Comments: A round piece of Honiton applique on machine net. Snails/slugs style. I haven’t seen anything quite like this before. Honiton applique is not something normally used for table linens, so I’m wondering if it is some kind of veil. Note the extensive brides in the floral masses, so strictly speaking it’s not really an applique. Very unusual.
Provenance: From a large Scottish country house.
Date: ~1900

Damage: One pinhole in the tulle.

Comments: A floral Beds collar with long front points. The design alternates between a single flower and 7-lobed leaves. Interesting pattern of picoted brides with ‘islands’ where they met. The overall design seems a little haphazard.

Comments: A border of what I like to call “Point de Gaze Guipure”. Meaning Point de Gaze technique but with a bride ground. This doesn’t come up very often (see the collar from the Jan 10, 2016 Alerts last week), and when it does the quality tends to vary. This example is a very flat lace with somewhat irregular motifs.
Provenance: None cited.

Comments: A guipure handkerchief. Might be Beds, but the thread seems a bit heavy, and the woven leaves along the outer edge are a little atypical. The outer plaited edge isn’t as elaborate as might be seen in a lot of Beds. My guess would be a French guipure, maybe Cluny. Seems to have been made in two pieces, the inner and outer parts looked joined together. Looks like there is an overlapping join on the right side of the outer edge.

Comments: A black guipure square shawl. I think this is a Spanish piece, probably black silk like Maltese. And it has the same layered construction that you would expect in Maltese. But the overall design and motifs are atypical, much thinner trails and different arrangements of woven leaves. Spanish guipures are a relatively unrecognized genera, I have a few documented ones in my collection. But there’s very little in the literature.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: ~1900
Condition:
Modifications: Seller talks about a missing edge band, and there might be something gone at the top. Hard to tell from the photos.
Damage: Numerous open seams and might be a few repairs.
Soilage: Looks clean but hard to tell with black lace.

Comments: A border of needlelace applique on droschel ground. Interesting needlelace, very little toilé. It’s almost all buttonholed cordonnet, with some simple knotted and ring filling grids. The technique is tending toward Point de Gaze.
In general design it reminds me of contemporary Alençon with the narrow lower border and fairly open spaces at the top. The trailing design in the main ground is a more romantic early 19th c type, rather than the Herren Alençon derivatives seen in the later 18th c.
Some of the design at the top seems interrupted, not sure if it’s been cut down.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 2nd quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut both ends. Might be cut under the engrelure.
Damage: Some pulls and a few small repairs in the ground.
Soilage: Localized brown dots. Seems a beige color in the photos.

Comments: A border of Milanese with the round plaited mesh. Difficult to tell Italian vs Flemish work, but I don’t think the thread is fine enough to warrant a Flemish attribution. Interesting how the mesh follows the outline of the design, a common feature of earlier Milanese laces. The design appears to be intact. The added piece at the top is a straight lace with torchon ground and a gimp – a later addition, but I can’t place the exact type.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: late 17th or early 18th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut both ends. Additional lace added at top.

Comments: Two examples of assembled laces. The first is composed of squares of Cantú bobbinlace with white cutwork embroidery. In the corners are squares of filet. Venise-style plaited bobbinlace surrounds the outside, and also is used as an insertion around the center drawnwork square. I think it’s an Italian product of the later 19th c. This type of bobbinlace causes endless confusion in museums and for collectors since it so accurately mimics early laces (as a recent workshop at the Metropolitan Museum of Art so aptly pointed out).
The second piece is also assembled, combining Point de Milan (pieced bobbinlace with a needle-made ground), with an outer border and insertions of a Gros Point style needlelace. Probably also an Italian piece, perhaps by the same manufacturer giving the similarity of construction and size. It is difficult to make an exact attribution for needlelaces like this, and Point de Milan appears to have been made both in Italy and Belgium. But I’m leaning toward Italy on both.

