Comments: A small collar of Carrickmacross applique on machine net. Ring picots along the outside edges, and note the spiky picots in the outer sections of guipure. Good needlerun fillings of two patterns. Well organized design including lots of shamrocks. Nice presence to this piece.

Comments: A collar with lappet points of Brussels Duchesse. Raised petal roses in the Point de Gaze inserts. Note the diamond windows in the raised petals, sign of a better manufacturer. Some raised work in the bobbinlace strapwork against halfstitch ground. Quite an elaborate romantic floral design, well made and presented. Runs the risk of being a little crowded, but I think it comes off quite well.

Comments: A small collection of English bobbinlace prickings. Note the seller has two more lots for sale, #291648323205 and #291648322790. The appear to be English Beds and Torchon. They seem to be prickings done from another template – there are no lines drawn on the patterns. Note the scraps of cloth sewn onto the ends, you often see this in English Beds prickings. I’m not entirely sure how these extension were used, except to think they were the attachment points on the pillow. Rather than pinning directly through the pattern paper.

Comments: A deep collar of floral Beds. The design is a bit unusual, but it is a large piece which is also unusual. Note the raised leaf tallies on halfstitch ground. I found an image of a medallion in the Bucks Cottage Worker’s Agency catalog (c. 1900), which has a lot of similar features, like the little mats done where brides meet. The catalog does say that piece is linen. I can’t tell the thread type from the Ebay listing photos, but I wouldn’t rule it out at this point. You can also see the same flowers in other photos in the catalog, although I’m not sure the raised work matches.

Comments: A white silk Catalonian blonde rectangular shawl or mantilla. The large, plain motifs with the 6-pointed star fillings are typical of Spanish work. Note also the half-stitch used as shading accents, but sparingly. White blonde was used more for formal wear in Spain, most pieces like this are black.

Comments: A pair of lappets, probably around 1800. The unusual fond chant ground is used even as a filling. The motifs are quite fine, and similar things are seen in Lille, Mechlin, and both square and round hole Valenciennes of this period. There is a gimp around the motifs, so this could be a variation of Mechlin. You do occasionally see it used earlier in what looks like Mechlin, and they did experiment with grounds. Although this is a bit late for experimentation.
The fond chant does show up in many laces outside of Point de Paris, often in combination point ground. We can’t assume all of it is some kind of English kat stitch variation. The subject is not well investigated.

Comments: A Gros Point style matching set of triangular dress ornament, matching choker and cuffs. Such sets don’t appear until later in the 19th c, and there are no signs of reassembly in this set. From the edge ornamentation which strongly resembles Point de Neige edges, I’m thinking this is Italian. Excellent clothwork and ornamentation, although the raised edges are a bit too small to really lend themselves to elaborate contouring.
Provenance: Note attached says “Mrs C D Armstrong” (I’m having trouble making out the initials).
Date: Later 19th c.

Comments: Valenciennes de Gand border. This type of lace was first patented in 1852 by Sr.Marie Joseph, Virginie Vranken, the director of the lace school for orphans in Ghent. It does appear to have been made by other manufacturers later in the century. It is a pieced lace with an unusual ground formed of three threads. The motifs were made almost in bulk and combined into various designs. The end effect can be quite impressive.
In this example, the raised work in the bobbinlace is unusual and probably indicates a later date. The snowflake fillings are also quite unusual.

Comments: A deep collar of Venise – I think it might be a Belgian piece. The overlapping rings seen in flower centers recall Point de Gaze work. And the clothwork is not tight, it has the open probably double twist that also gives a more open Point de Gaze effect. I can’t see how loosely the cordonnet is buttonholed, which would also be a clue.
Then again, it could be Irish or French or Italian.

Comments: A border of Brussels bobbinlace applique on droschel ground. Fillings in the flowers are bobbin-made, but I’ve never seen a design this fine in English work. So I’m going with Belgium. The thin trailing design seems more applicable to early 19th c. work.

Comments: A long border of Brussels bobbin and needlelace applique on machine net. The needlelace is worked in an interesting architectural motif along the lower edge. Finely worked bobbinlace is confined largely to florals. Esprits in the upper ground.
