Comments: A square veil of black Honiton applique on machine net. There’s no photo of the whole thing, so hard to tell the exact pattern, but there is at least one mass of flowers in one corner. Snails/slugs style with woven tally leadworks. Black Honiton is fairly rare.

Condition:
Modifications:  None.
Damage: Seller cites some tiny breaks in the tulle.
Soilage: Looks clean, but hard to tell with black lace.
Finish:  No obvious creases or wrinkles.

http://tinyurl.com/qgznmf9 Unusual handmade Point de Venise needle lace parasol cover
Size: 7″ deep, center hole 8-9″ across.
Starting Price: 65.00 GBP
Auction ends: July 5, 2015, 12:38 PM
Offered by: Ebay seller lacemerchant, Whiting, Indiana, United States
Comments: A round motif of Venise style needlelace, perhaps Belgian.  Note the little circles of rings in some motifs, which is a similar technique to Point de Gaze. Also the widely spaced buttonhole stitches in the raised edges. As to exactly what it is, I’m not sure.  I have in my collection something of similar form and size in Irish Crochet, but with a larger opening and narrower width (see photo below). That one has remnants of cloth around the inner edge.  I’m wondering if these weren’t some kind of furnishing pieces, perhaps for a lamp?
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications:  None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish:  No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Comments: A crinoline flounce of Brussels needlelace application on machine net. Excellent work with a good naturalistic design. No elaborate decorative ‘mode’ fillings, although there is some nice arrangement of what there is in a grid pattern. Note the widely spaced long picots on the lower edge, sign of a now forgotten manufacturer.

Starting Price: $125.00
Auction ends: July 6, 2015, 2:04 PM

Comments: A Bruges Bloemwerk fan with mother of pearl (abalone) sticks.  Maybe it’s just the ‘white on white’ effect of the lace on the backing, but I find this piece bold with a nice presence. The lace is typical bloemwerk, fairly simple, and tightly woven.  Simple irregular picoted brides, no fillings.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications:  None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.  A few broken ribs.
Soilage: Lace looks clean, slight age markings on backing.
Finish: Expected fan creases.

Comments: A handkerchief of Brussels Duchesse, simple raised rose petals in the Point de Gaze inserts. The Duchesse is a little on the Bruges side, with simple motifs and gimp borders.  I especially like the fine work on the attachment to the center cloth.

Comments: A delicate Mechlin border, probably late 18th or early 19th c. Looks like it might be fine linen. Beautiful floral design along the border with some woven tally fillings. Small bud sprigs in the upper ground.  This is a lace meant to be ruffled.  Excellent example.

Size: 2″ x 31″
Starting Price: $52.00
Auction ends: July 6, 2015, 3:05 PM
Offered by: Ebay seller lacemerchant, Whiting, Indiana, United States
Comments: A mid 18th c short piece of Mechlin. There are both 6-pointed star and quatrefoil fillings. Note the tiny crosses in the flower petals, each one of these is supposed to be a prayer to the Virgin.  The picoted border is a later addition. This type of lace works well when matched along the top edge, as shown in the seller’s third photo.  I think the upper edge is intact, but it’s a little hard to tell.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications:  Cut both ends, engrelure added. Picoted border is a later additon.
Damage: Occasional pinhole, but overall well intact.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: Vertical fold creases.

Comments: This Irish Crochet piece may have started life as a bertha. It has an interesting variety of motifs, and note the crocheted loop picots. Some raised rings used as accents, at the base or center of flowers. There are a few needlelace-stitches used as fillings in the edge flowers.  Much of this is beautifully sculpted flat work. The overall design does look a little scattered.

Comments: I wrote a post on Salvador Dali’s copy of Vermeer’s Lacemaker http://tinyurl.com/pkhmp2z.  He was reputed to have copied the painting 50 times, but where all those works are is a mystery. Here’s one of them, and if I were more plugged into the Art market I’d probably know where others are.  This etching is number 7 out of 50, is dated 1958, signed, and also certified on the back by the Salvador Dali Archives.