Comments: A bonnet veil of bobbinlace applique on machine net. I think it’s English because of the extensive use of woven tally leadworks in the fillings, and no sign of any needlelace. I especially like the fillings used for the bottom row of flowers. Excellent technique in the delicate floral work, however there are no esprits in the main body of the tulle. Which might make it a less effective veil. Note the ribbon at the top survives, and I don’t think this ribbon is something sturdy enough be of use in an apron.

Comments: An unusual and well worked Maltese heraldic panel. You rarely see figural work in Maltese and this is an excellent example. Note the complex ground in the middle part where woven leaf crosses are contained in quatrafoil enclosures. You also see fond chant used as a ground, sign of a better manufacturer. The weaving is tight and the motifs well defined. I wonder if this is a memorial piece, perhaps for someone who died in battle. Just a thought. Fascinating piece.

Comments: A Maltese circular piece with no opening. I think I see a split seam where the outer and inner borders are joined, but it’s inconsistent with a bertha. This form comes up occasionally, usually in a heavy lace like Irish Crochet. It’s hard to imagine it’s a bertha collar since if you sewed it to a dress there would be difficulties in getting dressed. Don’t laugh, but I have an idea that these might be furnishing pieces, perhaps a lampshade cover?

Comments: A higher-end market Point de Gaze bertha with fairly wide lace. Double raised petals in the roses. The seller makes an interesting comment, that scented pads were sometimes placed beneath the petals. I haven’t heard that before, but I have seen cotton padding in some pieces of Point de Gaze under the petals. I always assumed it was for shaping, but this opens another possibility. Seems like a lot of work to go to in an era where everyone was already drenched in perfume. And the the possibility of damaging the fabric is large.

Comments: A pieced bobbinlace with a Dieppe ground. I’m a bit confused by the header. There’s a cloth stitch band below the engrelure which anchors the ground. The top part of each set of motifs in the repeat seems to overlap this and, or perhaps the band itself does something at this point (Or maybe this is the back side of the lace). Hard to tell what’s going on without more closeups. The motifs are florals with leaves, not really a Duchesse style, but I don’t know what else to call this. Unusual, interesting item.

Comments: A triangular Chantilly shawl with romantic drooping floral design. Impressive effect, and I’m having a hard time telling how the strips are oriented (these shawls were always made in narrow strips sewn together with racroc stitch). It’s a little anecdotal, but French products as usually assigned a very thin thread giving an overall grayish look to the piece. Belgian would have a heavier thread. Hard to tell in this case, but I’m leaning toward France.

Comments: I’m wondering if this is a Pescocostanzo piece. The top narrow edge has the slightly abstract motifs typical of that lace, along with the plaited 6-pointed star ground often seen in that region. The lower border is more a tape-lace, symmetric, almost Milanese design, but with the same ground. You usually don’t see this in Pescocostanzo, and the motifs are not very refined. It might be a marriage between two different, but closely related lacemaking regions.

Comments: A modern copy of late 17th early 18th C Flemish bobbinlace. This one has a symmetric ‘candelabra’ design with a needle-made ground. I can’t see what the exact stitch is, but given the Point de Gaze style fillings, it might also be PtdG, but in a slightly heavy thread. An Alençon-type mesh is also a possibility. The bobbinlace is an ‘Old Flanders’ style. One might call this Point d’Angleterre, but the general style is off.

Comments: A small Honiton guipure collar. Snails/slugs style, nicely executed with irregular picoted brides.. I think this is a complete collar even though the right end doesn’t exactly match the left end. Measurements are not given which doesn’t help deciding.

Comments: A cap back of bobbin-made motifs with droschel ground. The leadworks are extensive – mostly in the trails. So England is a possibility. Quite a geometric design, but consistent with late 18th c design.

Comments: A Point de Gaze handkerchief with monograms, also in Point de Gaze. No raised work, and it has excellent decorative ‘mode’ fillings. Note the alternating strips all around the border. This is a high-end market piece with an elegant design and excellent execution.
The monograms are a little confusing, two ‘Ls’ and something else.

