Comments: A border of ‘mezzo punto’, which is an early Italian tape lace meant to imitate the 16th century Venetian needlelaces. The tapes do look bobbin-made, filled with needlelace stitches.  The raised buttonholed outlines are not well sculpted.  Very interesting is that the narrower raised borders look like bobbin-made plaits.  The lower border and engrelure are plaited bobbinlace.  Seller thinks that many of the picoted needle-made brides may have been added later, I’m not sure of that. The overall design reflects Gros Point. Would love to get this under a microscope.  Is it early?  Hard to say, but the patina looks right.  It’s surprising how much of this survives, not not usually this elaborate.

These might have started life as lappets, but it is also possible the piece was made from a border.  The edges are just a little too straight for comfort, in this type of lace lappets usually have a scalloped edge.  It might have been further cut when the picot edge was added.
