‘ivory white’, with a few localized brown stains.

Comments: A triangular Chantilly shawl. Floral design with larger flowers and leaf sprays. A little ombre work in the central flower bundle, but most is just flat halfstitch. It does a lot with straight strapwork outlining slightly oval areas around the outer edge of the shawl. Difficult to get an overall design impression since there’s no photo of the entire thing laid out flat. Hard to tell if this is French or Belgian.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:

Comments: Silk Maltese fans are a little rare – the lace is a bit heavy for a fan. And, I suspect that by the time in the mid 20th century when a lot of lace was brought back from Malta to England by sailors who stopped at the Naval base, that fans were a bit out of fashion. Lots of good guipure work on a 5-pointed star ground – I’ve seen Maltese fan leaves with similar grounds. Note that the woven leaves are placed along the other edge of the leaf, where hopefully they don’t interfere with folding. An interesting piece.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: 5 sticks repaired, apparently by the seller. Seller also made a repair to a small area of the lace, but gives no specifics.

Comments: A pair of ~3rd quarter 18th c lappets of bobbinlace with a 5-pointed star ground. This could be a sign of Brabant work, and the picoted bride fillings are also characteristic of that lace. The motifs are also a little vague, again something often seen in Brabant pieces.

Comments: A pair of late 18th C lappets which are probably joined at the midsection. There are no closeup photos, but I suspect that this is a Lille piece. Early 19th c Lille often had this rather streaky linen point ground, due to the unevenness of the thread. Might be Valenciennes, but we’d need some closeup photos to tell for sure. The motifs also look like they might have a gimp, also a sign of Lille. We can’t tell much from only one photo.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None, although they are probably joined at the midsection. Photos aren’t close enough to tell.

Comments: A collar with lappet endings of Duchesse de Bruxelles – note the Point de Gaze large flowers just below the collar points (no raised work in the needlelace, no decorative fillings). Lots of raised work in the bobbinlace against halfstitch background. The collar was probably added later, but the motifs do match the rest of the piece.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: A few broken brides and frayed spots.
Soilage: Seller says “this has been gently hand-soaked”, no further details. Further says that a few very light small spots remain.
