Ebay Alerts! Twenty items – August 16, 2015

I finally got the nerve to add a separate ‘Date’ item to each description. It’s a little scary to do this because I have to commit to something.  So here goes!  Just remember, these are my opinions, and anyone that wants to challenge them is more than welcome.

http://tinyurl.com/pqtgyqm Antique cream silk maltese lace edging just over 12ft/ 3 metres
Size: 4.25″ to just over 12 feet
Starting Price: 29.99 GBP
Auction ends: August 16, 2015 9:22 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller gamboge27, Wadhurst, United Kingdom
Comments: A long border of cream silk Maltese.  Well worked designed of alternating crosses and flowers with a wheat-ear scalloped edging.  I also like the straight edge treatment. Good example, and the length is exceptional.
Date:  Pieces like this were made from the 2nd half of the 19th c well into the 20th c. I’m guessing around 2nd quarter 20th c.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: I can only see one end, but it looks like a natural beginning.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

261998453256  Sold for 41.05 GBP, 3 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/qzfz3bm Antique/vintage large embroidred net shawl – wedding
Size: 37″ x 122″
Starting Price: 50.00 GBP
Auction ends: August 16, 2015 10:39 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A rectangular embroidered net shawl, a little wider than usual. The embroidery is tambour, no needle-run fillings, but it doesn’t need them.  Beautiful design of flower sprays and esprits, totally relying on single lines.
This is a very good week for excellent embroidered and applique net.
Date:  I’ll guess early 20th c.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Seller cites a repair in one corner, but I can’t see it in the photos..
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: Slightly wrinkled, minor. Beautiful drape to the tulle.

http://tinyurl.com/q2so3l9 AN EARLY 19TH C. BRUSSELS OR HONITON APPLIQUE LACE BONNET VEIL ON DROSCHEL NET
Size: 25.5″ x 40″
Starting Price: 40.00 GBP
Auction ends: August 16, 2015 10:48 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller garden*hill, Reading, United Kingdom
Comments: A bonnet veil of bobbinlace applique on droschel net.  I count about 11 veils like this coming up on Ebay since I started keeping records in 2010.  Having done detailed measurements on similar pieces under a microscope, the linen thread in the mesh is some of the finest hand-spun thread ever seen.   In general I think Honiton has more elaborate fillings, and no needlelace accents.  I think this is a Belgian piece, although England is still a possibility.
You can clearly see the vertical strips of droschel against the grey background.  Beautiful work all around.
Date: They date late 19th c to about 1830 (I have one with documentation), but further dating is difficult since this is a common design arrangement.  Later 18th c pieces tend to have a more ‘Directoire’ look, while early 19th c is more naturalistic. can be difficult to tell Brussels work from Honiton. Maybe around 1820 for this piece.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.  Interesting, it doesn’t have a large hole tape at the top or a fold through which you can string a ribbon.
Damage: Scattered small holes and pinholes in the mesh.
Soilage: Localized red spotting – not uncommon in pieces like this.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

191656688164   Sold for 40.00 GBP, 1 bidder.

http://tinyurl.com/prnz5vg Antique delicate Brussels needlelace hat veil – flowers and wheatears – wedding
Size: 45″ x 36″
Starting Price: 85.00 GBP
Auction ends: August 16, 2015 11:01 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A Belgian bonnet veil of needlelace applique on machine net, and it’s a nice compliment to the previous piece. No esprits in the ground. The motifs are well drawn and executed, appropriately accented by a few single raised rings and grids of knots.
Date:  Probably no earlier than 1830 since machine net wasn’t used much before then.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.  Note the fold at the top for the drawstring.
Damage: Occasional pinhole in the tulle, and tiny breaks in some of the fillings.
Soilage: Seller cites “slightly age darkened mid ivory” color. A few tiny red spots.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

231647832542   231647832542a   Sold for 98.99 GBP, 3 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/qbn5d2y 1.48 METRES OF LATE 17TH / EARLY 18TH CENTURY BOBBIN TAPE LACE – Prob N. Italian
Size: 7.5″ x 4 feet 10″
Starting Price: 37.00 GBP
Auction ends: August 16, 2015 11:05 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller garden*hill, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: Milanese style tape lace with the typical irregular six-sided mesh of early lace. The narrow tapes have simple flower terminations, and small mechlin-type fillings. The narrower lines might indicate a slightly later date.
Date:  Early 18th c. This was a lace often duplicated later on, so hard to tell exact date.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut one end, can’t see the other end.  The lower edge looks cut in places, with a separate plaited narrow border.
Damage: A few small holes in the mesh, a few repairs.
Soilage: Small localized rust spots.  Looks a little yellowed in one photo.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

191656676572   No bids.

Starting Price: 12.00 GBP
Auction ends: August 16, 2015 11:41 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller garden*hill, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A very long border of Honiton applique on machine net. Snails/slugs styles, with an effective edge design and small sprigs in the upper ground. Some small fillings of woven leadwork tallies.  I find this an effective design.
Date:  Probably later 19th c.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut and secured on one end, can’t see the other end.
Damage: Some small holes and pinholes in the tulle, some small repairs.  One join 1 meter from an end, which is to be expected with a piece this long.
Soilage: Small localized rust spots.  Looks a little yellowed in one photo.
Finish: A little creased.

