Offered by: Ebay seller garden*hill, Reading, United Kingdom
Comments: A dress front of Duchesse de Bruges.  Note the gimp edges of virtually all motifs, and the little ‘islands’ in the irregular picoted brides.  Overall good technique and interesting naturalistic design.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: A few frayed fillings and motif edges, minor.
Soilage: Maybe a little beige in color.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Size: 15.5″ x 6.5″
Starting Price: 16.00 GBP
Auction ends: August 9, 2015 11:15 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller garden*hill, Reading, United Kingdom
Comments: A triangular dress insert of Brussels Duchesse, no raised work in the Point de Gaze insert. No raised work in the bobbinlace. Dense design, and the point de Gaze gives a little lightness to the piece. I like the treatment around the neckline.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Seller cites a few small bride breaks and one slightly frayed motif.
Soilage: Beige color with occasional light red stain.
Finish: Vertical fold creases down the center.  Other slight creasing along the edges.

191643877260   Sold for 18.00 GBP, 3 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/ozucb99 A BEAUTIFUL EARLY VICTORIAN HONITON LACE VEIL, SCARF OR WRAP – 102″ (260cm) Long
Size: 15.5″ x 21.5″
Starting Price: 70.00 GBP
Auction ends: August 9, 2015 11:46 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller garden*hill, Reading, United Kingdom
Comments: A long rectangular scarf of Honiton applique on machine net.  Elegant, well made designs, excellent technique.  Extensive leadwork tallies used as fillings. Large sprigs are scattered in the net ground, these are a bit more snails/slugs style than the end motifs. Overall it’s quite an interesting piece.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Occasional pinhole in the tulle.
Soilage: Some isolated red spotting.
Finish: Fold creases, and some other irregular soft creases.

191641862010   Sold for 87.00 GBP, 3 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/oyvwjdp Vtg Antique Point de Gaze Lace Fan
Size: 9.5″ x 18″
Starting Price: $39.00
Auction ends: August 10, 2015 11:54 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller kzfisch, Brielle, New Jersey, United States
Comments: A Point de Gaze fan with amber colored sticks (probably bone slips above) – the amber material might be a celluloid. The roses in the PtdG are large with multiple raised petals of unusual shape. The motifs are a little more innovative than normally found, and a surprisingly good match for the sticks.  I like the overall shape of the lace, although the raised roses do add a bit of bulk to a folding fan.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Some darkening of the glue where slips are attached to the slips.  PtdG mesh looks basically in good shape.
Soilage: Lace is a bit stained from the glue in places.
Finish: Expected fan creases.

201400171856   Sold for $77.89, 5 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/pa6f7b7 Antique/vintage Brussels applique lace square wedding veil/shawl
Size: 80″ square
Starting Price: 220.00 GBP
Auction ends: August 11, 2015 12:12 PM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A square shawl of muslin applique on machine net – note the angular scalloped edges. The motifs are attached with chain stitch, meaning this is probably a Belgian manufacture.  A few simple needlelrun motifs are used as fillings.  Overall design is an elegant leaf and floral arrangement, large sprigs used in the main part of the net as esprits.  An excellent example – this technique can be difficult to control.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: A few pinholes n the tulle.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: Horizontal and vertical fold creases, some minor light wrinkling.

231642546626   Sold for 230.55 GBP, 2 bidders.

Starting Price: $29.95
Auction ends: August 11, 2015 5:50 PM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller purpletigerblue, Colorado Springs, Colorado, United States
Comments: This seller always has wonderful Ñanduti.  I’ve seen the larger doily pattern before, in fact I have one in my own collection. These are both excellent examples of the best of mid 20th C work.  I cited this last week, but take a look at the recently published English translation of Annick Sanjurjo’s “Lace of Paraguay”, http://www.nandutilace.com/englishhome.html.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: One broken thread in the larger piece.
Soilage: Seller cites light age discoloration on the larger piece.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, New York, United States
Comments:  A late 19th or early 20th c Venise-type needlelace flounce with triangular scalloped edge. Good flowing design – might be a Belgian piece given the delicacy of the fillings, and the widely spaced buttonholed borders.  There’s a little sculpting of the raised edges. Overall quite fine work.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see the ends to tell if they are cut.
Damage: A few weaknesses in the upper border.
Soilage: Seller cites “Original cream color”.
Finish: Some slight wrinkling.

http://tinyurl.com/qbzn2yw ANTIQUE LACE- CIRCA 18THC. ORNATE BRABANT LACE COLLAR
Size: ~17″ at top, 73-75″ around bottom, 16″ wide (not entirely sure what all that means).
Starting Price: $150.00
Auction ends: August 12, 2015 6:43 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, New York, United States
Comments:  A short cape or very large collar assembled from a later 17th c Belgian pieced bobbinlace with bride ground.  It is more refined than Brabant, yet not as refined as the best Brussels work. Some of the motifs have been cut along the edges, and the picoted border is an addition.  The motifs have been reassembled in many places,so the bride ground is probably a later addition (although it looks contemporary).  Good decorative clothwork in the motifs along with a variety of fillings. Any symmetry in the design has been lost in the assembly process, but you can recognize similar motifs throughout the piece.
See comment at the end of this post.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Garment made from an early Brussels bobbinlace flounce.
Damage: Some areas of broken and frayed brides.
Soilage: Seller cites “original cream patina”
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Seller says it has recently been laundered and is ‘pristine white’, but gives no details on the laundering process.

Modifications: None
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean, but hard to tell with black lace.

Starting Price: $45.00

Offered by: Ebay seller heartnsoul1, Hollis, New Hampshire, United States
Comments:  It does look like Rosaline with the small motifs and looped edges, but the motif design is leaning is a little more in the ‘Old Flanders’ direction. Kind of a crossover piece.   The single woven tally filling, the ‘islands’ in the brides, and the pseudo-snowflake fillings are also not typical of Rosaline.  I’ve got several pieces like this in my own collection, and they are all a little confusing.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut both ends.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles. Looks unused.

Offered by: Ebay seller heartnsoul1, Hollis, New Hampshire, United States
Comments:  A fairly wide flounce of Venise-type needlelace with raised edges. In places the edges are slightly sculpted.  Lots of diamond windows in the clothwork, and only one type of filling is used.  It’s quite difficult to tell where something like this was made, but I’m guessing French or Italian, primarily from the treatment of the lower edge.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: I see one cut end, can’t see the other.
Damage: Looks like there might be a few broken brides in the main body, seller also cites 3 1″ breaks along the top edge.
Soilage: Some isolated minor red spotting.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Comments:  A fan of Brussels Duchesse with embossed Mother of Pearl sticks. No raised work in the fairly large Point de Gaze insert. Conventional Duchesse motifs, some raised work on halfstitch ground in the strapwork. I like the drawing of the roses.  Sticks are quite elaborate.

As always, I enjoy your eBay alerts and learn so much about lace identification from them. I really appreciate the time you take to do these alerts every week – I know it must be quite consuming.
I do have a question for you this week. Could you please explain a bit more about http://tinyurl.com/qbzn2yw ANTIQUE LACE- CIRCA 18THC. ORNATE BRABANT LACE COLLAR
When I looked at this I wondered why it wasn’t Milanese lace. Could you help me by pointing out some differences in the Milanese style and the Belgian you reference in your comments on this piece? Thanks so much for your help!