Offered by: Ebay seller memorablefinds, Apollo Beach, Florida, United States
Comments: I haven’t seen this one before. Carl Thieme was a Saxony porcelain designer. This piece is supposed to be a replica of an earlier Meissen figure, however the only Meissen lacemaker I know if is a woman making bobbin lace, perhaps Barbara Uttmann (see below – I’m not sure of her raised hand position. It varies in other examples). The figure here is obviously tatting. This is not my area of experise, but it is a lovely figure.

Starting Price: $185.00
Auction ends: January 23, 2016, 12:58 PM PST
Offered by: Ebay seller lacemerchant, Whiting, Indiana, United States
Comments: A pair of late 18th c round hole Valenciennes lappets. Several matching pieces have been added to the ends – these might be the remains of the ruffle that would have surrounded a cap back. The design is quite simple, and is often seen in borders that sometimes go under the name Valenciennes Anglaise.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 4th quarter 18th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Additional pieces added to the tops of the lappets.
Damage: A little minor fraying along the picoted edges.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: Horizontal fold creases.

Starting Price: $145.00
Auction ends: January 23, 2016, 1:18 PM PST
Offered by: Ebay seller lacemerchant, Whiting, Indiana, United States
Comments: A Mechlin lappet of the style associated with the latter part of the reign of Louis XV. The picot edge is a later addition. The fillings are a plaited “round” mesh with exceptionally long side – something often seen in Mechlin of this date. The design is quite naturalistic and a nice contrast to some contemporary Mechlin where the motifs tend to get a little blocky.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 3rd quarter 18th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Picot edge a later addition. Engrelure added at the top, I’m not sure if this edge was cut.
Damage: A few breaks in the fillings. Mesh looks quite good. Unknown problem at the top right edge.
Soilage: Occasional small spot.
Finish: Horizontal fold creases.

Starting Price: $195.00
Auction ends: January 23, 2016, 1:41 PM PST
Offered by: Ebay seller lacemerchant, Whiting, Indiana, United States
Comments: An advanced Honiton border. I especially like the square mesh with the little circular pendants dropping from the upper corner of each – I’ve never seen this before. The work is closely woven with minimal use of leadworks. The flowers seem to come off a little better than the pendant leaves. This is quite a sophisticated piece, and reminds me a bit of Beds, especially with the looped edges of the brides.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: Ends are finished, one might be original.
Damage: Some breaks in the flowers along the lower border.
Soilage: Seller cites an ecru color with slight grey cast. Also says it has been washed clean, but gives no details on the process.
Finish: Horizontal fold creases.

Comments: A shawl collar with long front lappets of Duchesse de Bruxelles. Raised petal roses in the Point de Gaze inserts, minimal decorative ‘mode’ fillings. Some raised work in the bobbinlace against a halfstitch ground. Conventional motifs, all a little large in keeping with the scale of the piece. It does look like this was made all in one piece.
Provenance: None cited.
Date: 4th quarter 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: A few pinholes in the Point de Gaze mesh.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles. A piece this impressive in scale would probably have seen very minimal use.

Comments: A gold metallic border with floral design – that’s unusual. I’ve been talking with the seller after I saw an impressive gold lace with a Buy-it-Now price sell so fast that it never made it to the Ebay Alerts (#401043516268). More will be coming.
I’ve seen examples of this along with the huge bobbins used in making it in the Arenys de Mar lace museum. It is difficult to date since it was made in from the 18th century, and likely earlier. The technique hasn’t changed much over the years. This example is made solely of gold-wrapped silk core threads, no flat strips, and is of more complex design than usually seen. Such metallic laces don’t come up for sale very often.
Date: 19th c.
Condition:
Modifications: One end cut, can’t see the other end.
Damage: Visible end is frayed.
Soilage: Looks clean – these often have tarnish, so this might argue for a little later date.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.