191656847841   Sold for 117.00 GBP, 7 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/q7ujx9m BEAUTIFUL VICTORIAN BRUSSELS BOBBIN LACE DOUBLE LAYERED SHAWL WITH RAISED WORK
Size: 90.5″ x 35″
Starting Price: 80.00 GBP
Auction ends: August 16, 2015 11:59 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller garden*hill, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A mantilla of Duchesse de Bruges. These are not conventional Duchesse motifs, they are more elegant and note the tightly woven leaves, nicely shaded with half stitch.  And the interesting woven square tallies used as fillings and veining.  Some raised work on halfstitch background in the strapwork along the edges. The line of small flowers along the headpiece indicates a place to fold the piece, note that the design surface reverses on either side of the line so that the top is always shown when folded.
Elegant, impressive work.
Date:  Late 19th c.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Seller cites one broken bride.
Soilage: Some localized red spots.
Finish: A little creased.

191656791621   Sold for 280.00 GBP, 6 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/pmalprf A 3.00 METRES LENGTH OF LATE 18TH CENTURY BURANO NEEDLE LACE – 3″ (7.5cm) Deep
Size: 7.5 cm x 2.90 m
Starting Price: 20.00 GBP
Auction ends: August 16, 2015 12:04 PM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller garden*hill, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A fairly long border of early Burano needlelace.  Typical simple design, meant to be ruffled.  The large areas of fillings along the edge are unusual. This type of lace is noted for the ‘streaky’ ground, worked vertically across the border, and was done on a pillow. The couched outline gimp is also typical, even this early date.
Seller has a few more pieces of this listed.
Date:  Late 18th c.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Two joins. I think it is ut on one end (not sure), can’t see the other end.
Damage: Seller cites a number of small repairs
Soilage: Some localized brown spots. Overall yellowing.
Finish: A few creases toward the visible end.

191656961119   Sold for 41.00 GBP, 2 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/na2exck A VICTORIAN HAND EMBROIDERED TULLE LIMERICK LACE SQUARE SHAWL, KERCHIEF OR VEIL
Size: ~48″ square
Starting Price: 35.00 GBP
Auction ends: August 16, 2015 12:12 PM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller garden*hill, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A tambour embroidered net square shawl with a little needlerun work used as fillings.  Good massed flower designs, recalling Blonde-de-Caen.  Might be Limerick, although there isn’t any Irish iconography, and little needlerun work. My guess would be Belgian.
Date:  If Limerick, probably after 1880 when the revival of the industry occurred. But the design seems earlier.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Some pinholes and small holes in the tulle, at least one repair.
Soilage: Some localized brown spots. .
Finish: A few minor creases.

191656800133   Sold for 60.00 GBP, 4 bidders.

Starting Price: 5.00 GBP
Auction ends: August 16, 2015 12:27 PM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller garden*hill, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: Silk Blonde de Caen border with the typical heavy scalloped edge and large buds used as esprits.  This type of lace doesn’t survive well, and is quite impressive at its best. This one has seen better days, but is a good example of the type.
Date:  2nd quarter 19th c.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut all ends.
Damage: General wear, some holes in the mesh.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: Overall wrinkling.

Comments: A Duchesse de Bruxelles collar with long points. No raised work in the Point de Gaze inserts.  There is raised work in the bobbinlace against halfstitch ground in the strapwork. Conventional bobbinlace motifs – nice small buds along the neckline.
Date:  Late 19th c.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: I think there might be a repair around the neckline center back. PtdG mesh looks OK.
Soilage: Looks clean.

Comments: An embroidered machine mantilla with attached collar. Heavily embroidered with tambour, and I think there are needlerun filling stitches.  Impressive design at the back, with similarly decorated rectangular ends.  Irish or Belgian – this is an unusual form.
Date:  2nd half 19th c.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.

Offered by: Ebay seller dynamopix09, Reading, Massachusetts, United States
Comments: A handkerchief of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net. The design is conventional florals in a middle-market product. I do like the inner edge treatment and could only imagine the improvement if the cloth followed those outlines.  And the overall design is well filled, nice presence when viewed in its entirety.
Date:  Later 19th c.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Holes in the Tulle.
Soilage: Seller washed with delicate linen laundry detergent by soaking overnight.  My congratulations to the seller for giving these details!

Comments: A set of two cuffs, a collar, and a neckpiece of Point de Gaze, same estate as the previous set. Raised petal roses, and note the diamond windows in the petals. Other than that the pieces are fairly conventional design.  Rare to find such a set.

Comments: A rectangular shawl of Brussels needlelace applique on machine net.  Some fillings of rings and knots in a grid pattern, no elaborate ‘mode’ decorations.
